Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the March issue of Anne Louise. I’ve been publishing my own magazine now for just over a year and every issue has been a labour of love. I’ve enjoyed talking to new and established businesses, finding out the ups and downs of being self employed and hearing from you, the readers on what you love about the magazine. One thing that always amazes me to learn is that many businesses and readers think the magazine is published by a big company, with lots of people working away in an office somewhere in Lincolnshire! The truth couldn’t be more different, I run the magazine from home in my own little office, mostly with Tiggy curled up asleep on my lap! I have a few feature writers, including my beautiful sister Adele, helping me promote businesses with product reviews. You will often see me running around during torrential rain, thick snow and icy winds distributing the magazine to my lovely distributors. Also helping are my boyfriend and Dad who deliver further afield. I’m always happy to hear from readers and businesses so please feel free to drop me a line and let me know about anything and everything!

“I am always looking to

inspire and interest with the designs I create.” Jayne Elwell, designer and founder of The Libertarian became bored with the mass produced, anti-ethical, bad quality products that the high street was producing. So in protest she started The Libertarian. Interview Adele Robinson

Jayne at Ascot So Jayne..tell us a little about how you started? and where the idea of ‘The Libertarian’ began? You could say the idea stemmed from when I was at University. I got a job reworking clothes for a vintage shop and around that time me and some friends set up a little stall in Oxford to sell our creations. We didn’t stick with the stall for long but it was those experiences that lead me towards wanting to design and start my own business. When I graduated I had really become sick of the high street re-producing the same designs and so I wanted my business to be about freedom of design, hence the name. And is this something you always knew you would like to do? Not exactly but I have always had an interest in design. Growing up I always wanted to be an actress, a dancer, an artist or a fashion designer and funnily enough I’m still involved in all of these activities. It has really been a case of experimenting in lots of different areas that has brought me to this point. I must admit it had never crossed my mind that I would be designing hats, but I am so happy that I am. What changes have you made and how has the business developed since you started? When I originally started in 2007 I was making all sorts of things such as home-wear, Screen printing T-shirts and jewellery. The first piece of headwear I made was an oversized head bow, it was before anyone else was doing them so I really didn’t think anyone would dare to wear one, but they were a hit and a month later they hit the high street. Tell us a little about the process...how long does it take for you to complete each piece? If I am working on a commission I will discuss with the client and then make some initial sketches for us to talk 6 | anne louise march 2011

about. However if I am designing for my ready to wear collections I sometimes work straight from the idea in my head. Some items have to be done in stages over a number of days such as the icing and cherry hat, while others can be made in one sitting over a number of hours. Have you got a favourite creation? I am finding that I am pretty enthusiastic about a lot of the work I am producing at the moment however for sentimentality I would say the Magpie hat I wore to Ascot this year. I decided I was going to make them in advance and bought my outfit accordingly. I am superstitious and I hoped that they would bring me luck. However in the busy run up to Ascot I had to leave them until last, which left me only a day. I managed to pull it off and made them completely from scratch so was very pleased with the reaction they got. And if you could design for any celebrity who would it be and why? Lady GaGa would be fantastic because I could let my imagination get truly carried away. You have such a wonderful range of designs where do you get your inspiration? Absolutely everywhere. Design is always at the back of my mind so I am constantly taking in inspiration from everything and processing it into designs. From trips to the supermarket to watching burlesque shows. I must admit I am a great lover of period dramas and films set in the past- which has a heavy influence on my work at the moment. I also find that doing creative work also generates more ideas. Sadly I don’t have enough time to work on all of my ideas instantly so I have a long to do list.

You also do bespoke made to order designs...what’s the craziest request you have ever had? And have you ever had to decline an idea?(and why?) I have a good friend that is a burlesque performer (Constance Peach) and she simply requested a crazy hat with a tropical theme, so I created a realistic looking slice of tropical cake complete with cake fork! I also had a commission to create some flashing nipple pasties for burlesque performer Tobi James, which was a lot of fun. I have never turned down a request and hope that I would never have to. I could only see it happening if the technicalities were not possible- but if this was the case then I would work to find an alternative that the customer was happy with. I love a good challenge so I’m happy to take on almost anything! You must have a very busy schedule....do you ever have any time to yourself? (and how do you like to spend your spare time?) Yes I do have a busy schedule and regularly work 14 hr days when I have a lot of orders on. However I enjoy it all so much that it often doesn’t seem like work. I make an effort to take time off when I can as I work through most weekends but I go to a weekly acting class and I’ve just taken up pole dancing classes which are both great fun and they are completely separated from my business so I can switch off and focus something different. I do also love going to the cinema, theatre, burlesque shows, visiting art galleries and eating out. However one of my favourite things to do is simply dressing up and going for nights out with my friends. And finally Jayne what are your plans/dreams for the future? Eventually I would love to open a little shop to sell my designs in the north of England somewhere, but in the immediate future I’m hoping to create some fantastic show stopping hats for the races next year. One of possitives of having my own business is that I can take it in any direction I want, so the next year could really take me anywhere.

Acupuncture: release your qi

Peter working on Susan Susan has had painful arthritis for nearly 18 years. Follow Susan as she undergoes a six week treatment with Peter Yellup, acupuncturist from Grantham Acupuncture who is now available for appointments at Elysium, Grantham. No pain is felk with the ultra fine needles

What is Acupuncture?

A

cupuncture is an ancient system of healing which the Chinese and other eastern cultures have been using to restore and promote their health for approximately 2000 years. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s energy, known as qi, moving through the body in a series of channels just beneath the skin. When this flow of qi becomes disturbed as a result of any number of factors, such as emotional states of stress, anger and anxiety, poor nutrition, hereditary factors, peoples living environment, infections and trauma, the qi may become out of balance and illness may result. Through inserting fine needles into specific points in the body, the acupuncturist is aiming to stimulate the body’s natural healing response and restore the correct balance. More and more people are now choosing alternative medicines such as acupuncture, to help them with all manner of ills. Acupuncture has now been accepted by the NHS as an effective pain management system, particularly for back pain.

10 | anne louise march 2011

“I was diagnosed with arthritis nearly 18 years ago, and have since had my wrist and foot fused to try and help alleviate some of the pain. Having my foot fused for a second time due to the first one being unsuccessful I was left with nerve damage causing me numbness, pins and needles, coldness and tightness. After doing some research I discovered that Acupuncture can help relieve and treat a vast number of ailments and thought that this if anything might help as it’s targeting energy points inside my foot. The first session included a detailed consultation to find out symptoms, medical history, diet, sleeping patterns and emotional state. My pulse and tongue was also examined allowing Peter to work out the best course of treatment. Lying on the couch Peter sterilised my skin and applied

disposable, single use and very fine needles to the points he felt needed working on, in my case this was my fused right foot, left foot, couple in my hands and one in my forehead to help me relax. I didn’t feel anything as the needles went in apart from a couple which were not painful but caused me to jolt. After tweaking the needles Peter left me to relax for fifteen minutes to let the needles work their magic. Once the needles were removed, again no pain during this process I was advised that I might feel a mild dizzy sensation and tiredness. A few hours after the treatment I did experience tiredness and had a better night sleep than I usually have. Peter has a very calming effect and I found the whole experience enjoyable and can’t wait until my next appointment!”

Peter has appointments running throughout Friday and Saturday at Elysium Beauty & Complementary Therapy, 18 St Catherine’s Road, Grantham, NG31 6TT For more information give Peter a call on 07921 250 171 www.granthamacupuncture.co.uk info@granthamacupuncture.co.uk

MakeupBlog Makeup expert, Lisa Precious, shares her tips on how to achieve great make-up on a budget...

N

ot everybody has a bottomless pit of cash to spend on themselves in the quest to look good, however a hefty price tag does not always mean that you are buying the best product with your hard earned money. With some of the premium brands, you are in some cases paying for high quality packaging and branding for very little product. Therefore this month I wanted to bring you a few of my favourite budget buys which I personally use and highly recommend.

1 3 5 7

Boots Essentials Cucumber Facial Wash 150ml £1.52, Removes all make-up gently without stripping. I have used this for years and recommend to clients.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip gloss £6.99, I adore this! It’s non sticky, really glossy and very comfortable to wear. Nude Lustre is a very flattering everyday nude which suits all.

Bourjois Limited Edition Blush £7.49, Parisian inspired pots of blush in beautiful Spring fresh shades.

Vaseline Rosy lips Therapy Stick £2.03, For that English Rose effect, leaves your lips rose tinted, moisturised and natural looking.

14 | anne louise march 2011

2 4 6 8

Maybelline The Falsies Black Mascara £8.19, I have just purchased this in the waterproof version and have put it through swimming and a steam room and it held up very well. Plus the brush is a great shape for coating all the lashes whilst adding a touch of drama without false lashes. Barry M Dazzle Dust Eyeshadow £4.50, Wow what is there not to love about these adorable little pots in an whole array of spectacular shades which can be used on the eyes, lips and cheeks.

Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil in Jet Black £2.99, One of the best kohl pencils I have tried and the most reasonabley priced. it beats all the premium brands, not too hard, not too soft, just right.

Touch Of Light Concealer from £1.25, A much cheaper alternative to YSL’s Touche Eclat, this does exactly the same job at a fraction of the price.

Baby Massage T

here is no real stable evidence to support where baby massage originates from. Although it is a huge tradition in India which has been practised for generations within the families. Being passed from mother to daughter. Baby massage is not the latest trendy ‘fad’ it is an ancient art that plays a huge factor in the beginning of a newborn’s life. In India the baby is massaged on a daily basis for months, it’s only once the child turns two that they space out the massaging to alternate days. The list of benefits is endless not just for the infant receiving the massage but also for the massage giver. The more frequent the massage is carried out the stronger the bond becomes, making every massage relaxing and enjoyable. One person that strongly believes in baby massage is Amy Lovegrove, the trustee of Nurturing Hands, www. nurturinghands.org. Being a child practitioner with eight years post qualifying experience, plus having

a strong history in Psychology and child and family support. Amy set up this business with co-founder Sarah Franks with a firm belief that every parent needs a helping hand from time to time. Nurturing Hands provide a baby massage course either on a one to one basis or at a group workshop. This is a five week course that will help encourage the mother to understand her baby more by creating a stronger bond and growing confidence with support and advice. “Baby massage class will help with sleep and colic” quotes Nurturing Hands, and it doesn’t end there!! Not only does baby massage stimulate the nervous and immune system. The benefits also include relaxation properties that helps to regulate sleeping patterns. Relief from constipation and teething. Digestion. Respiratory system and importantly communication between the mother and baby. This class is perfect for all you mothers out there!

Massage for Wind & colic relief Here is one of the baby massages which I personally found to be my favourite. Called I Love You by www.nurturinghands.org. Starting on the top of the baby’s left hand side as shown in the diagram massage straight down three times, followed by doing one upside down L, starting from the baby’s top right side going straight across and then down, remembering to be lightly firm. Ending with a singular upside down U. Starting from the baby’s bottom right side moving in an angle upwards round then down to the baby’s left hand side. I found this very beneficial for my daughters tummy after a warm bath, having suffered with colic.

Soft and precious Burts Bees Baby Bee Apricot Baby Oil £10.50 For www.vanillabloom.com I must say I thoroughly enjoyed sampling this product. Just after bath time in a warm room I would massage this baby oil into my daughters skin with vitamin rich oils and being made from all natural ingredients plus being in environmentally sensitive packaging. I was confident in using this product. My daughter, was relaxed and enjoyed every moment! Once applied it absorbed quickly leaving the skin gentle with a delicate delicious smell.

Exclusive video interview! Check out the exclusive interview with the gorgeous Ultra Girls online @ www.annelouisemagazine.com You may think you’ve seen girlbands before, but it’s been a very long time since you’ve seen one quite like the Ultra Girls. Going back to the roots of what it means to be girls in a band, Lucy, Lauren, Amy and Laura are taking the essence of Girl Power but moving it into the 21st Century by adding slick dance moves, funky vocals and lashings of attitude. Hailing from Leeds, this four-piece are proud Northerners – warning: any Southerners might need subtitles when the girls get into full excitable mode – and want to put their city on the music map. The perfect antidote for anyone sick of dirgy indie or tacky ballads, these are the sort of girls you’d see on a Saturday night leading a nightclub full of people to a made up dance routine. “We’re young and fun. We want you to dance with us, wear your trackies with us and go crazy. It’s not ‘look how sexy we are’ it;s girls singing about girls lives, not taking it too seriously or being too polished.” Ultra Girls’ story begins in March 2008, on a wet and windy rugby pitch when the girls were all dancers for Leeds Rhinos rugby club. They soon realised they all had an unfulfilled love for singing and were, “Bored of waiting on the sidelines”. So during one particularly boring car journey back from a game the girls decided it was time to man up, show each other what they could do and put themselves on the starting line to see if they had what it takes. Despite their distinct musical tastes – from Indie to R&B, Motown to extreme pop - the girls were united in two things: their teenage love for the Spice Girls and the belief the industry was missing a girl band with raw energy that danced as well as they sung. Hard core rehearsals followed for six months, but instead of doing a few little pub gigs to one man and his dog, the girls decided to throw themselves in at, the very deepest bit of the deep end. “Our first gig was at Elland Road stadium in front of 32,000 people” explains Amy “We were clueless. We

didn’t know what we were doing, but we absolutely loved it.” More gigs round the city followed until a little thing called the X Factor came along in 2009. The girls decided to give it a go and surprised even themselves, when they made it all the way to Louis Walsh’s house. Despite leaving the show at that stage, it cemented what they’d always know: that singing was their destiny. “For us that was just the beginning,” says Lauren It gave us so much confidence and cemented exactly what Project A was all about.” Project A? Huh? “Well that was the original name, a ‘work in progress’. We left that name behind, as we wanted something that summed up where we are now, as well as showing our personalities and energy.” So when you’re aiming big, you’ve got to be surrounded by big, and the team who are helping the girls along the way are none other than Pop’s dream team (aka the newly christened Ultra Family). Including executive producer Steve Anderson (Kylie, Westlife, Britney), stylist Kenny Ho (Spice Girls & Girls Aloud), songwriter and musical director Sarah deCourcy (Christophe Willem, Kylie & Mel C), choreographers Aaron Sillis (Kylie & Cheryl Cole) and Tony Testa (Lady Gaga, Britney, Kylie, and Michael Jackson). “We’re the luckiest girlgroup in the world!” they, quite rightly, say. After a 12 month whirlwind of refining their modernenergetic pop sound and beginning to write their own songs and commuting between Leeds and London the girls are gearing up for the launch of their new single, ‘Girls Will be Girls’, this year. Their debut is an old-school up-lifting belter with tight vocals and of course a funky dance routine and they have very high hopes “We can’t pretend we don’t want a number one. Of course we do. We want to walk into a club and see everyone singing along,” says Lucy. They’re also halfway through the first album due in Summer – as well as gigging all over the place; recently supporting Tinchy Stryder. They put it best themselves, “People are just waiting for a girlband to come and shake things up. Not just be present but completely take over and knock everyone else dead.” march 2011 anne louise | 19

Meet the Girls... If there was an award for best stomach on a girl in pop ever, it would go to Lauren Green, 23, who brings an urban vibe to the group - though before that she went to stage school, then joining a tribute act with Tom from the Wanted – he did Take That, she did Girls Aloud. She got the funk.

Amy Burrow, 27. As the eldest of the group, she gives the impression of being the most sensible, but is also obsessed with Jared Leto and er, Peter Andre. Her love for performing developed when she was a young teenager and joined a dance and drama group, where even then she was crazy about pure pop, “I’ve always listened to Britney, Backstreet Boys, Nync, even Aqua. Anything that just makes you feel good and dance around. I hate it when people say pop’s cheesy.”

There’s cheeky. And then there’s

Lucy “I can’t sit here and

not speak” Graham. A 21 year old bundle of energy, who first started performing age three, “I loved being centre of attention even then”. But beneath the bolshy exterior lies a hugely ambitious core, I want us to be number one around the world.” Beside, her psychic told her she was going to be big in Germany.

Looking like a cross between the best bits of Alexa Chung

and Rachel Stevens, is Laura Henderson though her bandmates aren’t always so complimentary, “Lucy tells me I act like a lad”. The 22 year old lives with her family and two cats – one’s called Ruby who used to be a girl, but is now a boy. Obviously!

Saving

Start saving as soon as possible, with most weddings costing between ÂŁ15,000 and ÂŁ25,000 you need to be putting away as much as possible. Ideally 10-20% of your salary. This can be hard especially in these hard financial times. So how ever much you can spare put away in a special wedding fund.

Risotto stuffed Ramiro peppers (Serves 4)

2 vegetarian stock cubes dissolved in 1litre of water 2 tbsp olive oil 1 leek, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 150g curly kale, chopped 50ml vegetarian white wine 1 lemon, zest only 250g Arborio/risotto rice 150g frozen peas Salt and black pepper 8 straight, red Ramiro peppers 6 tbsp olive tapenade (see below) 20 small cherry tomatoes on the vine (5 per person) 1. Preheat oven to 220C. Put the vegetable stock into a saucepan and simmer. 2. In a large, wide frying pan fry the leek in a little oil for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and fry for another minute.

3. Steam the kale for 5 minutes, run under cold water, drain and set to one side. 4. Add the white wine, lemon zest and rice to the leeks and stir well making sure that the rice is well coated. Cook until the wine has been soaked up by the rice. Now ladle some of the stock over the rice and stir. 5. As the stock is absorbed by the rice keep topping up with more hot stock from the saucepan and keep stirring. You may not need all the stock depending on the size of pan used. It should take about 15-20 minutes until the risotto has a creamy consistency and the rice is cooked. 6. Add the peas and wilted kale to the risotto about 5 minutes before the end, season to taste. 7. Cut the tops off the Ramiro peppers and stuff with the risotto, followed

by a teaspoon of the tapenade. Repeat this for all the peppers until they are filled. You will have risotto left for serving. Set the remaining risotto to one side, reheat just before serving. 7. Place the peppers and tomatoes onto a foil-lined baking tray, drizzle with a little olive oil and roast for 10-15 minutes. 8. To serve, place a large spoonful of the spare risotto onto a large plate and stack two peppers against it. Place a set of cherry tomatoes next to the risotto. NB: You can make your own tapenade by blending 30g olives, 1 tsp capers, 2 tsp olive oil and 1 tsp dried oregano.

It’s in the stars... March horoscopes by Anne Louise’s astrologer Jason Caddy

Aries

21 Mar - 21 April

Taurus

22 April - 21 May

Gemini

21 May- 20 June

You will make terrific progress right now, as Jupiter and Uranus in your sign ignite your natural zeal. Now that Venus has moved into Aquarius, others will be more inclined to roll over and give in to your whims. The sun in your sign from 20th gives you ample opportunity to recharge your batteries.

You might feel the urge to make some image changes this month. Even if you don’t, there will be an air of confidence about you. Uranus and Jupiter back in Aries help you tick boxes over ambition, and you’ll do things on your terms. Prepare for Mercury to shake up your social contacts.

Jupiter and Uranus are now in Aries making this a time for you to really push your own agenda. Saturn will bring you stable foundations from which to work so don’t blow this opportunity. Anything new and fresh that comes at you socially will carry a strange yet magnetic appeal.

Cancer

Leo

Virgo

22 June - 23 July

24 July - 23 Aug

24 Aug - 23 Sept

You will make it your mission to show the world your individuality this month. Venus in Aquarius turns on passion and this may be heightened, so don’t be coy. The sun in Pisces brings legal matters or travel to the surface, along with an urge to dive headfirst into practical matters.

Jupiter and Uranus in Aries should go a long way in helping you banish those winter blues, while Venus in Aquarius helps you look at partnerships. You should gain greater understanding of how you are perceived by the outside world, and what it has all been about for you.

This is a prolific time for working with others, as Venus in Aquarius means that you will derive a tremendous amount of satisfaction from teamwork. But Venus in this part of the chart can also sweeten the look of excess and you may be tempted to go over the score.

Libra 24 Sept - 23 Oct

Scorpio 24 Oct - 23 Nov

Sagittarius 23 Nov - 22 Dec

With Jupiter and Uranus in Aries, don’t be surprised if people come to you with all kinds of drastic suggestions. Love and romance may also be a bit startling. Venus in Aquarius heralds a time of being out and about, and you will be drawn to fun types.

Venus stimulates the need for intimacy, and you may want to barricade yourself in from the outside world and shun the social scene for the time being. The world of work also becomes increasingly more exciting to you, as a combination of luck and drive get you noticed.

This prevailing cosmic activity may be a bit confusing, so please don’t scatter your energy, as you could end up squandering chances. Venus in Aquarius will help you feel popularity within your close circle is all about. You have a tremendous support network.

Capricorn 23 Dec - 20 Jan

Aquarius

Pisces 20 Feb - 20 Mar

Jupiter and Uranus are now back in Aries, and this means that you are looking to make some alterations to the very roots of your life. Whatever you have been contemplating these last few months, you are now in a position to actualise it. Keep a close eye on spending.

Venus in your sign asks you to scrutinise your relationships and Neptune, still hanging on in there, may cause you to want to run away from commitment and emotional reality. Keep your practical head on and you shouldn’t stray too far from what is meant for you.

32 | anne louise March 2011

21 Jan - 19 Feb

Uranus and Jupiter in Aries bring a dramatic turnaround in what you want for you, and with the sun in your sign it’s time to fight your own corner. The final week of the month, once the sun has departed, begins a time of confusion when it is vital that you watch what you say to others.
