Didactische gids voor een brede blik in geschiedenisonderwijs

In het geschiedenisonderwijs in Vlaanderen wordt nog al te vaak een eurocentrisch perspectief gehanteerd. Dit eurocentrisch denken stelt voorop dat de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen in de wereldgeschiedenis te vinden zijn in de evolutie van de Europese en Westerse wereld, en gebruikt het Westen als maatstaf om andere beschavingen te beoordelen. De eurocentrische blik is het resultaat van de polariserende wig die vanaf het begin van de Europese koloniale expansie werd gedreven tussen the West and the rest.

Een eurocentrisch denkkader is uiterst problematisch. Het belemmert een genuanceerde historiografische blik om vanuit verschillende perspectieven historisch te denken. Daarnaast dreigt ook de onwetendheid over andere culturen de vorming van een superioriteitsgevoel over de eigen geschiedenis te bevorderen. Dit derde volume in de reeks Historisch denken presenteert inhoudelijk-didactische alternatieven en toont hoe eurocentrisme kan worden overstegen. Case studies over Chinees-Westerse en Belgisch-Congolese geschiedenis maken dit concreet.

Eurocentrisch denken voorbij is een aanrader voor geschiedenis­leerkrachten en historici en al wie geïnteresseerd is in de relatie tussen Westerse en nietWesterse geschiedenis en in denken over cultuur en cultuurverschillen.

Maarten Couttenier is historicus en antropoloog, actief binnen het departement menswetenschappen van het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika, sectie Geschiedenis en Politiek.

Nicolas Standaert is sinoloog aan de KU Leuven. Zijn onderzoeksdomein omvat de culturele uitwisseling tussen China en Europa in de 17de en 18de eeuw.

Karel Van Nieuwenhuyse is als hoofddocent geschiedenisdidactiek coördinator van de Specifieke Lerarenopleiding Geschiedenis aan de KU Leuven. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op historisch denken in geschiedenisonderwijs.

Wegwijs in de geschiedenis van het informatielandschap en in de belangrijkste tekstgenres

“Civilization may die of suffocation, choked in its own plethora of print”, zo waarschuwde een Amerikaans bibliothecaris in 1944. Hij was niet de eerste. Dit boek handelt over de eeuwenoude worsteling van informatiezoekers om een immer dreigend teveel aan informatie beheersbaar en ontsluitbaar te maken. Het is een geschiedenis waarin vernieuwing doorgaans aanwreef tegen conservatisme en doemdenkerij.

Zo hekelden wetenschapsbeoefenaars al in de zeventiende eeuw encyclopedieën omdat die mensen schijnslim zouden maken.

Daarnaast toonden beoefenaars van de geesteswetenschappen zich vaak technofoob en bleven ze lang het papieren boven het digitale informatielandschap verkiezen. De laatste jaren is die situatie echter geëvolueerd. Dit boek wil dan ook een kompas zijn voor beide landschappen. Bovendien wil het hulp bieden om een weg te vinden in de veelheid van academische, populairwetenschappelijke, journalistieke en digitale documenttypes en tekstgenres.

Van blokdruk tot blog is het eerste Nederlandstalige werk dat een kritische blik werpt op de geschiedenis van het papieren en digitale informatielandschap, én tegelijkertijd de belangrijkste tekstgenres in kaart brengt.

Omgaan met digitale data in de geesteswetenschappen

Als onderzoeker of student in de geesteswetenschappen werk je vandaag in een omgeving waarin je slechts enkele muisklikken bent verwijderd van miljoenen teksten, beelden en geluidsopnames uit bibliotheken, archieven en databanken overal ter wereld. Je vindt daarnaast ook vlot je weg naar talloze blogs, tweets, onderzoekspapers en andere digitale publicaties. Deze overvloed aan data, ook wel ‘big data’ genoemd, biedt ongekende mogelijkheden, maar brengt ook een aantal uitdagingen met zich mee. Hoe bepaal je bijvoorbeeld welk materiaal relevant is voor jouw specifieke project? En welke onderzoeksvragen moet je stellen als je met een algoritme duizenden teksten kan doorzoeken? Om het maximum te kunnen halen uit de heterogene en vaak grote gegevensverzamelingen die vandaag voorhanden zijn, heb je gespecialiseerde kennis en vaardigheden nodig. Dit boek wil daarbij helpen. In 2016 vierde de Dienst Onderzoekscoördinatie van de Leuvense universiteit zijn dertigste verjaardag. Nieuw nummer van het tijdschrift Nieuwe Tijdingen Aan de populariteit van de historische biografie lijkt maar geen einde te komen. Ieder jaar weer verschijnen er tal van nieuwe levensbeschrijvingen van vroegmoderne vorsten, staatslieden, kunstenaars en drukkers. Doorgaans zijn het klassieke, chrono­ logisch geordende levensbeschrijvingen, stevig ingebed in de historische context, tot tevreden­heid van de meeste recensenten en lezers. Echter, enige kritische reflectie op de bio­grafische methode ten aanzien van figuren uit de vroegmoderne tijd ontbrak tot nu toe in de Lage Landen. Deze uitgave wil hiertoe een kritische bijdrage leveren en houdt de heden­daagse biografische methodes goed tegen het licht. De auteurs in dit volume verkennen de (on)mogelijkheden van de dominerende, klassiek chronologisch geordende levensbeschrijvingen over personen uit de vroegmoderne tijd, en staan daarnaast ook stil bij de historische context, de verhouding fictie versus feit, en ten slotte bij het schrijf­proces zelf.

Nieuwe Tijdingen. Over vroegmoderne geschiedenis neemt de lezer mee naar het vervlogen verleden van de vijftiende tot en met de achttiende eeuw. Iedere uitgave richt zich op een recente ontwikkeling in het historisch onderzoek naar deze schakelperiode. Daardoor komen verrassende thema’s aan bod: van sacrale ruimte tot publieksgeschiedenis, van handelsnetwerken tot lobbypraktijken, van festiviteiten tot onderwijsinstellingen. Geïnteresseerden in de vroegmoderne tijd worden zo geprikkeld door toegankelijk geschreven bijdragen, terwijl vakgenoten in deze aan peer review onderworpen artikelen de laatste stand van het onderzoek kunnen consulteren.

Les Gouverneurs-généraux des Pays-Bas espagnols du dix-septième siècle bénéficiaient du conseil de leur confesseur. Ce directeur spirituel, issu du clergé régulier, tint un rôle significatif dans l’organisation du pouvoir politique bruxellois.

Cette étude, qui couvre la période courant des archiducs Albert et Isabelle jusqu’au dernier Gouverneur-général issu de la famille royale, soit les années 1598 à 1659, propose, pour la première fois, une approche transversale de la fonction. L’auteur démontre que ces religieux furent souvent impliqués dans des questions politiques et courtisanes de première importance. En exposant combien les parcours individuels de ces religieux furent singuliers, Pierre-François Pirlet souligne également le polymorphisme de leur action. Enfin, ce volume met en évidence les liens étroits qu’entretinrent ces conseillers avec la Couronne espagnole, les autorités ecclésiastiques et les membres de la cour de Bruxelles.

The Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining region, bordering on Belgium, is part of northern Europe’s historical centre of heavy industry, which extends as far as the Ruhr area in Germany. With the end of coal mining in the 1980s, the Lille region transitioned to new economic activities, particularly within the cultural and creative industries, taking advantage of its strategic location midway between Paris, London and Brussels. After de-industrialisation and the 1984 opening of the Lewarde Mining Museum – the first institution of its kind in France – the region took part in industrial heritage campaigns modelled on the Ruhr industrial region. Various historical sites in coal-mining areas in this region and in Belgium were classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2012.

Organised around eight groups of a varying numbers of photographs, Renaissance (2014) presents a photographic analysis of the epochal transition from industry to culture and leisure economies. It sheds a light on the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining region’s place in the European history of the capitalist nation-state.

The artist, Jorge Ribalta, offers a contribution to the critique on the myths and utopian promises of cultural economies. His photographic work interrogates the correspondence between the decline of industrial economies in Europe and the crisis of the middle class.

Jorge Ribalta is an artist, researcher, editor, and independent curator. He lives and works in Barcelona.

Despite the ubiquitous presence of photographic humor in art and popular media, the phenomenon has as yet received very little scholarly attention.

Focusing on staged humor rather than on comic effects of snapshot photography, this volume brings together leading scholars in the field addressing humor performed in front of the camera, often specifically created for the camera, and the performative joke-work done by the medium itself. A first section explores how photography, due to its “shattering” qualities, turns into a privileged medium for eliciting humorous effects and how humor can be discerned within the photographic event. A second section discusses the toolbox of photographic trickery (photomontage, double exposure and cinematic movement) that allows photography to mock itself. The book closes with a section on photographic wit in conceptual art, both in canonized and more locally distinct practices.

Church leaders and their contrasting opinions in the face of the Great War

Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, Archbishop of Malines, was the incarnation of the Belgian resistance against the German occupation during the First World War. With his famous pastoral letter of Christmas 1914 ‘Patriotisme et Endurance’ he reached a wide audience, and gained international influence and respect.

Mercier’s distinct patriotic stance clearly determined his views of national politics, especially of the ‘Flemish question’, and his conflict with the German occupier made him a hero of the Allies. The Germans did not always know how to handle this influential man of the Church. Pope Benedict XV did not always approve of the course of action adopted by the Belgian prelate. Whereas Mercier justified the war effort as a just cause in view of the restoration of Belgium’s independence, the Pope feared that “this useless massacre” meant nothing but the “suicide of civilized Europe”.

Through a critical analysis of the policies of Cardinal Mercier and Pope Benedict XV, this book sheds revealing light on the contrasting positions of Church leaders in the face of the Great War. Jan De Volder is a Belgian historian. Currently, he occupies the Cusanus Chair ‘Religion, Conflict and Peace’ of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies of the University of Louvain (KU Leuven). He has a special interest in church and religion during World Wars I and II.

Considering the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between gender relations and migration, the contributions in this book approach migration dynamics from a gender-sensitive perspective. Bringing together insights from various fields of study, it is demonstrated how processes of social change occur differently in distinct life domains, over time, and across countries and/or regions, influencing the relationship between gender and migration. Detailed analysis by regions, countries, and types of migration reveals a strong variation regarding levels and features of female and male migration. This approach enables us to grasp the distinct ways in which gender roles, perceptions, and relations, each embedded in a particular cultural, geographical, and socioeconomic context, affect migration dynamics. Hence, this volume demonstrates that gender matters at each stage of the migration process. In its entirety, Gender and Migration gives evidence of the unequivocal impact of gender and gendered structures, both at a micro and macro level, upon migrant’s lives and of migration on gender dynamics.

For the last 180 years, scientists have been attempting to determine the ‘provenance’ (geological source) of the copper used in Bronze Age artefacts. However, despite advances in analytical technologies, the theoretical approach has remained virtually unchanged over this period, with the interpretative methodology only changing to accommodate the increasing capacity of computers. This book represents a concerted effort to think about the composition of Bronze Age metal as the product of human intentionality as well as of geology. It considers the trace element composition of the metal, the alloying elements, and the lead isotopic composition, showing how a combination of these aspects, along with archaeological context and typology, can reveal much more about the life history of such artefacts, expanding considerably upon the rather limited ambition of knowing where the ore was extracted.

Beyond Provenance serves as a ‘how-to handbook’ for those wishing to look for evidence of human intentionality in the chemical patterning observed in bronzes.
