ABOUT The day before yesterday connecting and connected, tying and tied, pulling and pull, to present day and the day after tomorrow.

The moment is a part of fragmented scenes in a single thread of linear time. The scene we keep in the printed paper, or just pictures in our mind, is just merely how we frame the bigger perspective, narrowing it down to the image we like to archive. So does the narrative story construct the history of humankind.

Wander, Wonder is a portative apparatus which want to irk or intrigue curiosity. This project asks the onlooker to experience the story by looking into a diorama inside of the bamboo telescope. Wander, Wonder tries to present how the structure itself connects and connected, supports and supported, influencing each component on how we try to shape a certain perspective.

This project is the first installation of the Wander, Wonder series.

PROLOG Tele-past derives from two different phrases, ‘tele’ a Greek word of remote, far off or at a distance and ‘past’; a period of time before and what long gone. Tele-past is also an acronym of a telescope to the past.

Telescope, as we know, is a tool that helps us to see the far away objects that plain eyes cannot see. As well as the grand concept of the installation is making a telescope-shape from bamboo, which people can look into, as if they can see some long gone past that has been left and forgotten.

ABOUT Ngayogjazz is annual jazz festival in Yogyakarta that continuously takes place within the village around the city. This festival invites urban people who mostly likely love jazz music to experience the festivity of sub-urban or rural live when it comes to a fest. For this year festival, the committee selects Gilang Harjo as the host village. The village has a long history relates to the beginning of the Mataram kingdom that nowadays known as the Yogyakarta itself.

A long time ago, the village was a swamp area between two political territories in the east and west side of the area. Local people believed that the land had a higher geo-magnetic field than its surrounding area, proven by the natural phenomenon that strangely only occurs in that place such as higher intensity of lightning struck, strange pattern of uncovered area of heavy rain and fallen meteorites. Long short story, Sutawijaya, the founding father of Mataram kingdom, sat and meditated in one of the meteorite stone in that land, and got an enlighten to establish a kingdom in the Central Java. The capital kingdom then moved to the northern part, nowadays it is known as Kotagedhe, because Sutawijaya didn’t want to arise a conflict between two others territories.

Because of the meteorite stone scattered around those area, there was a lot of local metal workers that use the metal from the meteorite as an important material of making ‘keris’, a traditional curved hand swords of Java. If you see today in the center of Gilang Harjo Village, you can find a small area of where the local have kept the meteorite stone where Sutawi-

jaya meditated in a small house. The stone itself has become a sacred artefact that people or pilgrims still believe they can get enlighten if they pray or do a ritual there.

With this strong historical background of the village, the artistic curator of this jazz festival, the Frog House Community, initiated a new program to commemorate this story, named ‘situ.s.eni’.

It derives from wordsplay. ‘Situs’ in the archeological context means the site, where the artefact has been found. ‘Seni’ means art. ‘Situs Seni’ means a site where you can find the art that reflects tothe archeological context in those place. It also can be read differently, as if it is a question or a remark. ‘Situ’ means you, or the second subject. ‘Situ Seni’ can be understood as a question ‘Is it art?’ or a remark ‘It is art.’.

The program of ‘situ.s.eni’ itself, invited 3 collaborators to initiate an art installation in their responds and reflections toward the site context. One of the collaborator is an independent mural Artist, named Prohatmoko Moki who then painted fragments of stories in the wall of several old abandon houses. The second is Dwi Dowek, a program director of IVAA Archive also a video maker that worked with Wilujeng, a young traditional dancer from the local community. Their project was making a video of Wilujeng’s dancing, and projecting the video into a traditional kitchen of the oldest house in the village, which is so mystical.

And the last, is myself, as a young architect who enthusiast working with bamboo, given an abandon house building of one of the local’s relatives to respond.

IDEAS The historical context of the village, inspired me to create a small collection of pictures from the past for visitors to look at. It is like a series of historical photography but indeed, that historical moments once upon a time, no one captures it. How we reconnect to the story that long gone and unknown, except you’ve been told? How we can see those far away past?

The installations invite visitors to look for a couple stories from the past

by looking through a telescope, where I put a papercut diorama inside. Imagine, admits the festivity of the jazz music, under the roof of night sky, in dim of hydrogen light of neighborhood, you are searching for the story from the remaining past, by finding and seeing through the telescope, you are one step nearer to that past moment. At that time, you can reflect yourself, you can find yourself feel the energy, the memory, and the unknown world beyond that accumulate in that area.

ABOUT Froghouse is a community based which mainly working with bamboo and art for the festival.

The community itself based in Bantul and their community diverse between architects, artists, musicians, and art workers. Their project mainly focuses on designing and creating the atmosphere of the festival through bamboo as material’s exploration.

In April 2018, Frog House Community was invited by Shih’erliao Community to work on land art for Hakka Festival in Shih’erliao, Hsincu, Taiwan. After several time working

together for their projects, they invited me as one of the collaborators. We worked with the young community to build land arts, bamboo installations for the upcoming festival. The other two teams which were also invited to participate for the festival, a Thailand based designer who made a bamboo lantern’s installation and an Australian-Taiwan based bamboo artists who had their bamboo woven installation next to the lake, just like the two bamboo installation we made, ‘Catching Hope’ and ‘The Secret Garden’.

‘Catching Hope’ and ‘The Secret Garden’ are two bamboo installations for annual Hakka Festival in Shih’erliao, Hsincu, Taiwan. Those two installations reflected our idea of the spirit of the festival theme which tried to focus on the theme of ‘light’, ‘hope’, ‘people’, and ‘nature’.

IDEAS The site was a lake side. A first couple days of our residency, fireflies showed up in the swamp area not too far from the lake. ‘Catching Hope’ came from the idea of catching a firefly that represent as everyone’s hope. We renovated a fishing deck, which was a little bit too open and bright in the daytime, by making a woven bamboo installation on it.

People came to enjoy the scenery and gave fish food. The installation gave shades for everyone who enjoy the nature. At the night, the lamp lighted up. It was really beautiful warm tone lamp. From a far away, it looked

like a pack of orange fireflies, flyed in the side of like, and the installation just looked like a kid want to catch the fireflies.

INTRODUCTION A thermal simulation that we know happens to difficult to understand for some people. Especially when we try to explain it in the physical context of architectural models. This machine supposes to help people to understand what happened during the thermal simulation to the outside surface and also space inside.

By reading the thermal data we set before, wind flows or sunlight intensity, the sensor will calculate the data and moves the mechanism of the machine. The surface of the machine can be a representation of the building facade materials, embedded in the Arduino program, and it will respond to the data value as a result of the simulation and calculation. The outer surface moves according to algorithm evaluation of the sensor reading information, by the gears mechanic linear movement. As the result, this machine can accommodate an interactive visualization of the parallel event that happens to space inside.
