Art Gallery & Apartment Complex | spring 2023| Brooklyn, New York

An emphasis on repeating spaces and curvature are two of the focuses that drove the exterior design of this building. The preliminary diagrams below are intended to show the main architectural idea of the structure and form of this art gallery and apartment complex. The final developed and materialized front facade is shown on the right.

Ground floorplan Gallery & Courtyard

The curved shape of the ground facade aims to invite pedestrians into the courtyard and gallery. The alleyway allows the courtyard to belong to the street sidewalk. The two entrances seperate gallery visitors from the apartment residents.

Clifton Forge Amtrak Station
| fall 2023 | Clifton Forge, Virginia
A series of concentric circles define the design concept for this new Amtrak train station in Clifton Forge, Virginia. The perimeter of the given site hugs the existing train tracks on a slight curve. The structure of the new waiting platform follows this curve. The way each part of the new train station structure is offset to its neighbor mimics staggering trains in a rail yard. In this way, program defines form.
The steel frame structure for the main part of the train station is sectioned off in 30 foot increments. The floor plan was developed with structure in mind. Floor to ceiling windows on the southeast and northeast facing walls capture morning light and allow passengers to see when trains are approaching.

The choice of material and the overall shape of the new station is relevant to its location. Clifton Forge, Virginia has a rich history with the railroad industry. The new Amtrak station is meant to look industrial and mimic a rail yard. Board formed cast in place concrete walls, floor to ceiling tempered glass panels and a copper roof make up the exterior material composition of the station.
The copper roof is lightweight, resists hail, high winds, snow, and fire and can easily withstand drastic temperature changes. In addition, it is easy to maintain and it ages beautifully. Copper oxidizes over time and turns greenish turquoise instead of rusting.

Nature Observatory for the Visually Impaired
In an effort to create a non-visual experience of nature, sound, smell, and touch are to be the most predominant senses experienced by visitors to this observatory for the blind. The absense of conventional walls allows for the occupants to experience all of the smells of nature, feel the wind, and hear the birds chirping and the wind blowing. Occupants navigate the space on ramps with handrails that hug a set of three enlarged steps which serve as seating. The benches are positioned to resemble theater seats. In this way, the occupants are observing nature as if it were a play with no actors. In addition, the entirety of the space is covered to protect the visitors from potential rain or harsh sunlight. At the top of the ramp, the roof has openings that create a unique shadow experience on the floor.
