Concept Inspired by the structure of a tree, the Peavy Lodge Forest Education Center looks to act as a beacon in the forest that also serves as a demonstration for mass timber construction. Peavy Lodge creates spaces of shelter underneath its cantilevered floor similar to that of a tree overhang. The dynamic facade acts as a protective barrier from the elements resembling a tree's bark that breathes life into the building. Peavy Lodge’s roof structure imitates the complexity of a forest canopy while allowing light to filter through openings in the roof, connecting users back to nature through the architectural structure. These elements combined create a beacon in the McDonald-Dunn forest that creates an ethereal, glowing object set in the forest scenery.

Site information

N Located in the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest, the site sits roughly at a 45 degree angle facing NE and SW. The grade of the site from the upper road to lower road is roughly 18' in level change, with the most level changes occurring near the roads leaving the immediate site fairly flat. To the northeast and northwest there are large parking lots, a smaller lot is located off the corner of the building. No additional parking needed to be added for this project. Due to the location in the forest, the site receives very little direct sunlight and is most often shaded by the large trees surrounding the site.

Site analysis

The solar path wraps the lower edge of the building while prevailing winds come through the site From the southwest and smaller sources from the northeast and northwest. Noise from both roads are minimal but noted for relationship to the building site.

Preliminary designs

The concept of this glowing object nested inside the forest interested me from the start of the design process.

Through my case study I was inspired by the delicate laciness of the roof structure and usage of translucent materials to create the dappled light from a forest canopy. I drew inspiration from the tree as a form and tried to draw inspiration from its natural traits that could be manipulated and translated through a built form in a different way.

This building is composed of a material local to the region establishing a sense of place and pushing the efforts to understand the relationship between the structures we create and the environment that the resources are harvested from.

The relationship between the natural world and the built environment play a crucial role in our future towards a more sustainable future. Treating run-off water from streets in bioswales around the site, to harvesting rainfall for non-potable usage within the building help to demonstrate the possibilities of using resources responsibly within our N

Bio mass systems use water to heat and cool buildings through radiant tubing that help to condition spaces. They are a in a range from 75 - 90 percent efficient. This system reduces loads on the building compared to other traditional mechanical systems and also allows the building to demonstrate systems on a larger scale. Since bio mass uses pellets comprised of wood chips and the like, forest management can be related to the harvesting of slash piles from the local forests to fuel the building’s energy loads, creating a symbiotic relationship between architecture and

Outdoor classroom

The outdoor classroom concept was to construct this small space using modular blocks that could be a variety of different configurations, they had to be small enough a person could easily carry a single module. Therefore, each module is based on a 16” x 16” module for seating height. This concept could also lead to competitions to be held each year between engineering and architecture students so that each year the design would change for the classroom. It is a tension system that holds the system together along with metal velcro straps between block panels dealing with shear forces.

Mass timber pavilion

The pavilion was designed using a limited amount of 3-Ply CLT panels that could be cut using the technology from CNC machining to easily be assembled and disassembled as a pop-up pavilion. My design incorporated joint connections influenced by woodworking carpentry to bring a sense of craftsmanship into the mass timber piece.
