Makeup Editor Lisa Precious shares her tips on how to use foundation primer

O

www.lisaprecious.co.uk

ctober is upon us and as we say farewell to the Season of Sun kissed skin and freckles, it is time to welcome in the Autumn with just a touch more coverage. So out goes the tinted moisturiser and on goes your primer, but which one should you choose?

No longer just a base for your foundation, they are now clever little formulations that refine open pores, create light effects, moisturise, protect and even out the skin.

Here are my top picks.... Mac Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 35, £21

What is there not to love about this product? It delivers just about everything to the skin, lightly tinted in a sheer beige tone, it will work for most complexions, it then goes on to being a colour perfector and face primer with the added bonus of a whopping UVA/UVB SPF 35 defence and even then smoothes out lines and lightly moisturises to work as the perfect primer for your foundation. A 5 star product .

Benefit that gal Brightening Face Primer, £21.50

This pretty pink tinted primer suits all skin tones and can be worn alone, under or over make up, containing raspberry and chamomile, combined with sweet almond and algae extracts, this product helps to retain moisture in the skin and light reflecting pigments brighten the complexion for a healthy glow.

Estee Lauder Idealist Pore Minimising Skin Refinisher, £38 Not exactly a primer but an amazing product that is used underneath moisturiser, it refines enlarged pores and makes skin feel so smooth that you will immediately see a more even skin tone. This product also contains 3x more glycosamine than the previous formula to help your skin create fresher cells to the surface. Mulberry and scutellaria extracts help to fade dark spots and discolouration.

Marks and Spencer Perfection Illusions Perfect Face Primer, £12 Good old trusty Marks and Spencer do some fantastic affordable skin care and make up. This no fuss primer leaves skin nourished, soft and smooth.

Accessorize

How to a e k i l s s e r d a t s i n o i h s a F Flamboyant? Not always. Designer Labels? Not necessarily. Our new Fashion Editor, Samantha Barker gives you her tips on how to keep bang on trend....

o dress like a fashionista you don’t need huge amounts of money, it is about having your own confident, developed sense of style and making ‘clever’ purchases - it is about how you’re wearing that top not which person the top is designed by. A simple rolling of the sleeve can reveal a lot about a person’s expression of self through the clothes they wear, skin adornments such as make-up and jewellery and their hair style. If you don’t have or don’t think you have a sense of style then following the next few steps will help you engage confidently with clothing as part of your personality: a way to communicate and assert yourself within everyday social interaction. 14 | anne louise October 2011

Have fun

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, experiment by wearing an outfit you wouldn’t normally wear to see a best mate and test their reaction.

Do you feel comfortable?

There is a difference between being safe and being comfortable. Safe is boring, it can be appropriate to be ‘safe’ for a job interview and going to a funeral, but no one wants to look back on their life and think I was ‘safe’. However, being comfortable is important, as this is what will give you confidence and yes , if the mood takes me, I feel comfortable in heels, especially my 3 inch high wedge ankle booties (if needed, I can even run in them!).

Know your assets

You need to know what your assets are, again, close friends, especially ones who have style you admire will give you honest advice on what your assets are. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, then another option can be to go to in-store stylists seen in many high street stores across the UK and making note of what cuts and shapes they put you in. Once your assets have been established, you will feel much more confident as a shopping fashionista.

Inspiration

Once you have started to experiment with clothing it is now time to look for inspiration. Being a fashionista does not mean being a one carrot stick a day, champagne consuming icy maiden, you can be nice and be part of fashion too. Yes the fashion industry can be ruthless and indulge the superficial, fickle and materialistic in all of us but actually some of my favourite fashion designers and stylists are very down to earth and very much in love with their craft. Yohij Yamamoto is a true fashion genius and is known for valuing his staff and having a genuine integrity to his clothing – he is my inspiration. I also love looking at Susie Lau’s website www.stylebubble.com for inspiration and tips, her love of fashion is relentlessly motivating and the fact that she doesn’t take herself too seriously is a plus.

‘Clever’ purchases

Charity shops are fantastic for allowing experimentation of creating style and figuring what you feel confident and comfortable in not just purely because of the low cost, but also because of the potential array of ‘gems’ under one roof. However, be clever, don’t go buying someone else’s trash, even if you are spending a £1, it needs to make sense to your style. Full priced clothing is expensive and unless you are lucky enough to have Philip Green (owner of Topshop) as your dad, then choosing clothing carefully can mean you are making investments that you can re-use next season. It is enjoyable to take part in trends, but to be led by them is expensive and shows a lack of style. Buying 2/3/4 pieces, such as pair of shoes in this season’s trend of colour/ pattern/ material and teaming that with clothing you already have in your wardrobe reveals a clever and confident buyer. You will be admired.

Be confident in being you

Part of having style is about being comfortable with yourself, not everyone is going to like what you wear, I guarantee it. You will know that you are a particular success amongst fellow fashionistas if they look like they are staring into space when you walk past them. They are actually using their peripheral vision to the max, scrutinising everything you are wearing. It is a compliment and means they have accepted you as a fellow lady of fashion.

Pretend you are J.Lo

If all else fails, pretend you are Jennifer Lopez and mutter my mantra ‘don’t be a pleaser, be a leader’. Confidence can be confusing, and will mean that most people will give you the benefit of the doubt even if your clothing is a bit more nonsensical mess than sophisticated fashion.

Fashion River Island

Autumn Mists

Get ready to indulge yourself this autumn with sumptuous clarets and burgundies mixed with tweeds, furs and feathers. The shops are marking the end of the bright, playful summer with earthy clothes that have a hint of masculinity about them: loose trousers in muddy browns, severe greys and rusty reds; flat shoes and chunky boots; expensive cloths layered with hardwearing tweed and decadent furs; and unashamedly clashing colours. River Island’s A/W collection includes sharp trousers and double-breasted jackets that can be combined with fake furs for an androgynous look that taps into another trend, that of mixing textures – the more the merrier. Marks and Spencer shows how to mix it up with its fluffy, deep orange coat draped over a gold velvet dress finished with a patchwork of contrasting sequins. For a more feminine approach to autumn there are plenty of dresses inspired by the 1940s that perfectly complement the many tweed coats available, as can be seen at F&F at Tesco. Printed fabrics are everywhere, from birds to flowers to butterflies (New Look has piles of pretty printed dresses to choose from), with a big sub-trend proving to be dots. Lots of them. Our current favourite, however, is Matalan’s very sweet dotted dress – snap it up now before it sells out.

Mother & Baby Bringing you the latest information for mums and mums to be..... By Farah Hughes

T

he experience of swimming with your baby is a very special time for both of you, helping to create a closer bond. Nature ensures that babies are introduced to water even before birth! So swimming from birth, enjoying splashful smiles together, is one of the most natural gifts life has to offer. The Water Babies programme has been designed to teach water confidence and safety skills. ‘With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object,’ comments Paul Thompson, co-founder of Water Babies. ‘And it’s so important that they do. Within the last three years, ten of our children nationally saved themselves from drowing despite five of them only being two.’ The classes are full of fun for all, with friendly helpful staff. One of their core philosophies is that they’re teaching you to teach your baby to swim, so they’ll always explain why they’re doing everything, as well as carefully demonstrate exactly what to do. Water Babies

20 | anne louise October 2011

also advise one to start enjoying having fun with water with bathtimes. Lay your baby lay in shallow warm water, turning them onto their tummy as they get older. They’ll love the unique sense of freedom that kicking and splashing in the water gives them! Water Babies has been supporting Tommy’s Splashathon since 2006, a strong and ever growing charity that exists to help raise funds towards research on the causes and prevention of miscarriage, still birth and premature birth. Nationally smashing this year’s target of £100,000, as at 26th July they had raised an astonishing £200,000 and totals are still running fast! For every parent that wishes to provide their child with survival knowledge, whilst also having an amazing experience together, Water Babies is the way forward.

At Music Bugs, their aim is not to teach music, but to allow and encourage young children to develop, grow and explore the world around them through music and song. Participation in music and singing classes is a great way for your child to socialise and develop in a creative and stimulating environment. IRISH POP SINGER HAVANA SET TO BECOME LATEST ‘STRUCTURED REALITY’ TV STAR Irish pop artist Havana who is currently at number 9 in the Music Week Club Charts and riding high in the top ten of the Dance Music Charts is set to follow in the footsteps of stars from shows such as ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ and ‘Geordie Shore’ after being chosen to appear in a brand new series. ‘Cokobar - The Reality Show’ which is set to air on BET (Sky 191 and Freesat 140) will follow the Dublin-born singer on her hectic schedule of media commitments and performances around London and will document the trials and tribulations of a career in showbiz. Havana’s music has been described as modern dance with a Latin flavour and with a recent performance on ITV’s This Morning, a recent appearance on Channel 4’s Freshly squeezed and a sexy video shot in Marbella; Havana is set to be a must have for any summer playlist.

“Filming on the new show starts in September and should provide music fans with a real insight into my life and music,” says Havana. “There’s never a dull moment when I’m in the studio, preparing to perform or doing interviews and Cokobar - The Reality Show will capture every moment.”

What’s the story behind your stage name and is Havana your real name?

Is there a musician who inspired you to become a musician?

Havana isn’t my real name but I thought it encapsulated all that I was about! When I visited Cuba there was so much musical life on the streets and I thought Havana was appropriate for an Irish Girl with The Latin Spirit.

I don’t think there is any one musician but I love Prince, Gloria Estefan, Bruce Springsteen, Shakira and John Legend to name a few.

I understand Paul Costello has a hand in making your costumes. Lucky lady how did you get his attention? Yes Paul Costelloe came on board and designed the perfect Premiere dress-it helped that I was Irish and that’s where Paul is from and he knew a bit about my background and he loves cricket having designed the England ladies cricket team’s blazers, and agreed to do it! I was thrilled. What is your motivation behind Havana’s sound – and what do you hope the listener will experience? My music is Pop with Latin and Urban influences. Hopefully the Latin flavour will help me stand out.. I grew up listening to all types of music but that Latin Sound really drove me to want me to wan to be an artist like Gloria Estefan and Jenifer Lopez. Tell me how you met Elton John or how did you get his attention? I heard that Elton was playing in my hometown in Irealnd, so immediately I contacted the promoter and blagged my way on to the bill. It was tough but I sent through my CD and they went for it! I understand you’ve been involved in a recent film soundtrack which meant you re-recorded True with 80s pop legend Tony Hadley. Were you in the same recording studio what was it like working with him? (Have you seen the film?) Working with Tony Hadley was an amazing experience. I was so nervous on the first day in the studio—he was co-producing the track-so he stayed awhile, I did my vocals but I have to say it was a pleasure to work with him. I went on to do This Morning on ITV show at the end of May and we had to perform live, he put me at ease and I was delighted musical legend like me took me under his wing!

32 | anne louise october 2011

What inspires your music is it: love, people you know, your family? I knew I loved the stage from a very early age. I was put into stage school at 3 and since then all I ever wanted to sing and dance..it’s a bonus if you can make it your career. What was your inspiration for writing Dance Like That? I wrote Dance Like That whilst on holiday—the Spanish vibe is clear in there and Sun and Sea inspire me—with a little romance of course How do you write your songs… does it start from sound or an emotion? Most start from sound and chorus-but when I write a ballad—its always emotion first like a poem then I try to build the melody around that What criterion for you makes a good tune? I think you just know you have the right tune. It can come from anywhere I understand you are a trained dancer but you’ve had a nasty accident can you tell me about that and how you’ve overcome the disability of it? Yes dancing is part of my show and my horse riding accident put me out for a while but it gave me time to think and get strong again You’ve been working with top names in the industry (Pete Hammond to name drop a few) but what do you think about the state of British pop music at the moment? You know what – Pop has completely changed. We have re mixed Dance like That 7 times times to get the sound hard enough for the current market. If it is not dance influenced they wont play it.

What have you learnt most about being a musician? I have learned that it is an extremely hard business but if you put the right people around you then you can do it. Can you tell me about any difficulties you have had in realising your dream as a musician and how you have overcome them? I could be here all day if I went in to it. But all I can say is if I knew a year ago what I know now it would have saved me a lot of hassle. Do you have partner; has following you’re dream as a musician had an impact on them? I have a boyfriend who lives in Ireland and it has been so hard on us. I fly back to Ireland every single weekend just to see him. It will get harder as I am getting busier but will manage it. When you were starting out what kind of job did you have to do to make ends meet? I worked in a bank/ clothes/stables etc, anything I could think of and Oh I was also a lifeguard at one stage! How do you deal with nerves before a performance?

Where do you live now? I am currently living in London but commute back to cork every week. What music did your parents listen to when you were growing up and has this affected your style or inspired your music? My parents listened to everything, so therefore I enjoy all genres of music Did you have any musical instruments to play on growing up at home? I had piano and tin whistle lessons Who were your music teachers? I have had a lot- but my vocal coach Josh , who I am currently working with is the best I have come across. He can make anyone sound amazing fact!! His technique and presence makes music exciting!!! Especially when he enables you to push yourself to the limit. How did you find out about your voice? Ever since I was in stage school I had been auditioning and that is where I learned I could sing.

I’m normally good and then 5 minutes before I panic but its nice feel like that as nerves give off great adrenaline What’s your current favourite Havana song you like to perform live? Dance Like That is my favourite to be fair but I have one or two up my sleeve that I think you will love Can you tell me some background information about yourself – what’s the town like that you grew up in? In Ireland I went under my own name which is Carol Anthony. I had a few hits there and have a very loyal fan base who have given me great support from the start. I’m from Cork City but moved to Dublin when I signed to Universal Music and Dublin became my second home
