A look into the technologies, services and solutions shaping the market

Offering Immediate Assistance to Individuals and Helping Quickly Assess Emergency Situations

Aiphone Corporation, a leading international manufacturer of intercom and entry security products, introduces the next generation of IP video intercoms with the release of the IS Series IP Video Intercom. Aiphone strengthens its reputation for unrivaled design simplicity, technical excellence and reliability in unveiling its first video intercom to combine traditional hardwired units with network direct devices.

The IS Series is a network-based communication and all-in-one security control system featuring video entry security, internal communication, rescue assistance, paging and bell/chime scheduling. The system can unlock doors remotely on a network, assist onsite visitors from an offsite phone, broadcast emergency announcements and communicate using a standard or PC Master Station.

The IS Series allows users to identify or help individuals from another location – whether just next door, across town or on the other side of the world. The system increases staff efficiency by controlling various entrances from a central location and can easily transfer responsibilities to another location or individual. School districts, businesses or multi-building facilities can improve efficiency and decrease costs with centralized security and communication from the IS Series.

With the IS Series, Aiphone has provided all the features and capabilities distinct to the Aiphone brand, and with increased integration and scalability. One of the IS Series’ most valuable and effectual features is its ability to connect multiple schools or buildings within a district or campus, allowing individuals to identify visitors from one school or campus building to another. By installing video door stations at entrances, K-12 and higher education institutions, alike, can maintain security all day on campus and keep doors

locked while safely identifying visitors.

In emergency situations, announcements can be made from any office on the network. Should a problem arise in the community or campus, multiple schools and buildings in the vicinity may be quickly alerted to external threats. Monitoring individuals are able to communicate with classrooms or exterior buildings because a room station and an overhead speaker allow for easy communication between offices and faculty around the school, campus or district.

Aiphone’s IS Series Rescue Assistance Stations are used to offer immediate assistance to individuals and to help quickly assess emergency situations.

Manufactured to be integrated with CCTV systems, the IS Series Rescue Assistance Stations meet the latest ADA regulations and requirements including station lettering, Braille signage, a call status indicator light, a call button mounting height on towers, and the thinnest mounting box available. The IS Series features a 170° wide angle camera with PanTilt and Zoom control from the master station, capturing a larger viewing area and ability to zoom in for greater detail.

Aiphone’s modular design allows for maximum flexibility with 2-module or 3-module towers, quick and easy assembly, and are available in a variety of configurations and colors to suit any application.

The Keys to Success for Campus Security

Security providers are well aware of the unique set of security and safety circumstances on college and university campuses. The individualized needs of each campus – urban, suburban, or rural; small or large; multi-campus or single-campus – must be balanced against strict financial limits. As the demand for campus public safety services rises under rapidly changing revenue landscapes, it is crucial that security partners develop their ability to deliver effective solutions without compromising critical services.

Security technology plays a great role in the safety and security of students, administrators and property in a campus environment. Educational environments are under a tremendous amount of pressure to do more with less, and are always looking for ways to meet their safety obligations while managing strict budgetary requirements. A strategic investment in technology provides campus security teams with the ability to cover more ground more effectively, such as with intelligent actionable video using analytics. From a control centre, one officer can effectively direct field officers to potential hotspots before they escalate into costly incidents of mischief or worse. From an initial small investment, significant returns can be realized, thus demonstrating the value of a comprehensive security solution.

tion should be aware that accreditation represents a professional standard against which any college law enforcement or security operation might be judged, such as in a court case.

The importance of comprehensive and specialized training cannot be emphasized enough. Training oriented towards basic services like safety escorts can be included as part of the lesson plans of a larger departmental training program. This course content might take an hour or less of training time, and should be followed by role play and/or field training with a senior officer, or a combination of both. The basics of safety escorts could be included in a self-study module to be used with a learning management system but should be followed up with additional field training. While professional training for a department’s safety escort staff might not garner the same mind share as active shooter or mass notification training, it should not be ignored.

Delivery of core safety services directly impacts a security department’s reputation, its perceived professionalism and, ultimately, its support from the top level of the institution. Building a department’s reputation begins with getting the little things right. Without this foundation, security departments will never have the support to implement the large programs they need.

A key part of effectively delivering a campus security solution is getting the basics right. Safety escorts, for example, are among the most used security services on college and university campuses. Escorting students and other clients safely to their destination represents a significant proportion of interactions with security personnel. As such, safety escorts are a good opportunity to build an image of professionalism and to further the mission of community policing, which depends on cooperation and communication among campus police, security personnel and members of the campus community. If poorly managed, safety escorts can undermine an entire department’s credibility and reputation, and possibly compromise overall safety and security goals.

Proper management of safety escorts is also a factor for campus public safety agencies seeking IACLEA (International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators) accreditation. Even campuses that are not pursuing accredita-
