The Anthem Way 3 Greetings! As the summer winds down and kids return to school, I am reminded again of the overwhelming beauty of our quaint Anthem community. One can go to our parks and see families gathered and children playing together. A walk through the grocery store reveals neighbors engaged in friendly banter. On any given day, our facilities are filled with residents laughing, crying (if you’re in one of the many hardcore fitness classes!), discussing, planning and enjoying life. Around town, children of all ages are having fun at our splashpads, pools and water park along with local bike enthusiasts, dedicated walkers and runners making full use of the miles of trails, bike lanes and sidewalks. Though we come from different places, have different interests and are of various cultures, ethnicities and races, we are one in Anthem. We are Anthemites and we are proud! As our community grows, you will see some enhanced amenities and a few new amenities in the coming years. It was heartwarming to behold residents engaged in the Facilities Master Plan process as they brought unique ideas, proposals and strategies to the table. As a result, the Board of Directors approved a plan that will enrich our community and render the residents more of what you desire. I anticipate more of this type of collaborative effort as we continue to work together to shape a community that is family friendly, forward focused and embracing of all. Fall will also bring lots of fun events and I look forward to seeing you at them! You can read more about these in this issue. I also look to see you at an upcoming Board Meeting or otherwise participating in the governance of our wonderful community. Like you, I love this place and what it’s given to my family. So, why not consider serving on a committee, getting involved with your HOA, or attending some of the regularly held safety meetings? We all have a part to play because we are Anthem! And, it’s the ‘we’ that makes Anthem great! See you out and about!

Nothing seems more refreshing than a dip, dunk, slide, or swim at Anthem’s lap pool and Big Splash Waterpark. Thanks to the board of directors, modern technology, and ACC’s dedication to residents, the water in our aquatic amenities are kept cleaner for less cost than ever before. The original pool system, installed in 1999, was a series of eight, very large tanks with the typical sand-based water filtration. This outdated system required repeated maintenance, frequent replenishing of chemicals, and weekly backwashing wasting thousands of gallons of water. It was time for the twenty-year-old system to be replaced using previously allocated funds. ACC performed its due diligence before presenting their findings and recommendations to the board of directors. A high-tech water purification system was found that could accommodate the increased pool/waterpark usage. Before the 2022 swim season, ACC installed one of the most effective, state of the art water filter systems, “The Defender,” with its regenerative media filters. This powerful system removes additional micro particulates to produce the clearest, cleanest, and safest water possible. The cost savings comes from less maintenance, lower electricity and chemical usage, and uses ninety percent less water to accomplish better results than backwashing. Water activities has always been a safe and fun offering for Anthem residents. Now, everybody can frolic knowing Anthem water is clean to twenty-first century standards.

The public is invited to Honor, Salute and Support our veterans and their families at the Anthem Veterans Memorial Annual Veterans Day Concert and Ceremony. The Anthem Veterans Memorial begins its second decade of educational programming with an exciting program that will bring new elements of patriotism to the event. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a concert of patriotic music performed by ProMusica Arizona Chorale and Orchestra. Then President Obama designated from May 28, 2012 through November 11, 2025, that our nation will commemorate and honor our Vietnam War veterans as they did not receive the welcome home deserved of all veterans who sacrifice to serve our nation. This commemorative pin symbolizes our recognition and respect for our Vietnam Veterans and allow us to personally say to them, ‘Welcome Home.’Thank you to the Daisy Mountain Veterans who will assist us in this Welcome Home pinning.

Overseeding: green grass for the winter season In order to maintain green lawns through the winter, homeowners with turf need to overseed the Bermuda grass that thrives in the summer. Reminder letters for all homeowners with grass in the front yard will be sent out and will include a timeline of when overseeding should occur (typically early-October) and when the green lawn should be established by.

Garage sale guidelines

• Garage sale signs are permitted on the day of the sale only in the homeowner’s front yard.

Holiday Decorating Reminders

If you’re thinking about putting out pumpkins, or fall decorations like gourds or squash, be aware that these may attract wildlife when displayed outdoors. Javelina and coyotes eat some of the vegetables that are part of traditional holiday displays. When displayed outdoors, they may attract wildlife to homes, potentially creating conflicts with people. According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, once javelina become habituated to human-food sources, they will often roam the neighborhood on a regular basis and lose their fear of people. Javelina, especially when startled, can be aggressive toward people. They are a threat to dogs because they can’t tell the difference between a family pet and a coyote (which is one of their predators).

FALL DÉCOR MAY ATTRACT WILDLIFE

The department recommends that decorated pumpkins and cornucopias be displayed indoors on window sills, and then discarded securely to help prevent encounters with foraging wildlife.

New Sod, Baseline and Irrigation Changes and Turf Treatments

to complete upgrades to the Anthem sports fields. This summer, all the softball and Little League fields received some TLC while teams took a break from the Inheat.addition to our regular maintenance work, DLC’s in-house construction department, called Special Projects, is available for jobs that require heavy machinery or skills outside daily landscape work. DLC Resources worked with Anthem’s Community management and board to plan and time the projects while the fields were less in demand.

New Sod & Weed Treatment on Soccer Fields

So what projects did DLC do for the sports fields?

10 COUNCIL NEWS

>> DLC Resources.com/learning-center

Sharp, straight lines of turf help the field look professional. Crews add sod to Little League 2.

Contributed by William Redford, DLC FieldResourcesManager Arizona summers are known for their timeittemperatures, scorchingbutwastheperfectforDLCResources

Time Out for Tip Top Turf

We brought in more than 2,000 sq. ft. of sod (a particular turf for playing fields) to fill areas where current turf had worn thin. All seven ball fields received sod on the foul lines to help create crisp, straight lines. Crews used a sod cutter and string to place turf for sharp, professional edges. In addition, several bare spots in the outfield were replaced with sod, particularly around Center Field, where players tend to stand in a similar location each game.

Baseline and Irrigation Changes to Softball 3 & 4:

DLC also did sod repairs on soccer 3 & 4. Similarly, we used a string and sod cutter for top-notch results. Soccer 1 & 2 wasn’t overseeded last winter and the summer Bermuda came in very strong; however, we have been treating these two fields for a nutsedge infestation this summer. Nutsedge is a nasty weed that was probably brought in on a player’s cleat. It is very difficult to get rid of, and we have laid down five turf treatments this summer to try to reduce its growth. Besides this special work, DLC Resources regularly cares for the sports fields by mowing, edging and treating for weeds. We adjust irrigation amounts and keep the system is proper working order. Each spring, crews use our Mini-sweeper to efficiently dethatch the turf (removing a dead layer of material at the soil level) to help the Bermuda come back as strong as possible. Anytime Anthem’s young athletes need any additional help with keeping their playing fields #1, just put us in the game. DLC is on deck and ready to hit a home run for Anthem.

New Sod for Softball and Little League Fields

The Community wanted to increase the infield baselines on softball fields 3 & 4 to 90 ft., which qualifies the field for usage for high school, college and pro teams. To do so, DLC had to remove some outfield turf, which required revamping the irrigation system. Working collaboratively, our Water Dept. came out to redesign the sprinkler layout, while our GIS Dept. captured the information to create accurate maps for installation and future Aftermaintenance.thesystem was installed, our skilled Irrigators balanced the system to ensure coverage is accurate with little overspray.
