Peter Swift Seibert

Many years ago, I read a quote that if a collector said that he had not been taken in by a fake that he was a liar. This is so true, and I think all of us have deep and dark secrets of fake pieces that are buried in chests or closets. This past week, I got stuck on an item. Original photographs of Native Americans from the late 19th and early 20th century are not super rare but they are highly collected. I have several in my own collection but have been lacking a really good image of a woman wearing a blanket and having lots of beadwork.

having also been noted a fake and returned) that they had purchased for $1,500. I hoped that a few of the photos might have been genuine as they were sure out a chunk of change on this deal. They also reported that the images had been reviewed by a local collector in their area and pronounced good. I don’t fault the collector as we all can be fooled. So how do I feel about it? Relieved that the seller refunded my money right away. Sad for them that they got hooked on the deal. Mad at the faker who has caused so much damage, may they choke on their ill-gotten proceeds! BUT, will it stop me from buying photographs? Absolutely not! You can’t learn to fish by watching is what I told my daughter, and you can’t learn to collect unless you are always studying and buying.

There was no difference in surfaces at all nor signs of wear. 3) The card was glued down on a piece of cardboard. I had found this initially suspicious in the listing but having seen cases where cabinet cards were glue mounted on cardboard to fit into 20th century pressure mount frames, this did not alarm me. The seller, who was incredibly kind in all of this, immediately refunded my money to me (and thus earned five star feedback ratings immediately from me). They reported that the card was part of a group of cards (apparently at least one other

The good news, and it is important for me to say this right up front, is that the seller did the right thing. After I contacted them about the image, they refunded me the full purchase price straightout. So, the story ended up okay. But what was the backstory on the photograph? When it arrived, I was thrilled to see it. A nice 1890s cabinet card of an Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) woman wearing a blanket and with a lovely strip of beadwork on her skirt. The more I looked at it, however, the more that I realized it was a modern photocopy glued down on a piece of card stock that was in turn glued to a piece of cardboard. What were the giveaways? 1) The foxing that is so common on old photos and

Instead, local antique dealer Mark Lawson suggested she bring it to Swan, said Swann Americana specialist Rick Stattler. “The story was covered by Channel 10 News in Albany, which sent a film crew to our saleroom. After spirited bidding, it was hammered down to bookseller Stephan Loewentheil for $100,000, the buyer’s premium bringing

Fooled By Fakes

Notable Naughties Of 2014 Every year, more scammers and fraudsters are added to the Fakery Hall of Shame when their nefarious deeds are discovered by law enforcement officials. Some take years of patient investigation to uncover while others ply their trade a bit more haphazardly and are caught quickly. I’ve pulled a few notables of 2014 from international headlines to wrap up this year’s column with some very clever fraudsters as well as some not so clever criminals. Coin Cunning In January, The Times of India reported that a “gang

of six, which included two women who participated in negotiations with unsuspecting targets to make the scam more convincing, represented themselves as part of an archaeological excavation team. They claimed to have unearthed a huge amount of gold coins, some of which they secreted away for private sale rather than turning them over to the contractor. The group sold an undisclosed number of gold coins to a doctor, who wisely brought them to a jeweler for authentication. Upon being told that they were fake, the police were notified and the gang was apprehended, having given their cell phone number to the doctor in case he wanted to purchase more coins. When police caught up with the bunch, they discovered 4,800 more fake coins and several kilograms of yellow metal. Sportscard Scoundrels Closer to home, two brothers in Ohio were snagged by the U.S. Secret Service on counts of mail fraud and wire fraud for

auctioning off vintage baseball cards that would have been rare and valuable - if they had been authentic. Using an online auction site, the brothers posted photos of authentic vintage baseball cards, such as a 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card, then sent a counterfeit or reproduction card to the winning bidder. On other occasions, they would also contact the underbidder, claiming the high bidder had reneged, then offer the card to the unsuspecting buyer, who would either receive another counterfeit or nothing at all. The pair had collected over $60,000 in the scheme over several years’ time.

Trick Town? Ever been to Agloe, N.Y? No? Neither has anybody else, and that’s a guarantee. The “paper town of Agloe appears on a 1925 map made by Otto G. Lindberg and Ernest Alpers; the town, marked as being in Sullivan County, never existed. No, these experienced mapmakers didn’t make a mistake, they deliberately made up a fake town. It’s what’s known as a “copyright trap - fictitious places that some cartography companies would add to a map as a means of

protecting their intellectual property. If another map was published under another name and showed the paper town they’d made up, the company or mapmaker knew there was copyright infringement afoot. Unfortunately, they even outsmarted modern technology; the fake town of Agloe showed up on Google maps and was just removed in 2014, almost a century after it had been created as an anagram of the mapmakers initials: OGL and EA. Fabulous Forgeries Art fraud strikes again: this time the target was the artwork of Jackson Pollock. This summer, the FBI arrested an East Hampton, N.Y., man for selling over 60 fake works purported to be by the famed Jackson Pollock. The con artist took in over $1.9 million in the scheme. He had concocted a full back story to cover his cache, which included having discovered the artwork during a clear-out of a woman’s basement in East Hampton. He sold the paintings in online auctions where he drove the prices even higher with shill bids. Apparently this was something of a trend with the accused. He was arrested in

1995 for counterfeiting $20 bills in a money laundering ring.

Musical Mayhem Okay, “mayhem may be overstating things a bit, but U.S. Customs did seize almost 200 counterfeit acoustic and electric guitars at an international mail facility in Jersey City, N.J. Apparently the packages were as shoddy as the cheap guitars they contained, which

is what alerted customs officials. Inside the packages were low-end guitars made in China that sell for only a few hundred dollars; business cards with the information of the Chinese website were found inside the packages. Selling lowend guitars, however, isn’t illegal, but the instruments took a problematic turn when a musical band from Texas counterfeited labels from such guitar giants as Fender, Gibson, and Martin, affixed them to the cheap guitars, and sold them for thousands of dollars. The group was planning to use the approximately $56,000 they made in the fraudulent scheme to fund a band tour. China Leads the Pack According to Homeland Security’s 2013 Intellectual Property Rights Seizure

Statistics, “China remains the primary source economy for counterfeit and pirated goods seized by DHS, with a total value of $1.1 billion. The top ten most counterfeited/ pirated product categories were tracked, with all unspecified items falling into the “other commodities grouping. The top five categories for 2013 were: handbags/wallets; watches/jewelry (up over $315 million from 2012); consumer electronics/parts; apparel/accessories; and pharmaceuticals/personal care. All told, a total of over $1.7 billion worth of counterfeit or pirated goods were produced overseas. Quite an alarming number!

Vintage Movie Poster Auction two known to appear at auction. The colorful poster for “Laugh, Clown, Laugh (MGM, 1928) depicting Chaney as Tito Beppi, a circus clown who cannot help but weep, sold for $23,900. Large format posters were in demand, as a French fourpanel for RKO’s 1933 hit “King Kong, as big as the beast himself, sold for $65,725, and a six-sheet for “Vertigo (Paramount, 1958) ended at $31,070. A one-sheet style B for “Gold Diggers of 1933 (Warner Brothers, 1933) sold for $31,070 and a one-sheet for “The Ghost of Frankenstein (Universal, 1942) sold for $26,290 in its debut at Heritage. Additional highlights include, but are not limited to, a lobby card for the Peter Lorre mad doctor vehicle “Mad Love (MGM, 1935), which sold for $23,900. A Mickey Mouse stock poster (Columbia, 1930s) estimated at $8,000, sold for $16,730, and a one-sheet for Lon Chaney’s “West of Zanzibar (MGM, 1928) ended at $16,132. The film was released with two different one-sheet posters - the one in this auction, a stone lithograph, was done in a sepia tone photographic process, which MGM did frequently during that period in time. The poster was carefully preserved, and Smith doubts the poster was ever displayed, as it is in such fabulous condition. Additional Chaney posters offered during the Heritage sale included a onesheet for “The Unknown (MGM, 1927) for $28,837. The 1927 example is one of

Dated 1971 and signed lower right, the work displays a warm color palette of red, orange and golden yellow and can be interpreted as a landscape. The category of fine art also includes an original oil-on-canvas by French artist Jean Le Moal. The expansive piece, which exhibits an abstract, organic design comprised of vibrant jewel tones, is expected to bring between $10,000 to $15,000. A screen print by Banksy, entitled “Queen Chimp,” is sure to garner attention from a wide audience. The work depicts England’s Queen Elizabeth II as a chimpanzee and exemplifies Banksy’s method of anonymous, yet highly accessible, political commentary. Don Presley’s New Year’s Day Auction To Showcase Premium-Quality Antiques And Art In 1989, Father Alfred Baca, a priest at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Tustin, Calif., vowed that on the 25th anniversary of his priesthood, he would divest himself of his tangible assets to benefit his parish financially. On New Year’s Day, with the help of auctioneer Don Presley and art and antiques buyers everywhere, “Father Al’s” pledge will be fulfilled. Presley will feature 350 lots of Father Al’s artworks, as well as Teplitz, Pickard and Amphora ceramics, as the special highlight of a

New Year’s Day auction of fine art and antiques from upscale Southern California estates and residences. “Father Al has been an admirer of art and antiques since childhood. His mother was, and still is, a collector of decorative ceramics, in particular Pickard, and provided expert guidance to her son when he decided to start his own collection,” said auctioneer Presley. “She also gave him many exquisite pieces as gifts. Most of the collection is in mint condition and of museum quality,” said Presley. In addition to the porcelain china, Father Al’s collection includes fine artworks. Most notable amongst the American paintings is a picturesque waterscape by New Hope school artist Fern Isobel Coppedge (18831951). The framed 16.5-by21.5-inch oil-on-canvas laid to board depicts multiple two-story residences and a boat shed amid towering trees, overlooking a large body of water with sailboats. It is a quintessential expression of the factors that Coppedge considered so This Francis Picabia (French, important: light, color and 1879-1953) watercolor portrait time of day. is an 18th-century Cuzco school oil-on-canvas titled “Nuestra Senora del Rosario de Pomata” (Our Lady of the Rosary of Pomata). This accomplished work measures 41-by-31.25-inches and is estimated at $20,000$25,000. According to Presley, the sale of Father Al’s collection should provide “a significant financial blessing” for St. Cecilia Church because the objects and artworks are a reflection of “many years of astute collecting.” “Father Al doesn’t need to buy insurance for the afterlife,” Presley said with a chuckle. “I think he already has that well covered. He’s a beloved priest who continues to be a devoted servant to God and his parish. Over and above everything else, he’s making good on a personal vow. He is very humble, and

we had to talk him into letting us publicly reveal what he is doing,” said Presley. The remainder of the 700lot Jan. 1 auction consists of superior-quality estate items and private consignments. Among the categories represented are Russian enamelwork, Baccarat, pietra dura, sterling silver, Tiffany, bronzes, jewelry, and fine clocks and watches. A late entry was a sizable and choice collection of art glass. Estate paintings include a Paul Emanuel Peraire (French, 1829-93) oil-on-canvas landscape titled “Paysage,” estimated at $2,000-$3,000, and a watercolor portrait of a woman by Dada pioneer and modernist Francis Picabia (French, 1879-1953), estimated at $35,000-$40,000. The furniture section is led by a pair of matching

19th-century Napoleon III ormolu mounted black-andcream lacquered cabinets on winged dragon feet. In 2000, the elegant duo was appraised by Sotheby’s for $100,000$120,000. Its estimate in the New Year’s Day Auction is $100,000-$150,000. Of an entirely different but equally sophisticated taste is the pair of heavily carved 19th-century

chinoiserie cabinets. The double doors on each cabinet are hand-painted and open to reveal 12 hand-decorated drawers and other receptacles. The pair is expected to make $50,000-$75,000. The annual New Year’s Day Auction is always a popular affair. Many consider it Presley’s most exciting event of the year. “In addition to the most exceptional estate antiques and art available anywhere, this sale includes many items that will be offered with no minimum and no reserve. If there is a reserve, it will be the opening bid. We try to be as transparent and up front as possible so our customers can bid in confidence,” said Presley. The auction will begin at noon Pacific Time or 3 p.m. Eastern Time. The auction gallery is located at 2202 S. Main St. in Santa Ana, Calif.
