ANNA MARIA – For their community service, Anna Maria residents Lynn Brennan and Carl Augostini have been honored as the city of Anna Maria’s Distinguished Citizens of the Year for 2020. Brennan and Augostini were selected by a three-member volunteer committee that consisted of Bob Carter, Doug Copeland and Marie McCallister. The 2020 nominees also included Joan Voyles, her late husband, Dr. Carl Voyles, and Rod & Reel Pier employee Jimmy Malfese. The nominees were nominated recently by their fellow community members. Patricia Walter nominated Brennan and Ernest Brodersen nominated Augostini. Commission chair Carol Carter nominated the Voyles and Tripp Sebring nominated Malfese. Brennan and Augostini received their awards during the Thursday, Feb. 25 city commission meeting. Before recognizing this year’s recipients, Bob Carter said the annual award signifies “the demonstration of love for our city and for others and demonstrating that by volunteer service and in many other ways to help make Anna Maria a better place to live.” Before presenting Augostini with his award, Carter, a former award recipient himself, read aloud the nomination submitted by Brodersen. “For 12 years now, Carl has worked with discarded old bikes. He has repaired and refurbished them. Once a year, at Christmas, he donates them to needy people in Manatee County. He spends at least 20 or SEE CITIZEN OF YEAR, PAGE 27

MANATEE COUNTY – Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh’s role in the controversial Lakewood Ranch pop-up vaccination distribution site has prompted a sworn criminal complaint filed by Sarasotabased paralegal Michael Barfield.
