WORK EXPERIENCE
BROCK POINT
2023-24
BIRMINGHAM, AL
After recently purchasing their forever home, these older clients sought to enhance the livability of their backyard by incorporating inviting outdoor elements, including a paver patio, firepit, wooden pergola, and improved access to the neighborhood pond below. To bring this vision to life, a retaining wall was necessary to level and support the patio area, which would feature a large wooden pergola and a stone-veneered firepit. To enhance the rustic charm of the space, the retaining wall was designed with stone veneer, anchored by columns at either end, topped with gas lanterns for added ambiance. A 3-foot-high wrought iron fence and gate were planned to span the columns, creating an elevated aesthetic while seamlessly tying in with the existing 4-foot ornamental aluminum fence. Stone step treads would lead to the wrought iron gate, descending through repaired juniper beds via a wooden staircase to a deck and quaint boat dock on the water. Additionally, clearing brush and debris along the waterfront made way for fresh sod, transforming the area into a picturesque space to walk along the bank and enjoy the view.
Beyond the backyard enhancements, the clients also wanted to improve the condition of the pond by removing built-up brush and sediment, as well as addressing erosion issues in the upstream creek feeding the pond. This was accomplished by strategically removing excess sediment and debris from the pond to restore water depth and clarity. Additionally, large stones were placed in the upstream creek to slow the flow of water, reducing erosion and limiting the amount of sediment deposited into the pond over time. These measures helped to maintain cleaner water and improve the overall health of the pond ecosystem.
BEFORE AFTER
During construction, a few key upgrades greatly enhanced the final experience. First, the wooden staircase and dock were replaced with a more natural approach—stone step treads winding through the juniper beds with a wrought iron railing for balance. This change created a timeless aesthetic while preserving unobstructed views of the water. Additionally, the retaining wall was extended to include another stone-veneered column and gas lantern at the opposite end, ensuring both functional grade retention and a symmetrical appearance. However, the most impactful upgrade came in the form of replacing the wrought iron fence with glass panel fencing. This decision kept the view of the water completely open from beneath the pergola, elevating both the beauty and experience of the space.

2024 HILLSDALE
MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL
For this project, our clients in Mountain Brook, an affluent neighborhood known for its elegant homes and beautifully manicured landscapes, sought to transform their small, outdated backyard and deteriorating pool deck into a refined outdoor retreat. The design featured a polished pool deck and a putting green fit for an amateur golfer, with a focus on creating a sleek, modern look and maximizing the potential of the tight space.
Knowing that the existing pool deck required extensive renovations, including concrete repairs and new pours, I found a solution to address mismatched materials: resurfacing the concrete with a CTI product. This innovative material allows the client to select a base color and three highlight colors, creating a fully customized finish. Once applied, the result is seamless, making the old and new concrete indistinguishable, as if they were all poured at the same time.
The putting green was designed with an organic shape, featuring four holes and a surrounding fringe to define the inner putting surface, similar to a traditional golf course. The original plan included extra fringe space to accommodate an outdoor dining table and chairs; however, the clients later opted to extend the putting green surface instead.
Beyond design, I managed the project from start to finish, handling permitting and necessary paperwork. This required coordinating with local government officials and attending a variance meeting to secure approval for the new fence. During construction, I took a hands-on approach working alongside the construction crew to demo the site and overseeing subcontractors during the installation of the pool deck and putting green. One of the primary challenges during construction was the extensive demolition and removal of existing materials, followed by the critical task of properly preparing the site for installation.
In the side yard, we relocated three HVAC units onto a new, level concrete pad and enclosed them with a 4’ privacy fence for a cleaner, more polished look. This also improved backyard access allowing for an upgraded entrance with a new bluestone staircase leading through a cedar gate - replacing the previous deteriorating wooden deck entrance. The updated backyard fence serves as both a seamless privacy barrier and a safety feature atop the retaining wall that supports the backyard above the adjacent creek. With the modernized pool deck, fresh putting green, and improved backyard access, the final result is a sophisticated and functional outdoor space that complements the elegance of the Mountain Brook neighborhood. SPRINGHILL
BIRMINGHAM, AL 2023-24
Located in a gated community in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, this client sought a refined and low-maintenance front foundation planting with a formal yet organic aesthetic. The planting palette embraces Mediterranean influences with pebble planting beds and drought-tolerant selections. A symmetrical layout frames the entrance with two Pinus mugo shrubs, while Slender Deutzia provides neutral infill with delicate white blooms. Low-growing Blue Star Juniper sits perfectly beneath the window sills to the right and behind the Deutzia to the left, To create a structured yet elegant look, Italian Cypress trees anchor the corners of the home with their fastigiate growth. Lastly, Russian Sage adds a subtle lavender haze to the outer edges, while a single Gardenia shrub and a Sweet Tea Olive infuse the space with sweet fragrances throughout the year, evoking memories of the clients’ wedding day.
The landscape and hardscape elements combine to complement the home’s architectural features while ensuring easy upkeep. A redesigned pathway, featuring two sets of stairs and a paver sidewalk, offers a more convenient and inviting approach to the front door. Flanking the steps, natural stone walls terminate in veneered columns topped with gas lanterns for a timeless touch. Natural edging stone defines the beds and sidewalk, ensuring a crisp separation between the lawn and mulched areas. By opening up the lawn space and incorporating landscape lighting, the design enhances the home’s presence, offering a striking impression both day and night.
THOMASTON COURTYARD
CONTEXT
2022 THOMASTON, GA
Located in my hometown of Thomaston, this downtown space—currently a parking lot—has the potential to become a vibrant community landmark. Designed for a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, the proposal includes new hardscape, lush greenery, site furnishings, and artwork. A mural at the south entrance will celebrate Thomaston’s people and places, while entry signs from the east and west welcome visitors to Thomaston Courtyard. String lights illuminate a brick alley lined with artwork, leading to features like a turf game area, cozy seating under Fun 101’s Steel Structure, shaded dining behind Slices and Sabroso’s, and a central fountain. A wooden stage nestled between trees offers a charming venue for local musicians, creating a lively and inviting gathering space.
EXISTING SITE
CONCEPTUALS
This project was developed in cooperation with local government officials, adhering to city regulations and incorporating feedback from local business owners and citizens. After some preliminary meetings with the City of Thomaston’s Economic Director, the Downtown Development Board held a meeting where citizens of Thomaston gathered to share their concerns, particularly regarding safety and functionality. Their feedback shaped this design, addressing key issue. One major improvement is relocating outdated utilities underground for both aesthetics and safety. The parking lot will accommodate 33 spaces, including two wheelchair-accessible spots, thanks to the city’s purchase of additional property. Designated delivery zones will ease daily operations while maximizing parking. Grease traps will be moved underground per state law, and a new trash enclosure will accommodate dumpsters or a compactor for local businesses. Finally, to ensure long-term upkeep, the city will hire a dedicated maintenance worker, preserving the courtyard as a clean, safe, and vibrant gathering place for both residents and visitors.

CHATTAHOOCHEE HILLS, GA 2022
SECTION B-B’
SECTION C-C’
MASTER PLAN CREATED USING AUTOCAD AND ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
Farmstead is an undeveloped parcel within the exclusive Serenbe community, located southwest of Atlanta. According to their website, this neighborhood is set “among acres of preserved forests and meadows, with miles of nature trails connecting homes, restaurants, arts, and businesses.” Therefore, it was paramount to respect the values of the community by prioritizing the preservation of natural forested areas and minimizing environmental impact, ensuring that Farmstead remains in harmony with its serene surroundings. The site features an existing home, barn, and pasture near the entrance road, while the remaining land provided an opportunity for a thoughtfully planned residential expansion.
The goal of this project was to develop a master plan for five residential sites, incorporating a road and trail system that integrates the existing pond. The approach focused on identifying buildable areas that maximize views of the pond while maintaining privacy from both the main road and neighboring homes. This was achieved by selecting sites that required minimal leveling, orienting at least four homes toward the pond, and preserving essential tree cover to enhance privacy. Each home site also required designing an efficient septic field, adding to the challenge of selecting an adequate site. Using the advantage of existing topography, each home site is able to accommodate the septic system drainage field at the rear of the property.
A carefully designed road system winds around the site as the topography allows connecting each home in a loop that allows the road to remain narrow for minimal traffic. A trail system connects all five homes to nature and extends to the summit of the parcel, offering panoramic views of the entire area. Overall, this plan balances thoughtful development with environmental preservation, ensuring that Farmstead remains a harmonious extension of the Serenbe community while offering residents privacy, connectivity, and stunning natural views.

RURAL REVITALIZATION
2022
COMER, GA
Comer, Georgia, located just outside of Athens, is a growing town of over 1,500 residents. As more people seek a relaxed rural lifestyle, Comer’s downtown holds great potential for revitalization. This semester’s project focused on researching Comer’s history, assessing current needs, and envisioning a safer, more engaging, and livable streetscape. Comer has a growing population of artists and craftsmen who live and work downtown, yet many residents felt the area lacked the welcoming environment needed to sustain and attract businesses. This insight shaped my proposal to position Comer as a hub for the arts and local business.
At the heart of the redesign is “Art Alley”, a central walkway featuring murals, sculptures, and other artistic installations to celebrate local talent. Additional gathering spaces, such as courtyards and the park, provide more opportunities for community interaction. A fountain near Main Street acts as a sound buffer to traffic, while dense planting beds enhance downtown’s beauty and help slow vehicle speeds. Improved crosswalks and pathways further define pedestrian areas, ensuring accessibility and encouraging residents and visitors to fully experience Comer’s revitalized downtown.

LEFT: These precedent images showcase the intended use of the plazas and alleyways. A mural of the town’s people and places offers a sense of home and friendliness in a downtown, something that Comer could benefit from. Plazas located in downtown provide community gathering spaces that could be used in a variety of ways including outdoor dining, art festivals, rented event space and more. Finally, the use of art and landscape lighting is essential in transforming alleyways from dark, dingy spaces, into inviting places that people want to maintain.
