No complaints filed for man’s ‘horticultural disobedience’ 16 | Industry innovators Communications: a key skill to have

By Mike Jiggens
Those with a deep passion for the work they do, who pay attention to the smallest of details and who take pride in the finished job will ultimately be rewarded.
Such was the case in June for Trevor Warner, a City of Woodstock, Ont. sports field skilled labourer, who was bestowed the honour of Canada’s sports turf manager of the year by Sports Turf Canada.
Honoured only a couple of years ago by Turf & Rec as one of Canada’s “top 10 under 40” among professionals employed in the turf and grounds maintenance industry, he speaks passionately about sports field management – especially when it comes to baseball diamonds.
Once upon a time, the diamond was his second home. Warner was a promising lefthanded pitcher who was offered a partial scholarship to play baseball at a U.S. college. It took a nasty injury to curb his playing ambitions, but the interest and pride he developed while maintaining his college’s home field – one of the team’s mandatory tasks – left a mark that has remained ever since.
I caught up with Trevor days after he was named Canada’s sports turf manager of the year, interviewing him for this issue’s cover story and recording our chat for a soon-to-be uploaded podcast. This wasn’t the first time I’ve heard him
speak about his involvement in sports field management.
In 2017, he conducted an onfield demonstration on the art of properly measuring out a baseball infield during Sports Turf Canada’s Ontario fall field day in Richmond Hill. He had the attention of dozens of municipal parks and recreation employees who were keen to know the finer details of such work.
practical experience of a job like this is almost as big as the educational side of things. Understand that it’s not just a landscape job. You need to have that passion. You’ve got to care.”
The care Warner shows for the fields under his wing didn’t go unnoticed by Sports Turf Canada’s selection committee, and Woodstock has been eyed as a site for the association’s Ontario fall field day once it’s deemed safe to again attend large outdoor gatherings.

Months later, Warner was a panelist at a sports turf workshop put on by Nutrite – again sharing his wealth of knowledge with his colleagues from other municipalities.
At each session, he spoke with passion about the means to achieve perfection, playability and safety in the area of sports field management.
He rightly speaks of what he does as a “career” and not as a “job.” His advice for those seeking employment in the industry is to acquire an internship somewhere and develop a “taste and understanding” of the profession.
“This is not just a job. It’s a career. It’s a passion. That’s how you should approach it.”
Furthermore, he says, “The
COVID-19 forced the Ontario Turfgrass Symposium to deliver its traditional February offering virtually. Warner was tapped as one of the speakers, chronicling the city’s transformation of a soccer field into a multi-purpose playing field, albeit one tailored primarily for football. He took his audience through the stepby-step process necessary to produce a field Woodstock’s minor football athletes found to their liking.
The project was completed largely in-house, saving the municipality a significant amount of money, and was essentially done from scratch. The attention to detail Warner provided was undoubtedly one of the factors that led to his selection as Canada’s sports turf manager of the year.
Aside from our cover story, this issue includes our annual buyers’ guide and directory – a source reference for finding equipment, materials and services from manufacturers, distributors and dealers across Canada. Each sector of the professional turf industry – landscaping, golf and sports turf – is well represented in this guide.

York Lions Stadium at Toronto’s York University is on the cusp of finishing an $8.2-million transformation of its track and field facility into a venue that will accommodate such sports as soccer, football, rugby and field hockey.
The refurbished stadium was expected to reopen at the end of July in time for a Canadian Premier League soccer game between York United FC and Hamilton Forge FC.
Renovations began last August to include what is touted as the highest in quality artificial turf surfaces.
Kildonan Park – Winnipeg’s oldest golf course – is celebrating its 100th birthday this season.
The city’s first municipal course is on pace for 41,000 rounds to be played this year – an increase of about 25 per cent over 2020 figures.
The golf course has reduced its green fees to commemorate the centennial anniversary, to $19.21 until Aug. 6. The 2020 season was seen as Kildonan Park’s best year for golf in 15 years
The City of Mississauga is transitioning to all-electric, battery-powered equipment for its municipal turf maintenance needs. The city has launched its Green Tools pilot project, which introduces the equipment to parks maintenance staff. The switch to electric, battery power is expected to occur over the next few years once current equipment reaches the end of its lifecycle.
The new equipment includes two riding zero-turn mowers, a push mower, leaf blowers and trimmers.

No complaints filed for man’s ‘horticultural disobedience’
A Sherbrooke, Que. man is committing what he calls “horticultural disobedience” by allowing his front yard to grow naturally with wildflowers, clover and long grass. No one has filed a formal complaint, and he has not been cited for violating any local bylaws. Instead, he’s become the subject of several media interviews during which he touts the environmental benefits of naturalized lawns.

been dropped altogether.

Dany Baillargeon’s act of civil disobedience risks violation of local bylaws which require grass and other vegetation to not exceed certain heights.
He subscribes to the messages ecologists are delivering, that natural yards are beneficial to pollinators, require less water and pesticides, and increase biodiversity.
In Sherbrooke, however, it is against the law to allow vegetation to grow to excessive heights. Baillargeon has explained his motives to his neighbours, yet hadn’t received a single complaint as of late July.
According to a conservation biologist with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the fact that Baillargeon’s yard has gone complaint-free is due to a general change in attitude as more people are becoming aware of the benefits of natural spaces.
Such altered attitudes have led to amended bylaws in some municipalities or bylaws that have
Dan Kraus of the Nature Conservancy of Canada said mowing less frequently lowers maintenance costs and reduces the amount of runoff that makes its way into storm drains and waterways.
Baillargeon said he doesn’t oppose anyone who wishes to maintain a traditional lawn, but said those who wish to do things differently should be accepted for their efforts.
Montreal and other Quebec municipalities are converting some of their own green spaces into natural settings, including La Petite-Patrie and Verdun.
The City of Montreal said it plans to educate its residents about why pollinators are important and how the practice can lead to healthy seed and fruit production.
Baillargeon’s lawn has regularly attracted butterflies, bees and birds.
Being able to see such creatures on a regular basis is beneficial to a person’s mental health, he said.
Taking extra strokes is a good way to turn new golfers away from game
By Mike Slack
Have you ever thought about how green speed affects the mental state of a golfer and your revenue stream? I believe green speed is huge factor which can change a golfer’s perspective of your course and your revenue stream.
I have been asked the question many times: “What is a normal greens height or green speed?” as we set up various mowers on golf courses. My obvious answer is always: “Who is playing your course, or what is an average handicap?”
Due to COVID-19, we have seen a major influx in new golfers and never-beforeseen “Sorry, sold out” on tee sheets weeks in advance. The question is, how do we keep them coming back?
One answer is green speed.
I believe that if a green is putting too quickly, the average golfer or new golfer cannot navigate speeds of this calibre, often putting well past the hole and taking extra shots per hole. This can be detrimental to, first, a golfer’s mental strain and, second, promoting slow play which affects more golfers starting their rounds. Let’s say a golfer takes an extra putt every other hole. That’s nine shots per golfer. If you average 200 players a day, that is 1,800

shots which translates into approximately 20 golfers per day! I may be wrong, but I believe it is not unreasonable to say that is 1,500 to 2,000 a day, just because your greens are too fast for your average Joe! Those golfers may also feel the course is unfair, leaving a bad taste, and, with social media today, that can travel very quickly online through course reviews.
Because golf has been known as a stuffy sport for years past, we need to make it “more enjoyable” to come out and play. Some suggestions I have are:
• Offer a free 20-minute golf lesson prior to playing. This may be just enough to help that newbie get off the tee.
• Have a “rock and roll” Thursday where golfers are encouraged to bring their own music and remote speaker to use in their cart. Now that takes the “stuffy” out of golf!
• Mow the rough further into the fescue area to make it feasible to hit a stray
shot and find your ball quicker or get back on track.
• Most owners I know are about the esthetics and challenge of their course and forget that sometimes simpler makes the till ring more often. I like to compare fast greens to a person who is trying baseball for the first time. They step up to bat and Roger Clemons shows up on the mound! More than likely they aren’t coming back!
Maintenance tip of the day
I was fortunate enough to get a tee time this spring to play Copetown Woods Golf Club (amazing course, Pete!). Rather than using a two-tee marker system, they use one coloured stake in the rough beside the tee to mark the tee-off area according to the blocks you are playing. This gives the golfer full range of the tee to place his ball, but more importantly allows the maintenance crew to cut tees and never have to move blocks and re-arrange them. I can’t imagine the time saved, and just as important, the scattering of divots not being so concentrated in one area. Brilliant!!

City of Woodstock, Ont., where he manages the turf and field conditions for more than 40 baseball, soccer and football fields.
Reflecting on his baseball-playing past, he said being able to understand first-hand what goes into proper field maintenance can help turn someone into “one heck” of a groundskeeper. Warner recalled a moment from his second year in college when the team’s starting pitchers asked him if he could “fix” the pitcher’s mound to their liking, telling him the mound maintenance that had been left in the coaches’ hands wasn’t up to par.
That love for sports field maintenance, in spite of his playing days coming to an end, “turned into a heck of a career.”
Before coming to Woodstock, Warner enjoyed other stops along the way – each of which were associated with baseball or sports field management and which provided additional experience and skill sets. From Tennessee, he returned to Canada to work in the short-lived Canadian Baseball League in 2003. He became head groundskeeper for the Niagara Stars at their field in Welland, but the plug was pulled on the eight-team league mere weeks into its inaugural season due to poor attendance and an aborted television deal.
The following year, Warner began work with MarCo Clay Products – a provider of infield mixes, batter’s box and pitcher’s mound materials, and field conditioners – and watched the company grow during his tenure.

Warner said he was caught off guard at being named Canada’s sports turf manager of the year, adding he learned of the selection during Sports Turf Canada’s virtual annual general meeting in June.
“I was surprised and a little bit speechless,” he said.
Warner’s employment with the City of Woodstock began as a seasonal worker, but it evolved into a fulltime position by his second year. He said he has developed a solid relationship with his superiors and praised the municipality for providing him with all the right tools to do the job.
“From a sports field management side of things, having the proper tools is huge. When you can combine good-quality pieces of equipment and the understanding coming from management of why we do what we do on these sports fields, that relationship you can’t beat.”
Warner said if a particular need is warranted, he will fight for it.
“If I can justify and prove it, my bosses have no problem going to bat.”
A stickler for perfection, Warner strives for the “wow factor” when tending to his fields, wanting to deliver the best conditions possible for both the home and visiting teams. At Tip O’Neill Park – the city’s premier baseball field, named for the late 1800s Major League Baseball player Tip (the Woodstock Wonder) O’Neill – the turf is mowed so that its striping “pops” when seen at certain angles.
The park is the city’s only diamond with a grass infield and is sized to big league dimensions.
“This one gets the attention, I believe, that it deserves.”
Woodstock Minor Baseball is the park’s primary user, but out-of-town teams will periodically play there to meet halfway for doubleheaders in a neutral setting. The out-of-town teams come from as far as London and Oakville, and “appreciate and respect” the quality of the field, Warner said.
Tip O’Neill Park was to have been the central site this summer for the Canadian AAA national peewee baseball championships, but the event was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The park had undergone a major irrigation system upgrade in the fall and early spring.
The park is one of more than 20 baseball fields in the city. Among the more than 40 city sports fields, about 15 are lit, irrigated and fenced in, but none is officially considered a Category 1 field, Warner said.
A soccer field located at the city’s Cowan Park complex
was recently given a major overhaul to accommodate football, and could see play on it this fall for the first time since its conversion. It was a project that Warner said he was especially proud of overseeing and one that was largely done in-house, saving the city a significant amount of money.
Two other soccer fields to the west of the new football field are also slated for renovation. Warner said the city was aiming for an Aug. 1 shutdown of the fields, so that they could be ripped up and have the topsoil removed and stockpiled for screening. Efforts will be made to seed the non-irrigated fields in September to ensure they’re ready for play in May or June of 2022.
None of Woodstock’s sports fields bears artificial turf, and that’s the way Warner likes it.
“If you look at the cost of an artificial turf field and took half of that and built a Category 1 football or soccer field and took the other half of the cost and divided that over the lifespan of that field, that money would allow for one heck of a good job for that one field.”
were allowed and which ones were disallowed, and what should or shouldn’t be done. One of the first decisions made was to raise the cutting heights on the city’s fleet of mowers to lengthen mowing intervals.
“The turfgrass doesn’t know that COVID is happening, so you still need to do certain things.”
One thing Warner deemed necessary throughout the pandemic was regular dragging of his fields – at least once a week.
“I don’t care if they’re not playing on them all season. You don’t want to go in to a huge renovation project on 20 infields across the city because we didn’t drag.”
He figured that setting aside 15 or 20 minutes twice a week to groom his fields would keep weeds at bay without the expense of costly inputs.
“That’s the way we had to approach it,” he said, adding such a strategy, along with fewer weekly mowing events, freed up time to tackle other projects.
weeds can be kept at bay for three weeks or a month. Not taking the time needed will result in weeds working “their ugly faces” up time and time again. It’s especially important to set aside time for edging and dragging when fields are being used six or seven days a week and can’t be shut down periodically.
“The scheduling in a normal year is always a tough one because your focus on something is to get it right and get it done, and that to me is the hardest thing.”
Warner said the city has developed good relationships with its field user groups, and he considers none of his fields is overused. The local minor baseball group, for example, has a healthy understanding of the work necessary to keep fields in safe and playable conditions. User groups are “getting it” when covers are placed atop the pitcher’s mound at Tip O’Neill Park and when a synthetic batter’s box covering is laid over the actual diamond box during batting practice. Each measure is designed to retain the right amount of clay moisture needed during game time.
Project2:Layout 1 8/21/14 10:08 AM Page 1
Warner said Woodstock has the proper equipment on hand to maintain such a field, rendering an artificial turf field unnecessary.
“If the money is there and the reasoning behind it is there, they (the city) come through for us and we get what we need to keep these fields proper and safe.”
The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020 raised a number of uncertainties, including what field tasks
Are you prepared for the season?
The pandemic has been beneficial in ways, he acknowledged, noting it has allowed sufficient time to train students to properly paint and chalk lines. Warner said he is fortunate to have staff who can effectively operate contour mowers. Even though Mother Nature can dictate mowing schedules, staff finds the time to mow as necessary.
Infield edging is a practice Warner takes seriously, knowing that it can prevent an ongoing series of “band-aid” fixes. By taking the time to do the job right,
“Anything that helps me out helps them out.”
During the winter months, Warner tends to his equipment to ensure everything is in working order for the spring and removes snow from outside a number of city-owned buildings. Additionally, he attends such education conferences as the Ontario Turfgrass Symposium in Guelph and the Sports Turf Managers Association conference in the U.S.

We have all seen ponds that are surrounded with cattails to the point where you cannot see if there is a pond in the centre, and thought, “How did it get to that point?” You may even have one of those ponds on your course that you inherited in this state and thought, “Nothing I can do to it except start over.”
But is a pond that is mostly filled in and surrounded by plants a lost cause? I would suggest that in all but the worst cases, with some diligence and the right products, ponds can be restored to their former glory. And for those with ponds not that far gone, the road to recovery is even shorter.
To understand how a pond progresses to this state, let us first look at the progression of a pond in nature. Newly formed ponds often begin life as clear rivers that have been blocked in their progress. The water is clean and clear initially, with little plant life or nutrients. They are quickly colonized
by microscopic organisms that set up the most basic of food chains and the foundation for future colonizers.
As the pond matures, larger animals move in and bring with them the seed of plant species. The new pond is still balanced and has little excess nutrients, but this soon changes as more plant life colonizes and grows into larger numbers. Each fall, this plant life dies off and breaks down into organic matter or compost to feed more plants the next year, and so on.
The leaves from surrounding vegetation also contributes to the organic matter that spurs growth, just as it does in land-based systems. Soon, the pond has an abundance of plants and more nutrients than it needs. This leads to algae blooms that create large swings in oxygen that makes life in the pond precarious.
The buildup of organic matter also makes the pond shallower, so that marginal plants can grow further out from the edge and more densely, and the pond – year over year – becomes less pond and more
swamp. The open water is limited to a few areas and the landscape begins to look more like the river that was originally there.
Eventually the pond disappears altogether, and the organic matter that started as pond plants now benefits terrestrial ones.
Very few people plan to have a swamp down the road as they dig their pond, but if we know what maintenance is required on a pond to delay or prevent this natural progression, then the work in years to come is much diminished. But, what if the pond was dug many years back without this knowledge and needs to be restored?
Knowing how the pond progressed to this stage actually helps to find the path back to the pond envisioned when it was first built. The main difference between these stages of pond maturity is the amount of nutrients (or organic matter) that are present in the system. So, by managing this organic mat-

Golf course superintendents have a lot on their plates. They not only meticulously manage what is arguably the largest playing surface in all of sports, but they have a number of people under their wing to coach, an expensive fleet of equipment to maintain, and scores of demanding members to please.
It’s the latter than can sometimes rattle a superintendent and present a challenge to his or her interpersonal skills.
Tim O’Connor, a coach to golf industry professionals, golfers and business people, and a former communications lecturer at the University of Guelph’s turfgrass diploma program, offered some advice in March to superintendents who may face that “hard conversation” with club members. Speaking in a virtual setting at the Canadian Golf Course Management Conference, he said, “Having the ability to have a hard conversa-
tion, to be able to communicate well in all different ways… that is one of the keys to your career in lowering your stress as a superintendent.”
The challenge, he said, is to know how to positively influence what golfers are saying about the superintendent.
“We can’t necessarily control those things, but we can manage them, and we can influence them.”
In recent years, O’Connor has been working with superintendents and club professionals from ClubLink courses on communications skills in dealing with members and staff, with a focus on the ability to listen to people.
He shared a situation that happened last year at a private golf course near Guelph. During a period of extreme heat at the outset of summer, an irrigation pipe had broken which took four days to replace. In the meantime, the inability to provide sufficient water led to the golf course getting “baked.” Greens were saved through hand watering, but tees
and fairways suffered and members were “cheesed.”
O’Connor was already invested in coaching the superintendent and director of operations at the time. A club member O’Connor played with one day during this period complained non-stop about the sub-par conditions of the golf course. By the end of the third hole, O’Connor asked the member to stop, telling him the superintendent was doing the best he could under the circumstances.
In retrospect, O’Connor admitted the way he dealt with the matter wasn’t the best approach.
“What I realized that I had done was that I had taken it personally – what this member said to me – because I was working with the team and I felt badly for them.”
Reacting personally and defensively are considered the “mortal sins” of communications, he said, and the mistake he made was not fully listening to what the member had to say.
“I didn’t hear what he felt, which was some anger and a lot of disappointment. I didn’t hear what he felt and I didn’t hear his words. It was all about me. What I failed to do was establish a relationship with him. I failed to turn an adversary into an ally.”
When talking about communications, it’s really about building relationships, O’Connor said, adding that without establishing relationships, things can go sideways quickly.
He said it’s important for superintendents to step in and have those hard conservations with angry members, even though such dialogue may be awkward and create nervous tension.
“If we don’t have those conversations, resentments build.”
That lack of communication also creates divisions while morale and trust decline.
To be a great communicator, one must first be a good listener. He must also “seek first to understand, and then be understood.”
O’Connor told the story of a high-ranking ClubLink official who was appraised of a number of member complaints concerning course conditions, food quality and tournament operations. The official turned up at the next men’s league night dinner and entertained a question-and-answer session for the concerned members.
“I thought this was amazing on his part. It would have been very easy to set up a meeting with the men’s captain and the
‘If we don’t have those conversations, resentments build’
ladies’ captain and the head pro, and do this privately. But he put himself right in the line of fire.”
The ClubLink official listened to members’ concerns and answered each question to the best of his ability, promising he would get back to anyone whose question he couldn’t immediately answer. He also left the members with his telephone number and email address.
“This was a textbook example of great communications,” O’Connor said.
One of the members’ concerns was the unevenness of several tees. Within a couple of weeks of the meeting with members, work was done to resolve the problem. O’Connor said the members were impressed the ClubLink official had freely given out his contact information.
“It was an amazing thing for me to witness as someone having a hard conversation, not just with one person but about 80.”
The ClubLink executive used clarity, hearing directly from the members instead of sifting through reports or relying on whispers and gossip.
By stepping into the fray and communicating, trust is established, O’Connor said, adding that when there is a misunderstanding and something goes sideways, an emotional charge results, possibly accompanied by anger or frustration.

Productivity has always been the name of the game. Thanks to Brandt’s comprehensive lineup of versatile and reliable equipment, you can always get the machine you need, when you need it. And every unit is backed by the ultimate in operator uptime support, with

“You have to release that charge. If you don’t release the charge, it gets worse and it festers,” and often leads to name-calling and polarity. By having that hard conversation, relationships are built and enhanced.
When things go sideways, there is often the tendency to “turtle” and avoid having the conversation. But not facing the fire is one of the worst things someone can do, O’Connor said.
During the period of extreme heat and drought in June and July of 2020 in southern Ontario, he witnessed a club member at the course he was playing approach the superintendent to discuss the scorched course conditions. The superintendent allowed the member to finish venting, then told him he understood why he felt the way he did.
“He sought first to understand before being understood.”
The superintendent proceeded to tell the member what the club planned to do to remedy the situation, including verticutting fairways to remove thatch, sodding 10 tees, and installing isolation valves to avoid being caught in the event of another irrigation system mishap.

“He turned this man from an adversary into an ally. This member became one of his ambassadors.”

The superintendent was empathetic to the member, listening to his words and his feelings. Next to the upkeep of the golf course, being able to effectively communicate with others is a superintendent’s second-most important skill, O’Connor said.
“The more face time you get with people, the more you develop relationships with them.”
O’Connor encouraged his audience of golf superintendents to turn up occasionally at men’s and women’s outings and at club championships to have an opportunity to communicate with golfers.

Growing profits in the landscaping business comes down to two factors: increasing the number of jobs completed or decreasing operating costs. Ideally, most contractors seek to do both, a feat that requires keen attention to detail, a stellar reputation for high-quality work and a vision to take on some tough, niche applications.
Costly turf damage, inefficient machine utilization and poor productivity on the jobsite are significant barriers to increased profitability and can affect a contractor’s reputation. However, innovative compact track loader designs offer an opportunity to change these challenges into points of differentiation.
Some compact track loaders are redefining expectations of damage to sensitive turf during a landscaping job. Certain innovative design features help landscapers not only save time and money on turf repairs, but be more productive by worrying less about damaging lawns while on the job.
Some innovative track loaders include features that reduce the risk of damage and lead to several benefits, ranging from earlier access to a jobsite to reduced time and labour, protecting or repairing turf. These designs often incorporate a higher number of undercarriage track wheels, spreading the unit’s weight more evenly to reduce ground pressure to unpreced-

ented levels. In maximizing the amount of track surface area on the ground through wider tracks, these track loaders improve flotation on mud and minimize damage to lawns and other sensitive areas. Completely smooth turf tracks are also available that further reduce ground pressures and lower the risk of damage.
One Iowa landscaper’s investment in a cutting-edge compact track loader reduced his time repairing turf damage by 50 per cent, compared to his alternative same-class loader. In some situations where the job required working on a muddy yard, the contractor found that although the yard wasn’t suitable to walk on yet, his low-ground-pressure track loader smoothly rolled out new sod without getting stuck.
A turf-conscious track loader also allows a contractor to take on new applications with sensitive turf, such as work on golf courses. Plus, a contractor who earns
a reputation for causing minimal turf disturbance will likely enjoy a better reputation and more return customers.
There are only so many hours in the day, and the equipment that helps contractors get the most work done will have the greatest positive effect on a business’ profitability.
Some track loaders leverage innovative undercarriage designs to achieve ground speeds comparable to those of skid steers. They achieve this in part with advanced internal positive drive undercarriage designs that reduce friction and allow more power to transfer from the drive system to the tracks. Repeat trips, such as loading trucks or hauling material from one end of a jobsite to another, completed minutes or even seconds faster, can add up to a significant increase in efficiency over the course of a job.
Those fast ground speeds only help if the machine’s suspension – and therefore the operator – can handle it. Even at slower speeds, compact track loaders with traditional, rigid-mounted undercarriage designs will feel the effect of every bump.
Some track loader designs reduce the impact of bumps on the operator and the attachment with suspension systems that are fully suspended and feature dual torsion axles. These axles allow the suspension to travel up and down when encountering bumps, offering a smoother ride for the operator and less loss of material from the bucket.
Visibility from the cab is an important factor in productivity as well as overall operator experience. Some compact track loader manufacturers have improved the visibility in their designs. Some newer models provide premium 360-degree visibility from the seat of the cab, resulting from all-clear sides and a frameless door with floor-to-ceiling glass area.
A better view of the attachment, and the operator’s surroundings in general, allows the operator to carry out tasks more quickly. There’s less need to lean for a better view of the attachment or to see around the door frame.

Innovative compact track loaders can handle more applications than ever before, thanks to certain design features – a fact that pays dividends for landscape contractors in the form of improved equipment utilization.
Snow removal services, as a prime example, can account for up to 33 per cent or more of a landscape contractor’s total revenue, so it’s an enormous advantage if equipment can handle the elements in summer and winter. While historically many contractors have viewed skid steers as better choices for snow removal work, things are changing.
Well-designed CTLs can increase traction and flotation in applications yearround with no need to change tracks with the seasons. Some of these loaders feature tracks with a bar-style tread that maximize ground contact, a more versatile option than investing in separate winter tracks with aggressive tread patterns. Machine undercarriages with a large number of ground contact points and long, wide tracks pair with a suspension system that allows the track to flex and maximize ground contact.
A balanced compact track loader with a light footprint can pile snow higher than previously possible with a CTL, improving

overall efficiency. While many manufacturers simply convert a skid steer chassis to accept tracks, some track loaders are purposely built for optimal balance and design. Skid-steer-converted track loaders often feature a balance of 30 per cent/70 per cent, with the back end being the heaviest, whereas purpose-built designs are closer to 50 per cent/50 per cent.
One landscape contractor saw measurable results from using compact track loaders with a light footprint in snow clearing, noticing a 25 per cent increase in completed work in the same amount of time with his new machine versus his similarly-sized previous model. Many landscapers familiar with trying to operate traditional CTLs have a hard time picturing achieving this type of winter performance from the cab of a compact track loader, but as this landscape contractor proved, some track loader designs are pulling it off.
Some purpose-built CTLs are designed to navigate deep snow and feature ground clearances as high as 15 inches, nearly double that of designs with retrofitted undercarriages. Reducing your costs into every job and improving your crew’s productivity – these are benefits any landscape business owner can get behind. Model was first introduced in 1945
By Mario Cywinski
Having been an “automotive journalist” for nearly 15 years, and working for an OEM dealership before that, I have had the opportunity to drive a lot of different vehicles, from the smallest, a Smart Fortwo, to the largest, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter long wheelbase with a high roof. None has been as unique as the vehicle that recently filled up my driveway.
First introduced in 1945, the Dodge (now Ram) Power Wagon was the first mass-produced civilian 4x4 truck. The original was the model WDX in 1946, and while its model names changed over time, it was always a one-ton until the original was put out to pasture in 1968.
According to Stellantis: “The Power Wagon was similar in design to the threequarter-ton weapons carrier, with a 126inch wheelbase, closed cab similar to the Dodge VC series trucks, and the front shell and grille similar to the T234 three-quarterton built by Dodge for the Chinese Army, also known as the Burma Road truck.”
After 1968, the Power Wagon did not appear again until 2004, when it was introduced as a 2005 model. It was redesigned for the 2010 MY, dropping the Dodge name, and has been a staple in the lineup since its re-introduction.
Much has changed since the original Power Wagon and the current model (the model tested was a 2020), with 2021 being the 75th anniversary of the original. The current model has a 6.4-litre V-8 HEMI
engine, compared with a 230-cubic-inch flathead-six in the original. An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated to the V-8, while a four-speed transmission was used with the original’s four. One more comparison: the original Power Wagon had a maximum payload of 3,000 pounds, while the current model has a payload of around 4,000 pounds.
The V-8 used in the Power Wagon offers 410 horsepower and 429 foot-pounds of torque. The diesel option that is available on other 2500 level models is not available with the Power Wagon. However, as this is an off-road first truck, the HEMI is more than enough.
“The 2021 Ram Power Wagon is the most capable production off-road truck in the industry,” Mike Koval Jr., head of Ram Brand, said. “There are few vehicles with as long and as rich a history as the Power Wagon and, combined with our new Ram 1500 TRX, the launch of the 75th Anniversary Edition reinforces Ram Truck’s position as the off-road truck leader.”
The 75th anniversary model will feature a unique grille, exterior and interior badging, rock-rails with side-step capability, 17-inch bead-lock-capable wheels with 33-inch tires, leather interior, and other unique accents.
Power Wagon is lifted (over a standard HD), has a unique suspension with Bilstein monotube shocks, locking front and rear differentials, electronic disconnecting front stabilizer bar, WARN front electric 12,000-pounds, tow hooks, and fuel tank and transfer case skid plate shields. Its 360-degree camera includes forward-view with guidelines to help when off-roading.
Ram has been known as having some of the best interiors in the business for its trucks, and the Power Wagon is no excep-

tion. It uses a Uconnect 4 system with 8.4inch display along with a seven-inch instrument cluster with a unique theme (with an optional 12-inch display), has dual-zone climate control, power sliding rear window, as well as having off-road pages that show ride height, transfer case position, pitch, roll, and accessory gauges.
This is the type of truck that makes others move out of your way. There is nothing small or subtle about it. From the huge front grille, to the semi-looking yellow lights on the roof, to the winch, to the power wagon decal on the side and tailgate, it screams “look at me.”
One thing that Stellantis, namely Ram, Dodge, and Jeep, do well is highlighting its heritage, much like the Jeep Wrangler (and all its many previous names), the Power Wagon is not a truck that has just come along lately. Sure, it looks ultra-modern, but under the skin is 75 years of off-road truck heritage.

No matter if it’s spring, summer or fall, trying to maintain and grow a lush lawn, landscape or golf green can require skill, patience and some help from pesticides and fertilizers. Although they can be a regular part of landscaping and groundskeeping, pesticides and fertilizers can still pose many hazards to workers if the appropriate controls are not implemented.
Exposure to pesticides and fertilizers can cause health issues from minor skin irritations to serious injuries and diseases, and even death. These products can harm workers by entering the body through skin contact (e.g. handling or applying without gloves or protective clothing), inhalation (e.g. breathing in spray during application), or ingestion (e.g. not washing hands or face thoroughly before eating, drinking, or smoking).
Because handling and applying these chemicals can be such a common task for certain workers, it’s incredibly important that each and every worker knows the hazards of their job duties, the risks of working with pest control products, and the control measures to work safely.
Did you know that workers may be exposed to pest control products without even realizing it? Workers, who may not have worked directly with pesticides, may unknowingly be exposed if they’re working downwind or in the same area that pesticides are mixed. They can also be exposed if re-entry procedures, which outline the minimum amount of time that must pass between pesticide application and the time
when people can go into the area without protective gear or clothing, have not been established or communicated.
Using pesticides may also affect reproductive health, so all workers who are or may become pregnant need to know about the risks of exposure. Some pesticides may also pass into breast milk. Any nursing or pregnant workers should check with their doctor to understand what it means for their health, and that of their family, too
The likelihood of becoming ill from exposure to pesticides depends on a number of factors, including the type and amount of material being used, the concentration and length of exposure, and how it entered the body. Employers are legally required to provide workers with the knowledge and training they need to work safely, including how to identify and control potential hazards in the workplace.
Occupational health and safety training should use clear language that is suitable for the worker’s age, ability, reading level, and language preferences. Workplaces can also use visual aids to support training, if needed.
Training must include education on the health effects, safe use, and storage of pest control products. All labels must be clear, legible, and available in both French and English. Workers should be able to answer the following questions:
1. What are the hazards of the product?
2. How can you protect yourself?
3. What should you do in the event of an emergency (such as a spill)?
4. Where can you get more information?
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) promotes the total well being of workers in Canada by providing information, training, education, systems and solutions that support health and safety programs and injury and illness prevention. www.ccohs.ca

Knowledge is power. Workers should be aware of the potential risks and health effects of prolonged or over-exposure, including any acute effects, which occur shortly after exposure, like skin or lung irritation, and long-term effects, like cancer. General symptoms of pesticide and fertilizer exposure can range in severity, and workers should know what to look for: irritation of the nose, throat, eyes or skin; headache; dizziness; vomiting; excessive salivation; coughing; feeling of constriction in the throat and chest; the inability to breathe or rapid breathing; and chemical burns.
Workers also need to be trained on what to do if they suspect that they or a co-worker have been exposed. This training should include contacting a supervisor or manager to report the incident, and seeking medical attention, such as calling the local poison control centre, or going to the hospital in the event of a medical emergency.
Employers must implement controls to protect workers. Perform workplace assessments to identify opportunities to minimize exposure to pesticides and fertilizers. Then, put the appropriate work practices into place, such as substituting a pesticide for a less hazardous product.
