A2SF 2023 Annual Report

Page 1

For our inaugural partnership with the University of Michigan Arts Initiative, A2SF was thrilled to present Little Amal, the internationally celebrated 12-foot-tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl. As part of an epic 6,000-mile journey across the United States, Amal is an international symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees. Amal’s visit to Ann Arbor included two walks — one on the U-M campus, which featured our partners at the University of Michigan Museum of Arts (UMMA), and the other, an evening trek from the Kerrytown Farmers Market to the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library (AADL).

Congresswoman Dingell and Mayor Taylor greet Little Amal.

Students and faculty from the U-M School of Music, Theatre, & Dance contributed creative direction, music, and dance for these remarkable walks. Other partners included Jewish Federation Services, the Neutral Zone, and the U-M Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies (CMENAS).

I was brought on by my professor, Malcolm Tulip, said director BFA Directing Student Tiara Partsch about her experience directing Amal Walks at the University of Michigan. “I wanted to celebrate the campus. It’s a place that’s taught me about community, resilience and vulnerability. Working with A2SF was just a joy. I learned so much, and the support I received allowed me to dream big when it came to this project.”

Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, and Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me! all graced the Hill Auditorium Stage this season.

A2SF’s highly anticipated season kickoff and annual fundraiser brought together 277 guests for an unforgettable evening filled with unique performances, delicious food, and beverages. This special event raised vital funds to support A2SF’s mission of enriching the community by investing in artists and events that enhance our quality of life.

Sustainability

Each season, over 500 enthusiastic volunteers dedicate thousands of hours to A2SF, serving as ushers, greeters, interns, and ambassadors. Their passion and commitment are the heart of A2SF.

A2SF, along with our entire community, is deeply grateful for these dedicated individuals and organizations. Their tireless efforts helped raise $56,000 from individuals and families this year—funds that are critical for bringing joy, inspiration, and the magic of live events to our community.
