WELCOME MESSAGE

GREAT TO BE BACK

When we brought Top Glass to Calgary last year it was something of an experiment. Canadian trade shows have tended to cluster in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal for the very simple reason that that is where the most people are. But our team had a strong intuition that a show for all of western Canada would attract enough interest and excitement to overcome the travel distances, and boy we weren’t disappointed. The turnout and feedback in 2024 was easily sufficient to convince us that Calgary needs an architectural glass event every year. So here we are and here you are, too. Thanks!

One great part of coming to Calgary is the nearby availability of top-tier experts in architectural glass to present a valuable education program. Calgary’s own Shiva Zargar of Build Neutral and Dallas Paquette of Everlast will enrich the discussion in our One Number panel. We’re proud to again welcome top students from NAIT and SAIT for GAMA’s apprenticeship awards. B.C.ers Terry Adamson, Murray Frank and Jonathan Layton didn’t have too far to travel. Art Huard has made the trip from Toronto, but knows the region well from his many years criss-crossing the country as an architectural sales representative.

We hope you find today fun and valuable. As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions for future events. Don’t hesitate to say hello to myself, our brand manager Leslie Osborne or event planner Azeemah Abowath is you have any questions or comments.

IT’S A WINNING STRATEGY.

9:00 AM SHOW OPENS

Top Glass is where you can visit top suppliers to the architectural glass industry. Over 40 vendors with a laser focus on Canada’s ICI glazing market will be on hand to answer your questions. You might learn more on the show floor than in the lecture hall!

9:30 AM - 10:45 AM

TEST ONCE AND SCALE: THE FENESTRATION CANADA THERMAL PERFORMANCE CALCULATOR

Presenter: Terry Adamson, Fenestration Canada technical director

A brave new world of performance validation may be on the horizon now that Vancouver has recognized Fenestration Canada’s online thermal performance calculator as an acceptable way to verify a fenestration assembly’s thermal performance, with other jurisdictions likely to follow suit. Say goodbye to non-compliant model-size thermal performance and benefit from actual size-specific values using your scaled certified data and meet the aggressive specified requirements – with the thermal calculator you can scale up the data quickly with no additional cost and have your building inspector jumping for joy!

10:45AM - 11:45 AM

INSIDE LUXWALL: AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT VACUUM INSULATING GLASS MANUFACTURING

Presenter: Art Huard, NVoy

In a North American first, LuxWall’s Canadian representative, Art Huard of NVoy, will reveal (some) of the dark secrets of how vacuum insulating glass is made and made commercially viable at LuxWall’s incredible Litchfield, Mi., manufacturing facility. Robots, vision systems, four-micron flatness tolerances, custom-made hyper-tempering lines, high-precision primer application, funky clamping systems…it’s a peek over the frontier of what’s possible in glass fabrication.

11:45 AM - 12:45 PM LUNCH

12:45 PM - 1:15 PM

GAMA APPRENTICESHIP AWARDS

Join the leaders of Alberta’s glass industry as they recognize our next generation of glaziers. The GAMA Apprenticeship Awards go out to top achievers in the glazing programs at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). It’s a proud moment for these talented young people – the smiles say it all!

1:15 PM - 2:30 PM

FIREPROOF FENESTRATION: TIME TO GET READY FOR WILDFIRE RESISTANCE REQUIREMENTS

Presenter: Murray Frank, Building It Right

As wildfires get worse every year, Natural Resources Canada has started hosting meetings about developing Canadian standards for wildfire resiliency in homes that go beyond the familiar interior fire-resistance rules. Those rules will include windows and doors and commercial projects in fire-prone areas. Murray Frank conducted the most expensive wildfire-resilience test ever performed in Canada when his B.C. cabin, built purposely to resist wildfires, burned down in a wildfire. He’s at Top Glass West to tell us what he learned and what we need to know about protecting facades from these specific kinds of fires.

2:30 PM

THE ONE NUMBER PANEL

Moderator: Patrick Flannery, Glass Canada

Panelists:

• Jonathan “JoMo” Layton, Layton Consulting

• Shiva Zargar, Build Neutral

• Dallas Paquette, Everlast Group of Companies

Embodied carbon regulations are being developed right now for the 2030 National Building Code update cycle. You know all that work you put in to making your products insulating? Well, get ready to do it all over again, except this time to make them low-carbon. Which might mean they need to be less insulating. Oh, and then be ready in a few years to upgrade their resilience and longevity, which may or may not impact their insulating values and carbon content. Better check the solar heat gain while you are at it in case your design increases the cooling requirements.

Is it time to get off this hamster wheel of half-measures when it comes to sustainable building regulation? Some jurisdictions around the world have mandated One Number – the allowable carbon intensity per square foot of the building project – and left it to architects and contractors to figure out how to achieve it. Is this something our industry wants and should be pushing for with the code authorities? Let’s hash it out in the room with our highly not-shy experts.

He also served for 11 years with WDMA-BC/FenBC to June 2015, including two terms as president, then spent seven years on the board of Fenestration Canada, including one term as association president. A vocal advocate for the industry – competitor or ally – he sees all as colleagues in a challenging business. In May of 2021, Terry joined Fenestration Canada as their on-staff Technical Director. Terry appreciates the challenges facing manufacturers trying to work under confusing building codes and market conditions and is never reluctant to voice his opinion or listen to others in the hopes of finding solutions.
