New Plants for a New Year!
Contributed by William Redford, DLC Resources Field ManagerNew plants bring life, color and a sense of revitalization to a landscape. DLC Resources has been working with Anthem Council’s Community Management to plan and complete several new plantings in your Community. Towards the end of 2022 and in early 2023, our on-site maintenance team and a Special Projects crew installed numerous fresh plants, trees and cacti to enhance Anthem and help keep it looking beautiful! Planting locations are chosen carefully; areas are almost always highly visible to maximize the impact and investment. Recent or upcoming planting projects include:
New Trees
Young trees are a promising new addition to any landscape. DLC has planted more than 53 trees recently in various spots around the Community. Some went in at the Dog Park, Community Center parking lot, Liberty Bell Park and in medians along Daisy Mountain, Gavilan Peak Parkway and near the Community Center. Anthem lost trees in October during an unusually fierce windstorm so many of new installs went in spots where trees fell due to storm damage.
New Plants
Plants including shrubs, succulents and cacti can also be a long-term addition to your landscape. They help an area to feel more complete and frequently bring a colorful touch through bright green leaves or flowers. Anthem has numerous shrubs and cacti, but sometimes plants die and leave bare spots. Javalina also can eat vegetation and occasionally car wrecks in medians result in plant loss.
DLC typically chooses from among Anthem’s natural desert plant palette, like Ocotillos, Barrel Cactus, Lantana, Bird of Paradise, Fairy Duster and Yellow Bells. Some areas strategically receive more flowering plants to add color to a spot that needs it. Some recent plant additions include on the hill east of the pool at the Community Center, the Country Club tunnel by the Community Center, various medians, the vault by the lake and the Civic Center roundabout.
Saguaro Replacements
Anthem’s landscape is greatly complemented by numerous saguaros proudly standing watch in your Community. But periodically, some develop diseases or begin to lean excessively and must be removed before they fall. Replacing them is tricky and involves paperwork, as saguaros are protected by state law. DLC works with a specialized contractor who has specific equipment to install heavy and potentially dangerous cacti. A vehicle with a mechanized, padded truck bed delicately but securely holds the saguaro during transport. After we dig a hole and prepare the location, the truck bed lifts to help slide the cactus into the ground. A small excavator helps with tighter spaces and lighter cacti, although even 4-foot spears can weigh hundreds of pounds! Anthem received 12 new saguaros that mostly went in around the Main Park.
Community Center Entry Enhancement
The Community Center entrance on Anthem & Freedom Way received a major enhancement recently with plants typically found around Anthem including Mexican Bird of Paradise, Prickly Pear, Ocotillo, Blue Glow Agave and more. Over 165 plants were installed at the entrance and in a main median in the parking lot! Boulders in two different sizes were also added. DLC’s Special Project Dept. handles sizeable plant installations so your on-site crew can still get their regular work done.
Upcoming Entry Enhancements
Even more exciting are enhancements soon to be done at the North and South Waterfall entrance and the Daisy Mountain entrance. In total, these projects will include almost 400 new trees, plants and cacti! New boulders will also add to the refreshment.
