Finnoo Marina City Arch.Uth | Competition entry | Urban Planning Team | Karaferas Giwrgos, Karali Natalia, Liapopoulou Anna, Supervisors | Ioannidis Kostantinos, Trova Vasso Period | Spring 2012 Location | Finnoo Marina City, Finland The main purpose of the project was the creation of a developed suburban center, which is located close to Helsinki, and which is able to combine both the advantages of the countryside and the privileges of the city. The basic influence on the design idea was the intention for smooth incorporation of the marine in the given location. This was approached by splitting the marina in individual parts, holding the logic of small islands and peninsulas that already exist in the location. Additionally, another goal that was set during the design, was the extention of the marina to the sea. So, the principal places of residence, as well as, the public spaces are oriented towards the open sea, taking advantage of the above landscape’s benefit. A factor that was seriously taken into consideration, was the factory, which is the landmark of the area. Thus, we wanted to extend this industrial zone by placing functions of the marina, such us the drystack storage and the boat hotels, inside the factory area. The main parking areas are situated in the same area too. A visual and an acoustic filter was placed between the factory site and the residential area. This was achieved by the development of the main road and the opening of a canal. Regarding the project’s functions, we wanted to mix the different uses, simulating the cities’ design idea, so that the project would not be a complex of different subject areas, but a miniature city. The same technique was followed in all functions, public, commercial, residential , recreational as well as in the requirements of the marina.
