As we start to slowly enter the summer and hopefully creep out of this global pandemic, I want to take a couple of minutes to thank all of the residents of Monticello. This is the sixth issue and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our great business partners and the involvement of this great community! Thank you to each of the residents that have provided their time and their pictures to share with the rest of the neighborhood. It has been my pleasure to read your stories and share with your community.

Part of how we help build community with the great neighborhoods that we produce publications for is we have monthly social gathering events for the residents of the same communities.

Obviously that has been our most challenging part since we are living through the only other pandemic since 1918. But we are ready to start having some events, safely of course. This will be a come-and-go event where you will get to meet and mingle with other neighbors, myself and my content team and some local business owners. Through the years of giving to many nonprofits with big hearts and dreams to end human trafficking, it became clear we needed to focus our giving on organizations that provide a web of support in the anti-human trafficking realm: nonprofits who work together, creating an effective force and network where their impact is greatest. Love Justice International, Rescue:Freedom International, and International Justice Mission, are our 2021 N2GIVES nonprofit partners. All three organizations pour their heart and soul into their work, each serving as a separate but vital player in the anti-trafficking movement by employing their own unique strengths and working with those who have specific expertise in combatting slavery. Here are their stories.

Love Justice International

There are many tactics used by traffickers to trick vulnerable people into slavery. In an all-too-common scenario, victims are lured away from their homes and escorted into bordering countries by the promise of a much-needed work opportunity.

It’s only when the victim arrives as a complete outsider, with no one to turn to for help, that he or she realizes the true nature of the “work.”

This is just one of the tactics Love Justice International (www.love justice.ngo) is on a mission to disrupt.

The nonprofit currently operates 56 transit monitoring stations at prime border crossings in Nepal, India, Bangladesh, and South Africa that are known for their unassuming role in a victim’s journey into slavery. By crowd-watching for any suspicious behavior and questioning potential traffickers and victims, Love Justice has successfully intercepted more than 22,000 people from exploitation.

Rescue:Freedom International

We’ve supported Rescue:Freedom’s (rescuefreedom.org) mission in the past, yet one of our biggest changes

in giving this year is supporting their Local Partner Network (made up of smaller nonprofits fighting sexual slavery). This model shares best practices, consults in helpful areas, and financially supports a part of each local partner’s budget for the year. We are excited to give to RFI’s network and to connect smaller local groups we’ve supported in the past so they can receive more than just financial help along their way to making a greater impact.

International Justice Mission

IJM (ijm.org) believes every person deserves to be free, and they partner with local justice systems to end violence against those living in poverty.

Restoring victims from slavery and then bringing the criminals who committed this crime to justice – ensuring traffickers cannot exploit anyone else – is how they work toward ending slavery in our lifetime. IJM works with local authorities in 13 countries to restore victims of violence, forced labor, and sex trafficking, fight in courtrooms until slave owners are put behind bars, and provide training and support for local law enforcement to end the cycle of violence and injustice.

How long has it been in business? Four years

What prompted you to start your own business? My journey of learning how to cook for myself (self-taught), healing my acne in the process, blossomed into a passion project, that is now fulltime! I realized I was on to something when friends and family wanted my recipes and kitchen tips!

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (whether general or specific) can you offer to the residents of your neighborhood? Be open to change!

I never would have guessed this was going to be my career path.

I lost my job in an industry I have been in for 10 years, however, because of that, I was able to put more time and effort into my brand and in the process found a career path I’m more passionate about, and could not be a better fit! In addition, I also found a great group of female leaders to surround myself with that have enriched my life so much! Embrace the change and the process.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in New Hampshire! Lived in Colorado for four years before moving to The Woodlands, TX, to go to high school. Then, landed in Fort Worth in 2002 for TCU and have been here ever since! Fort Worth is the absolute BEST! Tell us about your family: My husband, Brent, and I have been married for almost nine years and we are a big-dog family! We have a boxer and Dalmatian-lab mix that we adore, and when we are not home, we are most likely traveling! My husband has the opportunity to travel coast to coast and I love tagging along and seeing the country.

What are your hobbies/interests? Besides cooking up a storm, I love any opportunity I get to travel, hot-yoga, coffee dates with friends and a good Netflix series I can binge-watch!

How did you decide on this industry (events that led up to where you are now, where you went to school, etc.)?

I‘m a 2006 TCU grad with Communications Major and Minor in Sociology, started in B2B sales, then spent 10 years in the Oil & Gas Industry...I appreciate all my education and experiences that led me to find my true passion in this life and it really was a passion turned business situation! It didn’t happen overnight. It started with me wanting to learn more about food and nutrition!

I was TIRED. Tired of: spending money eating out during my first few jobs out of college. Tired of aimlessly wandering around grocery stores overwhelmed. Tired of feeling hung-over from unbalanced meals. And the big one: TIRED of breaking out like a teenager, even as an adult. I talk a lot about this on my Instagram page, @bowlobsessed. Then learning how to treat my brand as a business and take it seriously! The opportunities and people. I have met along the way have the most valuable, and how I landed a new career in the Marketing and Brand development world.

I got him off of the Texas Humane Society adoption website! I saw his baby picture four years ago, and knew I had to have him!

Is there a story behind its name? I love human names for animals! My parent’s cats are named after presidents and royalty, so I decided to name him after Teddy Roosevelt, but I am looking for a brother to add to the family and I want to name him after a food like Toast or Beans!

Anything special or unusual about them (talents/quirks)?

He cannot meow, which saves me at 3:00 am! He is also leash trained and loves to walk around the neighborhood with his skull and cross bone harness! Look out for him on your next walk!

What do you like best about your pet? He is very social and loves people! He will walk up to any stranger and ask for pets!

Any funny stories? Any funny story is when he flies! He is asked to get out of his carrier and likes to love on the TSA workers!

How spoiled is your pet? The most…my parents even come to visit him when I am in school.

Spring is here, Monticello! I want your wardrobe to reflect the beauty of the season this year. Get ready to flaunt your spring spirit in these 2021 spring trends and colors that I have personally picked out for you. I spent a few days browsing local Fort Worth boutiques and picked the top two for this spring so that you don’t have to. The pieces I picked out, which are photographed on this page, are inspired by the blooming tulips on the TCU campus and the Pantone color of 2021, yellow!

Esther Penn is one of my absolute favorite Fort Worth boutiques all year long. They are located at 3328 W 7th St. across from Righteous Foods. I found such beautiful spring pieces almost immediately. Longer-length dresses are definitely in trend this year. So, finding a long yet lightweight dress is the key. The one I found at Esther Penn is easy and breezy! Plus, it has a refreshing tie-dye pattern of pastel spring colors that is very pleasing to the eye. Their yellow swimsuit will have you effortlessly rocking the color of the year. One-piece swimsuits are always in trend. Here, I paired it with a pair of jeans, as it is a very versatile piece of

clothing and can be worn in the pool or on a date night. Esther Penn also has a bunch of cute accessories in store. All of the accessories pictured are theirs as well.

Dear Hannah is a Fort Worth favorite. Not to mention, it has a stellar location on the Trinity at 1621 River Run Suite 121. This is my go-to boutique for buying gifts and funky accessories. The shop is always colorful, especially in the spring. The long sleeve crop top I picked out has the perfect floral pattern. This top can be paired with shorts for a day on the town or jeans for a happy hour with friends. Dear Hannah had so many adorable spring dresses that it was hard for me to choose just one, but I had to pick the casual blue and white flower-printed dress. The fit of this dress is amazing. Also, the sleeves can be worn down for a shoulder-less look or up for a more put-together look. The versatility of Dear Hannah’s pieces are the icing on the cake!

Owners: J&M Hospitality, John and Meggie Schissler When did you start in this career? We began our career in the restaurant industry in with our first store opening in the summer of 2016. Neither of us had any previous restaurant experience, so it certainly was (and still is!) a daily learning process and adventure.

What made you decide to go this direction? I had been working on the marketing team in the Chicken Salad Chick corporate office in Auburn, AL for a few years when the brand decided to expand to Texas. As a born & raised Texas girl who was always looking for a reason to move back, John and I began to discuss the possibility of franchising this concept.

Our love for the brand and desire to be small business owners continued to push us into discussions with the CSC founders, and before long we were the first Chicken Salad Chick franchisees in Texas!

What makes your business different? We have always loved that dining at Chicken Salad Chick feels like eating a meal at a friend’s home. We are proud to make all of our chicken salad by hand each day, allowing us to offer our guests a fresh, quick alternative. Also, in addition to being closed on Sundays and maintaining reasonable hours of operation, we also work hard to offer our team an encouraging work environment that allows for a family/work balance.

What are the long-term goals of your business? With plans for several more area restaurants in the coming year or two, we are excited to offer this unique and delicious concept to more communities in the greater Fort Worth area. We love watching how each of our five locations has taken on the personality and character of their specific communities, and we look forward to finding new ways further our involvement in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Are you involved with any charities or non-profits? Our young brand is very fortunate to have already established the Chicken Salad Chick Foundation that works to fight cancer and feed the hungry. Our efforts through the foundation have allowed us to partner with the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Rutledge Cancer Foundation as well as several others through the various chambers of commerce events.

1930s MONTICELLO

BUILDER: LYDIA DELLA INGRUM In our neighborhood of architecturally significant 1930s cottages, one builder has played an outstanding role in the construction of a large majority of these homes. Della Ingrum was born October 11, 1882, in Trenton, Texas, to Edward and Ardella Tomlinson. She married Edward Dell Ingrum in 1903. The lngrums would have two children, Margaret Ingrum Kemble and Edward Ingrum, Jr. Edward Ingrum, Della lngrum’s husband, would open Eureka Chemical Company in 1909, and then die unexpectedly two years later.

Three years after her husband’s death, Della Ingrum would lose her only son, Edward.

Shortly thereafter, Della Ingrum would sell the Chemical Company to her brother-in-law, Esta A.

Baldridge, and in so doing would begin a new career in real estate and construction. Over one hundred years ago at the age of 34, Della Ingrum would join her nephew Tom E. Brock to form the Ingrum and Brock Real Estate Company and later the Monticello Land Company. Tom Brock was to be the designer and Della Ingrum would be the builder. They would build numerous homes in Fairmount until the day Tom Brock would come into their office and announce that he had just heard of new land available far west of downtown in a new development called Monticello.

One of their first homes to be constructed was 3501 Bristol, and was probably used as the company office, although there is no absolute verification of this.

126 Williamsburg would be constructed soon after and would become Della lngrum’s personal home. The Ingrum/Kemble families would retain ownership of 126 Williamsburg for years. To this day, Williamsburg Lane is predominantly composed of Mrs. Ingrum homes. And while she would deviate on her architectural plans from time to time, the majority of her Monticello homes would be one-story cottages with pier and beam foundations, hardwood floors, knotty pine paneling, front porches and/or bay windows. One of her favorite design features was a central dining room with corner cabinets. This room would have four interior doors exiting to the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom wing and a back porch. It is worthy to note that construction in the 1930s would be accomplished without the addition of central air and heat, dishwashers, disposals, ice makers, and significant garages. Luckily large windows to facilitate cross ventilation of air would be a must-have. In later years Mrs. Ingrum would have the opportunity to custom build larger homes throughout Monticello, Rivercrest, Crestwood, and Ridglea.

While we have no records giving us the exact number of homes she would build, the estimate is far in excess of 200 homes.
