Tentative Program (7 Days) Great Himalayan National park Trekking. Arrival lunchtime. Welcome drink and settle down in the dorms. After lunch rest to overcome the travel fatigue. Evening introduction to the park by means of a slideshow and a wildlife movie. Bonfire Dinner o/n Sai Ropa Rest House. Local Sight Seeing in and around Sai Ropa- The children interact with the local villagers and get an insight into the style of living of the Seraj People. They pay a visit to the local trout-fishing farm to learn about the lifecycle of the fish. They are also taken to the GHNP medicinal plant nursery and told about various high altitude medicinal plants. They also do river crossing and come back in a flying fox over the tirthan river. Evening Documentary show on the GHNP / snow leopard. A pre-trek excursion to the hills opposite Sai Ropa. This five-hour journey is supposed to acclimatize the students for the trek and also to see that what will be the pace of walking/ load carrying ability of the students. After having packed lunch they decent to the base for an evening session of some indigenous games which are both informative and fun. Trek Begins- SaiRopa-Gushaini-Rolla Walk from Gushaini to Rolla along Tirthan River up south-facing slope camp at Rolla, in tents and trekker huts of the GHNP Rolla-Shilt walk from Rolla (1963m) to Shilt (2900m) up very steep track. Narrow zigzag up 40-degree slope made for very tough going. Camp around Shilt hut. Afternoon follows a downhill through a very thick forest full of Monal Pheasant. (A large plump pheasant with a loud, ringing call. Males are mainly iridescent blue, green on the mantle and rufous on the neck, with a white patch on the lower back and an orange tail). It is a prominent bird and the state bird of Himachal, well known to the local villagers and often seen by the tourists and trekkers.). Evening campfire with local dance performed by the staff accompanying you on the trek. O/n Rolla Rolla- Gushaini – Sai Ropa : Today we trek back for a well deserved bath and rest at the Sai Ropa Guest house. Evening would be spent giving a presentation on what was seen during the trek. Ideally I would give them a small project on flora/fauna which is easy and will keep them busy during the trek.o/n Sai Ropa. SaiRopa – Kullu Valley- Manali The visit would be incomplete without taking the children to Manali and doing some sightseeing. Manali – Sightseeing: Hadimba Temple, Vasisht hot springs during the day and evening departure to Delhi by Bus. If Manali seems too crowded which it will be one may even go to Kullu - Naggar/ Manikaran Hot water springs, which are less, crowded. The GHNP has a dormitory in Manali, which may be used by the children. Alternatively they could be given space at the Western Himalayan Mountaineering Institute where I have good contacts. o/n Dormitory Manali or one can depart for Delhi by night bus Morning arrival at Delhi. Catch train to Gujrat .
