From the Commodore Christopher Bell

With ice-covered rivers and creeks, snow, high winds, and generally unpleasant winter weather, it is an absolute delight to say adios to February. The official start of spring is just around the corner, bringing longer days, warmer temperatures, and renewed energy to the waterfront.

On the waterfront, the Frostbite Series resumed on Feb. 2 and continues to thrive. It is fantastic to see our sonars out on the course, competing with their own fleet. Looking ahead, the Race Committee has a packed schedule for 2025, ensuring another incredible year of competition. The official season kicks off with a Race Committee meeting on March 8. Be sure to check the race calendar for Notices of Race (NORs) and other important race-related announcements.

Another major event on the horizon is the Annapolis to Newport Race, one of our club’s signature competitions. The event is fast approaching, with the start date set for June 6. Entries are rolling in, and it is fantastic to see many first-time participants among the more than 50 boats already registered. In preparation, the waterfront staff will host five “What to Expect” seminars, offering essential information for racers and valuable insights for members interested in offshore sailing and boat preparation. Stay tuned to Seaports for registration details.

AYC was well represented at the US Sailing Leadership Forum in Coronado, California, last month. This annual gathering brings together top sailing minds to discuss, innovate, and collaborate on the future of the sport. With more than 600 attendees and 100 presenters, AYC had the largest club representation. Special thanks to our members R/C Gary Jobson, Bob and Jenny Kottler, Bruce Bingman, Taran Teague, Kathy Parks, Jane Millman, Sophie Podlich, and Kevin Reeds, as well as staff members Mercedes Bucelato, Linda Ambrose, Clare Walters, Bobby Lippincott, Hollis Barth, and Mitch Powell, who contributed as presenters and attendees.

Cruise Chair Mike Pitchford provides an exciting update in this issue about our active Cruising Fleet. With two long cruises planned for this summer, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Thanks to all who attended the town hall on February 20. The results of the member survey are as informative as they are fascinating. This is the information that drives the planning process and capital needs over the coming decade. If you did not attend the meeting, the survey results are accessible on our website. Thanks again to the Strategic Planning Committee for the extraordinary amount of work they have put into this effort.

Finally, don’t miss the AYC Foundation Fête & Auction on March 14. This will be an evening of elegance and philanthropy. The event is a cornerstone of the foundation’s work to support the sailing community. Traditions are the foundation of our club, and the AYC Foundation is a tradition we are proud to support. This is a not-to-be-missed event! I didn’t make any boat preparation comments, as it is still too dang cold, but warmer days are ahead—so enjoy the club as the mercury rises!

From the General Manager Brian Asch

Even though the days are getting longer, snowstorms, frigid conditions, and high winds remind us that winter is not letting go without a fight. At AYC, winter hazards can disrupt operations and jeopardize the safety of members and staff. To stay proactive, the staff has implemented the Club’s safety plan to manage risk both on and off the water. We extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff members who volunteered to shovel snow to keep the Club operating. Their efforts are genuinely appreciated—they are the true unsung heroes.

Behind every fantastic member experience is a team of skilled, motivated, and engaged employees. In recognition of their efforts, we have made a concerted effort this past year to praise our staff for their achievements. The Five Star Award, Associate of the Month, Hero Award, and Innovator Award are great examples of how we highlight their outstanding work. Check out the centerspread of this issue to read more!

I'm pleased to announce the creation of a new award: the Diamond Leadership Award. This award is not just another accolade but a symbol of our commitment to excellence. It recognizes the manager who exemplifies exceptional dedication and leadership in advancing AYC’s Platinum-level experience for members and staff. More than that, it serves as a source of inspiration for all of us. It represents excellence, rarity, resilience, and brilliance, and we hope it motivates everyone to strive for their best.

Diamond Leadership Represents:

• Symbol of Excellence: Diamonds are among the most valuable and sought-after stones. They represent the highest achievement and excellence, just like outstanding leaders.

• Resilience and Strength: Diamonds are one of the hardest materials on Earth, symbolizing the resilience, determination, and strength that great leaders embody.

• Timelessness: Diamonds are timeless and enduring, much like the impact of effective leadership, which leaves a lasting legacy.

• Uniqueness: Just as each diamond is unique, a leader’s qualities and contributions are one of a kind, setting them apart from others.

• Brilliance and Clarity: Diamonds are known for their brilliance and clarity, symbolizing leaders who bring vision, insight, and guidance to those they lead.

I am honored to announce that the first recipient of the Diamond Leadership Award is Head Dockmaster Jimmy Hyde, the Club’s very own Tim “The Tool Man” extraordinaire. For the past 18 years, Jimmy has been the cornerstone of the waterfront team, keeping assets on the water and the boatyard in top shape. I don’t think there is anything Jimmy can’t fix, and his MacGyver-like welding skills are exceptional. Recently, Jimmy has been called into service numerous times to plow the parking lots and keep the club operating. His selfless acts—working in whiteout conditions for more than 15 hours straight while most were safely at home—make him a hero in my book. Jimmy, this is long overdue. Thank you for your dedication all these years—you set the bar for the entire team!

Don't forget to check the Club’s Event Calendar for the latest happenings. Yacht Night Bingo and Kids’ Movie Nights have been very popular. The Sushi and Sake Tasting was also a huge hit, as our resident certified sake sommelier, Thomas Agli, put on a great show. Looking ahead, Beverage Manager and Certified Sommelier Adam Seguin has organized a few events you won’t want to miss: Tequila Tasting – Wednesday, March 26: Featuring Fósforo Mezcal and Volans Tequila, presented by industry experts Steve Nilsen and Dan Sering. Light appetizers included! Nicolas Rossignol Wine Dinner – Friday, April 4: A rare chance to explore Burgundy’s finest! Featuring Nicolas Rossignol’s exceptional Pinot Noirs and hosted with Elite Wine Representative Issac Kukulies, the evening includes five of Rossignol’s wines, plus a Champagne and a White Burgundy.

Daylight saving time begins on March 9, and we will transition to in-season hours the following week. At the same time, the Main Club will reopen for Sunday night dinner.

Feedback is key to improvement. This month, we will introduce digital comment submissions to make it easier for you to share your thoughts. Thank you for your continued support and for making AYC more than just a club—a community.

Long Summer CruisesWhat Could Be Better?

It has been a heck of a winter. However, it is March. We are not out of the woods yet. But the calendar is moving in our favor. Spring is technically around the corner. It is time to refine your summer cruising plans!

As many of you know, we have two long cruises in planning for this summer. Summer should be about boat time! A long cruise is just the way to get a good ROI (Return On Investment) from your pride and joy.

In mid-January, we announced the New England/Boston cruise being planned for July by Alan Shearer and his committee. This cruise will have a two-week and a three-week option. The two-week option takes you to various ports of call in Long Island Sound, including Oyster Bay, Shelter Island, Martha’s Vineyard, Newport and Essex. The three-week option takes folks through the Cape Cod Canal and on to Boston with stops to include Provincetown.

When we announced this cruise, we included a link to an interest survey. We already have 30 interested crews! If you have not completed the survey and may be interested in this cruise, on the AYC website, click: On the Water/Cruising/2025 Major Summer Cruises, and respond to the interest survey ASAP. Slips and moorings are already being reserved.

The other long cruise for the summer of 2025, announced in late January, takes us to the Southern Bay. Bill Museler is leading a com-

mittee of Port Captains planning this June cruise. Like our other long summer cruise, this cruise will have a two-week option, to Norfolk and back, and a three-week option that includes a run down the ICW to the Albemarle Sound to complete the “Albemarle Loop”. We have 20 interested crews already. If you may be interested in this cruise, follow the bolded instructions above and let us know.

In August, Tom Farcosky and his committee members are planning a charter cruise in the San Juan Islands. If you have never been to the Pacific NW, it is a different and very rewarding cruising opportunity. We have five boats already chartered with 25 to 30 AYC members signed on as crew. More boats are likely available if you would like to join us.

And to whet your appetite, Drew and Margaret Davis are planning a Charter cruise in the BVI. The likely week will be in the latter half of January. An interest survey for this cruise will be out shortly.

The 2025 Cruising Fleet schedule is available on the AYC website, under On the Water/Cruising. If you are not a candidate for one of the long cruises, join us on some weekend cruises listed on the calendar. While you are on the AYC website, you can update your profile to ensure you are getting the weekly Cruise News emails. Just go to your listing on Roster/My Profile/Opt-In Groups. If you scroll down that list, you can click Cruising Fleet, and you will always be informed of our events. See you on the water!

CPR, First Aid, and AED Courses

AYC is excited to host Keep the Beat CPR LLC to offer the Health & Safety Institute (HSI) Basic CPR AED & First Aid certification course. This course will cover CPR, AED use, choking (airway obstruction), and basic first aid topics such as medical emergencies, basic bleeding control, and allergic reactions & EpiPen administration. Completion of the course results in a two-year certification. There is no minimum or maximum age requirement; however, all students need to be able to perform two-inch-deep chest compressions to meet the skills requirement for the certification.

The HSI CPR AED & First Aid course is a US Coast Guard approved CPR AED First Aid Certification.

There will be two sessions of this course held on March 22, 2025. Session 1 will take place from 0900-1200. Session 2 will take place from 1300-1600.

This course is $70 per person. Your member number will be charged the full amount. Please register once per person.

Cancellations must be made at least 72 hours in advance for a full refund. Cancellations within 72 hours in advance will receive a 50% refund. If there are less than 10 people signed up per session two weeks before the scheduled training date, we will reschedule the classes

Please email Waterfront Coordinator Clare Walters, at cwalters@annapolisyc.org with any questions, concerns, or cancellations.

Celebrating AYC's Heartbeat: Our Exceptional Team

As Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) continues to shine as a Platinum Club of America and the World, it’s not just the stunning waterfront views, world-class facilities, or exceptional programs that make this place stand out. The real secret behind AYC's success is its incredible team of employees. From the dedicated dockmasters to the innovative chefs, our employees are at the core of everything we do, driving excellence day in and day out. This Employee Appreciation Month, we take a moment to honor the people who work tirelessly to ensure every member has an unforgettable experience.

The Role of Employees in AYC's Platinum Club Status

General Manager (GM) Brian Asch emphasizes just how integral the team is to AYC’s Platinum status. “AYC employees are critical to our Club's success. Their adherence to the Ritz-Carlton motto of ‘Ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen’ ensures AYC maintains its Platinum Club status as one of the top yacht clubs in the world,” says Brian.

Through their loyalty and dedication, AYC employees have navigated through some of the most challenging times the Club has faced, from a fire and rebuilding efforts to the global pandemic. “We were stress-tested and proven to be unflappable,” Brian adds, highlighting the resilience of the staff over the last decade.

Creating a Culture of Support and Growth

At AYC, employees are more than just team members—they are valued assets. Human Resources Manager Kim Fortini explains, “We pride ourselves on fostering a feeling of community, teamwork, inclusivity, and transparency. Our goal is to make sure everyone feels

they have a voice, and that voice can make a difference.”

The Club has taken major strides in supporting its employees with new initiatives. AYC University, a development program offering various educational tracks, is one such initiative. Kim shares, “We are excited about the positive impact this will have on our staff, helping them grow both professionally and personally.”

Moreover, AYC is committed to career development. “We have close to 40 employees with over five years of tenure, and over a dozen managers who were promoted from entry-level positions,” Brian notes. This emphasis on internal growth ensures a strong, tenured team that is dedicated to AYC’s long-term success.

Recognizing Excellence

To further honor employee contributions, AYC has introduced two new awards. The Employee Innovator Award, established by GM Brian Asch, recognizes employees or teams that embody our mission and values. This award celebrates those who demonstrate leadership

and dedication in developing innovative operating systems or providing outstanding service. Their work enhances AYC’s commitment to its Platinum-level experience for members and staff, reinforcing our dedication to excellence and the highest service.

The first recipients of the AYC Employee Innovator Award are Skyla Brady, our Director of Communications, and Ariana Alexander, our Marketing/Communications Coordinator. Their numerous accomplishments, including establishing the Club's Marketing/Communications Plan and Style Guide, upgrading our social media presence, and modernizing The Smoking Lamp publication, are a testament to their hard work and dedication. We are excited to see the results of their future projects. Congratulations, Skyla and Ariana, on a job well done!

In addition, AYC is proud to recognize employees who go above and beyond in extraordinary circumstances. The AYC Hero Award was established to honor employees who demonstrate exceptional courage, bravery, and selflessness in the face of danger, often going above the call of duty to protect and save others.

This year, we are thrilled to announce the 2024 AYC Hero Award recipients, whose remarkable actions have truly made a difference in life-threatening situations. Will Donald, a seasoned summer coach at AYC, is the first-ever recipient of this prestigious award. When Will witnessed a woman fall from the Spa Creek Bridge into the water, he acted without hesitation. After ensuring the safety of his group of kids, he quickly partnered with a nearby motorboat to rescue her. Will's swift, decisive actions saved her life, marking a true act of heroism.

Additionally, we are honored to recognize Victor Ledezma, a host at AYC since August 2021, and Abbey Hall, a server at AYC since February 2023. Both Victor and Abbey displayed extraordinary courage when they saved lives by performing the Heimlich maneuver. Victor saved two lives, while Abbey saved one. Their quick thinking and calm presence in a critical moment helped prevent tragedy, and we are deeply grateful for their bravery. Please join us in congratulating Will, Victor, and Abbey for their extraordinary heroism.

Living the Platinum Standard

Being recognized as a Platinum Club is no small feat, but Brian credits the staff as the driving force behind the achievement. “One of the seven criteria for a Platinum Club is adapting to changing times. We’ve done that by creating the Innovator Award, which recognizes employees who anticipate and meet the evolving needs of our members.”

At the heart of AYC are the stories of real employees making a difference every day. One such employee is bartender Ted Schneider, whose hospitality is legendary. An anonymous member shares, “Ted’s hospitality makes the 2nd Deck Bar the place to be! His ability to remember what members like to chat about while offering impeccable service is truly his superpower.” Whether it’s engaging in friendly banter or delivering personalized service, Ted makes every visit feel like a special occasion.

The same warmth and attention to detail can be found in Coleen Foley, Activity Center Front Desk Associate. “Coleen always greets me by name and with a smile when I enter the Activity Center. She remembers that my son likes to play Xbox and has the controller ready for him. She always goes above and beyond to help,” shares a member. Her attentiveness and genuine care make every visit feel special, demonstrating the exceptional service that defines AYC.

Behind the scenes, Mercedes Bucelato plays a vital role in keeping AYC’s operations running smoothly. Her impact was particularly felt in the Cruising Fleet, where she was instrumental in its growth and success. “If there were an anecdote to capture how Mercedes supported the Fleet, it would be: ‘The answer is yes. What’s the question?’” says a former Fleet Chair. “Regardless of the issue—complicated reimbursements, reconciling cruise budgets, or handling event contracts—Mercedes was always on top of it. She was a pleasure to work with and a ‘force multiplier’ who gave the Fleet the ability to accomplish so much more.” Thanks in part to her efforts, participation in the Cruising Fleet increased by 50%, a testament to how AYC’s employees enhance the member experience.

The AYC team’s commitment to excellence often goes unnoticed by members—unless you know where to look. Kim offers simple suggestions for members to show their appreciation: “A kind word goes a long way. Fill out a positive comment card or let a manager know when an employee goes above and beyond. These small gestures of gratitude mean the world to our team.”

The employees of AYC aren’t just responsible for keeping the Club running smoothly—they are also shaping the future. “As we continue to grow and adapt, our team will be at the forefront of that evolution,” says Brian. “I encourage members to share their stories of excellence and recognize the employees who go above and beyond in creating exceptional experiences.”

This month, let’s take a moment to show our appreciation for the people who make AYC such a special place to be. To our employees— thank you for your dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to excellence. You are the heartbeat of Annapolis Yacht Club.

AYC Foundation Fete & Auction

An Uptown Event in Downtown Annapolis!

Join us on Friday, March 14, for the AYC Foundation Fête & Auction, where we will celebrate our mission with live music, gourmet hors d’oeuvres and craft cocktails. Connect with some of the region’s most inspirational sailors and get a chance to win top-tier auction items. With your support, we aim to raise $100,000 to fuel our work.

Serving as the philanthropic arm of the Annapolis Yacht Club, the Foundation’s mission is to provide scholarships to underserved youths to participate in junior sailing instruction, grants to maritime-related 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organizations, and grants to amateur sailors competing at the highest levels. All funds raised through this event drive this important work in our community.

Commodore Chris Bell will start the evening welcoming guests and expressing our deepest gratitude to all those who support the AYC Foundation. Event hosts Cole and James Allsopp will moderate a panel discussion with three individuals representing each pillar of the AYC Foundation mission:

• Sarah Ramson (scholarship) - Sarah is a 15-year-old from the West River Sailing Club who discovered her love for sailing a few years ago. With scholarships from the AYC Foundation, she attended summer sailing school and joined her high school team. Sarah now speaks about her passion for sailing and promotes inclusion in the sailing community.

• Warrior Sailing (501(c)(3) grant) - Warrior Sailing is one of many charitable organizations the AYC Foundation proudly supports. Warrior Sailing gets military service members on the water to provide physical, mental and emotional therapy for a variety of injuries and illnesses.

• Leo Boucher (amateur grant) - This past January, with the help of the AYC Foundation, Leo attended critical training in Ft. Lauderdale and competed in the Lauderdale Olympic Classes (LOCR). While there, Leo had the opportunity to learn from top sailors like Tom Saunders and Stefano Peschiera.

Tickets and sponsorships are tax-deductible and will directly support our important community work.

We hope to see you at the AYC Foundation Fête on March 14! Visit givebutter.com/c/FoundationFete for tickets.

Thank you to our sponsors!

Fine-Tuning AYC's Vision 2030

Your Board of Governors and Strategic Planning Committee have been busy fine-tuning “AYC’s Vision 2030, Tradition, Innovation and Passion for Excellence” as we work through objectives for each vision within the eight pillars. Goals are being clarified across the pillars, and they will be aligned with annual business planning. The objectives provide actions to meet those goals. Each objective has a timeline associated with those who will carry out those objectives. Some objectives are already well underway; others have a further horizon in line with achieving the visions by 2030.

AYC’s strategic planning process is constructed to be continuous, with regular review and communication based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that will provide actionable data. The implementation allows flexibility to change course as we learn together what works and what may not.

We look forward to sharing details of the vision document and planning process at the next Town Hall, on February 20. Your attendance and participation are critical to the process, so please sign up now. Future Town Halls have been scheduled for June 26 and September 10. Please note these in your calendars!

STRATEGIC PLAN VISION

Implementation of an effective, holistic strategic plan that ensures AYC's long term viability for future generations of Club members.

STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS

1. Maintain and expand the value of AYC's membership for current and future members.

2. Ensure that AYC remains first and foremost a yacht club, focused on our boating heritage and committed to excellence in support of the Club's mission.

3. Ensure that AYC remains sustainable, financially strong, and successful for future generations of boaters.
