AUTOMATISM - Spontaneous behavior; an act performed unconsiously.
Automatism is a technique used by surrealist painters and poets to express the creative force of the unconscious in art. Coincidence and chance plays an important role in automatism drawing. Automatism is the source of inspiration for my MA project. I will use and develop the different techniques and use the findings as the startingpoint for my final collection. Too much freedom can be a hurdle when working in the creative process. I see the automatism techniques as a way to kickstart my creative process and create some interesting frames for the project. I will use my findings as the starting point for my moodboard, material investigation and shape investigation. I see this as an opportunity to create a more unconcious starting point - a starting point that I would not be able to create, if I did not let the unconcious play the most important role. The project will be an assignment created and solved by using unconcious chance. I have been looking into 10 different automatism techniques. - Outagraphy, frottage, aerography, collage, ĂŠclaboussure, coulage, fumage, entopic graphomania, soufflage, decalcomania. The automatism techniques used can either be left as originally concieved or consicously elaborated upon. In this paper I have explained the way the different techniques was executed and given my thoughts on how these might benefit my further process and investigation. This is the starting point of my experiments. It serves as inspiration for new techniques derived from the already existing.
