OLD BRIDGE HOSTING 5K

The Mayor’s Health and Wellness “Run for Heroes” 5k, a signature event in our beloved Township, will kick off the spring season on April 20, 2024. This exciting event promotes a healthier lifestyle and brings our community closer together, showcasing the spirit of unity and camaraderie that defines Old Bridge.

Mayor Debbie Walker envisions this event as an opportunity for all residents to challenge themselves physically and mentally. In her own words, she states, “I hope that the ‘Run for Heroes’ 5k inspires everyone to step out of their comfort zones and push their limits. It’s not just about the race; it’s about discovering the strength within ourselves.”

What sets this event apart is the emphasis on earning rather than purchasing recognition. Every

I love riding my bicycle. Matawan has some interesting streets to ride down as well as close access to the Henry Hudson Trail and Cheesequake Park. Lately I’ve noticed more and more dangers in riding in traffic. We should all be reminded of New Jersey law regarding cyclist and motorists. It can be found at https://www. nj.gov/transportation/commuter/bike/ regulations.shtm. Here are some key points:

“When in use at nighttime every bicycle shall be equipped with . . . A front headlamp … [and] a rear lamp.”

“A bicycle must be equipped with a bell or other audible device.”

“Bicyclists should not … practice any trick or fancy driving in a street.”

moted one of our best young police officers to the rank of Sergeant”, Deputy Mayor Margaret Montone stated after the meeting. “We are excited for our two new Patrolman and know they will serve Aberdeen well.”

Due to recent investments by the Township Council, The Aberdeen Township Police is currently staffed by 42 sworn officers, 1 Class II SLEO, 10 civilian Dispatchers, 3 civilian support employees

“Every person riding a bicycle on a roadway is granted all the rights and subject to all of the duties of the motor vehicle driver.”

“Every person riding a bicycle shall ride in the same direction as vehicular traffic. In New Jersey, the law states a bicyclist must obey all state and local automobile driving laws. A parent may be held responsible for the child’s violation of any traffic law.”

“In New Jersey, anyone under 17 years of age that rides a bicycle or is a passenger on a bicycle, or is towed as a passenger by a bicycle must wear a safety helmet.” (I always wear a helmet. If you’ve ever fallen on a bike, you’d wear one, too.)

“The operator of a motor vehicle approaching a … bicycle, when possible under existing safety and traffic conditions, [shall] make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the pedestrian or personal conveyance; if a lane change cannot be made, … leave a reasonable and safe distance of not less than four feet.” (If you can’t safely provide four feet, slow down, and stay behind the bicycle until you can.)

For the safety of everyone, riders and drivers alike, please review the New Jersey laws. We all want to enjoy the streets and highways safely and respectfully.

MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE

Matawan Mayor

Businesses are choosing Matawan! On the weekend of March 16th, I attended two grand openings, along with some of the Council for new companies in town: Beautify by Luna, a permanent make-up service located at 87 Main Street, and Greyshore Studios, a photography studio at 750 Route 34, where we did a ribbon cutting with members of the Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Business Development Commission. We welcomed both new businesses to town, thanked them for choosing Matawan as their home, and wished them continued success! Then, on Monday, March 18th, I attended the Economic Business Development Commission meeting, attended by over twenty businesses. The purpose was to share with the businesses that we are there to support them, the purpose of the commission, and how we can work closer together for a better Matawan. They met fellow business owners, learned about some of the things the commission has been working on, and provided feedback, which will be incredibly helpful to

the Council and me as we move forward with the agenda and work on bringing economic opportunities to Matawan.

On March 22nd, Matawan hosted the Bayshore Mayor’s meeting at another local business, Hudson Square. Mayors from around the Bayshore towns attended, and we discussed various issues including statewide issues that impact us like affordable housing and other challenges.

Lastly, our Chamber of Commerce will have a B2B multi-chamber event on April 25th from 5:30-8:30 pm to bring together businesses across counties. For more information, please look at macocnj.com.

I want to thank all the businesses in town who have been here and recently joined us for choosing Matawan. If you need anything, please reach out to me at joseph. altomonte@matawanborough.com.

DEANN GUNN, MATAWAN COUNCIL PRESIDENT CREDITS, DEDUCTIONS: ITEMIZED OR STANDARD

If you lived in a “flat tax” world when you receive income, you pay tax on the money received. We don’t live in a flat tax world. Money received is income, but is all the income taxable? Accountants talk about credits “above the line”, “tax deductible”, or “tax exempt”, but what does it really mean?

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar amount of money that can reduce your income and is an “above the line” amount. A credit lowers the income amounts and determines your adjusted gross income (AGI). A 401k or IRA contribution is a credit and reduces your adjusted gross income, AGI.

A tax deduction is an expense you can subtract from your adjusted gross income. Itemized expenses are charitable contributions or medical expenses that can be deducted from your income. A credit is better

than a deduction at lowering your income. Combined, a credit and a deduction lower your taxable income. Your income level determines your tax percentage rate. Your percentage rate determines your tax. The lower your income level, the lower your tax. A standard deduction is a flat deduction, it does not include your expenses, it is a final amount to deduct from your income. To determine your final tax, use the higher amount, either itemized or standard. You can decide which one to use, itemized or standard. The choice is yours.

WAS THE MARCH 2024 SAT TOUGHER?

While the March 6th, 2024 SAT that Christian Brother Academy (CBA) administered was reported to be in-line with the difficulty level of practice materials released by the College Board, the March 9th exam has sparked discussion in academic circles due to reports that it was more challenging than those materials. Test-takers of the March 9th exam were surprised by the discrepancy in difficulty, prompting concerns about preparedness and the effectiveness of available study resources. The digital transition of the SAT was intended to reflect a more accurate measure of students’ readiness for college-level work, incorporating adaptive testing that adjusts the difficulty of each content area’s 2nd module based on the examinee’s performance. However, students who sat for the March 2024 exam reported that the harder 2nd module—

particularly the math— was tougher than the practice materials provided beforehand.

Critics argue that while the College Board’s intention to modernize the test and make it more relevant is commendable, the execution may have fallen short. The lack of alignment between practice materials and the actual test can lead to misaligned study efforts and undue stress among test-takers. This disparity highlights the necessity for the College Board to ensure that their practice materials accurately mirror the actual exam in difficulty.

Educational experts stress the importance of comprehensive preparation strategies that go beyond the practice materials, advocating for a broader approach to test readiness. This includes familiarizing oneself with a wide range of question types and difficulty levels, as well as building test-taking stamina and adaptability.

The feedback from the March 2024 SAT underscores the need for continuous evaluation and adjustment of the preparation

materials provided to students. As the SAT continues to evolve, so must the resources and strategies employed by students to prepare for this pivotal examination. The College Board seems to have foreseen this disparity. Yesterday (as of the writing of this article), the company released digital and linear SAT tests 5 and 6. Early reports are that the test is more in line with the difficulty of the March 9th exam. Each SAT is equated to account for variability in difficulty between tests. Hopefully the “curve” on the March 9th test is generous to students. Suggestion for a topic? You can reach me at Paul.Pscolka@ivymasters.com 833-SATsACT 833728-7228 www.ivymasters.com

Spring is much more than a seasonal shift; it presents an opportunity for mental and spiritual renewal. As nature undergoes its annual rejuvenation, we are reminded of the potential for fresh beginnings and revitalization. ABERDEEN MAYOR, COUNCIL AND POLICE CHIEF PARTICIPATE IN “READ ACROSS AMERICA

Read Across America is an annual event organized by the National Education Association (NEA). It typically takes place on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The initiative aims to encourage reading and celebrate the joy of books. Many schools, libraries, and community organizations participate by organizing reading events, book fairs, and inviting guest readers, like the Mayor, Members of Council and police officers, to engage with students and promote literacy. To help celebrate, Aberdeen Township Mayor Fred Tagliarini, Deputy Mayor Margaret Montone, Board of Education Commissioner Jack Montone, Councilman Greg Cannon and many of the Aberdeen Township Police Officers, including Police Chief Matthew Lloyd, read to the children in the Matawan-Aberdeen School District

at Cliffwood Elementary, Lloyd Road School and Strathmore Elementary. Police Chief Matthew Lloyd arrived at the end of Officer Evan Guastaferro’s LEAD (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) Class, reinforced what the children learned during the class and was able to read his new favorite book, “Artie the Doughnut”. “These kids are the future. They are the future police officers and Chiefs of Police. The work we do today in these classrooms not only build the trust the children should have in their community police officers, but it works to remind the children that the Aberdeen Police Department are here to protect and serve them”, stated Police Chief Matthew Lloyd. Smiling ear to ear and listening attentively, the children after the readings were full of questions for the Mayor, Council and Police Chief Lloyd regarding their positions in government. “The children were just awesome,” said both Councilman Greg Cannon and Deputy Mayor Montone afterwards. “This is the best part of the job as an elected official.”
