To the second edition of this handy guide to services, groups and events at St Albans’ churches. This guide is not an exhaustive list but covers the churches which offer some sort of hospitality or groups for older people in St Albans. The guide is aimed at people who are 65+, offering details on daytime weekday activities which are largely accessible by public transport. The events are generally low cost, and in some cases free. All the listings are hosted by churches from a range of denominations. I hope this information will provide a handy reference, and encourage you to find out more about what the churches locally offer older people. I would urge you to check online for up-todate information (this guide was published in September 2022) or call the number listed if you need further details about any groups or events. Some activities need pre-booking and are marked with an orange dot but others, marked with a green dot, you can just drop in on
Welcome!
Hello, my name is Maggie Dodd and I’m an Anna Chaplain in St Albans

This edition also has a 4-page feature (p16-19) on the support available locally and nationally for winter fuel costs and the cost of living. I know many of you will be worried about how you’ll manage over the colder months. I hope you find the feature useful.

You may not have heard about Anna Chaplaincy. It’s a model of care which seeks to accompany older people at this age and stage of their lives. It is an ecumenical, community-based chaplaincy promoting the spiritual welfare of older people.

It involves visiting older people wherever they may be living, whether in residential and nursing homes, sheltered housing, retirement complexes or other private homes. The emphasis is on spiritual support but, clearly, people’s practical struggles will also play a part in their overall well-being. St Albans Anna Chaplaincy is supported by Marlborough Road Methodist Church and Hatfield Road Methodist Church, working closely with our friends at St Peter’s Church. It seeks to support older people here in St Albans.

The Cathedral has a thriving congregation and a group of Lay Pastoral Assistants who support older members of their community, with phone calls, visits and sometimes Home Communion.

The new Exhibition Area in the Cathedral is worth a visit and tells the story of Alban and the history of the Cathedral. If history and heritage is your kind of thing, there is a variety of Adult Education courses and talks which explore faith, history and culture. Many are available online via Zoom, so you can join a course without leaving your own home, very useful in the winter months. Check the latest list of courses on the Cathedral’s website under ‘Learning’.

As an Anna Chaplain, I spiritually support older people in St Albans and I’m looking to put together a group of people (Anna Friends) who would like to support people in later life. This could be volunteering to chat and make tea at various clubs, supporting care home worship or visiting people in need of friendship and support. Does this sound like something you would like to do?

Would you like to be involved with Anna Chaplaincy?
There are a growing number of people in our communities and care homes who would value friendship and support. This past couple of years have been difficult for many, some people have lost confidence or mobility, or are living in care homes which have had restrictions on visitors and are now trying to re-establish church services and pastoral visiting.

If so, please do get in touch with me. Volunteering with vulnerable older people means you would require a DBS check (we can arrange that for you) and a safeguarding training session, but a willing and kind attitude is the most important thing.
Contact Maggie Dodd, Anna Chaplain, by calling 07462 586773 or email: mrsmaggiedodd@gmail.com or visit Facebook for more information: www.facebook.com/AnnaChaplaincyStAlbans

Affirmation - that we are all held by God and that we can trust in His abiding presence.
Music - is an important key to memory and a familiar constant in Memory Worship.
WHAT IS MEMORY WORSHIP AND WHO IS IT FOR?
Sensory activities - can create pathways back to happy life memories.
Craft - creative skills can be retained and even learned by people living with dementia.

“At Memory Worship we believe in a God who accepts us and meets us where we are today”
Worship can be a channel for recalling the past, creating feelings of comfort, familiarity and spiritual fulfilment.
Worship for those with and without Dementia

MEMORY WORSHIP
Tell me the old, old story - a short Bible reading, using a well-known, well-loved passage.

We all have a continuing need to worship and experience a loving encounter with God. The formal part of a Memory Worship service lasts 30 minutes before leading into a craft activity and hospitality. Everyone has an opportunity to connect with their own creativity by participating, and our dedicated team of community volunteers are always on hand with tea, cake and fellowship.
Memory Worship is a space where people with or without dementia can approach God, worship, and feel God’s caring presence together.
