The Tannery District Sustainable Neighbourhood Master Plan establishes a comprehensive, ambitious yet implantable vision for the evolution of the Tannery District, a 12-hectare brownfield site located within walking distance of downtown Cobourg.

As the town faces increased development pressure as an extension of affordability issues in the Greater Toronto Area, the Tannery District is an integral step in the revitalization of its downtown, and the promotion of new and diverse economic opportunities.

In addition the Master Plan compliments the Town of Cobourg’s commitment to sustainable growth, envisioning the regeneration of the former tannery site into a vibrant and innovative complete neighbourhood. project description

Augmenting the inherent sustainability of brownfield regeneration, the plan is rooted in the One Planet Living Principles, a progressive development framework for development that uses key performance indicators and targets to ensure environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability. The Tannery District will become only the fourth community in North America to achieve recognition as a One Planet Living Community, a status that will reinforce The Tannery District as a cutting-edge sustainable community.

The Federal Campus Master Plan proposes to transform a poorly utilized employment hub into a mixed-use community. Urban Design Guidelines were prepared to outline the implementation of the 25-year vision, which includes major investments in both existing buildings and future developments.

RESTCo is a federally incorporated, privately held, Canadian business. It was established in 2010 by a number of like-minded individuals to work together with remote (off-grid) communities, notably in the Canadian Arctic

TRIFLEX is a proposal for a three-point foundation housing design in a response to the Canadian Arctic community which are vulnerable to permafrost thaw and the anticipated damage it is to cause. TRIFLEX, is

a durable, adaptable and energy efficient alternative to existing housing. It envisions a future in Northern housing that not only implements energy security strategies while maintaining a modular means of construction but incorporates the opportunity for the most vulnerable communities to exercise agency within their built environment.

Islomania Possibility of An Island

Project Type Master Plan & Commercial Studio Project - Lisbon DSA Date Spring 2016 Location Trinidade Island, Brazil

The Exhibition Centre and Research studio sits on the edge of the island, embedded into the earth, facing the tumultuous ocean.

As metaphor, the centre embodies a resignation to the landscape; a reminder that the unbuilt does not secede to the built.

The project “Islo-mania” embraces the possibility of an uninhabited location. Described as a “topographic disaster” the island of Trinidade, off the coast of Brazil in the Southern Atlantic is well-marked by its scarce but long history, climate, landscape and resources.

Islomania puts forward a Utopian Master Plan for the islands occupation defined by three main sites: 1. Arrival, 2. Harvest, 3 Knowledge.

The second site, Harvest, explores the possibilities of the landscape as both monument and educational tool. The proposal manipulates the Harvest site’s restraints so that they function towards the site’s overall role within the island - to provide and to distribute. The proposed architecture becomes the means at which the landscape is not only experienced, but is understood as the binary between built and unbuilt becomes embedded in the production of space. project description

The 21st century city has been and will continue to be re-shaped and re-defined by the socio-cultural factor of international migration and the accompanying politics of ethno-cultural difference.

Balikbayan Blues: Unfolding A Collective Identity Neither “Here” Nor “There” sets out to examine the implications of the politics of difference and the persistence and plasticity of culture through the context of the SoMa district in San Francisco - a city home to the second largest community of Filipinos in America.

A study of such dynamics - of diaspora, the “Other”, and the inbetween - will frame an analysis of the Filipino balikbayan box ritual, utilized as a metaphorical tool in exploring new methods of building, situated within the negotiation of a collective memory of the homeland and responsive adaptations to the host locale, in the 21st century multi-cultural, multi-ethnic cities. The architecture that emerges is neither here, nor there and neither completely fiction or faithful. Instead, the spaces that materialize are something in-between; in perpetual mutation.

Site One The relationship between Gen 1.5 & 2.0 is one defined by their relationship to the hostland and an abstracted notion of “home”, which contradicts how they identify with their immediate surroundings. Despite primarily identifying with the hostland they are still “Other” and in experimentation and expression, as they move towards a new cultural narrative that is not necessarily associated with the homeland.

Site Two The conflict between Gen 1.0 & 2.0 is defined by a diametrically opposed understandings of “home” both locationally and culturally. To mediate the gap of understanding the tactics that are proposed are based around the program of storytelling. As opposition is the expected behaviour between the generations, the montage expresses moments of both passage and pause.

Site Three The relationship between Gen 1.5 & 1.0 is one rooted in nostalgia and the action of “remembering”. The most insular out of the three generational relationships, their conflict is primarily situated in how to frame and distribute the memories of the homeland. Regine Malibiran is a creative and co-founder of collective blue, an Austin-based lifestyle brand that celebrates diverse creators through digital storytelling and event production.
