PROPOSAL Music Park is a cohousing community designed for the Uptown Neighborhood in New Orleans, LA. This aggregation is a multi-use, diverse urban block that reimagines the suburban lifestyle, creating a high-density neighborhood block. Three existing strucutres must remain on the block. This community centers around musicians with designated places for practice and performance, public gathering, and private repose. Physically, Music Park is divergent from its uptown context, but the spirit of gathering around music weaves this community seamlessly into the city of New Orleans.

Music Boxes, private or group practice rooms, are scattered throughout the meandering ground floor green space. Paved walking paths connect the Music Boxes to each other and the vertical cores. All unpaved green areas are not covered by the structure above.

LEVEL 2

Each floor intertwines aparments of varying sizes and configurations. All have communal and private porch spaces, horizontal and vertical circulation, and cross ventilation. The porous plate structure of each floor dissolves as the levels increase, allowing natural light to enter the lower levels and ground floor.

URBAN FARMING ACTIVATOR BUILDINGS

Downtown Kansas City is encircled by interstate connections that cut off vital arteries to the city for pedestrians and cyclists. This condition closes off downtown and has exacerbated the urban sprawl of Kansas City residents. A large portion of usable lots in the downtown area are consumed by unnecessary parking lots. In an effort to revitalize the area and restore urban ecology, my partner, Lauren Lake, and I worked to develop a Master Plan called Cultivate Kansas City. The plan uses three strategies: The Eco-Boulevard, Urban Farming, and Activator Buildings.

The Eco-Boulevard is widened to 100 feet, sprawling to the edges of buildings to create a plaza. There are opportunities for wind turbines, urban plant growth, and safe gathering and commuting.

ACTIVATOR BUILDINGS Activator Buildings serve as anchor points throughout the Master Plan to draw in community and connect with existing cultural infrastructure. Activator buildings will be architecturally distinct from their adjacent buildings, setting them apart from other residential and commmerical buildings.

URBAN FARMING Originally conceived since Kansas City is a food desert, farming will be implemented on the site in four ways: a Farming Bridge, Edible Orchards, Vertical Gardens and Personal Terrace Gardens.

EXPERIMENTAL FARM

This Community Center is located within the Cultivate KC on the Eco-Boulevard.

The center has an experimental farm plot on the original farming bridge and labs within for additional testing. The center is for public gathering and enjoyment, but serves as an anchor point to all farming typologies on the site. Here, research is conducted on sustainable forms of agriculture that will be vital in both combating and surviving climate change. It is imperative to find new types of crop varieties to survive warming temperatures and farming methods that are more sustainable.

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS

The pink form of the building, which faces the eco-boulevard and downtown, will primarily serve the community. The brown form, which is directly adjacent to the farming bridge, represents private space for research and labs. Purple is the intermediary space, where community and farming coexist as meeting and teaching spaces.

To arrive at the massing of the building, one volume was assigned to community, intermediary, and farming, respectively. From those volumes, spaces were carved away to create paths for circulation. These voids allow space for the widened experiential stair that frames views of the farm and the city.

HISTORY OF THE SITE

Lake Peigneur sits atop land rich with resources for mining. Salt, oil, and other resources have been extracted from the area for years. However, in 1980, disaster struck when an exploratory drilling mission drilled directly into a salt mine located under the lake. The catastrophic results led to filling the salt mine with water, draining the entire lake into a sinkhole so powerful the nearby canal’s flow was reversed.

Once the lake refilled with salty water from the canal, the filling of the mine cavities resulted in a 400-foot high geyser. Existing on the site today are Live Oak Gardens. The underlying salt dome is used as a storage and hub facility for pressurizes natural gas.

Rules must be mastered before they can be broken. Existing techniques must be learned before new ones can be created.

This rendered perspective attempts to copy a perspectival image of St. Loo apartments

by OMMX as closely as possible, but from another view. Rhinoceros, V-Ray, Illustrator, and Photoshop were used to create the original image’s Copy Cat.

TOWER FANTASY Plaza Tower, an abandoned multi-use building in downtown New Orleans has become an icon of the city, and the subject of multiple artistic interpetations, known as Tower Fantasy. In conversation with the emulation of other successful techniques, this rendering of Plaza Tower attempts to use Du Pasquier’s hand drawn and painted “Australian Villa” to create a new vision of Plaza Tower using only digital media.
