In 1985, Hess purchased his ancestral Hess Homestead in Warwick Township, just outside of Lititz, and properly restored the property, which has been featured in several articles and television programs. He often opened the home to various historical groups and local garden clubs. Among Hess’s passion was the study of Mennonite genealogy and decorative arts. His 2002 book
