Sleeping watchdogs

Uneven enforcement threatens to undermine standards.

WinDoor is around the corner and I’ve been helping to put together the education seminars for the event. I’ve found it to be an incredible amount of work, and I’ve only done a small part of it. If you get talking to someone who is on one of Fenestration Canada’s committees, please give them your thanks for the hard work these volunteers do to advance the industry. You can find information about the 2017 education sessions on page 16 – as you will see, the program is roughly three times the size of what it has been in the past, with a ton of great exclusive content.

One thing we found in rounding up presenters for these sessions was a strange ambivalence on the part of building code officials to taking part. It wasn’t that they had any particular difficulty with the event or the topics, but rather that they didn’t seem to feel that issues of code compliance for windows and doors were very relevant to them. That was an eyebrow-raiser for sure. As an industry, we’ve spent at least the last 10 years throwing blood and treasure at the problem of how to bring our products into compliance with NAFS and other new standards that have entered the codes. Jeff Baker has stood on chairs, sung karaoke and gone hoarse at podiums trying to raise awareness of the need for us to address these changes. But lurking in the background has always been this question of how and whether the standards will be enforced. Judging from some of the responses from the officials, it seems possible that you could deliver noncompliant products in some jurisdictions and never hear a word about it (though the spectre of legal liability in a future lawsuit would still exist).

This attitude would underline comments from Lisa Bergeron in her inaugural speech as Fenestration Canada president in the spring. She made a strong call for even and consistent enforcement of all building regulations, codes and laws across the country, saying one of her priorities as president would be to work with authorities to improve this. This is clearly needed. If governments are going to impose standards that require responsible fabricators to spend millions of dollars, they must not then betray those fabricators by allowing the unscrupulous and ignorant to simply ignore the rules. Some might make arguments about whether we need rules for non-safety-related issues such as air/water ingress. But no matter how you feel about it, it seems beyond dispute that the rules need to be observed and enforced once established. There’s simply no other fair way to proceed.

All of which will become especially relevant in the years ahead, as Canada continues to tighten energy efficiency standards in compliance with the Paris Accord’s climate change agreement. Debbie Scharf of Natural Resources Canada will be explaining these initiatives again at WinDoor, and you might want to bring your questions about how NRCan plans to encourage compliance with the new rules.

My speculation is that building officials do not want to be responsible for determining what is or is not compliant. It’s hard to blame them – they have a lot to look at on a building and are not experts in fenestration engineering. The push from inspectors will be for the industry to develop a common certification and labeling system that puts the onus for demonstrating compliance back on the fabricator. That’s something else we will discuss at WinDoor. See you there.

TALK RENOVATION WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS

A letter to SAWDAC members from Jason Neal, executive director.

To renovate or move is a big question your customers will be facing now with the housing market in a boom. Situations change and so do their needs for their homes. A growing family may mean they need to upgrade or renovate their homes or even move. Adult children leaving the nest means repurposing rooms with possibly more money to spend than before. Retirement often means downsizing, but some customers will prefer to stay in their family home. So, should they remodel or move? If, like most small and mediumsized fenestration dealers, the bulk of your business comes from renovations and replacements, you’ll want to be able to discuss the pros and cons and the impact each decision will have on their options for windows and doors.

Both options have pitfalls and headaches. We have all moved, whether it was out of our parents’ house or onwards and upwards, and usually in both those cases we have renovated

somewhat. Both of these situations can cause stress and financial burden. However, at SAWDAC we are seeing more renovations than selling taking place. Dealers are saying that clients are coming in and spending equity from the housing boom. What they are hearing is that selling your home and buying another could cost as much as 10 per cent of the price of the new home and that people are renovating when they move in anyways. Some of the things to consider when moving are commissions, legal fees and loan fees, to name a few. These fees mean a huge loss of capital that they have built up in their current home.

When you look at the cost/ benefit of moving over renovations, renovations are a more cost-effective way to upgrade living space. But if customers renovate, they can risk spending their homes out of the current location. If the neighborhood is filled with $500,000 houses, their house is going to be worth around $500,000. When they spend $250,000 on renovations, that’s money they will never get back if they try to sell in that location. This is where you need to ask some questions and be familiar with local

housing markets to see what scenario makes sense for that family. If they are staying in the house indefinitely, the resale value may not matter to them. If they are in one of the hot housing markets in the country, like Toronto or Vancouver, they may be able recoup any investment in a bidding war for their house. Anything you can tell the customer about how the renovations will affect the value of their home will be welcome information. Remodeling can seem to be more daunting than buying a home for many people. Your customer should be advised to work with a certified renovation contractor to figure out what they want to do, then build a budget around that. They need to do background checks on their builder, because if they end up with an incompetent one both you and them are asking for trouble either now or later. Because of your experience, you might be in a great position to give them some feedback on whom they have selected. A reputable builder will give your clients names of recent jobs. They should take a drive by to see the work. They should also ask the references if the job was done on time and on budget. And then there

are the internet reviews, though some of these need to be taken with a grain of salt. Obviously, they should be calling SAWDAC to ask for a member or a certified Window Wise installer! The next step will be paying for the renovations. Working with a certified SAWDAC dealer gives them help with financing options through our RenoPlan program with access to all types of different payment scenarios. A lot of homeowners decide to use their line of credit, but experience here tells us that line-of-credit borrowers tend to simply pay the interest and never reduce the debt. The best way to borrow for renovations is a principal and interest loan, where they are required to pay it back.

A lot of this will seem to be outside your scope of just providing windows and doors. But building a trusting relationship with your customers is a route to referrals and repeat business. If you are able to address some of these topics with your prospective clients, they may be more ready to put off moving and work with you instead.

Darcy reveals his softer side

Dan Darcy of Dan Darcy Associates has announced he has made donations of $715 and $500 to Feed Nova Scotia on behalf of Fenestration Canada and its management group, Zzeem, respectively. The Fenestration Canada donation was collected at the association’s annual general meeting in June. Darcy wore a kilt throughout the event and struck on the idea of fundraising for the charity at the lobster dinner event after fielding several questions as to what he was wearing under it. He proposed that he’d reveal the answer at the end of the night in return for donations. It can now be revealed that Darcy was in fact wearing his kilt in full observation of Scottish tradition.

“I have been a big supporter of Feed Nova Scotia for many years now,” Darcy explains. “It started around 1997 when my wife and I had our first neighbourhood Christmas party. On our invitation we asked that everyone bring non-perishable foods so that we can do our part in helping Feed Nova Scotia stock their shelves. So many of us are fortunate enough not to worry about when and where our next meals will come

Out for a flog

The rain held off long enough for the 2017 Fenestration Manitoba Golf Tournament held on Sept. 19. Over 50 industry representatives gathered at the St. Boniface Golf Course among the turning leaves and migrating Canada geese. The evening’s dinner acknowledged the day’s best (and least best) golfers. The winning team was Green Brand Home Energy Solutions, consisting of Anders Brandstrom, Pat Medd, Patrick Thibert and Logan Thibert, who all took home new pairs of golf shoes. The day’s highest scorers, and winners of golf lessons, were Al Dueck (Duxton Windows and Doors), Sean Kapusta (Hi-Tech Windows), Ted Paetkau

According to the Feed Nova Scotia website: “Our mission is to feed Nova Scotians in need and reduce that need. To achieve this, we distribute 2 million kilograms of donated food to our member network of 147 food banks and meal programs across the province.”

(Fenestration Components International) and Jayme Tilley (Screenco Manufacturing). There were no holesin-one on the 18th hole on this day, for which the prize was $25,000. Todd Toker had the longest drive of the day and Cory Toker won the putting contest, both of Collins-Toker Agencies, while Bill Weske of Sika Canada won the tee-guessing game.

The dinner was also the start of something new, honouring Roland Toker (pictured), of Collins-Toker Agencies, as the inaugural member of FenMan’s Founders Club.

“The real key point in this recognition of a builder is Roland’s role in spearheading the founding of this organization some 25 years ago,” said Al Dueck, past-president of Fenestration Manitoba, citing the organization’s very first outing to the Marvin Windows plant in Warroad, Minn., that Toker organized.

Said Toker earlier in the day, prior to tee-off, “The funny thing was that when we were loading the people on the bus, nobody knew each other. The industry was strange to each other. The owner of one company didn’t have an idea what the face of the next guy was. Since then, the tournament has brought people together and the competition knows each other.”

When asked if he was much of a golfer, Toker – who was wearing a lucky Bob Hope Classic pullover –downplayed his skill, saying, “You’ve got to remember, golf spelled backwards is flog. So I have days of flogging and days of golfing.”

COVER STORY

DOING IT WITH HEART

Employee engagement, innovation and quality on display at Atlantic Windows.

Don’t blink, or you might miss Port Elgin, N.B., population 450. For tourists, at least, it’s usually a blip on their way elsewhere. But if you do take the turn, you’ll find a small community that’s been at the crossroads of commerce in New Brunswick for hundreds of years.

Now it’s Atlantic Windows leading the charge from Main Street and a 120,000-square-foot facility. About 200 associates are putting together an ever-growing number of solid vinyl windows here for customers throughout Atlantic Canada, Bermuda and now in Ontario, too. Twenty minutes away in Amherst, N.S., the company has another 50 associates building entrance systems in a 44,000-square-foot space.

Growth has been the overwhelming theme here since 1984, when Alain Anctil turned Port Elgin’s old community centre into Atlantic Windows. Steve Smith bought the company in 1997, and that growth has just accelerated since. Over the past 20 years, the company has tripled its sales numbers and expanded by 120,000 square feet. It can also boast a number of firsts: the first window manufacturer to offer lifetime warranties in the Maritimes, the first to install a Lisec automated glass line in Canada, and the first to offer Energy Star windows in Atlantic Canada. In 2010, it also won the Crystal Achievement Award for Most Innovative Plant in North America.

So how did Atlantic Windows become so successful so rapidly? Well, over the course of a couple of hours in Port Elgin with company president (and Fenestration Canada board member), Greg Dickie, it becomes clear the answer has a whole lot to do with how the company treats its people, its customers and new ideas.

PEOPLE FIRST

The first strange thing you’ll notice on a tour of Atlantic Windows with Dickie is that he knows the first names of most of the 200 people who work

here. And it’s clear he didn’t just memorize those names before I arrive, as he exchanges jokes with many and even hugs one person.

“I used to work at General Motors in Oshawa as an engineer, where there was animosity between the staff and the people in the office. The atmosphere was strained,” he says. “At Atlantic it’s not like that. Our past president, Rob Miller, established a culture where every associate has a voice. He had an open-door policy, and I still believe in that philosophy today. The people working here are the experts, as they build our products every day. Many companies don’t realize this, they just say, ‘Do it this way.’ It’s amazing the creative ideas our people come up with.”

Exhibit A: A few years ago, the company introduced a new layout in one area to try to make manual window assembly more efficient. It wasn’t working for one associate in particular who had to walk an extra 20 feet at his station to keep the flow going. Dickie’s response: “You’re right. Why don’t we stay tonight and get that changed around?”

And so they did. “For me, I like it that if I have a stupid idea, tell me that I have a stupid idea,” says Dickie. “Don’t go behind my back. I want people to feel comfortable, and that just makes things more transparent and efficient.”

That respect extends to the hours Atlantic Windows asks their team to work: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the day shift; Monday to Thursday, 3:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. for the night shift. Good attendance is rewarded with paid time off if they don’t miss more than two hours per month.

This isn’t to say Atlantic Windows associates are

always happy, of course. Which is why they have an Associate Advisory Committee of nominated peers who meet with each associate every six months and then pass along their concerns or suggestions face-to-face with the president, the director of manufacturing and the human resources manager.

One suggestion a few associates made this spring was to plant a garden in an inner courtyard where they could grow vegetables, sell them to fellow associates and then donate the proceeds to the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. In just a few months, they’ve raised close to $1,000 to go along with nearly $260,000 the company has raised for the IWK over the past nine

years through golf tournaments, bake sales, 50/50 draws and more. Locally, Atlantic Windows also contributes to a range of different charities, and provides a $100 “fit credit” to every associate.

“It’s all about life-work balance here, not work-life balance,” says Dickie. “For us, it’s treating people like people, and that’s been a big reason why we’ve been so successful.”

NO FEAR OF FAILURE

Another big reason why they’ve been so successful is that they aren’t afraid of introducing new ideas or of failing, says Dickie. “That’s really our mantra around continuous improvement: try something. Don’t be

scared of failure. If you’re not trying, you’re not learning, and if you’re not learning, you’re not moving forward.”

Flow lines are a good example of something they’ve tried and had to tweak over the past 10 years. Before they were introduced, manual assembly tasks weren’t always balanced for each work station; one associate might have had three minutes of work at a time, while another might have had one minute of work. So, the team came up with a plan, and took it down to the floor to initially try with four associates.

“Some of the associates had some choice names for the new line. They were leery of our intentions to get them to work harder,”

It’s one of the happiest shop floors you’ll ever walk. President Greg Dickie and the rest of the management team have people working hard and liking it by taking a genuine interest in their ideas and well-being. From left - Julia Arsenault and Sue Walton

says Dickie with a laugh. “But right away we had a 40 per cent improvement, and the participants did not feel they worked any harder and actually felt better. We took the team upstairs to discuss their thoughts and work out some tweaks, and some of the naysayers became our biggest proponents. The next time we fired up the line, we had 12 people volunteering to be a part of it. So we could have taken a year to analyze, but you don’t get that buy-in until you get everybody involved. And you can solve problems a lot faster that way.”

What also helps, he says, is having an engaged owner in Steve Smith who continually invests in the business. In 2003 alone, he invested $1.6 million in a 30,000-square-foot expansion at the Port Elgin facility and $1.7 million in a Lisec automated glass line.

Dickie says the Lisec machine is “the heart that really pumps the blood through here.” Powered by two state-of-the art robots – one that places the spacer on the glass and another that puts a secondary seal all the way around the glass – it drastically increased their efficiency, offsetting 13 people per shift. “But nobody lost their

job; we placed those associates in other areas,” Dickie is quick to add. “No one has ever lost their job here over automation or Lean manufacturing, and we’re proud of that. And that just helps people realize that if we don’t do things like this, we’re going to get left behind.”

COMMITTING TO QUALITY

What’s also prevented Atlantic Windows from getting left behind is backing up their commitment to producing the very best products they can. “Commitment to quality – that’s always kind of a cliche, but for us we back it up with the lifetime warranties we have on most of our products,” says Dickie. “If you’re offering a lifetime warranty, including parts and labour, and servicing your warranty like we are, then you better back it up with good quality or you’ll be out of business.”

You’ll also be out of business if you’re not listening to your customers and paying attention to new trends or shifts in the market, he adds. Which is why, after talking to contractors and other customers like Kent Building Supplies (their largest customer), they’ve been expanding

paint operations here and in Amherst and making them more efficient. The new gasdriven paint booths they now use mean that a painted window will dry within two hours, as opposed to the previous four days.

Similarly, in response to a stagnating new construction market in the Maritimes a few years ago – and experiencing flatlining sales themselves – Atlantic Windows began targeting the renovation market. Their most significant move was to redesign a few of their windows so that it was much easier for contractors to replace old wood windows. Soon sales were trending upwards, and last year was the company’s best sales year ever.

Dickie is banking on that growth to continue as they dip their toe in Ontario, where the window and door renovation market alone is three times the entire window and door market in Atlantic Canada. This summer, they began an alliance with one of Canada’s largest window manufacturers, and through that partnership recently landed a contract with Mattamy Homes, North America’s largest privatelyowned home builder.

FINISHING TECHNOLOGY

THE FEELING GOES ON AND ON

Laminates offer texture, speed and durability as window lineal finishes.

Lamination can be a great finish option for windows. Laminate is a multi-layer construction of high-grade materials. It is constructed to ensure an extended resistance to weather conditions and colour stability. One of the greatest features of laminate is its scratchresistance. Also it is available in many different types of realistic woodgrain designs, as well as a multitude of solid colours and embossed finishes. Laminate is thin, with a final thickness of about nine to 10 microns, which makes it easy to join window components together and give detail to your window profile. Laminates, when damaged, can easily be repaired in the field with a repair kit. There is very little waste, as a typical run will require only two feet to be kept back for testing per AMMA standards and machine setups can re-use the same profile many times.

Lamination can only happen when the window profiles are in lineals. But do not worry – screen bar, aluminum and wood components can also be laminated. The biggest request for laminate is when the window manufacturer is selling a high volume of one or a few select colours. A profile can be laminated with

more than one colour option for the same price, thereby eliminating large inventories. The scratch-resistant coating on laminate is a bonus and helps reduce waste. But for a small additional charge, if requested by a customer, a laminate-friendly protective tape can be added by the machine.

Lamination is also ideal for projects. On average, lamination will cost 30 per cent less then paint, even when done in-house. Contract laminators will run your profiles, stack them neatly into carts or bags and have them ready for shipment back to your plant on a speedy timeline because the lamination process is much faster than paint.

The laminates available today on the market are of the highest quality and the most realistic woodgrains. There are also veneers and other stainable laminates that can be used on the interior of PVC windows to give a rich look that cannot be achieved by paint. They have UV protectors in them and scratch-resistant coatings. The stainable laminates available allow the manufacture to inventory PVC and laminate the interior without needing to stock real wood windows. Stainable laminate is very realistic and can be finished just like wood by the homeowner. Now your customer can use their window without the worry that the windows will chip, warp, rot or have cracking. Most of the time, people looking at the house do not even realize it’s not a real wood window.

Because wood can splinter and crack, painting a window will not cover these issues and will also require maintenance and re-application year after year. Laminates last for years and years.

Lamination performance has been documented for more than 35 years in the global market. In the eastern part of the world lamination is a highly respected trade requiring special schooling. Lamination and solvent paints are now very durable, flexible and heat-reflective compared to the products 10 years ago. The industry has come along way and in today’s market we can rest assured we are adding value and quality.

THE PROS

OF PAINTING

Paint coating satisfies needs for green, efficient window finishing.

The function of organic solvents in paint relates to certain properties. They facilitate the paint’s application, it’s drying and the formation of a regular paint film. During application and drying, the solvent evaporates. Ideally a dry paint film no longer contains solvent. However when they evaporate, these solvents release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere with a negative, toxic impact on health and safety and the environment. Spearheaded by (but not limited to) regulatory developments in the European Union, we continue to see stricter paint VOC regulations across the United States and Canada with the implementation of the Global Harmonization System. In terms of total VOC’s, 300 grams-per-liter paints are very common today. Presently, there is only one company within the industry with a product that has less than 30 grams per liter of total VOC’S. In response to recent federal, state and municipal regulations limiting the amount of VOCs, top-quality environmentally advanced paints have been introduced with increasingly lower levels of volatiles that still deliver the durability, beauty and performance of traditional coatings. Water -based environmentally advanced paints are safer to use. Clean-up is quick with warm water and because these paints incorporate innovative hybrid polymers, they are highly durable. Top-quality environmentally

advanced paints are available for indoor and outdoor application and come in different gloss levels and finishes. Now let’s talk about some of the health risks associated with a solvent. The most dangerous element in paint is pyrrolidone. N-Methylpyrrolidone, also known as NMP, acts as an adhesion promoter for PVC since it softens the vinyl and can affect the quality of the vinyl when the coat is too hard. NMP is a solvent (a liquid that dissolves solids). NMP has been proven to cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. It may also damage fertility and unborn children. NEP (N-Ethyl-Pyrrolidone) also contains pyrrolidone. NEP is slightly less toxic than NMP, although its toxicity level is still high.

By law, employers must provide a safe and healthy workplace using ventilation and other controls, with work practices to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals such as NMP. The best way to reduce exposure is to switch to a product that simply does not contain NMP. Some waterbased paint will still contain a certain level of NMP and NEP. Both are excellent additives. Both pose a serious harm to human health. Legislation continues to move towards restricted use of these. Companies increasingly want to move away from these chemicals or ingredients as a duty of care to their customers. Increasingly, companies have adopted a policy of eliminating the use of pyrrolidone their products. When in doubt, ask to

see the SDS sheet and look for the VOC content.

In order to keep up with the demand for more colours, woodgrain textures and other design options you need a product that offers a broader pallet to enhance your curb appeal without compromising paint hardness. The product should offer versatility in the ability to coat multiple substrates such as PVC and cellular PVC, fiberglass and pultruded fiberglass, aluminum, windows, doors, trim boards, siding, fencing and decking. With this capability you can eliminate the need to carry excess inventory of pre-painted components and the unnecessary hassle of colour matching. Essentially, you’re able to coat your products with the same paint.

Fifty years ago, virtually all paint was solvent-based. Today, advances in paint technology mean that modern, waterbased paints are increasingly replacing organic solvents across a broad range of paint applications and surface areas. Legislation pressure has led to increasing pressure on formulators to eliminate pyrrolidone solvents from their coatings. The move away from pyrrolidone solvents can be made successfully without compromising performance (adhesion, cross-linking properties) by increasing VOC’s.

Paint has become so versatile. There are environmentally safe solutions for all areas of your coating requirements from an infield manual spray to in house applications to high volume automation.

WinDoor 2017 will serve up all the education you can eat.

Following up on the momentum from last year’s jolt of energy in Montreal, Fenestration Canada has doubled down on 2017 WinDoor with a move to a new venue and a massive expansion to the education program. After a year’s hiatus, the association is hoping Ontario manufacturers and dealers will be excited to turn out to take in all the changes.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

First the venue shift. For the first time, WinDoor will be hosted at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ont. The move out of downtown will put the show less than 15 minutes’ drive away from the fenestration fabricating hotbed of Woodbridge, with easy access from several major highways and next door to Pearson airport.

CHOOSE YOUR STREAM

In accordance with its mission to be the industry’s education resource, Fenestration Canada has blown up the education program from a few single sessions per day into three full streams, each with four sessions per day. Attendees can choose sessions in the Technology, Codes and Standards; Business, Sales and Marketing; or Manufacturing and Operations streams.

The keynote event will take place across all streams on the Thursday morning. Debbie Scharf of Natural Resources Canada will outline the federal government’s plans for energy efficiency standards in fenestration going forward. Spoiler alert: they are tightening – a lot.

TECH TALK

Confirmed presentations in the Technology, Codes and Standards stream include an update on efforts to have PVC re-designated as a nonflammable fenestration material in the National Building Code.

Tracy Rogers of Keystone Certifications, Terry Adamson of Westek Windows and Doors, Mike Bruno of Everlast and Jeff Meursing of Intertek will lead an interactive discussion of whether or not the Canadian window and door industry

needs a standardized, third-party, national product certification program.

Louis Moreau of Agnora will share the experience of Canada’s largest-capacity glass fabricator and show how they have solved the problem of delivering big glass.

BETTER BUSINESS

In the Business, Sales and Marketing stream, human resources expert Michael Lobraico of N.C.I Solutions will join Mike Bruno of Everlast and Alex Shteriev of Beacon Brokerage (a mergers and acquisitions firm) for a panel discussion on succession planning.

Marketing experts Pascale-Anne Giguere and Stephane Labelle will join Fenestration Review editor Patrick Flannery for a discussion of what works and what doesn’t in B2B advertising and marketing communications in the fenestration industry.

CHECK YOUR PROCESS

In the Manufacturing and Operations stream, Fenestration Canada has assembled an architect, a residential developer, an interior designer and a construction specifier for the End User Panel. This interactive discussion represents a chance to get pretty much the most important information there is: what our customers want from us.

We’ve heard a lot about Lean manufacturing processes and how to implement them on the production floor. At WinDoor, Chad Metcalf of Value Stream Solutions will turn to the window and door supply chain and tell attendees how to streamline and remove waste from procurement and logistics processes.

Aluminum is making a comeback and many fabricators are struggling with the corner crimping process. Join Heinz Hunke, one of the owners of Pressta-Eisele and a pioneer in corner-crimping machinery design, for a session full of specific tips on how to get your corners perfect, faster.

It’s a huge program. Better bring the whole company.

Fenestration technology takes centre stage on the WinDoor 2017 show floor.

APPROVED FOR MID-RISE

BOOTH 115

everlast.biz

The Everlast Altitude Plus window series sets a higher standard for aluminum windows. This window features extruded aluminum profiles interior and exterior connected to a thermal insulation system called the Performance Core, representing the core of the window. The Performance Core is a new, proprietary, engineered material offering improved dimensional stability and higher deflection temperatures resulting in increased strength. Also featuring mitered corners assembled with gaskets and corner

keys all crimped together, this window series has achieved Energy Star certification. Low profiles make this an ideal window for today’s modern homes. Altitude Plus also meets the CW classification, meaning mid-rise buildings with institutional application. It provides the possibility of multiple assembly and opening configurations. Available in casement, awning or fixed window, combination windows may be achieved using either structural mullions with continuous frames or modular construction. The frame depth is 114 or 152 millimeters. The standard sash depth is 73 mm with a height of 44 mm and designed for 31-mm glazed units. Mullions are 116 mm deep.

VERTICAL INNOVATION

erdmanautomation.com

The Erdman high-speed Dura line produces IG vertically in a fashion that nearly doubles the speed of traditional vertical lines. Vertical production eliminates the need to tip a unit up to four times in the

production sequence, saving time, reducing injuries, qualifying more operators for service and minimizing breakage. Total labour for the Dura highspeed line is three to four operators per 1,000 units per shift instead of eight to 10 operators per 1,000 units on a traditional line. Speed comes along with other innovations and benefits including reduced floor space, reduced labour and a higher-quality product.

PREVENTS CONDENSATION

BOOTH 232 tgi-spacer.com

Technoform will showcase its

TGI-Spacer M with Wire spacer, which improves thermal and structural performance, reduces the risk of condensation and enhances the appearance of window systems for commercial, industrial and residential building applications. Supporting glazing manufacturers’ productivity and reliability goals, the optimized profile geometry and rigidity of the spacer provide durability and easier handling during fabrication. Featuring a hybrid composition, it is a cold-bendable, warm-edge spacer bar comprised of a thin, low-conductivity stainless steel, a spring steel wire and an engineered thermoplastic which provides minimal heat transfer and maximum protection against gas leakage and moisture penetration. TGI-Spacer’s hybrid technology combines the excellent seal durability and structural performance of a stainless steel box spacer with the thermal performance of a non-metallic spacer. Introducing the reinforcing steel wire provides improved

processing efficiencies and bent frame integrity without negatively impacting thermal performance. Thermally efficient building envelopes of today and tomorrow are critical to energy management, and TGI-Spacer M with Wire’s drop-in solution meets, or exceeds, the toughest industry expectations in all climates. By reducing the heat transfer at the edge of glass, our product helps minimize the risk of condensation on the interior glass surface, and improves thermal comfort for building occupants Available in six different colours, the spacer visibly improves sightlines.

DAKO is conquering new markets

DAKO is proud to announce the Bldg Shop as its new North American Distribution Partner.

An increased interest in DAKO’s offer on the international scene as well as constant development on various levels allows the brand to strengthen its activity in the new markets. The company has already entered a partnership with a Commercial Partner from Canada hoping for long-term, mutual benefits.

In the beginning it was not easy as the Canadian partner was looking for a brand which could provide it with top-shelf products for the demanding client who appreciates the highest quality and extraordinary design to sell DAKO aluminum products across Ontario. Currently, the company is also planning to open their showroom in Toronto.

We are aware of the fact that our offer is attractive with its high quality, that is why it was highly probable that the Canadian company will choose us as their business partner. Finally, the negotiations were successfully concluded as we signed the agreement on the exclusivity terms. The client has already purchased the products which will enrich his exhibition in Toronto. It will be a beautiful, spacious, top-shelf showroom. We are currently working on this order which includes, among others, big, prestigious glazing - the terrace sliding and corner aluminium doors. I also know that he adores our doors with the attachment panel and the sets of visually matched joinery - HarmonyLine says Alicja Biedunkiewicz, New Market Development Director.

The Bldg Shop with its extensive relationships with real estate developers, builders, and designers is the perfect fit

as DAKO partners to market and expand the brand’s presence in North America. The Bldg Shop has two showrooms and boasts a 60,000 square ft. logistic and warehousing facility to serve as our base for expanding our DAKO dealer network in North America. The partnership with a producer of high quality windows, roller blinds, doors and garage doors, gives us the opportunity to provide our clients with European, top-shelf solutions says Chris Sybidlo, the Bldg Shop representative.

Entering the partnership with the Bldg Shop gives DAKO the opportunity to present its products in North America and adapt the offer and other activities to the expectations and needs of Canadian clients.

Since 1994 DAKO has developed an unrivalled reputation for innovation, quality and workmanship as a manufacturer of a wide range of high-performance PVC, timber, aluminium and steel products that meet global clients’ needs.

The company’s growing success can be attributed to its continually modernized production process, cutting-edge technologies and continuous adaptation to changing client requirements.

ACCURATE AND EASY PAINTING

BOOTH 291

int-machinery.com

Painting windows has never been so easy. The Mauri Macchine (Giardina Group) spray machine 1VE-300-Eco is an optimal solution to coat of all kinds of extruded profiles such as vinyl windows, patio doors or aluminum window profiles. The system is comprised of an in-feed motorized roller conveyor with adjustable side guides; a closed compact-spray machine; and an out-feed motorized roller conveyor. The spray machine is complete with a front door and a suction fan with two stages of filters resulting in a safe and eco-friendly solution. The coating is applied by a group of four stationary spray guns, located inside the machine and mounted on adjustable supports to spray at any angle. The guns point downwards into a Teflon-coated stainless steel collecting tank mounted on castors for easy extraction and cleaning. The profile, while entering the spray area, is detected by a sensor that activates the spray guns and stops them once the profile is through. The machine can be equipped with an optional pressurizing system in order to push the overspray downwards into the collecting tank, so less cleaning is required. A special masking system

inside the spraying area permits only the desired area of the profile to be coated. All functions of the machine are managed by an electronic PLC together with a touchscreen interface. Big dimensions, high air flow and top-quality materials make the 1VE-300-Eco an heavy duty and long lifeexpectancy machine.
