Visitors sometimes overlook the fishing village of Cortez as they drive by, not knowing its history and the way of life enjoyed by the residents of this small community on Sarasota Bay. ANNA MARIA – Ohio resident S. Weiss (no first name provided) was struck by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 2, while crossing Pine Avenue near Roser Memorial Community Church. According to Sgt. Weiss was conscious, alert and smiling while lying on the gurney as he was being wheeled to the EMS transport vehicle. The vehicle that struck Weiss was driven by Anna Maria resident R. Walter (no first name provided). According to Getman, Walter was issued a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Local resident Rich Bell witnessed the accident. “The guy was crossing in front of Roser Church, at the crosswalk,” Bell said. “He was hit by the side of the vehicle and he fell on his right shoulder. He got a couple scuffs, but he’s really lucky because it could have been way worse. If he hadn’t turned like he did, he would have went over the front of the car.”

ANNA MARIA – A city commission decision on a $50,000 funding request for proposed clam and seagrass restoration projects has been further delayed as opponents voice concerns. The additional delay is partially due to revisions made to the proposals that Ed Chiles and his associates presented to the city commission on Jan. 13, when Chiles and representatives from the Gulf Shellfish Institute, The Diatom Initiative and Sea & Shoreline requested $50,000 for the proposed restoration projects.
