The Gainesville Square has come to life in the last two years, spawning new shops and businesses — including more than a dozen new restaurants. But Gainesville is not alone. All across North Georgia, new restaurants are opening, from Mexican and Latin-Asian infusion to pizza and Mediterranean cuisine.
In this edition, we’ve partnered with nearly 20 local restaurant to showcase their menus and their ambience. We hope you’ll use this guide to help find your next dining experience, and please let the restaurants know you found out about them from this guide.

Why did you decide to open Mediterranean Breeze Restaurant?
“The lack of healthier options like Mediterranean food. We want to add something different and I also wanted to bring some nightlife to this area.”
Tell us about your menu.
“The menu is made from scratch. What makes this restaurant different from others like it is the ‘American touch’ I added to the menu. The only rice served at Mediterranean Breeze is basmati rice, which is an aromatic slender-grained rice that originates in India. I won’t budge on this ingredient and his reasoning is simple: Only the best for his customers. It’s the best rice ever, it’s so light You can eat two servings and not be full. How involved are you in the kitchen with your staff?
“I want our guests to enjoy food that is made from scratch, and of course it’s me making all of the food. It’s not like I just put a menu out and I don’t cook anything. I have to see every plate that comes out of the kitchen to make sure everything looks right.”

Cotto is a modern Italian concept located in the Gainesville Renaissance building in downtown Gainesville with an outdoor patio space to enjoy.
Scott and Alexis Kinsey have many years experience in the cuisine and restaurant industry. Scott got his training as a chef in France where he did his apprenticeship and has traveled extensively throughout the world learning and trying new ideas and picking up talent with world class cuisine. Alexis has worked in a restaurant since she was 14 and is a ‘front of the house’ expert from her many years in restaurant experiences.
“Doug Ivester approached us about opening Taqueria Tsunami in the Renaissance and this was about three years ago now,” Alexis Kinsey said. “I loved this corner of the building when we came in and looked at this space, and I’m like, ‘I want this side’. And he said, ‘Well, I’m saving that side for an Italian concept’. And I said, ‘Well, we can do Italian.’”
We have your wonderful classic Italian dishes like lasagna, polenta and risotta. We also have an authentic wood fire oven that gives us the chance to play around with dough, giving you that nice ‘char’ on the dough. It has that really great comfort Italian feel but with a bit of a modern take. Reservations required.

Tepache is a traditional Mexican drink that dates back to the pre-columbian Mexico and was a popular drink among the people of central Mexico. The base of Tepache was originally corn, but today, the Tepache drink has a more modern recipe. Tepache is a fermented beverage made from the peel and the rind of pineapples. It is sweetened with piloncillo or brown sugar and is seasoned with powdered cinnamon and served cold. It is stored in barrels to make the fermentation process go faster. Tepache can still be found today in Mexico and served chilled by street vendors.
The pineapple symbolizes an expression of “welcome” in the south and the appreciation of friendship and hospitality.

It’s a Latin/Asian fusion of the two to create a really nice combination of what people love about the two cuisines. We have tacos, rice bowls and quesadillas and avocado egg rolls, s’mores egg rolls and appetizers all made in house and fresh every day. It’s also a really good price point for great fresh food and delicious cocktails and I think that’s what has made us so successful.
Menu favorites include our award-winning shrimp tempura taco, avocado egg rolls and Asian nachos. A meal would not be complete without a margarita - our Jalapeño Cilantro and Mango Sangria are among of our favorites.

When did Consuelo open?
In Fall 2022, Consuelo brought elevated (and absolutely delicious) Mexican cuisine to the historic square in downtown Gainesville. Owners Abigail Guzman and Jose Perez (husband and wife) named the new endeavor after Jose’s grandmother, Consuelo.
What
Abigail and Jose wanted a little piece of Mexico in Gainesville, serving authentic Mexican cuisine, curated craft cocktails, and a unique dining experience. The menu is made up of family recipes.

Johnny’s BBQ first opened in Gainesville GA in 1990.
Johnny and Deborah Mallard were the original owners.
Tharpe and Judy Ward purchased the business in the spring of 1995 and continued the tradition of serving Gainesville and North Georgia for 25 years until their much deserved retirement in 2019. Johnny’s was then acquired by Tharpe and Judy’s nephew/employee of 20 years Zack Ivey who is continuing the tradition of serving delicious BBQ.
We offer eat dine in, carry out and deliveries when available. We also offer onsite catering and have catered events ranging from 50 to 1000 people.
We smoke fresh pork, beef, brisket, chicken ribs and wings daily with hickory. We also serve great sides like Brunswick stew, coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, chips, and hot crinkle cut fries.
