Although we didn’t really have a winter, I’m ready for it to be Spring. There’s just something about this time of year that gets me going. Maybe it’s because my kids love Easter and their egg hunts.

Thank you so much to all who came out to our last months luncheon. I always enjoy watching Dr. Mason speak. His topic on automobile “infotainment” systemdata was very educational. I also know now to never connect my phone to my car - lol.

Mr. Pham, who has spoken with authority and from experience when he has addressed the group previously, focusing initially on dealing with Meth Lab Clean-up claims and then on Marijuana Grow Houses and Hash Oil Lab related claims, will discuss Asbestos Containmination Assessments this time.

Vinh Q. Pham is Vice President of Operations at Envirocheck, Inc. and has been with the company since its founding in 1998. He has extensive hands on field and consulting experience and risk management in various environmental disciplines including but not limited to mold and microbial investigations, asbestos surveys, indoor air quality investigations, and industrial hygiene. He has also developed Envirocheck’s microbial and industrial hygiene divisions and field consultant personnel in addition to providing full technical and field training internally and externally.

Vinh has substantial deposition, expert witness, and litigation support experience in both defendant and plaintiff suits; and has testified as an expert witness at jury trials.

Mr. Pham holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Ecology from UCI. He holds a professional certificate from UC Irvine University Extension in Occupational Health and Safety. He is also a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), State of California Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC), Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC), Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE), Certified Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT), and Certified Lead Sampling Technician. He is also a Member of the American Council for Accredited Certification, the Indoor Air Quality Association, and the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.

Vehicle Infotainment Systems - The Cutting Edge of Source of Vehicle & Occupant Data

Everyone has heard of the “black box” tracking system found in today’s vehicles. But, most of us aren’t generally aware of the volume of information they collect or, frankly, some of the limitations of what they can record.

The EBCA drew a good crowd for the February 14th Luncheon, which featured guest speaker James Mason, PhD, of ARCCA. Within a short time frame, Dr. Mason explained a great deal about Vehicle “Infotainment“ Systems.

“Most vehicles constructed after 2014 have an Event Data Recorder (EDR) System,” he stated, but they vary brand to brand. Airbags do not necessarily have to fire for the recording system to engage.

EDR systems typically contain data on: acceleration; braking; seat belt use, steering; throttle; and more.

As auto “infotainment” system technology has advanced, much more data has become readily available for review by experts, he said.

Today’s infotainment systems typically connect to smart phones, track back-up cameras, and record even navigation system controls.

He shared a bit of a warning about the effects of connecting ones phone to a rented car’s infotainment system. In so doing,

the system will automatically download contact information from the phone, as well as music played and such. “Just be aware of the information you’re giving away if you choose to connect your phone.

Dr. Mason’s presentation drew numerous questions and comments from the crowd, and was very well received.

New private flood insurance offers consumers more choice New program protects Californians against devastating financial losses SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California homeowners and renters now have more options to protect themselves from the financial devastation caused by a flooding with Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones' approval of a new private flood insurance product provided by American National Property and Casualty Company.

"Flood insurance may be the only product that stands between you and a crippling financial loss," said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.

"California communities have been ravaged by historic floods. I urge consumers to consider flood insurance to protect their most valuable assets."

American National's flood insurance program is a new entry into the private flood insurance market in California and does not replace the National Flood Insurance Program, which currently provides the majority of flood coverage written in the state.

This new residential private flood insurance program offers consumers a number of coverage features, including residential building property, personal property or contents, debris removal, and additional living expenses (ALE) or lost rents. The policy term is 12 months.

"Providing consumers with more choices may lead more residents to consider flood coverage," added Jones. "Many areas of California are subject to flooding from severe storms or heavy rains. I encourage more insurers to consider entering this market."

Last October the department approved a private flood insurance product

by Homeowners Choice Property and Casualty Insurance Company.

Homeowners Choice also covers residential building property, personal property or contents, debris removal, and ALE. The company is offering limited policies to homeowners and renters whose properties have had no flood claims in the last six years.

Commissioner Jones encourages consumers to prepare for potential disaster by using their smart phone to record a home inventory, catalog their belongings and store them in their cloud account. Residents should also consider scanning deeds, insurance policies and other important documents and store them in their cloud for easy access.

The department has a number of resources to help consumers with insurance coverage or claim questions. Consumers with questions or needing assistance should call the consumer hotline at 800-927-4357.

Daylight Saving Time serves to alert us that the Spring Equinox is quickly upon us. From St. Patrick’s Day to March Madness, society seems to mirror the season. New growth and expression abounds as the days grow longer and warmer.

Our affiliated Claims Associations are in the spirit of the season, as well. In March, East Bay Claims Association kicks things off with a departure of a luncheon.

No guest speaker. Instead, it’s their first-ever BINGO EXTRAVAGANZA! This luncheon will be held on their regular 2nd Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Zio Fraedo’s. Come out and join in the fun! Sign-up now at: www.EastBayClaims.org.

Sacramento Claims is foregoing a regular luncheon meeting for March (next one is April 12th). Instead, they are celebrating March Madness with a mixer event at the Blue Cue pub in downtown Sacramento.
