HANDBUILDING 3 – LOOKING FOR SPRING!

What came first – the gardener or the ceramist? Gardening and making dishware seem to go hand in hand. Embrace the New Year and make vessels to grow herbs, garden ornaments, and even a bird feeder!

Techniques covered include: soft and leather hard slab construction and using the extruder for embellishment.

Wheel a la Carte classes are designed to move through the process of wheel throwing from centering to glaze firing. Beginners are recommended to sign up for session one prior to registering for other wheel classes. Registration for each class includes one free drop-in for the Clay Open Studio on Sunday afternoons, Monday nights or Friday mornings.

A beautiful Valentine’s pendant starts with a heart of glass. Give your special someone a gift from the heart. Learn the fundamentals of making a glass bead and put those skills to use immediately with the foundation for a striking and unique piece of jewellery. Pendants created can be used as focal pieces in the Wire 2: Weaving Wire workshop the following week. Learn how to weave wire around a glass heart to create a oneof-a-kind gift for Valentine’s Day, or to keep for yourself! Add more fun and wire technique to your jewellery designs. Start with a handmade glass heart bead and embellish with woven wire using three different weaving techniques to create a beautiful finished pendant. No previous wire class is necessary, but students may wish to create their own heart bead by registering for Heart of Glass.

This class could easily be called “How to Never Pay for Jewellery Again!” Everything you never thought you needed to know about working with wire. Make your own findings, save money, and make your creations truly unique. This is an “all about wire” class. We will tackle various techniques and you will learn to make jump rings, head and eye pins, ear wires, and make bead dangles and spiral charms. At the end of the class you will be able to construct a necklace, bracelet, and earring from start to finish with nothing but wire, hand tools, and a few beads. We will also explore finishing techniques such as a basic patina using Liver of Sulphur and polishing using a tumbler. Now you can truly customize your jewellery, as well as save money on basic findings. No previous knowledge with wire is required.

Twist wire into unique shapes and use a hammer and anvil to forge the design into something completely unique. Students interested in moving into silverwork will appreciate this great way to refine your wire skills. Create a unique focus piece for a necklace or ring with glass. A cabochon is usually a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted, which results in a smooth glassy surface with a flat back. Use glass to create a kaleidoscope of colour or a solid beautiful jewel tone. Registration for this class also includes a Glass Open Studio drop-in voucher.

Block printing is a method of using either wood, linoleum, or rubber plates to make an inked image on a variety of different surfaces. Create your own design and then learn to use cutting tools to carve away the negative space, leaving an image that can be printed onto paper and then fabric.
