The Ellie Hoover Walker Collection By Karl Pass

n Aug. 9, Skinner’s sold the Eleanor “Ellie” Hoover Walker (19242015) collection. The sale took place at Skinner Auctioneers’ Marlborough, Mass., facility. The company held a two-day August Americana sale on Aug. 8, and 9, which totaled $2,169,006 (including 23 percent buyer’s premium). At the beginning of day two, the Ellie Hoover Walker collection was sold in 324 lots (separate catalog) and totaled $1,042,265. Ellie Walker of Hudson, Ohio, was a longtime dealer and collector. She loved Pennsylvania German material, New England furniture, and spatterware china, among other things. She dealt in quality country Americana and did business with many wellknown dealers of the past. Among them included George

This very good paint-decorated Berks County, Pa., lift-top chest was illustrated in Monroe Fabian’s “The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest.” It was purchased in the 1950s from Ginsburg & Levy. The chest sold for $159,000 to Pat Bell of Olde Hope Antiques in the salesroom. “The chest was the one item in the sale which some considered to have been given an aggressive estimate (est. $150,000-$250,000), but I think it brought a fair price and was worth it for both sides (the buyer and seller),” said one observer. The hammer price was $130,000.

This Samuel Plank paint-decorated wooden hanging box was a highlight of the sale and sold to dealer Philip Bradley in the salesroom for $58,425. Samuel Plank (1821-1900) of Allensville, Mifflin County, Pa., was an Amish schoolteacher who also spent time in Illinois.

The distinctive work of this individual is usually attributed to Jonas Weber (1810-76) and assigned to Leacock Township. Fivepointville is in Brecknock Township. Few slide-lid boxes by Weber are known. Probably six survive today. The sliding lid on this example underwent restoration. There was a half-inch wide patch to the bottom, and four or five nails were added to one end of the box. On Aug. 4, 2012, through Northeast Auctions, a larger sized slide-lid Weber box sold for $73,160 at the Ciccotelli collection sale.

A blue and green spatter cup and saucer in star drape pattern sold for $10,455, and a black and teal festoon pattern plate with sprig decoration in the center sold for $6,765. The tin and chalk did okay, as did some of the formal furniture. Painted furniture and fraktur were strong overall. An octagonal form blue ground paint-decorated tin tea caddy with a bird sold for $1,230. A red ground paint-decorated dome-top document box with minor wear realized $1,599. The example sold here possessed a broken arch backsplash, a slant-lid top with divided interior and two lower drawers, on a salmon/ochre colored ground. Birds and floral design work embellished the front, top and sides. “There are three forms of his boxes, and this represented the third,” said Bob Conrad. Conrad was involved in the book project “Pennsylvania Folk Art of Samuel L. Plank” published in 1994 through the Kishacoquillas Valley Historical Society. Austin and Jill Fine collection through Sotheby’s on Jan. 30, 1987, for $4,950. It had the inscribed names of both “Joseph J. Byler” and “Mary W. Hosteller.” Another similar example sold at the George Scott sale through Christie’s on June 11, 1994, for $23,000. The Ellie Walker example sold for a new auction record of $58,425 to dealer Philip Bradley in the salesroom. It was inscribed in pencil on the back,

“Manufactured by S.L. Plank 3 miles South East of Allensville Pa. Price 1.25 Presented to Jacob & Lydia by Father and Mother Samuel and Catherine.” Samuel Plank’s wife was named Catherine. The two had many children, including a son named Jacob and a daughter named Lydia. The latter was born in 1853 in Port Royal, Pa. The former was born in 1864 in Allensville, Pa. The Planks also spent time in Illinois in the late 1850s and early 1860s. Amish folk art from the Kishacoquillas Valley, typically referred to as “Big Valley” in Central Pennsylvania, is highly prized among regional collectors. Paint-decorated woodenware by the well-known Sam Plank, watercolors by Plank and others, and quality early quilts are all highly sought after in today’s market, as reflected in the price achieved for the Plank box in this sale. A compass-artist dometop box on a blue ground sold for $17,220. Inside the lid, it read “Valentine Hartman/ Bought March the 22 1850.” There was a Valentine Hartman (1808-82) in Berks County, Pa. Maine, circa 1830, was a headline maker when it sold for $116,850. It was estimated at $12,000 to $15,000. “It was found in Augusta, Maine, in the 1950s by Bill Samaha’s mother, Mildred and cost $17,” said Barber. “It is probably the most pristine example of New England paintdecorated furniture we have ever sold. The condition was impeccible. It really energized the crowd and was something the market was excited to see,” said Barber. “It is a rare thing,” said the buyer dealer David Wheatcroft, who was bidding by phone on behalf of a client. “The condition was just unbelievable. It is the best,” noted Wheatcroft. The captions tell more of the story. For additional information, call 508970-3000 or visit w w w . s k i n nerinc.com.

This carved and painted bird on stand attributed to the unknown “Virginville Carver” sold for $20,910. The yellow painted body with blue/black wings with cream and yellow accents and gold beaded dots exhibited minor wear.

to acquire. 9) Mexican folk art. Coming from the Southwest to the East, I have to say this subject area is one ripe for collecting. In the East, Mexican folk art is looked down upon, whereas in the West it commands huge prices—great aesthetic and some wonderful books by Schiffer on the subject, so a definite area to consider. 10) Blues, Jazz and Folk Albums. Okay, a real hidden passion of mine is to acquire really wonderful albums with great covers that look great framed. I have several early jazz ones in my office, and they are great. Album frames are easily found, and they make great decorator items for sure.

I am always asked what people should start collecting if they are new to antiques. Something that is affordable, easy to find and will offer endless amounts of fun is what I recommend. These are important criteria since there are fun things to collect that are so rare that you will never see them. Similarly, there are common things to find that are priced crazily and will never hold their value. So here is my top ten list in no real order. 1) Tinware. I am a huge fan of antique tin, and now that I am supervising a traditional tin shop, that enthusiasm is growing. Tin is really an undervalued area to collect with an infinite number of choices out there to find.

that requires lots of knowledge to collect, but an investment of time can pay off in the discovery of great treasures. 5) Wrought-iron. While there are great and rare pieces of wrought-iron that bring lots of money, there is a lot of wrought-iron that is very affordable. More to the point, research and time spent on wrought-iron makers can help you put together a masterpiece collection. 6) Salopian. Still a highly undervalued ceramic and definitely worth collecting! 7) Carriages. Okay, not portable and not easy to keep, but they are an amazing part of our heritage, incredibly affordable because folks don’t know what to do with them, and are cooler than cool. 8) Real Photo Postcards. These are truly among the biggest bargains to collect. Made in limited numbers and with an infinite variety of subjects, they are great items

2) Ladderback Chairs. I continue to be impressed by the incredible range of ladderback chairs, one of the most traditional of American furniture forms. Some are crude and charming, others are crude and ugly, and still others are beautifully made and fine. This past weekend, I purchased a great early 19th-century ladderback rocker for $65 that is now one of the highlights of my chair collection. 3) Early English Oak. It was hot in the 1920s, and today you can buy examples of 17th-century furniture for pretty much the same pricing that you would have paid then. It is historic, infinite in form and incredibly affordable. 4) American Indian beadwork. While a lot of Native American art is highly priced, beadwork is still very affordable, has an infinite variety of forms and tribes to collect, and is great to show and share. This is a subject area

and architectural design. The focus has strongly emphasized contemporary artists’ work, and contemporary expressions will continue to inspire the collections, installations and public events presented there. “The Renwick Gallery is the first purpose-built art museum in America and an architectural masterpiece; we are delighted to renew this great historic building for the next half-century,” said Betsy Broun, The Margaret and Terry Stent Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “James Renwick Jr., the original architect, took inspiration from the new pavilions of the Louvre in Paris. When the building first opened a decade after the Civil War to display William Wilson Corcoran’s art collection, it was hailed as the ‘American Louvre,’ symbolizing the young nation’s aspirations for a distinctive culture.” Renovation The renovation of this National Historic Landmark has revealed two long-concealed ceiling vaults on the second floor, restored the original 19th-century window configuration throughout, and repaired original

moldings and other decorative features. In addition to upgraded art-storage areas, exterior brick repointing and stucco repair, infrastructure was replaced or upgraded, including all heating, air-conditioning, electrical, plumbing and fire-suppression systems, as well as elevator, security, phone and datacommunication systems. The elegant “Octagon Room,” which was personally designed by Corcoran to feature his favorite sculpture, Hiram Powers’ “Greek Slave,” will present during

the inaugural year a summary history of the building, including photographs and information about Corcoran, Renwick, the use of the building during the Civil War, the demolition threat in the 1960s and the building’s rescue by First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and the building’s transfer to the Smithsonian to return it to its original purpose as an art museum. A full-size 3-D print of the “Greek Slave,” recently made from a scan of the original plaster in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection, will recall the sculpture’s original placement. A dramatic new carpet for the Grand Stair, designed by French architect Odile Decq in her signature red color, reestablishes the French influence in the building. The carpet will appear to flow down the imposing ten-foot-wide staircase and pool in the lobby near the entrance. LED up-lighting of the ceiling coves and touches of gilding on decorative moldings further enhance public circulation areas.

The Renwick Gallery, home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s craft and decorative arts program, will reopen to the public on Friday, Nov. 13, following a comprehensive twoyear renovation. The museum, located across from the White House at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., in downtown Washington, D.C., will reopen with carefully restored historic features and entirely new infrastructure. LED lighting throughout the public spaces and other upgrades will dramatically improve energy efficiency. The opening exhibition, titled “Wonder,” will feature original gallery-sized installations by nine major contemporary artists, renewing the commitment inscribed in stone above the front door, “Dedicated to Art.” The reopening will be accompanied by a celebratory weekend of public programs and three special publications. Winterthur Announces New Exhibition “Tiffany Glass: Painting With Color And Light” The Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library recently announced it will host “Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light,” a dazzling exhibition of some of the most iconic and celebrated works by artist Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). It opens

on Saturday, Sept. 5. The collection was organized by The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in New York City. “Tiffany Glass” will feature celebrated windows such as “Grape Vine” and “Lemon Tree with Trellis” and “Well

by the Fence,” illustrating Tiffany’s mastery of painting with glass. Iconic lamp designs such as the “Dragonfly” and florals such as “Peony,” “Laburnum,” and “Clematis” will also be included. In all, the exhibition will showcase 99 objects, including five large windows, 19 lamps of various shapes and sizes, and 75 pieces of opalescent flat glass from the Tiffany Studios workshop. “The pieces were chosen for their masterful rendering of nature in flowers or landscape scenes and for the subtle use of light and shading in decorative geometric patterns,” said Lindsy Perrott, curator of the Neustadt This window “Well by Fence” design is attributed to Agnes Collection. “They exemplify Northrop (1857-1953) of the Tiffany Studios, New York, circa the rich and varied glass 1910. Historic Colt Revolver Owned By Bat Masterson Sells For $96,000 Bat Masterson’s 1882 Colt revolver and a photograph signed by Abraham Lincoln were among hundreds of rare collectibles that hit the auction block during two diverse auctions at J. Levine Auction &

J. Levine’s auction on Aug. 2 attracted bidders interested in historic firearms, vintage hunting items and other collectibles from the estate of Ted Hansen. Among the highlights were an 1861 Remington Old Army Revolver (44 caliber), a large glass-eyed duck decoy collection, a knife collection, a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle, a classic 1970

Triumph car, and more. The star of the auction, not part of Hansen’s estate, was Bat Masterson’s 1882 Colt single action Army Revolver. “We had tremendous interest in both auctions, and we’re very pleased with the results,” said Josh Levine, owner of J. Levine Auction & Appraisal. “We experienced record online activity. The George Rodrigue “Our Moon is Out” oil painting alone had 15,000 views, and the auction house also had good crowds both days. To sell Bat Masterson’s Colt, Abe Lincoln’s signed photo and other historic items within two days of each other was exhilarating for our entire team,” said Levine. Dr. Ergon Neustadt, the founder of The Neustadt Collection, began acquiring Tiffany lamps in 1935. He went on to amass an almost encyclopedic collection, but perhaps his most significant acquisition came in 1967 when he purchased the flat and pressed glass leftover from the closing of the Tiffany Studios in the late 1930s. This collection contains some 275,000 pieces of glass and is the only holding of its kind. With both materials and objects, The Neustadt

It will feature approximately 100 objects and graphics illustrating the relationship between the Tiffany companies and the rise of modern luxury retailing in America. Henry Francis du Pont’s own purchases from both companies as well as a painting by Louis Comfort Tiffany from a private collection will also be highlights of this small exhibit. The Renwick Gallery (Continued from page 9)

Inaugural Exhibition The debut exhibition, “Wonder,” will encompass all the public galleries, with new room-size installations by nine artists, including Jennifer Angus, Chakaia Booker, Gabriel Dawe, Tara Donovan, Patrick Dougherty, Janet Echelman, John Grade, Maya Lin and Leo Villareal. Each artist works intensively with expressive materials— insects, tires, thread, paper, osiers, netting, woven wood, glass marbles, and LED light strips—to create installations that dazzle the eye and resonate with today’s environmental and social issues. Nicholas Bell, the Fleur and Charles Bresler curator of craft and decorative arts,

selected the artists. Just before closing for renovation, the Renwick organized the exhibition “40 under 40,” highlighting new directions by young artists. Many of the exhibition artworks were acquired for the permanent collection and will be included in a new collections installation in the summer of 2016 by Nora Atkinson, the Lloyd Herman curator of craft. The installation is supported by the Henry Luce Foundation and the Windgate Charitable Foundation. History of the Renwick Gallery Building The Renwick Gallery is one of the most elegant examples of Second Empire architecture in the U.S., characterized by prominent center and corner pavilions, double

Jackie Kennedy intervened to lead a successful campaign to save the Renwick Gallery as part of her plan to restore Lafayette Square. Dillon Ripley, then secretary of the Smithsonian, persuaded President Lyndon Johnson to offer the building to the Smithsonian in 1965, reasoning that the Smithsonian would be a good steward of the historic structure and would return it to its original purpose “for use as a gallery of art, crafts and design.” The Renwick was then renovated. In 1969, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1971, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in the Lafayette Square Historic District.
