FRIDAY MARCH 10, 2017 • VOL. 48, NO. 10

Hakes’s Americana Begins 50th Year Celebration First In Series Of Exceptional Pop Culture Auctions Set For March 14, 15, And 16 Looking back on the year 1967, some might say that it was, paradoxically, a time of peace, love and war. Lyndon B. Johnson was president, 475,000 U.S. troops were fighting in Vietnam, and the Beatles unveiled their immortal Sgt. Pepper’s LP. Today, collectors clamor for mementos related to those historical people and events, and fortunately they’re able to find them because of another highlight of 1967. It was during that year, half a century ago, that visionary political ephemera collector Ted Hake founded his pop-culture collectibles business. Dubbed “Hake’s Americana,” the company has since become a globally renowned auction house whose sales embrace over 200 popular collecting categories. To celebrate its 2017 golden jubilee year, Hake’s Americana will conduct three major online auctions,

As a nod to Hake’s roots, Auction #220 will feature 500plus lots of important political memorabilia. Two of the top items are a framed 36-star Grant and Colfax campaign parade flag from 1868, estimate $5,000-$10,000, and an exceedingly rare 1896 William McKinley poster publicizing a “Republican Barbecue at Greenfield, Ind.” One of only two examples known to Hake’s, the Continued on page 2

Peeks of Spring will start making appearances, and the “hazy shade of winter,” as Paul Simon coined it, will be heading back into hibernation for another year. What better time to “go green.” In anticipation of the warmer months, the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., is celebrating the color and the season this month in their special display. Although “going green” may bring to mind thoughts of environmental awareness, it has many connotations. However, visions of leprechauns, fourleaf clovers, and Easter baskets filled with eggs, baby chicks, and rabbits all make this a featured hue in both decorations and celebrations. For collectors of green glass or just fans of the fresh and vibrant tone, the Grist Mill has plenty of items to choose from when updating seasonal home décor or expanding collections. Whether the cool minty tint of Jadite, the festive chartreuse of Vaseline Glass, the celadon of Depression Glass, or the verdant emerald often used by many famous pottery manufacturers, the store has just about any shade and style to fit into any design. This month’s display features something for every taste. For the gardener, there is a lovely selection of vintage flora and fauna, flower frogs, gardening implements and objet d’art from Westmoreland, McCoy, Roseville, Hall and Shawnee. For those celebrating seasonal festivities, there is Belleek china, dolls and Royal Doulton figurines depicting Irish lasses, shamrocks and

Celtic-inspired jewelry. There’s always something going on at the Grist Mill Antiques Center. On Wednesday, March 29, beginning at 5 p.m., the store will hold a scavenger hunt, with a prize going to the person who finds the most items on a list. Light refreshments will be served. Sign up for the weekly emails to find out about special sales and events. There is a 20 percent discount on all items $6 and

over and 25 percent off items in a special category every week. Some exclusions apply. On Sunday, April 23, the Grist Mill will be holding their semiannual flea market from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be bargains galore. Dealers from both the Grist Mill Antiques Center and the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will be participating. Come out for a day of treasure hunting, food and fun. A limited number of spaces are still available for vendors. To learn more, call Barbara Lind at 609-726-1588. How Did The 21-Gun Salute Originate? “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute

By Mike Ivankovich Did you ever wonder how the 21-gun salute originated? The 21-gun salute is a tradition often used at military and law enforcement funerals where seven rifles each fire three blanks, for a “21-gun salute.” But gun salutes have been used by many different countries, in many different formats, for centuries. So why “21 guns” for the United States and not “20” or “22”? One theory has it that shortly after the founding of our country in 1776, someone realized that the four numbers in “1776” together … 1 + 7 + 7 + 6 … add up to “21.” The “21-gun salute” was recommended as a tribute to the year the nation was founded, and it’s been a U.S. tradition ever since.
