Cool Americana From The Graeter Collection By Andrew Richmond An auctioneer’s job is more than calling bids and pounding the gavel. There’s also more than a little old-school showmanship required in creating an event, and an event is certainly what M a i n Auction Gallery’s J. Louis “Jay” Karp and his son Jonas created with their Feb. 28 sale of selections from the landmark Americana collection of the late Jon Graeter held in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jay and Jonas, the fourth and fifth generations to manage the family business which the Karp family purchased in 1870 - making it

the oldest auction house west of the Allegheny Mountains - have done much the same thing at Main Auction. Ice cream aficionados will recognize the Graeter name. In the late

Most of the Lehnware left the estimates in the dust, and this yellow ground cup and saucer were no exception, selling for $10,000. Prices reported are hammer prices. 1950s, Jon Graeter and his two brothers took over the ice cream company their grandfather started in Cincinnati in 1870. Under their stewardship, Graeter’s Ice Cream became a Cincinnati institution. Graeter did much of his buying in the 1970s through the 1990s, back when a fellow Ohio collector says, “People Express Airline was in operation and they had a $49 roundtrip flight to New York City, so Continued on page 2

Sharp-eyed bidders recognized that this hanging corner cupboard is related to a decorated box that sold at Garth’s Auctions 2015 Thanksgiving Auction for over $60,000. Both are from Somerset County, Pa. The cupboard was missing most of its cornice, but still sold for $19,500 to dealer Kelly Kinzle. It brought $20,900 in 1986 at the Don and Faye Walters sale through Sothebys. (Above) John Brewster also painted portraits of the parents of this young lady, and those are in the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. That fact undoubtedly help make this portrait the high selling lot of the day at $77,500. Jon Graeter purchased from major auctions regularly, but sadly, not much of that provenance accompanied the collection when it went to Karp’s warehouse. This 1791 Berks County, Pa., blanket chest had an old Sotheby’s label, but the specific sale was not cited. It sold for $55,000 to Andy Anderson in the salesroom.

A copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the 1962 first appearance of Spiderman, sold at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on Feb. 18, for $454,100, a record price at public auction for the comic. The near-mint, 9.4 CGC copy claimed top lot honors in Heritage’s $5.7+ million comics and comic art signature auction. The copy was purchased in 1980 by New York area collector Walter Yakaboski, a comic book collector, who had the opportunity to buy a handful of key early Marvel comic books for the sum of $10,000 - a good bit to spend in those days. Among them was the copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the landmark first appearance of Spider-Man. This particular comic cost $1,200 among the trove purchased accounting to Yakaboski. The copy was not known to the collecting hobby before this auction, because Yakaboski kept it preserved in a safe deposit box for 35 years. The buyer at Heritage was an anonymous collector. “It’s a superbly preserved copy of one of the most sought-after comic books in the world,” said Lon Allen, managing director of the comics department at Heritage. “It’s worth well more than its weight in gold. There are very few like this one.” Another Spider-Man comic from Yakaboski’s collection drew serious attention as a 1963 copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #1 sold for $110,537. A copy of Detective Comics #27 -

marking the first appearance of Batman - shocked the auction room floor when it realized $167,300, despite its 4.5 CBCS grade and extensive restoration. A high-grade, near-mint 9.4 CGC copy of The Avengers #1 sold for $98,587. The iconic book is tied as the secondhighest CGC-graded copy to ever be offered by Heritage. Perhaps foreshadowing the success of his big screen debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” a near-mint 9.8 CGC copy of Fantastic Four #52, famous for the first appearance of the Black Panther, saw intense bidder interest as it sold for $83,650. Another key book, Tales of Suspense #57, introducing fellow film star and
