Hess Auction Group To Sell Collection Of Byron H. LeCates Of York, Pa. Single-Owner Sale To Be Held Jan. 6 Byron LeCates grew up in the Grantley area of York County and graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1951, Bucknell University in 1955 and Dickinson Law School in 1960 after serving in the U.S. Army for two years. He was an attorney in York for 57 years until his retirement in 2017. Married to Margaret Wallace LeCates, they have three children, 12 grandchildren and three

great-grandchildren. At a young age, his interest in clocks led him to his lifelong interest in collecting antiques. His collection is varied but includes, many clocks, and a large quantity of textiles such as quilts, coverlets, show towels and needlework samplers. He collected woodenwares, china, stoneware, furniture (many pieces painted) and more. Along the way, LeCates has

been involved in many historical organizations and in 2006 received the Volunteer of the Year award from the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC), where he has been a member for 55 years. He has always been active in the Heritage Trust Organization (formerly known as The Historical Society) in York serving on the board and twice as president. Presently

This is a York, Pa., 1835 two-part jacquard coverlet signed “Martin B. Breneman York Cty. 1835 Fancy Elizabet Harbold” four-colors with eagle border and floral field. The estimate will be $200-$400.

The Stark and Lange, Hanover, Pa., 1811 birth certificate is printed and hand-colored inscribed for Jacob Stover, Paradise Township, York County, Pa., born March 21, 1816. With watercolor hearts, tulips and flowers, signed “A.W.” it is in a period-style grain-painted frame, and will be estimated at $300-$500.

The rare York County, Pa., Chippendale walnut secretary desk has covemolded cornice, two upper raised panel doors, compartmented interior above a slant-lid desk with drawers and compartments, four full-width, graduated, lip molded, dovetailed drawers and molded bracket base. The estimate will be $1,500-$2,500.

It’s A Woodland Winter Wonderland Theme For Haddon Heights Special Sales Display The tall case clock is by Jacob Hostetter, Hanover, York County, Pa. The clockmaker (b. 1754, d. 1831) is considered a pioneer clockmaker of York County producing his first clock in 1798 after learning the trade from Richard Chester, the first clockmaker in Hanover. Jacob Hostetter was also a politician, a member of the state legislature and a member of congress (181821). In 1825, he moved to Ohio and set up a clockmaking business with his son in the colony around New Lisbon. See, “Pennsylvania Clocks and Clockmakers” by George H. Eckhardt for more.
