A2SF 2025 Annual Report

2025 ANNUAL REPORT

WELCOME

Thank you for making the 2025 season such a memorable one.

This year, A2SF brought together exceptional touring ensembles from across the country and celebrated the talent in our own backyard. We hosted students from programs like the American Saxophone Academy and partnered with dozens of community organizations to expand our outreach efforts. Audiences were surprised and delighted by impromptu performances on the lawn from groups like Pittsburgh-based Squonk and The Kif-Kif Sisters, hailing from Montréal.

We were also thrilled to return our After Dark DJ series to the Grove and expand the Movies by Moonlight series. Informed by a community listening session held in February, we implemented the first set of changes aimed at better supporting families—including earlier start times on Sundays.

Behind the scenes, A2SF continued to make strategic investments in infrastructure and operations to strengthen the organization and improve the experience for artists and audiences alike. New benches, picnic tables, and production equipment were added, and—in partnership with the University of Michigan—we completed an event power upgrade that eliminates our reliance on diesel generators and moves us closer to Ann Arbor’s carbon reduction goals. These improvements support both our longterm sustainability and our efforts to restore an additional week to the annual season.

We invite you to revisit some of this season’s highlights with us.

Our Board and staff are always eager to connect, hear your stories, and learn from you. If you’d like to know more about how to continue to support our work, please reach out to us at info@a2sf.org.

Thank you for being part of this community—and for investing in its future. Mark your calendars for June 12, 2026, when we return to Ingalls Mall!

RHYTHM REUNION RENEWAL

STRINGS OF CONNECTION

Despite a rainy opening night, spirits glowed as audiences gathered for a community jam with GRAMMY Award-winning artist presented in partnership with the U-M Arts Initiative as its first Artist in Residence. A2SF invited 25 local musicians, selected through an open call, to join Giddens for an improvised exploration of rhythm, trance, and connection. Playing entirely by ear, participants and audience alike were swept into the soulful pulse of old-time music. The collaboration embodied the spirit of A2SF, celebrating artistry, inclusion, and community. That spirit resonated long after the last note faded, reminding us that even in the rain, music and connection endure.

SOUNDING THE NEXT GENERATION

Over two nights, A2SF celebrated rising musical talents through collaborations with the University of Michigan’s Center Stage Strings and the American Saxophone Academy. These performances capped each program’s summer residency, showcasing emerging musicians from across the country.

Center Stage Strings brought chamber music to life with expressive performances by exceptional young artists, ages 12 to 24, highlighting classical and contemporary works. The following evening, the American Saxophone Academy filled the lawn with lively selections, concluding with a 40-member saxophone choir.

Together, these concerts reflected A2SF’s deep connection with the University and its commitment to nurturing artistic growth and collaboration.

FOUNDING PARTNERS

A2SF continues to be a shining example of collaboration between the University and the broader Ann Arbor community, creating relevant experiences that are meaningful, exciting, and reflective of the times in which we live. These experiences support staff and faculty, bring families to campus, provide arts opportunities for students here in the summer, and enhance the appeal and livability of our city. A2SF also brings together diverse communities and represents multitudes of artistic expressions so all feel welcome and heard.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

In 2025, our audiences were treated to unforgettable performances that challenged expectations and sparked their imagination. Shadow puppeteer Matt Sandbank returned with Still Life, a witty and wordless exploration of what happens when the world refuses to behave as planned—captivating audiences of all ages with his expressive artistry.

Squonk’s Brouhaha transformed Top of the Park into a riot of sound and spectacle, featuring their colossal Squonkcordion, rollicking live music, and larger-than-life visuals. This interactive outdoor celebration drew the crowd into the performance itself, turning play into community.

Montreal’s Kif-Kif Sisters brought their mischievous blend of circus, puppetry, and physical theater in Jam Side Up!, inviting children and adults alike into their inventive, whimsical world.

GLOBAL PARTIES LOCAL HEART

Launched in the early 2000s through the visionary partnership with Toyota, Global Parties began as a way to highlight the rich diversity of artistic expression in southeast Michigan. What started as a programming initiative has since become a defining part of A2SF’s DNA — an enduring commitment to celebrating cultural traditions, amplifying myriad voices, and welcoming the world to Ann Arbor.

Over the past decade, the series has featured artists and ensembles representing more than 30 countries and a wide range of musical traditions, including GRAMMY-winners like Las Cafeteras and groundbreaking performers such as Sona Jobarteh.

In 2025, that series came full circle as we reflected on the cultural richness in our own community, featuring performances by Shiv Shardul, Ann-Hua Chinese School Dragon and Lion Dance, OKAN, Balkan Brass, and Salsa Night. The series continues to evolve in step with the community we serve –global artistry on a local stage.

BIG AND BRASS

From the precision and swing of The Jazz Ambassadors, the U.S. Army’s premier big band, to the politically charged power of Brass Against, audiences were treated to unforgettable performances that blended tradition with innovation. Chicago’s beloved Mucca Pazza brought their joyful marchingband-meets-rock-show chaos, while Spain’s Balkan Brass electrified the crowd with infectious rhythms directly from Eastern Europe. Detroit’s own Gabriel Brass Band carried the spirit of New Orleans second line parades, sending audiences off in dance, revelry, and community joy.

SPARK AND PLAY

Thousands of children participated in nightly activities in the KidZone, learning about science experiments, planting a garden, meeting animals up close, getting their hands on orchestra instruments, and more. All activities in KidZone are fueled by dedicated community partners, and this year they included Therapaws, Leslie Science and Nature Center, A2ZERO, Willow Run Acres, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Launch Ann Arbor, Annie’s Children’s Center, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Washtenaw Community College, Clonlara, Big Blue Swim School, Copper Tom, and Colorful Events.

Attendees of the Retreat series enjoyed classes ranging from cross-fit to yoga to swing dance lessons on the lawn of the Power Center for the Performing Arts.

AFTER DARK

This year’s return of After Dark, following a 10-year hiatus, reaffirmed A2SF’s role as a gathering place that connects generations through music and community. Featuring an eclectic lineup of celebrated local and regional talent—DJ Problematic Black Hottie, DJ BATZ, DJ EJay and On Time Tello, DJ Graffiti, DJ Medusa, and 3Steez—the series offered a wide spectrum of sound and style, reflecting the diversity of our community itself.

The response was overwhelming: young attendees discovered a welcoming late-night experience, while longtime supporters embraced the renewed vibrancy of an A2SF tradition. Beyond the music, After Dark became a fresh atmosphere of inclusion, joy, and shared celebration, embodying the A2SF’s mission to create free, accessible cultural experiences that bring people together.

FULL CIRCLE FROM STAFF TO SUPPORTER

A2SF has provided first jobs to thousands of high school and college students. Each season, A2SF employs over 100 seasonal staff, and for many, it’s a rite of passage to work at a place they grew up enjoying. Hear from two such former staffers who’ve become supporters this year:

Hannah Smith grew up in Ann Arbor and landed her first job at Top of the Park while she was a student at Huron High. If something needed doing behind the scenes, Hannah was there, wielding a paintbrush to refresh the fence around the beverage garden or helping set up the giant movie screen for nightly films. She loved the energy of working outdoors, surrounded by music, people, and purpose.

Today, Hannah still feels that same connection to A2SF. “It’s a unique place where families and people can come together for concerts and events that are free,” she says. Inspired by A2SF’s mission and impact, Hannah became a monthly donor. “It’s our responsibility to support what we believe in, and A2SF makes our community a great place to live.” Her recurring gift is her way

of giving back and ensuring the festival thrives for another 42 years and beyond.

For Benjamin Muth, A2SF has always been more than just a summer tradition. It’s been part of his story from the very beginning. His first job was at Top of the Park, where, as a high school student, he helped keep the grounds and patrons safe.

Today, Ben is a Personal Injury Attorney and Principal at Muth Law, a family firm that has been serving Ann Arbor for over 35 years. In 2025, he and his firm became a Title Sponsor, a full-circle moment that connects his personal history with his profession.

Ben; his wife, Elizabeth; and their young son are excited to deepen their engagement with A2SF. To them, A2SF is still what it was when he first

experienced it: a safe, vibrant place where young people can discover the arts, connect with one another, and grow.

“We are lucky to be living in Ann Arbor, where we can contribute to incredible institutions like A2SF and directly see the impact on our

community. We believe in fostering spaces where art, connection, and local pride come together to enrich lives,” Ben reflects. His hope is that his investment will help A2SF continue to thrive for the next generation, just as it helped shape his own.

debut SEASON KICKOFF

Every year, A2SF hosts our annual fundraiser, debut, to kick off the season. This year, we welcomed 283 guests for an unforgettable evening filled with unique performances, scrumptious food, and celebratory beverages. The event raised vital funds to support A2SF’s mission of enriching the community by investing in artists and cultural partnerships that enhance our quality of life.

This year’s honorary hosts were John and Jackie Farah, Stephanie and Tim Freeth, Kathy Legatski, Sally and Bill Martin, Alison and Rishi Narayan, and Anuja Rajendra and Vijay Sankeran.

“WE ARE VERY LUCKY THAT A2SF HAS BEEN A COMMUNITY TRADITION FOR 42 YEARS! THINK OF ALL THE PROGRAMS AND FAMILIES AND FRIENDS WE SEE GATHERING ON THE LAWN TO ENJOY THE SUMMER EVENINGS AND ENTERTAINMENT.”
— Jackie Farah, honorary host

FINANCIALS

A2SF continues to be an incredibly effective investment in quality of life, making our city more vibrant, liveable, and welcoming. A2SF’s work is made possible by the generosity of community members, local businesses, foundations, the City of Ann Arbor, and the ongoing support and partnership from the University of Michigan.

In FY25, Net Assets increased through significant endowment growth, and strategic investments in equipment and infrastructure for Top of the Park. Audiences have returned and are exceeding prepandemic levels. A2SF continues to build back towards a sustainable, 21-day season at Top of the Park with compelling ticketed events and special attractions. Revenues were $1,270,252 and expenses were $1,302,814. Audited financials are posted to A2SF.ORG after they’re finalized.

WHO WE ARE

MISSION

A2SF’s mission is to present arts and entertainment that enrich the cultural, economic, and social vitality of the region.

VISION

We are an enduring local treasure, a hub of creative energy that expresses the best of our communities.

CORE VALUES

Excellence: We create relevant experiences that are meaningful, exciting, and inspiring, reflecting the times in which we live.

Engagement: We interact deeply with the diverse array of local communities.

Inclusion: We present a multitude of artistic expressions so that all feel welcome and heard.

We champion performing arts, outdoor entertainment, and community spirit. In addition to a multi-week festival each June that attracts a diverse audience of thousands of people and offers hundreds of concerts, art exhibitions, family-friendly activities, special attractions, and film screenings, A2SF presents the best in live experiences throughout the year.

Through our internationally recognized, multidisciplinary arts festival, we help solidify Ann Arbor’s reputation as a major arts destination. We present one of the biggest outdoor festivals of our kind in the state and employ almost 400 Michigan artists. We provide a safe, fun, barrier-free, and entertaining way to spend a summer evening, especially for families who have attended for generations and who benefit from our youth programs and educational outreach.

A2SF is a major year-round cultural leader in Washtenaw County. We are an economic engine in Southeastern Michigan, providing performance and employment opportunities to Michiganders, including many young adults whose first job or internship is with A2SF.
