Shifting Horizons, features oil paintings by artist, Seth Tane. In this body of work, Tane’s position brings us closer to the subjects he explores in cityscapes, metropolitain modes of transportation, and industrial machinery. More recently, Tane has chosen to set these industrial elements in contrast with natural landscapes, sometimes using text and sound to further his narrative. Seth Tane was born in New York City in 1953 and has been fascinated with the sights and sounds of the urban environment from childhood. With a natural facility for tools and constructing things his early goal as an artist was to build sculpture, first as a teenager in welded steel, and then later at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early ’70s working in mixed media. His appreciation of realist paintings always beckoned however, and he kept at learning the craft until he eventually considered himself a painter. The purchase and conversion of a small oil tanker in New York harbor in 1979 as studio space and live-aboard was an initiation into the working waterfront and precipitated earning a captain’s license, learning to dive and setting up shop to do marine towing, diving, commercial salvage, launch service and line handling. During the same period he built and converted truck mounted cranes and used specialized equipment and techniques to perform rigging and transportation services of monumental sculptures for artists, galleries and museums in the NYC area.
