2 30 THAT’S RICH All ideas are not good ideas when it comes to marketing projects. by Rich Porayko
Relaxed enthusiasm

by Patrick Flannery
Maybe intangibles matter more than we think.
Hockey fans watched transfixed as the Las Vegas Golden Knights threatened to do something no expansion team has ever done in any sport: win a championship in their first year of existence. As it turned out, experience and star power finally prevailed to bring the Knights back to Earth, but still the team’s accomplishment in making the finals is remarkable. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that what the Knights have done this year will change the league. Coaches and GMs are going to start wondering what might happen if they balance their lines and give more middle-of-the-road players a chance to play more minutes. Clogging up the middle and looking for loser points in overtime will (hopefully) be discarded in favour of Vegas’ flying, wide-open style that pressurizes defences to the breaking point. And I think just about every team is going to be looking at the effort they don’t put in to the entertainment around the game at the rink and realize they are missing a huge opportunity to attract spectators outside of die-hard hockey fans, especially the young families their future will depend on.
It’s that last point that intrigues me and makes me wonder if there’s a business lesson there. The Vegas players obviously rode a wave of enthusiasm, fun and excitement all year. They were loose and fired up at the same time, led by the relaxed good humour of their veteran goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury. The mass shooting tragedy just as the season began last fall provided an instant bonding and motivating influence, though that’s hardly something anyone would want to replicate. What could be replicated maybe is the spirit and energy in and around the team where they draw positive vibes from the wild Vegas crowds and translate it into
maximum effort and a great attitude.
It’s easy to get impatient with discussion of “intangibles.” They are, by definition, not measureable or even reliably detectable. They exist in the dark space between people’s ears, where cause and effect react in unpredictable ways. We can all point to specific instances of someone doing well in circumstances that should have made things tough for them, and conversely people underperforming when everything was set up for their success. The temptation is to hand-wave the whole topic and insist that everyone rise above their feelings to do their best in all circumstances. We hear frequently that “professionals” should be able to do this. Certainly that needs to be the stated expectation. But the reality is that a good atmosphere raises the performance floor for professionals just as much as anyone else. I’ve seen firsthand what the impact of a good corporate environment can be. Here at Annex Business Media (this magazine’s publisher), we’ve managed to achieve some of the same feeling of relaxed enthusiasm that the Golden Knights exhibit. Management encourages us to try new things and, if they don’t work, heads don’t roll. Bosses are good-humoured, accessible and positive. The resulting energy has generated strong growth in the company to the point where we are now Canada’s largest private trade publisher, producing over 60 channels for various industries.
It’s summertime, so you are very busy. But maybe when things back off a bit later in the year you’ll want to think about how you can generate that spirit of relaxed enthusiasm in your shop and make your own improbable run for the Cup.

Calgary hits all the right notes
Fenestration Canada held its Spring Conference June 4 through 6 at the Hotel Arts in Calgary. The event drew around 130 window and door manufacturers and installers, and their suppliers, to educational seminars, association meetings and social networking opportunities. Headlining the event was keynote speaker Graham Sherman, president of the Tool Shed Brewing Company. Sherman’s message was to take your passions all the way, to commit 100 per cent to what you want to do and to absolutely refuse to quit until you’ve achieved your goals. Social opportunities included the welcome reception at Gasoline Alley in Calgary’s historic Heritage Park. Delegates were welcomed to the city with a White Hat Ceremony, well fed and watered, then entertained by a live band and display of historic cars, trucks and farm equipment. The President’s Dinner on the evening of the 5th included some very nice recognition for some very dedicated association supporters. Lisa Bergeron of Jeld-Wen, past president, and Jennifer Small of Screenco, the new president, teamed up to emcee the night. They thanked Eddie Choe of Trimlite and Ted Paetkau of Fenestration Components International for their work as local hosts. Stephane Labelle of ConstructBuy won the President’s Award for his hard work on the WinDoor Committee bringing the show to Quebec. Greg Dickie of Atlantic Windows was thanked for his efforts as he announced his retirement from the board. The conference included Fenestration Canada’s AGM, at which Bergeron presented an overview of association activities. She introduced Erin Roberts of Zeem as the new executive director of the association replacing the departed Cindy Gareau. She discussed the association’s coordination with
Rehau to close Winnipeg plant
Rehau has announced plans to adjust its window solutions division in Canada and the United States. As a result, it will close its manufacturing plant in Winnipeg by the end of 2018.
“The decision to cease operations at our window profile extrusion plant in Winnipeg was difficult but necessary,” said Christian Fabian, CEO of Rehau Americas. “There is no realistic prospect for profitability and therefore we have reached the unfortunate but inevitable decision to close this facility.” The Winnipeg plant provides profiles to a network of window manufacturers who supply uPVC windows to residential and commercial projects throughout Canada and the United States. Along with the plant closure will come an adjusted North American product portfolio, focused on delivering the technologically advanced designs upon which the Rehau window brand was built.
“Our plant in Winnipeg will continue to operate

Natural Resources Canada to help implement its market transformation roadmap intended to drive acceptance of high-performance fenestration across the country. She also described the association’s efforts to work with GreenON to help smooth out the implementation of its rebate program in Ontario. All Fenestration Canada education efforts and events are showing growth and positive revenue trends.
“It’s been a great turnout and a great event,” said Small. “The keynote speaker was fantastic. I loved his message of how there is no option but to succeed. It relates a lot to what our fabricators are facing with increased regulations.”
Next year’s Spring Conference is planned for St. Catharines, Ont.
through 2018 as we sell down inventory and complete customer orders. We will work closely with our customers to support and prepare them for transition,” added Fabian. “We recognize the contributions our window solutions division employees have made over the years to Rehau and we are placing the highest priority on treating them fairly and respectfully. We are committed to working with them throughout this transition period.” The planned adjustment will affect 75 employees in Canada, as well as a small number of employees in the United States.
“We have a compelling business need to better align our assets with marketplace trends and customer requirements,” said Fabian. “To that end, we are setting up our manufacturing network to service innovative production lines in strategic geographic areas to better meet current and future production needs and the evolving needs of our customers.”

INDUSTRY NEWS
GreenGone
The GreenON rebate program has been cancelled. GreenON’s sudden launch made waves last December by promising buyers of replacement windows up to $5,000 in rebates when they purchased Energy Star Most Efficient windows from accredited dealers. The program came under fire from industry critics for its haphazard rollout, poor communication, conflicting rules and unclear procedures and requirements.
GreenON officials say the program will honour work agreements for work completed by October 31 as long as the rebate application is received by Nov. 30. Many window dealers and manufacturers are facing huge backlogs and lead times as a result of the flood of orders caused by GreenON and some are concerned dealers will not be able to fill orders on time resulting in customers losing their rebate. The original cutoff date for completed work was set at Aug. 31, but the province backtracked following feeback from Fenestration Canada and SAWDAC.
Fenestration Canada commented in a statement: “We are saddened to see the program go. While not perfect, the program was to be transformative for the industry in that it called for certified high-performance windows
installed by certified personnel. The problem with pulling the plug on such a program is that it will lead to layoffs in the near future. This instability makes it harder for manufacturers to keep their workforce and will lead to an economic slowdown in the sector and a resurgence of the underground economy. The abruptness of the cancellation will leave a lot of consumers high and dry. We urge the incoming government to review their position and extend the phase-out period at the very least the end of 2018. Fenestration Canada advocates for a permanent deep energy retrofit tax credit.”
Jason Neal, executive director of SAWDAC, comments: “It was great while it lasted for both consumers and window dealers. It has put Window Wise at the forefront of industry standards on proper window installation techniques and how important it is. We look forward to working with other programs like this in the future.”
The cancellation of the GreenON rebate follows closely the Ontario provincial election that saw a PC majority government take power. Eliminating the Ontario capand-trade carbon emissions program was a major plank of the PC campaign. GreenON was financed by re-allocated carbon tax dollars.
FIT program returns to Fenestration Canada
Fenestration Canada announced at the Spring Conference that the association has purchased the rights to the Fenestration Installation Technician program from CSA and will retain ownership of it going forward. The program will be administered by Building Professionals, an ISO 17024-accredited building science consultancy out of Winnipeg. Fenestration Canada says the Ontario GreenON rebate program has indicated it will recognize work
by FIT-certified window installers as qualifying for the rebate once the program is launched. Robert Jutras of CLEB, chair of the FenCan Technical Committee, says they anticipate launch in late June or early July. FIT was created in 2012 to address demand for a simplified, low-cost certification process for window installers. Participation proved insufficient to cover the costs of administration and Fenestration Canada sold the program to its developer, CSA, in 2016.
George Warren wins C.P. Loewen award
George Warren, owner of Centennial Windows and Doors in London, Ont., was presented with Fenestration Canada’s C.P. Loewen award recognizing lifetime contributions to the Canadian window and door industry. The presentation was made at the Fenestration Canada Spring Conference’s President’s Dinner, June 5 in Calgary. Presenting the award was last year’s recipient, Kevin Pelley of Kohltech. As usual, Pelley brought a humorous twist to the presentation by appearing over video link (he was out of the country at the time of the event) wearing a Maritime sou’wester fishing hat to honour Warren’s Newfoundland origins. Lisa Bergeron, FenCan past president, also feted Warren and handed over the trophy along with Jennifer Small, FenCan president. Warren, who was accompanied by his wife, Rita, was obviously moved by the honour and

started his acceptance speech by reflecting on how remarkable it was that he was in this position given his beginnings in a small Newfoundland fishing village where he didn’t see a car until his teens. Warren thanked the many people who helped him along the way and promoted the association as a critical organization in the industry, saying the early advice he received to get involved was some of the best he ever got. Warren touched on the importance of bringing along the next generation of window and door businesspeople and commented on his pride at seeing women ascend to the highest levels of the association.

by Chris Meiorin
Winnipeg or Calgary?
Irecently had to make a decision: do I travel to Winnipeg or to Calgary? It certainly wasn’t an easy decision either. In Calgary, the Fenestration Canada 2018 Spring Conference was taking place. In Winnipeg, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) was hosting the 2018 Canadian Lean Conference. Both were important to me and both of great interest, however, both conferences were taking place at the same time. With this information, I had a tough decision to make.
I spent the first 20 years of my fenestration career with little or no interest in participating in our recognized association. My perception of the Canadian Window and Door Manufactures Association (now Fenestration Canada) was of an “old boys” club, that got together once a year for a golf tournament and drinking. As I’m not much of a drinker or golfer, I viewed both membership and attending the conference as something of little or no value. This perception, however, has changed over recent years, with a distinct and successful effort by Fenestration Canada to shed this image and work towards bringing value to its members with education sessions that went beyond the typical council and committee meetings and drilled into topics that we as fenestrators need to stay on top of. I not only became a member, but now enthusiastically attend every session, taking detailed notes. I made valuable connections, both socially and personally, and even found myself advocating membership with both manufacturers and suppliers. In short, I became a fan, largely due to value I felt the association brought to me as an individual and as a company.
I was first formally introduced to Lean via a Fenestration Canada webinar, “Lean... a journey, not a destination,” and I was later introduced to CME via Fenestration Manitoba’s FenCon18. I also spent the first 20 years of my career with not a lot of interest in or knowledge of Lean manufacturing. It’s not to say that we didn’t spend a lot of time improving our manufacturing efficiencies, we just didn’t have a label for it. However, this webinar opened my eyes to this systematic method and I was
& FINISH
intrigued and knew immediately that it would become my new and latest obsession.
As any business owner would tell you, time is a precious commodity. Often, we are faced with the challenges of how and where to allocate our time, both within the company and outside of work as well. If I was going to devote time away from my business and family, I wanted to ensure that there was a high return on this time investment and set out to diligently research the value streams of both these events.
The 2018 Canadian Lean Conference was exceptionally well laid out. The four-day conference was broken down into four different segments: workshops, tours, presentations, and keynote speakers. The presentations were further broken down into four different and distinct value streams: leadership, people, daily improvement and results. The tours focused on local businesses that continue to embrace Lean and included such industry peers as Loewen Windows and Doors, Alumicor, and Jeld-Wen. The keynote speakers too were of the highest quality and included manufacturing CEOs and practitioners who openly shared their respective triumphs and tribulations while on their Lean journeys. As you might assume for such a conference, everything was carried out with the utmost in efficacy and organization.
In contrast to the Lean Conference, information on the Fenestration Canada Spring Conference was limited. Line-dancing in cowboy hats seemed to be the event’s main draw. Now, that’s not to suggest that networking and socializing aren’t key to almost every and any association event, but if it’s not matched with at least as much attention to professional value-added opportunities, it can easily be bypassed by the key stakeholders. I recognize the efforts put forth by this organizing committee, most of whom are volunteering. It’s just that if you want the time commitment, there has to be a little more substance.
I went to Winnipeg.

BUILDING HERITAGE
Ruffell and Baker come home to success.
It all started in 1990 as a small family business, in a small office, within a small house. Today, London, Ont.,-based Heritage Renovations is a multi-award-winning company and highly recognized provider of windows and doors across southern Ontario.
by LINDSEY MCCAFFREY
Most recently, the business has experienced explosive and exciting year-over-year growth.
GETTING INTO THE BUSINESS
Today, siblings and vice-presidents Shannon Ruffell and James Baker are at the helm of Heritage Renovations. As children, the siblings had grown up in the London area but then left to pursue other interests: Ruffell was previously a senior executive at a large manufacturing company in Oakville, Ont., and Baker was doing renovations and working in government in Vancouver. In terms of returning home to pursue a family business, it was just a matter of time.
“Returning to London to pursue company ownership and pass down to future generations was always something we talked about doing,” says Ruffell. “We were just looking for the right opportunity and timing. A couple years ago was the perfect time to come back and help expand the business as vice-presidents, using our experience from other companies we had worked at.
“Plus, our family has always had a strong renovation background, so we already felt very comfortable with windows and doors,” says Baker. “Between that, my strong renovations background and corporate experience, as well as Shannon’s senior management corporate experience, we’ve been able to create a really great partnership for bringing this business forward.”
Coming in at a later point in the business life cycle, Ruffell and Baker are today focused on taking Heritage Renovations to the next level.
“We’re in our 30s and we’re very ambitious, and we have lots of fresh ideas,” says Ruffell.
A FAMILIAR PRESENCE IN MEDIA
Since joining Heritage Renovations, Ruffell and Baker have become familiar spokespeople on broadcast media.
“It was a natural fit to be able to create opportunities with the media, speak with them and take our knowledge out and share with the public on a wider scale,” she says. As such, Heritage Renovations is a regular go-to expert for outlets including CTV News and AM980’s “Ask the Experts” show.
“We speak about DIY projects, look at trends in windows, doors and renovations and discuss different things you should look for when choosing a contractor,” says Ruffell. “Really, it’s all about looking at things from the eyes of what’s important to the customer. For example, we’ll talk about what the process is, what customers should look for and some of the pitfalls that can occur when working with a contractor.”
Heritage Renovations has also increased its focus on — and brand recognition through — social media and metrics.
“We try to post a lot of different things on our social media channels including esthetics tips and trends,” says Ruffell.“Basically, every time we work with a customer, we’re focused on providing an engaging and likeable experience, where the customer feels they can trust us in terms of our knowledge. And now, if you’re talking to anyone about windows and doors, they know our name.”
REBATE PROGRAM BRINGS NEW BUSINESS
In late 2017, the Green Ontario Fund presented an exciting opportunity to window and door

businesses and their customers throughout the province: rebates for home owners of up to $5,000 for select high-performance windows. As soon as Heritage Renovations management heard about the program, they jumped at the chance for early certification.
“We could tell right away how popular it was going to be with customers and understandably the program’s initial rollout created a bit of a backlog for companies to get certified,” says Ruffell. “We wanted to get on that list of certified companies immediately, so we could promote being an official program partner and offer great savings to customers.”
Rather than wait for the program to come to London to offer certification, Heritage flew team members to Ottawa to apply just after Christmas.
“They announced the program on December 14th, and we were on the certified list the first week of January,” says Ruffell. As it turned out, Heritage Renovations already had met most of the criteria for certification.
HIRING THE “PERFECT PEOPLE”
In just a few short months since certification, Heritage Renovations has experienced an exciting upswing in sales.
“We are a very busy place typically between residential and commercial, but right now, because of the rebate program, it’s led us to hire even more people,” says Ruffell.
Focused on an excellent end-to-end customer service process, Heritage Renovations puts much thought into the people they hire.
“With the rebate program and our need to grow our team, we had to let customers know they would have a bit of a longer wait than usual for our services,” says Ruffell. “But on the positive side, because we take such care to hire the perfect people for our team, our customers will get
After going their separate ways for years, brother and sister team James Baker and Shannon Ruffell returned to London, Ont., to start Heritage Renovations. Fuelled by a drive for quality and customer service, they are seeing the company grow quickly.

It’s been exciting for Ruffell and Baker to see their name recognition grow in their local market. Giving esthetic tips on social media has kept customers engaged and aware of the company.
top quality service no matter who they talk to, and work that will serve them for years from now.”
“We ensure that every single member of our team will treat our customers like gold,” adds Baker. “No matter whether our customers need a one-window replacement in their home or windows through an entire apartment building, they will get the same treatment. We really do have a team of all-stars and we’re told that all the time.”
Moreover, when selecting manufacturers, Heritage Renovations considers three criteria.
“We look not only for quality in the present, but quality that will stand the test of time,” says Ruffell. “Plus, we make sure they have a reasonable delivery time and whether they can consistently meet customers’ deadlines. Finally, we look at warranty, that is, if there is a warranty claim on the product, will they treat their customers with the same level of service as we treat our own customers?
“Ultimately, it’s about cherry-picking manufacturers who offer the best quality products, and then we pair it with the best quality installation and service.”
As a result, Heritage Renovations has accumulated many business awards and accolades over the last several years, including the highest possible rating with the Better Business Bureau, a consecutive slew of Consumer Choice Awards in the
Window and Door category and other local recognitions such as Best of London and Reader’s Choice. And just recently, Heritage Renovations was also nominated for the Better Business Bureau Integrity Award.
“We really embody integrity by treating our customers in the best way possible. I think that’s been key to our success and what sets us apart because every single person here really knows their stuff. Every customer has a great, consistent, happy experience with us from beginning to end,” says Ruffell.
WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY
Recently, Ruffell was nominated for a local 20 Under 40 award. She points to the benefits of having women in the industry, particularly when it comes to residential work.
“The windows, doors and construction industry can be a bit of a boys’ club, but I like to think we’re being a bit innovative by having a female in senior leadership and bringing ideas,” she says. “A lot of the time, women are the leading decisionmakers in esthetics, styling and functionality. We’ve also added more women to our team, and you see more of them in our showroom interacting with customers. It’s a fresh and exciting approach.”
Having given birth a few months ago to a son, Ruffell has been transitioning slowly back into the business.
“I took a bit of time off after giving birth,
but with the general growth of the business and then pairing that success with the rebate program, it’s been impossible to take traditional maternity leave,” she says.
“However, I’ve had lots of flexibility and support since my son was born. Sometimes I even bring my baby to work. I was demoing some windows and doors in the showroom the other day, holding my baby in my arms and people were loving it!”
THE NEXT GENERATION
Now, the path is being paved for a new generation of business owners.
“It’s great being able to work with my brother everyday,” says Ruffell. “It’s brought everyone that much closer together, and now we’re working towards a brighter future.”
Moreover, says Baker, business presents an exciting opportunity to have a family legacy company.
“Between Shannon and I, we have five children all under the age of six. And with the exception of the newest baby, they’ve already expressed aspirations of working here one day,” he says. “It’s our intention to keep this business and pass it down from generation to generation as we go on.”
While the newest addition to the family can’t speak for himself, Ruffell says her son is already a big fan of the business.
“From the first day he was born, he was decked out in a Heritage Renovations hat!” she says.

FEATURE
REBATE RUNDOWN
Attempts to influence the market have mixed success.
Ah, the rebate – always great for the customer (unless it’s too little or too onerous) but can be a bit of a mixed blessing for retailers and manufacturers. That certainly seems to be the case with rebates for energy-efficient residential windows across Canada.
by TREENA HEIN
Before we examine rebate programs available in various provinces, let’s look at the big picture. While some believe these programs are offered by federal and provincial-territorial governments as an incentive to vote the party in power back in, governments generally claim they exist to help citizens save money on their heating bills and to reach broader policy targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In February this year, the federal government held a stakeholder workshop called “Market Transformation for Residential Window Technologies in Canada” related to the PanCanadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. This meeting followed a related roadmapping R&D workshop in November 2017, where aspirational goals related to window cost and performance targets, R&D needs and more, were discussed. The goal is to move Canada’s codes and standards for new housing to Net Zero levels by 2030, and the fenestration component of that will mandate windows meeting a 0.80 U-factor – even for replacement windows. Obviously, this will increase the cost of windows significantly and Natural Resources Canada is looking at incentives to push the market to accept the investment.
It is uncertain what future rebate programs will come out of these discussions, but in terms of past and existing rebate programs, citizens of B.C. have had access to several in the recent past. In late 2007, a provincial sales tax exemption was offered within the Energy Star program and in February 2009, after the recession of the time was underway, three other programs
kicked in: the federal Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC), the federal EcoEnergy Program and the LiveSmart Program from BC Hydro. In the mind of Cam Drew, president of ThermoProof Windows and Doors in Chemainus, B.C.,the small rebate involved in the PST exemption program only prompted customers who were getting windows replaced anyway to step up the quality of their order, but the triple whammy of programs in 2009 boosted window installations significantly.
Since then, there has been one program for windows in B.C. offered by BC Hydro called PowerSmart. However, Drew notes customers have to get two other items done besides windows, such as the installation of a heat pump, and that “the incentive is limited. It’s only for people doing major renovations, and not big enough to move the needle in terms of us doing more business.” BC Hydro declined to comment.
In Ontario, the first window rebate program offered was in the 1980s from Ontario Hydro: $5 per square foot for windows with low-E.
“The downside, according to the people who ran the program, was that the quality of installation was not addressed,” notes Phil Lewin, sales and marketing manager at Gem Windows and Doors in Toronto.
The difficulty of implementing an effective rebate program was demonstrated in Ontario by GreenON. For 10 glorious months, from December 2017 through October of this year, it offered a large rebate of $500 for each Energy Star Most Efficient window installed
by dealers making a qualifying list. However, complaints about GreenON abounded. Installers pointed out that invoicing and program submission requirements (age and type of existing windows, etc.) changed several times. A promised program logo never materialized. Webinar information contradicted other given information. The submission portal took four months to get up and running.
Finally, and perhaps most revealing of the problems with rebate programs, GreenON was abruptly cancelled in June by the newly elected PC government of Ontario. They had run on a platform of opposing carbon taxes of any kind, and GreenON was financed by revenues from Ontario’s cap-and-trade emissions-reduction program. GreenON has given homeowners and contractors until the end of October to complete outstanding work orders and until the end of November to apply for the rebate. Given the massive work backlog the program has generated, it seems virtually certain that many orders will not
be delivered in time and receipt of those rebates put at risk.
Limited time versus long-term programs
Drew says the possible merits of limited time programs are discussed regularly in a lot of meetings he attends. He and his colleagues wonder if they “just move business over to a different year or whether they cause people to have work done that they would never have done with their home.” He adds that it’s always hard to say how much participation there will be in a limited program –it obviously depends on the level of incentive offered and the number of hoops participants have to go through. Drew does believe window makers want limited-time programs as they generally do bring in more profit, but that the HR challenges are tough. “We had to bring on new staff,” he says, referring to the triple offering in BC in 2009, “but then when the programs were over, business dropped by about 25 per cent. Of course at that point, we had to lay off staff, so it

Something

was a roller coaster. It’s not easy to bring on staff who realize the job may not be permanent.”
Many would rather see more permanent rebate programs. Lewin would like governments and utilities to find a simple way to provide ongoing encouragement of the purchase of great windows, well installed. Manitoba has offered one ongoing program since 2001, the Power Smart Residential Loan. Under this program, Manitoba Hydro offers loans of up to $7,500 at a low, cost-recovery interest rate (right now 4.8 per cent) for highperformance triple pane windows and/or other home energy-saving items provided by qualified suppliers. “It varies, but we have about 5,000 loans going every year,” notes Becky Radtke, Manitoba Hydro’s marketing specialist for the program. Radtke believes that this particular long-term arrangement is beneficial because both customers and contractors are familiar with it and therefore very comfortable. “The only comment we hear from contractors is that they’d like customers to be able to borrow more.”

FENESTRATION CANADA
Up for the challenge
by Jennifer Small
Iam honoured and excited to be Fenestration Canada’s President in this important and dynamic time for our association. We have a clear mission to support our members across Canada by providing education, networking, and technical resources. We are connecting fenestration industry stakeholders and proactively advocating for consistent, reasonable and enforceable regulations.
One of our goals as an executive over the past few years has been to strengthen our geographic presence, representation and influence. Just this year, we had a regional event in Moncton, N.B., a Spring Conference in Calgary, Alta., and we will have WinDoor in Quebec City. Each event brings with it education on issues relevant to both local and national stakeholders. By focusing on the entire country, we can engage fabricator and supplier members to share best practices on how to deal with fenestration challenges in different climates and regions, throughout various value chains and within different competing and regulatory landscapes.
We as an association have the responsibility to serve our members and ensure that energyefficient fenestration products continue to advance at an achievable and sustainable pace. As part of this responsibility, in the past year we have created a nationwide task group specifically targeted at NRCan’s aspirational goals where we as Fenestration Canada are voicing the concerns of our industry. The goal is to help support climate change with realistic and feasible manufacturing targets and considerations.
This push for energy efficiency is only beginning. This year, in Ontario, the GreenON program impacted a large group of our members by providing rebates to homeowners who replaced their windows with Energy Star Most Efficient windows. The first draft of the program left our members with many questions needing clarification and understanding. Fenestration Canada provided support and education to our members to help navigate the program while working in conjunction with program contractors to better the program and clarify and improve the fenestration component. In addition, we

have put a group of experts together to help develop FenCan training and education for the installation of fenestration products. This will help support the relaunch of the Fenestration Installation Technician certification exam, which in turn is another step on the path of code compliance.
The work does not stop here. As we develop our programs and provide education on codes and standards, we will continue to work with our members, key stakeholders and affiliate industry associations to improve code and regulation compliance and accountability. This is a major challenge facing our industry, however with the incredible professional leaders that work within our member companies we can develop strategies to better our industry and ensure the strong and compliant will thrive. Our association is on the right path. In this past year, we achieved several goals including defining what we do, who we are and why we exist through our member value proposition. This has given us a clear direction for our strategic plan and provides a framework for what we should be doing. As we attract and retain members, we now have a story to tell:
“As a FenCan member your company has an opportunity to influence standards and to advocate for consistent and achievable regulation. It has access to industry-specific education to help you face your business challenges and is part of a strong, supportive network of industry leaders.”
This is a time of change for the world, our country, and the fenestration industry. We can all sit on the sidelines and complain about what change comes our way, or we can get involved, have a voice, and volunteer our time for the benefit of our window and door manufacturers, suppliers, affiliates, and related associations. Because at the end of the day this is our passion and our livelihood. I am up for the challenge, are you?
Jennifer Small is president of Fenestration Canada and of Screenco, a Concord, Ont.,based manufacturer of window and patio screen products.

Strengthen your business through a powerful network, resources, information and education that enables you to be more competitive and successful.
Have a voice and a seat at the table to address key issues and regulations that impact the fenestration industry.
Engage and benefit from valuable connections regionally and nationally and member-only resources and opportunities.
Whether you are a small fabrications shop or a multinational manufacturer, industry supplier or regulator, your organization needs to be a part of this dynamic association.

THAT’S RICH
Flavour of the month
by Rich Porayko
Summer in Coquitlam: my favourite time of year. On top of the usual long weekend shenanigans, my family and I are known to enjoy an occasional delicious ice cream cone from time to time. There is a great hand-crafted ice cream shop near our home at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody. My son likes Cotton Candy and the wife prefers Maple Walnut. I’m always interested in trying new flavours and am happy with anything that has chunks of goodness. You don’t get a body like this eating quinoa.
I may be fond of the flavour of the month in my personal life, however Work Rich isn’t a big fan. I remember attending a meeting in a previous life where we discussed an upcoming marketing promotion. We talked about the terms, content and, among other details, the timeline to go to market: approximately three weeks. The next morning I received an email with a photo of a competitor’s promo and a note saying I needed to put something similar together and get it out right away. I dropped all of the time sensitive projects I was working and whipped together a similar (but better) promo with the details from the previous day’s meeting. Feedback was fast. It looked great, however the product had changed. Now the plan was to promote a completely different product. Back to the drawing board. A new mock-up lead to new feedback, a new format, new photos and new text. By the end of the day it was a new promo with nothing remotely similar to the previous day’s meeting or even the example from the competition.
And, like that, the project died because they weren’t set up to do the promotion in the first place. Misfire. What a waste of time and opportunity during an exceptionally busy time. It was a classic case of not sticking with the plan and having a series of kneejerk reactions.
There is nothing wrong with changing your mind. Tweaking details. Wordsmithing. Swapping out photos. Kyboshing the whole project. It’s expected. But when a project is completely turned upside down from the launch date to the product type, it can cause a lot of chaos, unhealthy stress and lost opportunity with your team.

I’ve written several times about marketing guru Seth Godin who talks about throwing ideas against the wall and seeing what sticks. He keeps what works and discards what doesn’t. I love this philosophy and frequently practice and preach about it. It sounds basic but there is a systematic strategy involved and it works.
I’m a big believer in continuous education in all forms. A former boss of mine would frequently attend executive conferences and seminars. He would come back from a course with new ideas on how to improve the business. Many of these were excellent and I learned a ton from him. Implementation wasn’t without its drawbacks, however, and, like clockwork, halfway through developing and executing one of the breakthrough ideas, he would lose interest. He would attend another course and come back charging in a different direction. It killed momentum and he lost trust from his employees with perpetual changes in direction. Every company can live in the muck for a few days but if you are perpetually struggling, you’re in trouble. It creates dysfunction. Ever wonder why you’re not making more profit? Dysfunction eats profit for breakfast.
Many aspects of business are seasonal and can be planned a year in advance. I often compare marketing to an operations schedule. Marketing has production times, resources, bottlenecks and delivery deadlines just like production does. Promotions can be easily planned on a basic calendar and shared. I prefer quarterly or bi-monthly promos as it can often take 30 days to move the needle. Creating a simple calendar doesn’t mean it’s written in stone. Entrepreneurship needs to be flexible so promos can be shuffled around, parked or added as required, however people can still have visibility of what is coming down the pipeline.
The best leaders that I have worked with have a consistent vision and communicate it early and often. The details in the plan might change but the overall vision is rock solid. This is the real world and dysfunction still happens but it should be the exception to the rule. If it is happening on a regular basis, look inward.
