Mechanical And Still Bank Sale Generates Nearly $1.8 Million In Sales “Jonah And The Whale” Bank By J. & E. Stevens Realizes $119,925
The Church of the Sacred Heart in Trenton, N.J., is the oldest Catholic Church in the area and recently conserved the mural of “Saint Michael and the Devil.” The original parish was built in 1814. The architect, Patrick Charles Keeley, designed and built the present building. “The restrained, if not somber brownstone exterior heightens the surprise of an elaborate interior design. Three pairs of exterior double doors lead into a small, spare vestibule, from which the main entry to the sanctuary narrows to a pair of doors. To the south of the vestibule, in the base of the tower, is a small chapel. The sanctuary is divided into a central, barrel-vaulted nave with groinvaulted side aisles of slightly lower height. Separating the nave and side aisles is a square column arcade of highly polished gray

granite, capped with stylized Corinthian capitals highlighted with gold leaf against a red background. The ribbing that springs from these piers divides the side aisles into seven sections, each of which is marked by a large stained glass window. At the center or each groin-vault, the ceiling is painted with a Celtic cross. The barrel vault of the nave is elaborately painted with frescoes. The decorative painting continues above the piers of the nave arcade, where portraits of the saints appear in roundels. A “Jonah and the Whale” mechanical bank sold for $119,925. Morphy’s premier Mechanical and Still Bank Sale held on Jan. 14 offered collectors the opportunity to drop a dime on some of the finest and rarest antique banks. After all the change was sorted, 42 lots hit between $5,000 and $10,000, and 12 lots hit between $25,000 and $55,000. All prices reported include a 23 percent buyer’s premium. Examples featuring classic tales and beloved characters captured the imaginations of bidders. Lot #341, a “Jonah and the Whale” castiron mechanical bank by J. & E. Stevens, was the big fish of the day, realizing $119,925. Lot #247, a “Little Red Riding Hood” mechanical bank by W.S. Reed, huffed and puffed its $10,000-$20,000 estimate away to realize $33,210. And two tin mechanical selections from Germany added a little foreign intrigue to this sale. They included lot #255, a scarce “Snow White” bank with a key trap that sold for $14,760, and lot #246, a smiling Saalheimer & Strauss “Golliwog” bank that realized $13,200. The 50th Lancaster Hunting and Fishing Show and Sale will take place on Saturday, March 4, at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, located at 1383 Arcadia Road in Lancaster, Pa. Show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. An early buyer’s preview will take place at 8 a.m. Early buyer’s admission will be $10. General admission will be $5, or $4 with an ad. Children under the age of 14 will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. Approximately 100 dealers and collectors will be set up presenting an array of material for sale. Items
will include antique hunting and fishing licenses, shell boxes, old lures, plugs, reels, decoys, fishing rods, books, game posters, knives, guns, traps, photographs, and patches, among other hunting and fishing-related material. Showgoers are encouraged to bring items to sell or trade with exhibiting dealers. Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the Paradise Lions Club.
