Sonnet for a Barren Mother

An ember blows through infertile wind, once a traveling stage for dancing snow– flakes melted and tree-strands as thinned as seasoned stones in a sick man’s throat.

The Great Waterfall refuses to gleam.

She creates a hungry whirl-pool to catch those who stole her stream, polluting her with tar and pitchers of unrule.

Two sons of Earth feel the rain on their feet, The puddles swallow their toes in the dirt.

While most climate related news sounds alarming, 2023 marks a major year for positive climate impacts. Here are five important developments that occurred this year contributing to a green future: .

1 Since the election of the Brazilian president, Lula da Silva, deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest has dropped by 60% over the course of one year. This is a reversal of trends set by his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, who set records for deforestation to produce grazing land for cattle. Lula has also committed to partnering with local indigenous groups to ensure the rainforest stays protected for the foreseeable future. (Source: Reuters, February 10, 2023)

2 President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act has already surpassed expectations, with nearly 5x more federal investment into green technologies than initially anticipated, totaling up to $1.2 trillion public dollars, plus over double that amount in private investments. Most of this money is going towards battery manufacturing, EV tax credits, and components for solar and wind production. It’s estimated that this legislation alone will drop US emissions by 32-40%. They’re on track to reach their 2030 emissions target – a third of energy produced by renewable sources – by then, five years ahead of schedule. This figure will only increase as time goes on, with renewables making up more and more of the energy makeup as solar gets cheaper to build, and more households choose to install it on their roofs. Progress isn’t inevitable, and we must fight to ensure that it continues, so our society doesn’t backslide into old habits and change our future for the worse.

an affectionate rendering of the mini compost bucket (really a reused yogurt container) in my family home.

I think that compost deserves still-life drawings, as beautiful and attentive as fresh food and plants do.

Using markers and a pointillist technique, I rendered this ordinary compost bucket in a vibrant, colorful way.
