DAY ONE CONGRESS RECAP The Haiti National State of Health Congress was a huge success resulting from the collaborative effort of Ansanm Pou Ayiti and Relink Global Health. With over 200 participants in attendance, we spent two days together learning and discussing challenges and solutions for healthcare in Haiti.

Theme

Learning & Understanding The Current Situation & Challenges The first day of the Congress was designed to provide attendees with an opportunity to learn about the history of Haiti’s healthcare system and current policies in place, with a better grasp for Haiti’s past to comprehend how and why we are here in the current climate today.

They also educated attendees on what has not worked in the past, with an eye towards facilitating change to how we approach addressing healthcare issues in Haiti.

A presentation was made by the Task Force for Global Health, highlighting their experience with collaboration and sharing some of their models they’ve used around the globe.

DAY ONE

REGIONAL BREAK OUT SUMMARIES What are the biggest challenges you face when trying to deliver consistent high quality healthcare?

NORD DEPARTMENT 1. Challenges with finding medications and maintaining inventory 2. Isolated communities and transportation difficulties 3. Need for collaboration to create efficiencies and increase sustainability 4. Lack of specialists to treat complex cases SUD DEPARTMENT 1. Access -Knowing who is doing what, not enough high quality facilities, access to meds, supplies, and equipment, new facilities that are empty because they cannot sustain operation 2. Quality - Lack of clean water, lack of electricity, and lack of supplies 3. More collaboration needed between orgs to create efficiencies - Too many orgs working as islands- we should be able to share resources 4. Unsupportive government - No govt funding to support sustainability - Can we have more from MSPP attend these events? They are invited and should always attend 5. Frustration over talking about problems with no real tangible change OUEST DEPARTMENT- PORT AU PRINCE 1. Patient education - Patients don’t know what’s available and where to find quickly. Patients don’t understand that prevention is more cost effective and life saving than treatment. Education is needed to prevent injuries and avoid dangers of self-medication and complications.

2. Factors affecting quality - Accommodations at public clinics- Lack of quality facilities, patients wait all day in the heat, lack of supplies, and equipment

3. Factors affecting access - Again. patients don’t know what’s available and where to find resources quickly. Patients are also inable to pay the fees requested to maintain clinic sustainability

OUEST DEPARTMENT- OUTSIDE OF PORT AU PRINCE 1. Patient education- The group believes the overall health burden would be amazingly less if the population was well educated on health preventative measures. They say parents waiting too long to seek help, voodoo solutions, and lack of understanding of the value of good healthcare create a lot of unnecessary burden on the healthcare delivery system.

2. A close second that is in line with the first is healthcare provider education. They felt if you could improve the quality of education for Haitian healthcare providers, the quality of care provided would go way up and improve patient outcomes 3. Birthing Centers- In the southern area of the Ouest region – Leogone- Gressier area- MSFDoctors without Borders abandoned a free birthing center program they had been running about 18 months ago. The free care they were giving away put Haitian physicians out of business and then when MSF pulled out there was a huge void of care created. Currently, there are very few options in this region if a mother has complications during child birth.

4. Access - The group would like to see a strategic action plan within the region to map out a referral system, ID overlaps and gaps in care and connect orgs with one another.

5. Quality trauma care - Too difficult and time consuming to get critical patients to hospital in PAP CENTRAL DEPARTMENT- PORT AU PRINCE 1. There needs to be more collaboration amongst NGOs, hospital and clinic leaders, government officials and patients. All collaborators should be willing to listen to one another.

2. All constituents involved in providing services and/or aid should take on a Haiti-centric approach to their operations, focusing on delivering care and information within the context of the Haitian culture.

3. Hospital leaders in a given region are open to working together, where they once were working separately. In the North, over 130 health centers work together. Practices and facilities can collaborate while each being responsible for a certain specialty.

4. Intervention within the supply chain industry and information sharing amongst regions are critical.

5. Staffing and logistics within rural areas are difficult to coordinate and maintain. Regional approach service centers can help various industries like services, human resources, biomed and supply chain.

6. The initial and ongoing education of nurses and training are missing thoroughness, quality and consistency. Practitioners in these fields need to be trained and educated beyond passing exams.

DAY TWO CONGRESS RECAP Theme

Discovering Opportunities & Models for Change The second day of the Congress was designed to provide attendees with an opportunity to hear from investors, executives, professionals, and students to hear different perspectives regarding the opportunities available in Haiti to create jobs, improve working conditions, and contribute to lasting change.

Day Two focused on addressing solutions. Discussions took place regarding access to care, improving quality of care, and from there we moved into analyzing effective models within the country specializing in different areas such as equipment management, supply chain management, dental care, oncology, maternal health, and more. Practical examples were shared to encourage participants to listen and brainstorm on ways to implement innovative practices to tackle their biggest challenges and collaborate to be more efficient and effective.

Keynote Speaker, Daniel Jean-Louis delivered an informative keynote speech on opportunities for impact in healthcare touching on topics such as integrating humanitarian aid and medical care with business and the importance of sustainability and delivering quality.

The second day closed with a breakout session by specialty. Participants broke out into groups including emergency medicine, pediatrics, oncology, physical therapy, and mental health to discuss their current work and projects and share ideas, chal11 lenges, and solutions pertaining to their specialty.

DAY TWO

MEDICAL BREAK OUT SUMMARIES The following challenges and recommendations were made and discussed during the medical specialty break out sessions: PEDIATRICS • Access - Challenge to procure and keep all needed medications in stock, parents delaying care due to lack of access, funds, or knowledge of severity of condition • Educating parents on looking for behavior changes and being able to give a good history of illness, while also educating on the importance of breastfeeding • Responding to emergencies, administering CPR, and addressing end of life issues are always a challenge • Clinically, they are seeing a lot of skin issues and pediatric HIV cases in the Croix de Bouquet area MEDICAL EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT AND INVENTORY • Importance of collaboration and coordination to best utilize trained biomed capacity that is available • Educate facilities on possibilities with a medical equipment management program, ID partners for the program, conduct facility equipment inventories.

• Develop strategy for deploying repair technician resources within one region (Nord) of Haiti • Develop equipment procurement strategies that move towards standardization of equipment to facilitate training and repair • Marketplace analysis of Haitian medical equipment companies-Work with and empower local Haitian equipment businesses DENTAL • Dental mapping project - ID all licensed Haitian dentists in country and all facilities currently operating. ID gaps and opportunities • Share and expand model for sustainability dental clinics in Haiti • Utilize NA dental professionals for training and education and to support remote mobile clinics • Implement mobile clinic strategy to reach most needed areas OBSTETRICS • Collect data on what services are being offered where - Use this info to ID gaps in care • Gather data on status of prenatal and delivery care at partner facilities • Education and training for front line community health workers in prenatal care • ID partners and provide prenatal and delivery care kits and training to reduce infant and maternal mortality • Work with partners to provide care kits at low cost and high volume

SUPPLY CHAIN STRENGTHENING • Gather data on current supply chain channels clinics and hospitals are currently utilizing- What’s working? ID gaps and areas to intervene to support facility operations • Many factors make maintaining inventory a huge challenge- Lack of funds, infrastructure, lack of availability, etc • Conduct marketplace analysis on what is currently available in Haiti regarding medication and supply availability. ID possibilities for partnership and gaps that can be filled by collaboration ONCOLOGY • There is chemotherapy available in Port au Prince, Mirebalais, and Cap Haitien. Radiation is only available in the DR for now and it costs around $3000 per patient.

• Cervical cancer screening with VIA/cryo is going on at 15 or so sites around the country. Every departmental hospital has it available.

• For more advanced cases, they can be referred into Port au Prince, Gonaives, Mirebalais, and Cap Haitien for colposcopy/LEEP. • HPV testing swabs are available for $10 each, including materials and lab costs. Swabs can be picked up from Port au Prince or Cap Haitien and are good for 2 weeks outside the fridge after the sample is taken and 4 weeks inside the fridge after sample is taken. They don’t need to be refrigerated before the sample is taken. Turn around time for results is two weeks.

• Palliative care is available at IHI and Mirebalais. IHI can help programs to find narcotics for their palliative patients.

PHYSICAL THERAPY • The importance of physical therapy in Haiti needs to be discussed on a broader level. There is a need for awareness of services available • The accreditation of the Society of Haitian Physical Therapist (SHP) – We must ID trained, qualified PT professionals ADULT/ FAMILY MEDICINE • Professional education - Medical education system in Haiti, particularly the availability of residency training positions in internal and family medicine. There is a serious lack of residency training available for physicians in Haiti, especially government-sponsored positions. Partners in Health, a large international NGO, offers training in several residency programs of its own, but in our discussion, we found that many of our smaller NGOs instead offer informal training in our specialties and subspecialties.

• Professional career opportunities - Poor compensation for Haitian primary care physicians.

• Patient education - Need to prevent patient-physician conflict over herbal remedies and other non-scientific approaches to healthcare by treating the patients’ beliefs with respect and working with non-Western medicinal practices when appropriate and safe.

Education & Training A recurring point of distinction would be that there are good things and bad things that teams and organizations do and implement in Haiti. Locals are craving more appropriate and thorough education instead of basic training. Foreign practices should focus on education and training over forming mobile clinics and mediocre medical centers. Education and training empowers Haitian health care professionals. The public also needs to be educated on certain standards to reduce higher costs and pitfalls (like voodoo and delaying medical attention) to avoid death and emergency situations. Foreign organizations should also be open to learning and understanding the landscape and environment of healthcare in Haiti.

Collaboration and Learning There are many groups working on practical solutions in Haiti. We ought to be encouraged by our failures and that of others. We must be open to listening, understanding, and participating. Organizations working on similar projects or have similar missions are encouraged to join forces to expand on talent, skills, and resources to make a larger impact.

Sustainability Healthcare and economic development are inter-related. The healthcare industry in Haiti can be restored, despite its challenges. Quality healthcare should be a top priority. Training and standards in this industry should be defined and elevated to a high degree. The healthcare industry can create jobs for the people of Haiti, creating a web of employment within various trades. Healthcare is expensive but can be funded by adopting a practical model. Poverty is a consequence of the lack of jobs. Companies involved in the healthcare industry can provide individuals with disposable income through employment so that they can afford healthcare. Organizations ought to come in with a business mindset and look towards sustainability, focusing on longevity of a practice by practically managing budgets and operations, rather than giving services and goods away, reinforcing independency.

RECOMMENDATIONS for CHANGE While Haiti is not currently in a crisis-situation, now more than ever we should be working together to leverage our resources for the better good of Haiti, operating with a sense of urgency, excellency, and quality. We should look

long-term into increasing access to care and overall quality of care by providing knowledge and tools to healthcare leaders to run sustainable operations.

A Look Ahead: What’s Next for Ansanm Pou Ayiti

Inspired by how powerless and heartbroken I felt after visiting Ayiti many times after the earthquake then later after the devastating hurricane Matthew, I decided to create a platform to mobilize change for effectiveness, sustainability and empowerment. I soon learned that this would be no easy task to do alone and realized that the best way to accomplish what I envisioned would be by embracing collaboration and team work. As a result, I launched Ansanm pou Ayiti, Together for Ayiti.

Ansanm pou Ayiti is committed to making an impact by facilitating capacity building, strengthening relationships for effective and collaborative work in Ayiti. We want to achieve a new level and standard of globalization that Ayiti has yet to see. We are creating sustainable activities that will enhance and inspire development across all sectors.

Last year in October, we launched the APA Nonprofit and NGO summit discussing the effectiveness of aid in Ayiti at Karibe hĂ´tel. We discussed and analyzed challenges and solutions to change the way aid is given, received and used in Ayiti where over 200 participants including government officials, NGOs, entrepreneurs, civilians met for a period of 3 days. Needless to say, it was a great success, with a very positive turn out.

During the summit we created a safe and productive environment for individuals and organizations working across all sectors to come together to express frustrations, hopes, and solutions. As promised, each organization that attended got a chance to meet one on one with the Ministry of Planification to ask questions and receivie valubale information and answers regarding the legalization of their operations. For one lucky organization, the Minister of Planning, Mr. Aviol Fleurant, approved their paperwork on the spot! They were very grateful. The Minister and his team spent over two hours in a panel going over the processes and the importance for all organizations and foundations to be properly registered with the Haitian government.

After this summit, we decided to create further programming to address healthcare in Ayiti among several other topics such as agriculture and education. Our commitment is to inspire individuals and organizations to continue their efforts in improving quality of life in Ayiti. We want to empower individuals to be the

change and lead the change that they desire to see within their communities.

The time has come for us to take charge by making it possible for all citizens of Ayiti to gain access to healthcare, to all the resources and education and employment to better serve and thrive and move forward towards development, independence and freedom.

We will achieve all that by working together. Ansanm Pou Ayiti will continue to launch new initiatives through collaboration. We encourage all of you to not give up, network, and share resources. Be involved, aware and knowledgeable of the facts. Thank you for your dedication and willingness to make a difference. And as always, let’s work together for Ayiti.

We will be launching and promoting the following impactful initiatives: 2018 Ansanm Pou Ayiti Nonprofit & NGO Summit The Ansanm Pou Ayiti Nonprofit & NGO Summit gathers representatives, advisors, leaders, and game-changers from Haiti’s local and national governments, nonprofit agencies, international and regional NGOs, investors, donors, research institutes, and the private sector to come together for three days in Haiti to discuss the effectiveness of aid, facilitate idea exchange and relationship-building to cultivate a positive and collaborative relationship between representatives in Haiti and its international supporters. The summit aims to equip and empower attendees to better identify and execute on concrete, actionable solutions to challenges faced by nonprofits and NGOs operating in Haiti to make a more meaningful impact.

The Young Haitian Author Incubator Ansanm Pou Ayiti is proud to start a movement helping young, talented writers become published authors. APA is committed to helping young writers write, publish, promote their next book and launch a profitable career as an author.

Collaboration For Women’s Entrepreneurship Ansanm Pou Ayiti is excited to provide opportunities to support and empower women in pursuing business in Haiti and the US. The Ansanm Pou Ayiti Membership Network Ansanm Pou Ayiti will launch a membership network to bring together like-minded and forward-thinking individuals and organizations to fulfill our mission to inspire the birth of collaborative initatives and transformative ideas for unity, progress, and fulfillment in Haiti for all. Together We Can- Collaboration Key to Solving Tough Global Health Problems Relinkglobalehealth.org exists for the sole purpose of providing significant, and sustainable solutions to some of the toughest challenges that plague healthcare delivery in developing nations. Providing healthcare in a resource deprived environment is extremely challenging and confounded when institutions work in isolation.

Relinkglobalhealth.org seeks to identify and support organizations working on the front lines through technology solutions that create connectivity that leads to increased access and improved quality of care. In 2018 relinkglobalhealth.org launched their Haiti mapping and connection project that lists services and maps all organizations and individuals that provide services throughout the continuum of healthcare in Haiti. This is a first project of its kind to aggregate all service providers in one quick, searchable, and mobile optimized platform. For the first time, users will be able to identify providers in each department of Haiti. By seeing the overlaps and gaps relinkglobalhealth.org will create connectivity between organizations.

Phase I of the project is set for completion by summer 2018 following with Phase II which will identify operational support tools for organizations, calendared events, and collect valuable data. After testing relinkglobalhealth.org in Haiti they plan to scale the project to other developing nations. Relinkglobalhealth.org is proud to be co-hosting the 2018 Haiti National State of Health Congress on May 10 and 11 in Port au Prince with partner Ansanm pou Ayiti. This is a truly collaborative effort to bring together both Haitian and North American organizations providing Healthcare in Haiti from all sectors of healthcare to address the challenges and share collaborative solutions that are being implemented throughout the island. After this larger national conference relinkglobalhealth.org plans to support more intimate regional conferences that address challenges in the communities and in the institutions. The challenges faced in delivering high quality healthcare in Haiti are very real but Ansanm Nou Kapab!

ONGOING COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY RELINKGLOBALHEALTH.ORG UTILIZE COLLABORATIVE NETWORKS TO IMPROVE: 1. Supply chain- Identify organizations that want to improve their access to high quality medications, supplies and equipment. Provide these orgs tools to establish formularies and manage inventories. Provide these orgs with access to formulary items of the highest quality and best possible price on a consistent basis 2. Medical equipment management and repair- Identify organizations that acknowledge that inappropriate and non-functioning medical equipment drastically affects patient care. Provide these orgs with repair support, inventory management, and equipment procurement startegies and support. Strategically place repair technicians and share their expertise among facilities in a particular region 3. Maternal health and reduce infant mortality and maternal death- Identify what prenatal and delivery services are available all over the island- Location and exact sevices available- Mapping project. Provide participating organizations with community health worker training, patient educations, and delivery kits to facilitate healthy deliveries.

4. Dental care- Roll out model for sustainable dental clinics in Haiti that employ Haitian dentists and leverage fee for service models to fund salaries and support mobile program to reach remote areas.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Understanding The Healthcare Ecosystem in Haiti Panelists Nicole Muller Cesar Mme Nicole Muller César est née en Haïti à Port-au- Prince le 26 Mai 1950, Nationalité Haïtienne, Mariée et Mère de deux Fils. Elle est actuellement dans le Circuit de la Télécommunication (CONATEL) une Institution Publique et Autonome Chargée de la Régulation du Secteur au Niveau Nationale. Depuis 2011, Mme Nicole occupe le Poste de Chargée de Mission #1 et elle est aussi Directrice Responsable de l’Unité de Support Communautaire USC pour la Direction Générale. Mme Nicole a voyagé pour études et des raisons professionnelles en Europe, les Caraïbes, aux Etats Unis et L’Asie. Elle a peaufiné ses Etudes Universitaires à Wentworth Institute, Umass of Boston University, Boston University, University of Virgin Islands et Korea University. Elle fut également la Fondatrice, Présidente et Directrice Exécutive Générale de l’IHCD. Ayant pour objectif l’intégration et la réhabilitation de cette catégorie dans la société traditionnelle. En reconnaissance de son

En Mars 2009, Nicole César a reçu le prix «Femme de Mérite» (Woman of Honors Award) de la Fondation DEFI à Tara’s, Boutillier, Haïti. Cette distinction honore le travail acharné de Mme Nicole César au service des Haïtiens défavorisés et de la Diaspora des immigrants et autres groups ethnies pour le Développement Social et Communautaire. Ce prix « Femme de Mérite» a été décerné à 15 autres femmes Haïtiennes pour leur Leadership, leur Compétence et Contribution bénévolat à la communauté Haïtienne et ailleurs dans différentes disciplines. Un livre d’Or a été publié à leurs intentions exposant leurs valeurs individuelles.

Parallèlement, Elle fût la Directrice de la Santé Publique à Fonkoze (Fondation Kolé Zépol). En tant que Directrice de la Santé Publique dans les 10 départements du pays. A Fonkoze Elle a pris le Leadership de l’Administration pour l’identification des ressources de santé publique pour les clients de Fonkoze et a développé des partenariats Nationaux et Internationaux afin d’assurer que les clients de Fonkoze aient accès à des fournisseurs de services de santé disponible dans leurs communautés qui se concentrent surtout sur la malnutrition et autres pathologies chroniques, ainsi que des tests de dépistage de multiples maladies complexes pour les enfants des clients de Fonkoze. La Directrice de Fonkoze travaillait également en étroite collaboration avec les partenaires des Organisations Non Gouvernementales spécialisées en Santé Publique pour mieux parer à la gérance administrative pour répondre à l’extrême pauvreté et l’exclusion dans les zones rurales d’Haïti.

Mme Nicole reconnaît que tout le monde, sans exception, fait des erreurs. Il s’agit d’un élément inévitable dans le processus du développement humain. En plus comme une Personne Auto-Fait, motivée par son désir d’excellence, ses meilleurs enseignants ont été les leçons apprises, des défis qu’elle a rencontrés dans le cheminement de son évolution personnelle, du bénévolat et de sa longue carrière professionnelle. Dr. Paultre Pierre Desrosier Paultre Pierre Desrosiers, is a seasoned public health physician with specialty in tropical and infectious diseases, epidemiology and medical anthropology and clinical and public health programming experience working in many developing countries. He has more than 25 years experience in Africa designing and managing complex and large-scale country and regional programs, including those involving conflict and post-conflict environments in areas such as such as Health Systems Strengthening, HIV/AIDS, Malaria, TB, Maternal health/PMTCT, NTDs, Child Survival and Protection, MARPs, OVC, nutrition in public health and food security, gender-based violence and Refugee Health Program.

He received a Bachelor in Science degree from Northeastern University, a Master in MPH from Boston University School of Medicine & Public Health, a Medical Doctor degree from Université d’Etat d’Haiti, Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie and the D.E.A in Applied Anthropology from Université de Nice, Sophia Antipolis in France. Thereafter, he worked as an independent consultant for UNDP/Haiti, United Negro College Fund, United States Pharmacopeia (USP), USAID/Mozambique, Africare, Save the Children Foundation, UNFPA/Mali, and MACRO International on a variety of public health issues related to Africa and the Caribbean.

From 2004 to 2016, Dr. Desrosiers served successively as the Senior Technical Advisor/HR for Health imbedded in HR/Training department at the MISAU in Mozambique then Public Health Expert/Technical Coordinator at Ministry of Health National Rehabilitation Programme (PNR) in Angola for GTZ/GIZ, Regional Technical Advisor: Health, TB and HIV/AIDS for Catholic Relief Services (CRS), CRS/WARO, Dakar, Senegal. He also joined Family Health International (FHI360) as the Associate Director/Technical and then Chief of Party of the Clinical HIV/AIDS Services Strengthening (CHASS) and subsequently Acting COP for the Supporting the Efforts of Partners (STEPs) project in Malawi and Senior Technical Advisor/Global Technical Lead HIV/AIDS and TB for MSH. While with MSH, Dr. Desrosiers was charged to develop a guide to Standard Operating Procedures for the Diagnosis and Management of Extrapulmonary TB in Afghanistan through the Challenge TB Project/Afghanistan, USAID’s flagship global mechanism for implementing the United States Government (USG) TB strategy. Dr. Desrosiers has worked in more 25 countries in the developing world. He has lectured Nutrition & Public Health at the Instituto Superior de Ciências e Tecnologia de Moçambique MPH program, Public Health at the Health Sciences Institute of Maputo, Mozambique, Community Health at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Facultade de Medicina, Maputo, Mozambique and Medical Anthropology/Sociology at the School of Nursing, Cayes, Haiti and internationally recognized public health and infectious diseases expert. Dr. Nadege Belizaire - Physician Conducted research on breast cancer at harvard loooking at the barriers when breast cancer women are seeking in Haiti and comes with the pelerinage therory in care. Dr Nadege Belizaire has experience in women health and breast cancer care and she is now the medical director of Haiti Clinic in Cite Soleil.

Dr. Kobel Dubique MD, MMSc-GHD - Physician Dr. Dubique is a postgraduate from the Latin American School (ELAM) and also owns a Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery and Social Medicine (MMSc-GHD) at Harvard Medical School (HMS). In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Dubique begun his humanitarian career as a societal first-responder and later as an emergency response coordinator with Partners In Health (PIH)/Zanmi Lasante (ZL) at the largest IDP camp Park Jean Marie Vincent where lived an estimated of 50,000 people.

His team managed the efficient delivery of healthcare, cholera life saving support, water, food, sanitation, and shelters to thousands of distressed families according to the sphere project (The humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response) and the humanitarian principles. He is a co- author of the bestseller book “Haiti after the Earthquake” written by Paul Farmer (Doctors under tents). He received awards and gold medal for his leadership after the post earthquake response. From 2012-2014 Dr. Dubique’s research analyzed the effectiveness of the humanitarian activities undertaken by Zanmi Lasante in the wake of the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He explored the role of accompaniment played in positive outcomes (health security, job creation, community engagement and empowerment, etc.) in humanitarian aid after the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Dr. Dubique is still promoting the accompaniment model as an approach to humanitarian aid for better social justice, better humanitarian aid delivery, and better collaboration between the local community, local government, and the NGOs when faced similar disasters in other parts of the world.

Dr. Ted Kaplan , Founder - Cap Haitien Health Network Dr. Kaplan is a pediatrician in an underserved area with high amount of Haitian immigrants in Orlando, Florida. He did his medical school and pediatric residency at the University of Miami, in the area he was born and raised.

He and his wife Elisabeth, who is Haitian-American, took their first medical mission trip with Project Medishare in 2007. In 2008 after several learning and helping trips around Haiti, formed the Cap Haitien Health Network with the goal of connecting and supporting the many health programs occurring in the greater north. There are now over 120 organization and 125 health facilities in the Network in the north, connected by a Facebook group, Yahoo email group, semiannual meetings, and Network Support Team with Haitian staff and volunteers. The Network organizes medication/ supply distributions, volunteer advising and placement, new program support, connecting members to resources, and representation of the members with national and international organizations and forums such as todays.

Haiti’s Health Policy: The Future of Health Governance Dr. Grenson Jeune MD, FACS, FICS - Medecin-Chirurgien Medecin-Chirurgien et apprenti entrepreneur, le docteur Grenson Jeune se trouve en pratique medicale et chirurgicale aux Gonaïves dans le département de l’Artibonite, Haiti, depuis 2004. Alyssa Leggoe, USA AID Health Director lyssa Wilson Leggoe grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill for undergraduate studies. She subsequently worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. and then completed a Masters in Development Studies at the University of Kwazulu Natal in Durban, South Africa as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. After returning from South Africa, Ms. Leggoe completed a Master’s in Public Administration at Princeton University where she focused on international development and health policy. She then joined the Kaiser Family Foundation as a HIV Policy Analyst before joining USAID in 2005. Since joining USAID, Ms. Leggoe has worked in Russia and Mozambique. She speaks Russian, Portuguese and French. Ms. Leggoe is married to a USAID Foreign Service Officer and has three daughters.

Presentation - Task Force For Global Health Vivian Singletary - Director, Public Health Informatics Institute Vivian Singletary, MBA, serves as director of the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII), a program of The Task Force for Global Health. In this role, Vivian guides PHII’s work to improve health outcomes worldwide by strengthening health practitioners’ abilities to use information effectively.

Vivian came to The Task Force for Global Health in 2009 after more than 15 years in leadership positions in supply chain management for Home Depot and M&M Mars. Before joining PHII in 2011, Vivian was global supply chain manager for The Task Force’s International Trachoma Initiative where she helped manage the distribution of Pfizer’s antibiotic donation for the control and elimination of blinding trachoma.

Annie Vander Werff - Executive Director, Community Health Initiative Annie Vander Werff holds the high privilege of being the very first Executive Director for the Community Health Initiative, Haiti. A role she accepted in 2015.

She earned a Master’s degree in Community Health Education and a Certificate in Global Health & Health Disparities from the University of Northern Iowa. She has had the great fortune in her life to lead multiple community and public health development teams across the United States, Mexico, Africa and now Haiti.

Dr. Vincent DeGennaro - Founder, Innovating Health International Dr. Vince DeGennaro is an internal medicine doctor and global health specialist who has worked in seven countries and speaks five languages. He has lived in Haiti since 2012. He works at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine part time and part time in Haiti with two health service delivery non-profits. He is the Founder of Innovating Health International and the Medical Director for Haiti Air Ambulance, Haiti’s first emergency medical helicopter service. A staunch advocate for social justice, he fights to increase access to healthcare in developing countries, including helping to build national cancer programs in Rwanda and now runs a breast cancer program in Haiti. Through the two non-profits and research in Haiti, he hopes to inform the landscape in order to expand healthcare access in Haiti.

Matt O’Connell - Hope Smiles Matt O’Connell has been an executive in the dental industry for more than 20 years and is currently the President of VITA North America located in Orange County, California. He has worked around the globe leading businesses dedicated to introducing innovative dental products and services to new markets throughout Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

After completing a degree in Political Science from San Francisco State University, Matt joined the Peace Corps as a volunteer in the Dominican Republic. For three years he worked on water and sanitation projects in the Haitian communities on the Haitian/Dominican border. It was there that he first learned of the exceptional strength and resilience of the Haitian people. After his service, he went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

After the 2010 earthquake, Matt returned to Haiti for the first time in thirty years. Impacted by the devastation, Matt took a year-long work sabbatical and began a collaboration with the J/P HRO community health team and leaders in the global dental industry to establish a high-quality and safe dental clinic. The clinic began in the Petionville IDP Camp and then moved to Delmas 32 in 2013. In 2016, Matt joined the Board of Directors for Hope Smiles and facilitated the collaboration between Hope Smiles and JP HRO with goal of taking the dental clinic to the next level. The clinic now employs three full-time dentists trained at the University of Port-au- Prince and 1 dental assistant. The clinic is open 6 days a week and sees over 6,500 patients per year.

Over the past five years, with the aid of Hope Smiles, the Hope Smiles/ JP HRO Dental Clinic is close to achieving its goal of empowering Haitian trained dental professionals After returning to the business world, Matt continues his work with J/P HRO with frequent visits to the Hope Smiles/JP HRO clinic to facilitate training and capacity building programs to help assure a fully sustainable clinic and that our doctors and staff achieve their exceptional potential and deliver optimum care to the

Barry Ewy, CEO - Blessings International Barry Ewy is trained as a pharmacist and lawyer and is today currently serving at the CEO for Blessings International. The ministry was originally created to serve as a source for donated and low-cost pharmaceuticals to mission trips. Today, Blessings International provides pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to clinics and hospitals in developing countries, and to some in the United States. Opportunities for Impact Keynote Speaker & Panelists Daniel Jean-Louis - CEO of Bridge Capital Born in Gonaïves, Haiti, Daniel spent his childhood seeing first-hand the efforts, successes, and failures of the aid industry in Haiti. Attending Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia on a scholarship from the Turnbull Leadership Program, Daniel studied business administration with a concentration in leadership, and this education helped him to understand the patterns he’d begun to recognize back home.

Daniel Jean-Louis is an international speaker on business-driven growth in the developing world. He has shared his ideas in over 15 countries around the world including Ecuador. He lives in Port-au-Prince with his wife and two children.

Throughout his career, Daniel’s work has been driven by the idea that job creation is the best strategy for eliminating poverty. From 2009-2014, Daniel served as country manager for Partners Worldwide, a 501c3 dedicated to ending poverty through enterprise. He was instrumental in launching the 100K Jobs initiative, equipping NGOs and Haitian businesses to partner together and meet local demand. Since its inception, the project has created over 15,000 jobs on its journey to create 100,000 new jobs by 2020. Daniel continues to serve on the project’s board and train Partners Worldwide’s business coaches.

In March 2016, Daniel published his first book, From Aid to Trade, which examines how aid can hurt, and how agencies can rethink their development approaches to help break the cycle of poverty.

Putting his concepts into practice, Daniel founded Trinity Lodge, a small-business providing afford-

able short-term housing in Port-au- Prince, Haiti; is a co-founder of Bridge Capital, a private investment firm that helps local businesses finance projects and compete for contracts; and he serves as a professor of business at Quisquéya University and the Haitian State University. As an educator, entrepreneur, investor, and speaker, Daniel hopes that his ideas will help bring industry back to Haiti and begin to restore the nation.

Dr. Jean Gardy Marius - Co-Founder Organizasyon Sante Popile Dr. Jean Gardy Marius was born in the village of Les Cayes in southern Haiti. He graduated from UTESA with honors and was awarded a scholarship to Charite Universite in Berlin, Germany where he obtained his masters degree in International Health. In Berlin he studied at Manchester University in England and completed his second Masters in Global Health. After being outside of Haiti for almost seventeen years, he returned with the mission to help the most vulnerable in his country. Although an effective health system is fundamental to the development of any nation, a lot of people around the globe do not have access to basic healthcare services, even in industrialized countries. In developing countries, the situation is worse due to most of the population are deprived of basic physiological services for their survival, especially in rural areas. Haiti is one of these countries where the access to basic healthcare is very difficult and almost nonexistent for those living in the countryside.

Aware of the situation, a group of Haitian professionals composed of Dr. Jean Gardy Marius, Dr. Sterman Toussaint, Dr. Guidner Bien-Aime and others toured the country to analyze and provide an effective solution to this problem.

After assessing the situation in different provinces, in mid-2007, they decided to take action based on the definition of health according to the world health organization (WHO). The definition states: “health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,” By the end of 2007, they organized its first mobile clinic in the locality of Rousseau, near Montrouis, a remote area of Arcahaie, around 100 kilometers north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Due to the impact of mobile clinics in various zones, it was decided to formalize the organization.

On March 8, 2008, Oganizasyon Santé Popile (OSAPO), was founded to promote reproductive health, education, clean water, sanitation, agriculture, nutrition without causing further damage to the environment. OSAPO’s vision focuses on sustainable projects to reduce dependency on foreign aide and support families to build there own future.

Barbara Campbell, Executive Director - ReLinkGlobalHealth Barbara Campbell graduated from Pharmacy school at the University of Minnesota in 1993 and has worked in pharmacy operations and management for over 20 years. Over this time she developed van interest in working with individuals to provide real, lasting changes to health and well- being that go beyond medications. This led her to continue her education and in 2008 she completed her certification as a clinical nutritionist.

In 2010, she had the opportunity to serve in Haiti right after the devastating earthquake. This was truly a life changing experience. Fueled by her faith and desire to follow God’s direction for her life, she accepted a position with Mission of Hope Haiti as their Director of Medical Operations. Through this experience she has gained valuable experience working in resource challenged areas and has a passion for supporting local healthcare

professionals and businesses. Knowing that poor health hinders a person’s ability to fully live life and maximize potential, she has the desire to see high quality, sustainable health care become available to everyone. It was in this role that she developed a vision and passion for organizations to connect and work together to create efficiencies and sustainability.

Barbara recently joined the Dalton Foundation team and is project leader for relinkglobalhealth. org. She is very excited for the opportunity to take what she has learned and work toward implementing lasting changes in healthcare delivery throughout the world. She brings with her the strong desire to work with organizations and utilize technology to develop high quality, sustainable healthcare delivery systems.

Izabella has owned and operated a boutique and several businesses, worked in both the private and public sector in several leadership role. She is a mother of 2, avid reader and nurture lover.

Guy Pompilus, Secretary General, National Commission for Innovation and Socio-Professional Insertion, Professor at l’Universite d’Etat D’Haiti & Consultant Mr. Pompilus led the efforts to improve teacher capacity countrywide in Haiti.
