Welcome to the Glass Canada Buyers Guide for 2011. Whether you’re looking for someone to provide tools, products, machinery or software, you’ll find them here.
In creating this Buyers Guide, our overriding goal was to make sure that every segment of our readership was served. Whether you’re an architect, a glazing contractor, a window manufacturer, a designer or a fabricator, the 2011 edition of the Glass Canada Buyers Guide can help you find what you need, when you need it. It’s information right at your fingertips, whether you’re in the office, in the shop, or at a job site.
Finding out who offers the products and tools you need is a snap. Say you’re looking for gas filling machinery. Simply turn to the “Equipment & Machinery” listings and run your finger down the list until you get to the subcategory for gas filling. You’ll find a comprehensive list of companies involved in gas filling machinery sales and service. Then you can look them up in the “Industry Suppliers” section to find out more about each individual company.
You can also access an online version through www.glasscanadamag.com. All entries are clearly categorized and marked, making it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for.
NEXT ISSUE
• Hot Glass
• Curtain walls
• Cold Glass
Each entry in the “Industry Suppliers” section offers complete contact information, including address, telephone and fax numbers, and company website. Very often there’s a contact name as well, so you’re not stuck on your end of the phone saying, “I want to speak to someone who deals with…”
• Shower and bath enclosures
• Best Business Practices NEXT ISSUE
I think that alone makes this a great resource for the glass professional. However, the Buyers Guide can do a lot more for you than simply help you find the suppliers you need quickly and easily. There’s also a comprehensive listing of professional associations for every aspect of the Canadian glass industry. If you’re a member of one of these associations, then you already know how valuable they can be. If you’re not, it might be time to reconsider.
Two of our feature articles in this issue focus on association-related events. First up, we have our comprehensive coverage of Win-Door 2010. This is a great event to see what’s new in the world of windows, and it’s largely because the influence of the Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association (CWDMA) is as expansive as it is.
The other big association event is our review (and preview) of Glass Connections, the inaugural event for the Canadian Glass Association (CGA). Our coverage of this event is good, but there’s nothing that can compare with actually being there. Luckily, that’s something you still have a chance to do. The CGA has announced that it will hold another Glass Connections event in May 2011. This time the venue will be the Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto. You can find more information on this upcoming event on page 7 of this issue, and online at www.canadianglassassociation.com. •

Accordingto a study conducted by the Heschong Mahone Group (HMG), the use of the National Fenestration Rating Council’s (NFRC) Component Modeling Approach (CMA) provided a maximum increase of 11.7 per cent in energy compliance margins compared to default fenestration rating values.
The NFRC’s director of new business programs, John Lewis, says that although this study was confined to California, it strongly implies that similar results can be achieved elsewhere.
“This study definitively shows that implementing CMA can improve accuracy and help provide access to above-code incentive programs,” Lewis said. “These kinds of benefits are something industry professionals are likely to find attractive.”
The 11.7 per cent additional compliance margin was obtained by modelling an office building with 20.8 per cent window-to-floor area ratio. Additional compliance margins were found to be generally associated with buildings using more fenestration. For example, the model of a retail store building with only one per cent windowto-floor ratio showed no additional improvement.
Interested parties can learn more about CMA and the CMA Simulation Study on the NFRC website at www.nfrc.org. You may also contact John Lewis directly at jlewis@nfrc.org.

The Canadian Glass Association (CGA) has announced that its educational and networking event, Glass Connections, will come to Toronto, Ont., on May 3, 2011. The first Glass Connections event took place Sept. 30, 2010, at the Delta Burnaby Hotel & Conference Centre in Vancouver, B.C. For the full story on the Vancouver event, please see page 12 of this issue.
Glass Connections Toronto 2011 will be a one-day session that will present the latest technologies for the glass and metal industry used to improve the productivity of glazing building envelopes. The event is for glaziers, architects, engineers, designers, spec writers, commercial
construction contractors and building owners.
Seminars will cover a wide range of industry specific topics, including photovoltaic technology for the glass industry, heat treatment of glass, insulating glass and manufacturing, training and retaining young glazing apprentices, and building code energy efficiencies.
A number of presenters have already been confirmed. Christopher Barry, director of technical services for Pilkington NA, will present on “Raise Your Window Performance to Meet Tomorrow’s New Levels.” Minimum performance levels in both building codes and consumer expectations have been rising in recent years. Barry’s presentations will showcase a number of ways to help thermal performance and solar control meet those levels.
John Carpenter, president of Clearstream International
Products and Schott Okalux Architectural Glass will inform CGA members on up-to-date glazing techniques that capture and manage solar energy in his presentation, entitled “Harvesting Sunlight – Using Photovoltaics & Advanced Thermal Glazing Units to meet new Federal, Provincial & Municipal GREEN sustainable designs.”
Margaret Webb, executive director of the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) and a regular contributor to Glass Canada will speak on “Durability of Insulating Glass Units.” The double-pane insulating glass unit was first patented by Thomas Stetson in 1865, but it wasn’t commercially available until the 1930s. Issues with seal durability arose then, and the introduction of argon gas fill in the 1980s added another layer of complexity. Webb will discuss current state-of-the-art IGMA seal durability programs.
In addition, the conference will host a Table Top Trade Show to give manufacturers and suppliers the opportunity to showcase their products, services and upcoming technologies. Sponsorship packages are also available.

North America’s biggest dedicated fenestration event, Win-Door 2010, officially got underway on Nov. 16 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The show ran from Nov. 16 to 18.
Although the show floor didn’t open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, there was still plenty to occupy fenestration professionals, starting with the Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association (CWDMA) fall meeting.
Wednesday got underway with a presentation by Jeff Baker, technical consultant for the CWDMA. Baker delivered updates on new code requirements, NAFS testing regulations for doors, and upcoming changes in the building code and NAFS.
Bob Langdon, CPA and author of Managing Your Business for Profit, gave two presentations on Wednesday: “Strategic Planning for Your Business” and “Maximizing Profitability in a Recovering Economy.”
Langdon’s second presentation of the day focused primarily on the importance of forecasting.

“If you want to be more profitable this year than you were last year, do a forecast,” said Langdon. “You will always be more profitable with a plan than without one. I guarantee that you will make 30 to 40 per cent more profit next year if you do a forecast.”
Wednesday also saw the presentation of several CWDMA awards. Jim Parker Booth Awards
First Prize – Edgetech IG
Second Prize – Trimlite
Small Booth Award – Apricot Coating Systems
Retiring Directors
Scott Targett – Global Windows and Doors
Martin Tremblay – Servitek Fenestration Inc.
CP Loewen Award
Clare Knechtel – KML Millwork
In addition to everything attendees have come to expect from Win-Door, the show has added a new feature this year. The

Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) ran the IGMA Technical Resource Centre, which served as a central place to ask the experts about anything and everything related to insulating glass.
The resource centre also featured more than 100 technical and information seminars over the course of WinDoor 2010. The seminars covered a wide range of topics, including design and fabrication, gas filling, thermal stress, high-performance glass, forensic investigative techniques, certification, components, energy performance and new technologies.
Experts such as Bill Lingnell, IGMA’s technical consultant, were available to answer any and all questions regarding insulating glass, such as “Can IGs be repaired in the field?” and “What factors in window design contribute to early IG failure?”
Another popular feature of Win-Door was the New Product Showcase. It serves as a dual online and in-person introduction to numerous new products being exhibited at Win-Door. The online portion is still available for viewing at www. windoorshow.com/new-products.cfm.
Win-Door continued on Thursday, beginning with “The Power Hour – An Economic Preview of the Year Ahead.”
The forecast was delivered by Peter Norman, a well-known urban economist and forecaster. Norman is the general manager of Altus Group Economic Con -

sulting, and he specializes in economic and demographic analysis, construction economics, building products, technology studies, and forecasting services.
The pace of housing starts is expected to moderate further in the fourth quarter of 2010. The expectation is that this will remain relatively flat throughout 2011. According to the forecast, we can expect a slide from 2010 numbers (188,00 total housing starts) in 2011 (172,000 total housing starts projected). However, this still compares favourably with numbers from 2009 (149,081 total housing starts).
Other presentations included “Energy Star – Phase 2 Changes & More,” presented by Steve Hopwood, account manager, fenestration products, for Natural Resources Canada, and “CSA Standards – The New F.I.T. Program” presented by Miles Murphy, product manager, personnel certification, for the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
Hopwood’s presentation on Energy Star focused on the finalized qualifications

and labelling procedures for Phase 2 of the Energy Star program. Naturally, the main topic of conversation was the new standards for windows, doors, and skylights.
Hopwood outlined a number of significant items relating to the Energy Star program, specifically as they relate to fenestration professionals.
Criteria levels for each of the four zones have been made more stringent. There are also new minimum ER requirements for U-factor path of compliance, in regards to windows.
A number of items are now mandatory, including physical performance testing for windows, sliding glass doors and skylights, insulating glass durability certification for all products, and labelling for all products.
All Energy Star qualified windows, doors and skylights must now be labelled with the Energy Star label, the temporary and permanent labels of the agency that certified the performance

values, and any label or mark required by the agency that certified the durability of the insulating glass unit.
Hopwood also stressed that there a number of things fenestration professionals must remember when labelling. Among other things, these include labelling with zones according to the October 1st specification, include an NRCan Reference Number, Model Code or NFRC Certification Number, and always show the correct zone of qualification. Hopwood also stressed that it was important for window manufacturers to make sure they read the available guidelines.
The new F.I.T. program, developed by the CSA in conjunction with the CWDMA, is designed to define the relevant knowledge, skills and abilities of a fenestration technician, while at the same time testing to make sure those skills are up to scratch.
Win-Door would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous contributions that helped to make Win-Door 2010 a success:
• Livingston International – EMS
• Novatech Group Inc. – Parking
• Richersons Enterprise Limited – Parking
• Royal Group/Thermoplast – Lunches/ beer cups
• Truth Hardware – Badge lanyards/ pillar wraps/EMS
• Trimlite – Registration desk
Win-Door 2011 will take place Nov. 15-17, 2011, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. •

Conserving energy, while reducing greenhouse gases, is possible in commercial buildings when manufacturers of fenestration products use the Azon thermal barrier method for aluminum windows and Warm-Light® warm-edge spacer for insulating glass.
Modern daylighting systems produced with both Azon structural thermal barrier technologies will yield a fenestration system capable of upholding the highest efficiency and sustainability standards.

Delegates from across Canada and the United States in Vancouver, and left with tangible benefits
by RiCH PORAyKO
he content of the Canadian Glass Association’s (CGA) inaugural Glass Connections 2010 conference and trade show was so informative it challenged many seasoned glass professionals in attendance to question what they thought they knew about architectural glass.
CGA Technical Committee member Leonard Pianalto of Read Jones Christoffersen Consulting Engineers chaired the event, which took place at the Grand Villa Hotel & Casino in Metro Vancouver, B.C., on Sept. 30, 2010. CGA president Richard Verdon of RSVP Agency Inc. opened the proceedings and welcomed the 100 delegates by thanking the crowd for its support and participation.
“We have endeavoured to make this a cost-effective and highly focused one-day conference that combines several elements traditionally found on longer programs,” said Verdon. “It is a valuable educational forum designed to maximize your investment in time.”
Glass Connections is a national conference developed by the CGA and it will be rolled out to other regions in the coming years. The next event will be held in May 2011 in Toronto.
“Glass Connections 2010 is more than just an industry event,” said Canadian Glass Association executive director Zana Gordon. “It represents a promise that we made at the beginning of the year to reach out to glass professionals across the country, solidify our status as a national association for glaziers, and provide tangible resources to help the industry.”
The CGA Technical Committee is chaired by Leonard Pianalto and includes Steve Gusterson of Alumicor, Brent Harder of Ferguson Glass and Daniel Morin. “The CGA Technical Committee did an amazing job in selecting interesting topics and wellrespected speakers,” said Gordon.
“The CGA board would like to acknowledge the support of our sponsors, Dow

Glass Connections was a very important event for the CGA, drawing together many board members from across the country.

Corning, DSG Custom Glass, Finishing Trades Institute of BC, Alumicor, Garibaldi Glass and Ray-Bar Engineering. The board would also like to thank RBC for their sponsorship and their door prize contribution.”
Gordon continued, “The Canadian Glass Association worked very hard to ensure the first conference was a model to build on to provide the host province with relevant topical discussion to attract attendees while providing value to sponsors and exhibitors.”
Christopher Barry, director of technical services for Pilkington NSG, provided a fascinating presentation entitled “Raise Your Window Performance to Meet Tomorrow’s New Levels,” which focused on glass clarity, colour, reflection, thermal insulation, solar control and passive solar gain.
“Glass is always changing,” said Barry. “There are one billion ways to fill a hole in the wall with a glass product; however, there is only one best way. How do you know which one is best? And when you order it how do you know you’ve received it if the coating is invisible?
“If you want clarity, get a low iron glass. We don’t see glass. We only see what is transmitted through the glass plus what is reflected by the glass. When you are looking through 5 to 20 millimetres of glass you aren’t going to see much colour. If you screenprint white ceramic frit behind 19-millimetre glass, sunlight is going to pass through the glass, pick up a tiny bit of colour, reflect off the white ceramic frit and back through the 19
millimetres, so we are really looking through 38 millimetres of colour. That’s when it is really important not to mix and match suppliers. If you want to get rid of the glass colour altogether, screenprint it solid black, which removes all reflection.”
Optical illusions occur for a reason. It’s not your eye playing tricks on you, it’s your brain, and Barry displayed several vivid examples demonstrating just that. “Colour differences can appear greater or smaller depending on the surrounding colours,” said Barry.
Lesson learned? You must examine glass in the lighting and installation in which it will be seen. “If you put a piece of glass on a white piece of paper under fluorescent lights it will show you exactly what a piece of glass on white paper under fluorescent lights looks like,” said Barry.
Other key takeaways from Christopher Barry’s presentation:
• Krypton is a better performing gas than argon, although it is much more expensive.
• Every window should be double glazed with low-e. A high-performance coating always makes an IG better. “Two equal three when you use low-e.” (A standard doubleglazed unit with one low-e coating on the third surface is as effective as a triple-glazed unit with no low-e.)
• If an IG manufacturer can’t make a unit that will seal argon, then they shouldn’t be making sealed units.
• IG manufacturers should always print their names on their spacer bar for traceability. Glazing contractors should

avoid suppliers that don’t permanently identify their product.
• PVB lamination may stop 99.9 per cent of UV; however, it only stops 67 per cent of fading.
• In Canada, heating is more expensive than cooling, so it is important to use a low-e with a high Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).
• If two low-e coatings are going to be used in a single IG unit, the second coating should be a hard coat on the fourth surface. Sealed units should not have low-e on both the second and third surfaces of the same unit.
John Carpenter, president of Clearstream International Products, a representative of Schott Architectural and Schott Solar in eastern Canada, presented an intriguing session on “Harvesting Sunlight.”
of their business are always searching for something better and unique in design and application,” Carpenter told his audience. Carpenter’s presentation focused on current glazing techniques that are being used to capture and manage solar energy. From Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) to diffusing light, Carpenter emphasized the opportunity to harvest the sun, not fight it.
“Daylighting is extremely beneficial to building occupants in increasing comfort, reducing absenteeism and increasing productivity,” said Carpenter. “Operating costs are lower and the building is worth more. When you bring daylight in it has a profound effect on the people within. In Europe, they have been aware of this for years. Germany has mandated that workers must be within a certain number of metres of a source of natural light.”
Christopher Barry, director of technical services for Pilkington NSG, presented on “Raise Your Window Performance to Meet Tomorrow’s New Levels.”
Other new developments from Schott included switchable glass, bird-friendly windows and digitized glazing, which is the precise image transfer over large glass surfaces without silk screening.
Would you hire an HR person to do your accounting? Probably not. Cori Maedel, CEO of Jouta Performance Group, presented on the “High Cost of Losing People: How to Recruit and Retain Top Talent.” Maedel believes that companies need to hire based on fit to the culture first and then skill. “It is imperative that company owners drive the culture and make sure it is understood and adopted by HR,” said Maedel.
“People want to know more about the company they are with. If they have the big picture view, they are way more vested and feel like they are part of the company. They feel empowered.”
Christopher Barry filled in for Margaret Webb on behalf of the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) and provided the findings of the IGMA 25 Year Correlation Study, which monitored 2,400 IG units representing 140 buildings in 14 cities.
“The architectural industry is full of open-minded adrenalin-charged people who by their own nature and the nature

In order to effectively capture daylight, it is necessary to diffuse the light, eliminate glare and control solar heat gain.

At one time, the only criteria used for defining a failed unit were if the IG unit was fogging or if the spacer bar was travelling. According to IGMA, an IG failure is now defined as a unit with fogging, damaged coating, displaced spacer, loss of adhesion or any other impairment such as containments or argon loss.
“Driving around I see glass units that

are concave or convex, which means that the seal is good,“ said Barry. “A flat unit means the seal has failed.“
In general, the main factors that contributed to IG failures in the study included inadequate design for thermal stress leading to cracked glass and improper glazing. Proper glazing is critical to long-term performance.
“There is no reason today that a properly designed, properly made and properly installed unit, and all three of those factors are critical, should not have a life span in excess of 25 years,“ said Barry. “If the life span is not in excess of 25 years, someone somewhere is doing something wrong.”
The mantra of IGMA: Say what you do, do what you say and be able to prove it.
Andrew Pape-Salmon, director of the Energy Efficiency Branch of the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, provided what turned out to be a very interactive presentation. The session outlined government, utility and private sector standards and measures to improve energy efficiency for new and existing buildings in British Columbia, including information about product
requirements under the B.C. Energy Efficiency Act.
In addition, Pape-Salmon addressed the B.C. Building Code, which requires compliance with the ASHRAE 90.1 (2004) standard for new highrise and large building construction. The presentation highlighted the efforts made to harmonize equipment regulations (Energy Efficiency Act) with building code requirements (ASHRAE 90.1).
Pape-Salmon also summarized the typical technical characteristics of products that are compliant with the regulated standards in British Columbia.
“Effective Jan. 1, 2010, British Columbia became a low-e jurisdiction. Basically, every glazing product sold in B.C. must be low-e due to regulations for new and existing buildings, including highrise, lowrise, door lites, etc.”
The program is a way of showing industry and consumers which products have proven that they are energy efficient. “Energy Star is pretty simple. It is either Energy Star or it is not. You don’t have to get involved with U-values, which is good, because many people think that like R-value for insulation, the

bigger the U-value, the better. Energy Star provides a mechanism for people to make decisions easily.”
The apex of the presentation and perhaps the entire day, which was a huge success, was provided by attendees who were concerned regarding compliance testing of glazing systems in order to meet new government regulations. Specifically, they were interested in the burden of responsibility of testing and who would be required to pay. The way the program is currently designed, glazing contractors would need to pay out significant hard costs for testing in order to even bid on a project.
In an age when “take 10 per cent off whatever they quoted you” seems to be commonplace, this heated discussion, and the conference in general, proved that there are still many companies passionate about this business and willing to contribute to and support the entire industry. •

is ALLMETAL’S Largest Stocking Distributor.

State of the art evolution-constantly creating, perfecting, and adapting to remain the leading innovator of components for the insulated glass industry. Our Stainless Steel Air Spacer, is unmatched for longevity, thermal performance and gas retention. It has the potential to significantly lower heating and cooling energy consumption.

For the past decade, the VFG Group in Montreal, Canada, has focused on the production of glass for all types of demanding architectural purposes. In addition, the company is a leader in producing innovative shower doors. At the recent Glasstec exhibition in Dusseldorf, Germany, in September 2010, the company decided to move ahead with its expansion plans and purchased the latest Tamglass RC200™ furnace to enable them to temper oversized jumbo glass panels in-house.
VFG has been a leader in Canada’s architectural glass distribution and processing industry since 1992, with products that include shower and commercial doors, glass displays, storefronts, along with all kinds of glass edging, beveling and polishing.
Pierre Leclerc, owner and founder of the Québec-based Company, Dominic Leclerc, Vice President, and Danny Lacombe, Sales Director, visited the Glasstec exhibition with the intent of learning more about the latest tempering technology. After much study and discussion, they signed a contract for the new Tamglass RC200™ furnace.
The latest technology featured with the Tamglass RC200™ furnace is an ideal fit for the requirements of the expanding VFG Group.
Lacombe says: “We spoke to many of the Glaston personnel at Glasstec and got to know more about the new furnace. We were really impressed by its capabilities and decided to take the decision right there on the spot.”
What’s especially important in the tempering of jumbo glass panels is the ability of the new furnace to minimize iridescence and assure a high-quality spotless glass product. The men were also impressed by the ease of use and automated functions.
“This will be our first Tamglass furnace, and one of the largest ones in all of Canada. We have already started our factory extension which is our third extension in the last seven years,” Dominic Leclerc states.
The Tamglass RC200™ from Glaston will give VFG the ability to temper oversized jumbo heavy and high performance hard and soft coat Low-E glass.
Once the furnace is delivered and commissioned in July of 2011, VFG will have the capability to provide oversized tempered

glass to customers across North America.
“We’re really excited,” Dominic Leclerc comments. “Our new furnace will allow us to temper glass up to 96 x 190 inches, ideal for some of the latest architectural designs in glass.”
Lacombe continues, “In addition to becoming a major player in the commercial business, this will enable us to be the largest producer of shower glass in all of Canada. And we intend to move into the US market, as well.”
VFG recently launched its innovative sliding system concept, called Revolution Design, made entirely of glass: no hinges, ultrasilent handling, easy maintenance and exceptional durability.
Available in various textured designs, the large glass panels are ideal for shower doors, interior panels for bathtubs and as a replacement for traditional French doors. Another special and patented product made with these glass panels is the 2 sliding door shower, which will soon be offered for commercial applications.
With the new furnace, VFG is also aiming to provide 24 hour service. “We intend to offer outstanding quality and service to homes, condos, our existing customer base, and eventually to a growing number of commercial applications.”
In terms of service from Glaston, both Dominic and Danny from VFG agree that Tamglass RC 200™ is ideal for their company at this point in the company’s development. Additionally important for them is the fact that after-sales service is close by. New Jersey is only 5 hours away if they need spare parts.
“We knew what we wanted: a good product with good service,” Leclerc smiles.

On Nov. 29 the National Research Council (NRC) released updated versions of Canada’s Model Building Codes that cover fire, plumbing and buildings. At the same time, the government offered an updated version of Canada’s Model Energy Code for Buildings for review.
Canada has two model energy building codes. One deals with buildings of more than three storeys in height and the other with residential homes. In the case of the Model National Building Code for Homes, it has been decided to delay the release until 2012, when it will be incorporated into Part 9 of the National Building Code of Canada.
Historically, building regulation has been a provincial and territorial responsibility and by utilizing the “model” building code method the provinces and territories are able to adopt and/or modify the codes to suit their particular needs – or in some cases they can choose to adopt certain sections.
To date, only two jurisdictions (Ontario and Vancouver) have referenced energy efficiency codes in their building regulations. None of the other provinces have incorporated them in their entirety, although some jurisdictions have referenced certain sections.
Energy efficiency was first addressed in the codes in 1997 and we are now seeing the first update in a cycle that typically involves revising codes every five years. The trend towards regulating energy efficiency can be traced back to 1992, when the federal government passed its first legislation that focused on performance and labelling of energy consuming products, including windows and doors.
It took considerable effort to incorporate any references to energy efficiency into the codes. Historically, this concept has not been included in the mandate of the agencies that write the documents.
One of the challenges in updating the code involved determining how much energy we wanted to save in relation to what it would cost. This was not an easy task.
FENESTRATION FORUM
This is somewhat surprising, considering the fact that buildings are the largest consumers of energy in Canada, accounting for one-third of all energy demand. Space and water heating account for almost 80 per cent of that. One of the challenges in updating the code involved determining exactly how much energy we wanted to save in relation to what it would cost. This was not an easy task.
In this case, they operated on the assumption that a 20 to 25 per cent improvement in energy efficiency would be appropriate, and decided that where the energy came from was not an issue. They also decided after consultation that how the building was being used or occupied would not be considered in the overall discussion in the development of the code.
The updated energy code specifically references “fenestration to wall ratio,” which apparently will be set at 40 per cent, or 0.40. We’ll have to wait and see if any provincial governments adopt the model code.
When it comes to building codes and energy efficiency, Canada compares quite favourably with most urbanized countries. There’s still a lot of room for improvement, though, especially when we consider that space and water heating is consuming a considerable portion of our energy.
This is offset to a certain degree by the fact that we have a well-established testing, accreditation and certification sector that supports the industry and encompasses many aspects of energy efficiency.
When I did a survey, I found that nations like Australia had nationally mandated energy codes that included “across-the-board” legislation requiring “evidence of compliance” to established energy standards. Germany, the United Kingdom and other countries also have mandatory systems in place.
In general terms, in addition to promoting energy efficiency, energy codes help establish a level playing field for evaluation of building performance and building materials. They also support decision-making and encourage innovation. This translates into the development of new products and job opportunities.
The cost of incorporating energy efficiency improvements in a residential home totals about $1,600 and saves about $530 a year in energy costs. Amortized over 20 years, like a mortgage, this represents an excellent investment.
As a result, we should almost certainly be much more proactive in encouraging provinces and territories to adopt and enforce these model energy codes. •
Kolbe has announced the addition of Ultra EP (Energy Performance) casement windows to its Ultra Series product family of aluminum-clad wood windows. The new Ultra EP windows feature triple-pane glass to meet the Energy Star criteria for all Canadian climate zones, which went into effect Oct. 1, 2010.
Internationally, Energy Star-qualified windows are tested and certified by an independent, accredited agency. Window products can qualify for Energy Star based on their U-factor. U-factors for the four Canadian climate zones range from 0.21 to 0.32, expressed in metric units as 1.20-1.80.
Kolbe’s Ultra EP casement and awning windows come standard with 1-3/8-inch (2.54-centimetre) insulating glass and low-e coatings designed to achieve U-factors as low as 0.19 (approximately 1.00 in metric). Lower U-factor numbers indicate a slower transfer of heat from a warm area to a cold area.
Ultra EP wood windows’ exteriors are clad in durable aluminum. The aluminum is finished with a protective, fluoropolymer coating that carries up to a 30-year warranty, or with an optional anodize that enhances the metallic appearance. On the interior, pine is the standard, but many wood species are available, including those certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. A broad palette of paints or water-based stains can be specified, along with hardware and accessory choices, to match nearly any décor.
Kolbe’s Ultra EP windows’ 3.25-inch (8.255-centimetre) jamb depth fits most standard applications. Sloped sills direct water away from the structure and carefully coped corners on the sash. On the

Ultra EP window, a 2.25-inch (5.715-centimetre) thick sash, multipoint keeper and engineered hinges accommodate the thicker, heavier triple-pane glass, while ensuring nearly effortless operation for the homeowner.

New to the Bohle range of products are Armored corner protectors, a product that the company says protects glass perfectly. According to Bohle, whether the glass gets bumped or dropped, with the reusable corner protectors the impact is absorbed and the glass remains undamaged.
Bohle holds the exclusive worldwide distribution rights for the Armored corner protectors and is now launching the product in North America.
“It just makes sense,” explains Jim Droppelman, owner of Custom Glass Works in North Carolina. The family business is one of the first North America customers of Armored corner protectors. “Our company has the reputation for supplying high quality, polished tempered glass for frameless shower enclosures and specialist applications. We deliver and install in domestic homes, hotels and office spaces and most of the time the conditions are not ideal. Tight workspaces, unfinished building sites: we have seen them all. One wrong move during a tempered glass installation and you are counting the costs of replacing the panel and moving your finish date back a couple days. Working with Bohle’s new Armored corner protectors has given me one less thing to worry about during my installations.”
Armored corner protectors are available for 1/4-, 3/8-, 1/2- and 3/5-inch (6-, 10-, 12- and 15-millimetre) glass. A 5/16-inch (8-mm) version is coming soon.
To show the effect of the Armored corner protectors, Bohle has prepared a video that compares the new product with conventional corner protectors. The video can be accessed at www.bohle-america.com.

Unicel Architectural and Technical Glass Products (TGP) has announced the availability of Unicel’s patented Vision Control louvres-in-glass combined with Pilkington Pyrostop glazing from TGP. This is the first such product assembly to achieve Underwriters Laboratories (UL) fire protection classification. Vision Control insulating glass units now incorporate glazing with fireratings of 45, 60 and 90 minutes.
“The UL Classified Vision Control and Pilkington Pyrostop solution meets a strong demand for fire-rated privacy systems, particularly in health-care environments,” said Jean-Francois Couturier, CEO of Unicel. “Architects have often struggled with the issue of specifying hygienic privacy control solutions that meet stringent hospital fire-rating requirements. By combining hermetically sealed, adjustable louvres with fire-resistant glazing, we provide a second-to-none solution to address both safety and privacy concerns. No other system provides this level of vision control flexibility with UL Classified fire-resistant glazing.”
The combined Vision Control and Pilkington Pyrostop glazing assembly has been UL fire-rated for doors, windows, transoms and sidelights.
“Today’s fire-rated glazing systems greatly expand design flexibility,” added Jeff Razwick, vice-president of business development for TGP. “Products like Pilkington Pyrostop have clarity and aesthetics similar to regular window glass, while providing protection from the high heat of building fires. And, they combine well with other systems such as Unicel’s Vision Control to offer a range of performance options. ”
Vision Control is a patented, hermetically sealed glass unit combining louvres within glass that can be customized to virtually any shape for interior or exterior glazing applications. Pilkington Pyrostop is a fire-rated and impact safety-rated glazing material that blocks radiant heat, helping protect people and valuables on the nonfire side of the glass where heat transfer might be a concern.TGP is the sole North American supplier of Pilkington Pyrostop.

by MARGARET WEBB
Margaret Webb is the executive director of the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association (IGMA). She can be reached at mwebb@ igmaonline.org.
Since its formation in October 2000, the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) has published five major technical manuals addressing pre- and post-fabrication subject matters in a straightforward, practical approach. In addition, we have developed a product certification program for the North American markets and completed three research projects, with a fourth currently underway.
Development of topical, timely, user-friendly manuals and guidelines is one of the primary areas of focus for IGMA. As Energy Star requirements become more and more stringent, triple- and quad-glazed insulating glass units will become the norm in many of the climatic zones.
Multiple airspace insulating glass (IG) units successfully address code requirements in those areas that require improved thermal performance. However, they come with particular requirements.
The Design Considerations for Multiple Airspace IGU task group convened for the first time in December 2009. Since then they have developed the draft text for identifying conditions that should be addressed when designing and fabricating triple- and quad-glazed insulating glass units.
In addition to ensuring that the glass is clean, the corners tight and sealant properly applied and consistent, multiple airspace IG units have special design considerations such as gas content, coatings and exterior condensation, thermal stress, wind load, stresses on seal system, fabrication techniques, altitude limits, glazing , non-structural intermediate layers, glass thickness and structural glazing applications.
Multiple airspace IG units are designed to improve thermal performance (i.e., U-factor). Accompanying this improvement is the fact that the outdoor glass surface temperature will become lower. Under certain conditions the glass temperature may drop below the dew point of the outside air. When this
Multiple airspace insulating glass (IG) units successfully address code requirements in those areas that require improved thermal performance.
INSULATING ISSUES
happens moisture will condense on surface number 1. It should be understood that when this happens, there is nothing wrong with the insulating glass unit.
The condensation shows that it has superior insulating properties. Under the right set of atmospheric conditions, it is possible to get condensation on surface number 1 of almost any IG unit. However, the lower the U-factor of the insulating glass, the greater the chance for exterior condensation. Surface number 1 anti-condensation coatings, on the exterior of the glazing, are designed to reduce the condensation effect, while minimizing changes to appearance or thermal/optical properties of the IG unit.
The location of the low-e coating within multiple airspace IG units can have vastly different effects, depending on where the glass surface is located. Low-e coatings facing either side of any given airspace could potentially increase glass temperature enough to have a negative impact.
For elevation or barometric considerations a multiple airspace IG unit is just one large cavity with the burden of expansion and contraction placed on the outboard glass. So, a quad with three 3/8-inch cavities and elevation or barometric factors are the same for a double-glazed IG unit with a cavity of 1-1/8 inches.Due to that large cavity the bowing of the outboard glass lite will be the same as if it were one large 1-1/8-inch cavity. However, for temperature expansion and contraction, it is very likely that the cavities will expand and contract at unequal rates unless there is some form of equalization between the cavities such as small “burn” holes or thinner glass on the inside lites.
Progress on this new publication is proceeding rapidly as the task group members recognize the immediate need for this information. Publication is expected in 2011 and the new manual will join IGMA’s other publications such as IGMA’s Glazing Guidelines, Visual Quality Guidelines, the IG Manufacturing Quality Procedures Manual, Design Guidelines for Acoustical Glass, Preventing IG Failures, and IGMA’s Glass Design program (which will be updated this year to address triple-glazed units).
On Oct. 2, 2010, IGMA turned 10 years old. Although the alliance is young, the organization’s roots go back to 1967 when the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association of Canada and the Sealed Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association were both incorporated. IGMA is acknowledged internationally as the leading technical organization for insulating glass. •
