Hobo Cannabis Company makes a splashy impression
In April 2020, Vaughan, Ont.-based Creative Silhouettes completed a project that saw it print and install graphics in 10 new Hobo Cannabis Company stores in just seven days. In order to ensure consistent results across a range of environments, the company used Drytac Polar Grip across the whole campaign.
Creative Silhouettes specializes in wall graphics and decals, with 70 per cent of its business in large self-adhesive vinyl for offices and retail stores. The company notes that 80 per cent of this work is installed by the team.
Hobo Cannabis Company was opening 10 new stores in the Greater Toronto
Area as part of a 30-branch Canadian expansion. As each retail space was different, Creative Silhouettes required a vinyl product to meet every demand.
“Our deal with Hobo was to wrap 10 entire stores regardless of the surface of the walls - and every one had different surfaces, such as brick, stucco, painted wood and rusted metal,” said Giovani Pereira, project manager and business development at Creative Silhouettes.
“ND Graphics is our primary supplier of vinyl and equipment so we went to our contact Dwayne Burton for advice. He recommended Drytac Polar Grip and we undertook several print and install tests on all rough surfaces, including floor,

and they all worked well.”
Creative Silhouettes used its HP Latex R1000 to print the black-and-white wall graphics with photographic details.
Drytac Polar Grip is an 80 micron (3.2mm) white polymeric self-adhesive PVC vinyl designed for interior and exterior wall graphics, offering durability of up to five years. Its high-bond adhesive is compatible with a wide range of surfaces including metal, plastic, wood, glass and brick and has been rated for fire safety to meet the requirements of public spaces. It works with latex, UV, solvent and eco-solvent printing technologies and is available in white and gloss finishes.

B.C. team wins regional title in 2019 Wrap Like a King Challenge
Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions’ annual Wrap Like a King Challenge names 10 vehicle graphics installer teams as Regional Wrap Kings. B.C.’s Sapphire Creative was named the Regional Wrap King for Canada for Spiderghini, a full vehicle wrap on a Lamborghini Aventador installed by Sapphire Creative’s Jeremie Webber, Peter Den Uyl and Dave Benedict.
To be named a winner, projects must have used Avery Dennison vehicle wrap products, such as Supreme Wrapping Film or MPI 1105, to wrap a four-wheel passenger vehicle.
Spiderghini took the team one week to design, and one week to install. The intent of the project, according to the company’s entry form, was to emulate Spider-Man’s Iron Spider suit design from the movie Avengers: Endgame, because the team describes itself as “huge Spider-Man fans”.
The base colour of the car was white at the start of the project. The hood and roof were embossed in order to register the webbing and logos with the printer layer. The classic Spider-Man logo was also embossed on the back of the car. Sapphire Creative used Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film in Gloss White to emboss, and Supreme Wrapping Film in Diamond White for the digital print layout, along with DOL1360Z clear, high gloss laminate.
“We wanted to build a design that was both relevant for today as well as easily
recognizable,” explains Jeremie Webber, president of Sapphire Creative and member of the project team. “Having the design stand out by standing close to the car as well as having it stand out from a distance was one of our main goals. To do this, we had to make sure our general layout design was simple enough with a strong contrast of colours so that visually you could see and understand the artwork from 10 to 20 feet away from the car but also have some serious wow factor when you got up close and personal.”
In order to achieve this, the team printed the graphics on the Avery Diamond SW900 series so the prints would have a heavy metallic finish. In order to give the wrap some depth, the team laid down a cut vinyl layer of the webbing on the car prior to placing the wrap, so when the car was wrapped, the webbing would have an embossed look and feel.
According to Webber, the major difficulty in the design of the project (in addition to actually building it) was taking a design concept that had been custom designed for the human body, and redesigning it to fit a Lamborghini.
“[We had] questions like ‘how do we made a design like this compliment the body shape of the car itself? How thick should the webbing be? How should the webbing curve around the body of the car? Where to place the iconic logos?’ This process took our designers multiple revisions
and edits to get the layout exactly how we wanted it before print production was started,” notes Webber. “[We had] multiple revisions to make sure the webbing curved around the body lines of the car just the way we wanted, and making sure the SpiderMan symbols worked with the body of the car.”
Despite any challenges involved in the design, Sapphire Creative is grateful for both the experience and the exposure of the contest.
“Winning the Wrap Like a King contest for Canada helps set us apart as a company. It is not an award that is easy to win and each year the entries are getting better and more creative from every company that enters,” says Webber. “It shows our potential clients that they can trust our work and that our staff is more than capable to handle any of their wrap needs.”

A look at the global wide-format market
TMR Research indicates an uptick in UV-curable
inks
Wide-format printers offer a number of printing applications, including a variety of large-sized prints and constructional designs, that can efficiently produce high quality images. Wide-format printers support the printing of large roll widths, typically in the range of 18 to 100
inches. They are used to print banners, posters, signage, textiles, wall coverings, vehicle graphics, point-of-sale displays and other constructional designs.
According to a recent study from TMR Research, UV-curable inks have gained traction in the wide-format printer market in recent years, replacing solvent-based
inks. The use of UV-curable inks in wideformat printing provides improved quality, enhanced productivity, and results in savings in both time and costs. In addition, UV-curable inks are more environmentally-friendly than their solvent-based counterparts.
In addition, wide-format printers that
use UV-curable inks are believed to emit lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to those that use solvent inks.
The global wide-format printing market is expected to see substantial demand from industries such as media and advertising, retail, entertainment, healthcare, hospital-
ity and education, notes TMR Research.
Driving growth
Rising demand for short-run print jobs across various sectors and the increased adoption of UV-curable inks for a number of applications are expected to drive growth in the wide-format printer market,
notes TMR Research.
Developments in eco-solvent inks and rapidly climbing demand for 3D printing in various industries are critical to boosting market share. In addition, recent technological advancements in ink-level monitoring software and the integration of traditional printing with digital media communication are leading to increased demand for wide-format printers, notes TMR’s study.
Paired with this, the declining prices of wide-format printers are expected to drive growth of the global large-format printer market. TMR notes that some vendors prefer eco-solvent inks over other solvents for vehicle wraps, outdoor signage and point-of-sale displays, which has helped push demand for wide-format printers.
TMR notes that digital media used for advertising and promotional purposes is likely to impede the global growth of wideformat printers to some extent, however a large number of traditional printing businesses are turning to wide-format to reduce turnaround time, tackle short-run jobs and enhance image quality, among other reasons. TMR says the emerging trend has created abundant growth opportunities for those in the wide-format market.
Geographic outlook
According to TMR Research, a significant share of the global wide-format market lies with European printers, however Asia Pacific is fast emerging as a prominent market. Growth in this region is driven by the demand for UV-curable inks and latex wide-format printers, notes TMR. In addition, technological advances, including the adoption of 3D technology, is expected to fuel market growth in emerging countries such as South Korea, Japan and China.
Competitive landscape
Manufacturers are making significant investments in research and development, and launching customized printers that can meet a variety of demands from end users. Industry players that are looking to capture a larger share in the wide-format market include Canon, Inc., HewlettPackard, Mimaki Engineering Co., Ltd., Epson, Konica Minolta, Agfa Graphics, Mutoh and Kyocera.
