Building Not Just a Business, but a Community

Thoughts from Dr. Aaron Rickelman

THANK

A Legacy of People & Progress

I have often wondered how successful organizations withstand the test of time. I have witnessed many businesses flourish and then perish within 3 years. Although the Ankeny Area Chamber is a non-profit, it still operates as a business. With customers, employees, board of directors and service as its product, the Chamber is susceptible to all the pitfalls of any business.

This year, we celebrate the Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce’s 75th year of supporting our community and the businesses that drive our economy. Whether you realize it or not, everyone reading this has played a part in this success story. We thank you for your direct support of the Chamber and your ongoing support of our businesses and community.

While many have played a part in the Chamber’s story over the last 75 years, for eight months, I had the opportunity to volunteer as Interim CEO. An opportunity to play a part in the Ankeny Area Chamber’s story and set the stage for another 75 years of success. Over the years, I have seen the Chamber from many different perspectives. While there were ups and downs, one constant always held true: while the mission of the organization was solid, it was the people that made the difference.

If you get an opportunity, look back at the people who participated in the success and those who led us to where we are today. Business owners, board members, employees, and many others created the

climate and culture that is the Chamber. When I walk into the office, I see pictures, names on plaques, and awards, and I am grateful to say that I have met a few and call many friends and colleagues. I would guess that many reading this would say the same, and if not, I encourage you to join us for the next 75 years and make those connections.

I am grateful to the Chamber board for giving me the opportunity to lead the team, and thankful to my wife, Laura, for the sacrifice of her time and talent while we worked through some stressful days. Without her support and expertise, the story would have looked a lot different.

I have always maintained that success is about perspective. I have not experienced 75 years, and the only perspective I have is this. Halley’s Comet last appeared in 1986, the year I graduated from high school, and will come around again after 75 years (2061). I was young and didn’t realize I could witness something that might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I intend to see it next time. I encourage you to participate in the next 75 years of the Ankeny Area Chamber and not miss out on the opportunity.

Leading with Service

Building Not Just a Business, but a Community

What values do I bring to my role as Chairman?

As Chairman, I believe in servant leadership. Our role is not for recognition. It is to be of service.

We exist to represent our members, advocate for growth, and help ensure Ankeny remains a place where businesses do more than open. They thrive.

That philosophy guided the development of our new five-year strategic plan. The board selected a vision statement that declares;

The Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce is focused on being a trusted connector that drives business growth, expands opportunity, and strengthens a united, prosperous Ankeny community.

Including the word “trusted” matters. Trust is the hull of the ship. Without it, nothing holds together. The Chamber’s new 5-year plan plan emphasizes intentional growth, stronger relationships, and meaningful engagement. It focuses on sustainability, transparency, and accountability so our members and community see the Chamber as a partner, not just an organization.

Why did we choose Ankeny?

My wife Abbi & I opened our doors of Designed 2 Move in Ankeny in 2015 with a simple goal: serve people well and help them move, live, and perform better.

Ankeny was not a random choice for us. It was personal. Abbi’s father, Gregg Sunner, was a longtime Ankeny business owner and served as Chairman of the Chamber Board back in 1985. Service to the community was part of her upbringing, and she carried that mindset into our business from day one.

When we first opened, Abbi was determined that we should join the Chamber. I was hesitant. I grew up in a small rural town in Illinois where the business culture was very different. I honestly wondered what the Chamber could do for me.

As in many good marriages, my wife was right. We joined in the year we opened, 2015.

We showed up to events. We focused on connection. We started serving where we could. As we shifted our focus from just building a business to serving the community around us, Designed 2 Move grew faster than we anticipated.

The growth was not accidental. It was relational. One of the biggest turning points was our first Chamber event, a ribbon cutting at our office.

What started as a simple celebration opened the door to relationships. Those relationships turned into friendships, referrals, and opportunities to serve. Over time, many of the people we met through the Chamber became not just professional contacts, but close friends.

Looking back more than a decade later, the impact is clear. Chamber involvement influenced both my personal and professional growth. It shaped how I lead our team. It expanded my understanding of the business environment in Ankeny. It connected me to leaders across the city and the region.

The lesson for me was simple. Business growth is not transactional. It is relational.

How did the Chamber become part of our story?

When we first joined, I did not expect to become heavily involved. Then I started attending more events and joined some committees. Over time, I served as a TRC volunteer, a committee lead, an ambassador, a board member, and now Chairman of the Board.

Each step gave me a deeper understanding of what the Chamber really does: At its core, the Chamber is about connection. It is about bringing like-minded people together and helping them learn from one another. It is about surrounding yourself with others who want to serve their customers and their community well.

Dr. Gregg Sunner 1985 Board Chairman
Dr. Aaron Rickelman 2026 Board Chairman

Personally, the biggest benefit has been relationships. Many Chamber members and staff have become close friends. We have traveled together, served together, and supported one another through both business and life.

Professionally, the impact has been just as strong. Chamber involvement helped us grow our network, understand city and regional initiatives, and become more intentional leaders in our own business. The leadership skills I use with my staff today were shaped by my experiences serving on Ankeny Area Chamber committees and the board.

How has Chamber involvement shaped my leadership style?

If you try to grow a business in isolation, you are on an island. You can do your own marketing and outreach, and you might succeed. But when you surround yourself with others who share your values, the growth multiplies. That is the power of community.

Serving on committees and the board has changed the way I lead. I believe leadership means stepping into the challenge first. It means guiding from the front, not directing from a distance.

When problems arise, I do not want to say, “You handle this.” I want to say, “Let’s take this step together.” That approach has shaped both how I lead at Designed 2 Move and how I serve the Chamber.

The Chamber’s structure supports that mindset.

Committees bring like-minded people together to share ideas. Members learn from one another’s successes and mistakes. The knowledge in the room becomes greater than what any one person could bring alone.

What are my hopes for the future?

For Designed 2 Move, the goal is simple. Continue serving our patients well and improving outcomes. Everything else grows from that foundation.

For the Chamber and the business community, my hope is for continued collaboration. I want to see businesses mentoring one another, referring one another, and investing in each other’s success. When that happens, the tide rises for everyone.

Ankeny is in a strong position. We have engaged business owners, committed community leaders, and a Chamber focused on connection and growth. If we continue to work together with a servant mindset, the future is bright.

I often tell people that being involved in the Chamber is a leap of faith. You have to put energy in before you get energy out. But when you do, the results can be lifechanging.

For me, the Chamber has been more than a networking group. It has been a source of friendships, leadership growth, and community impact. It helped shape our business and our family’s life in Ankeny. What does “Live, Work, Play, Inspire Ankeny” mean to me?

For my family, this phrase is not just a slogan. It describes our daily life.

We live here. Our business is here. Our kids are involved in activities here. We attend church here. We go to the gym here. Our closest friends are here. When we need a service or want to go out to eat, we look first to local businesses.

There is a deep level of trust that comes from doing business with people you know. When Chamber members work together, refer one another, and show up for one another, that trust grows.

I often think about the phrase, “A rising tide lifts all ships.” When businesses support each other, the entire community benefits. Standards rise. Opportunities grow. The ecosystem becomes stronger.

But a ship does not move with just a captain. It takes a crew. A crew that trusts one another and works in rhythm. That is how the Chamber operates. The board and staff are not here to command. We are here to serve, listen, connect, and help chart a course forward.

Innovation in a Constantly Changing World

Through strategic investments, our goal at Murphy Enterprizes is to participate in the reimagining of our communities. We keep an eye towards the future, while maintaining a strong foundation learned from our past.

"Having owned multiple small businesses and serving on many diverse community oriented boards, I have had the opportunity to assess problems from multiple different perspectives. It is important to continue to engage in our community and mentor future leaders. Murphy Enterprizes is a conduit that can help shape our community."

A Night 75 Years In The Making

“The history and future of our community depend on what we do today. Only time will tell if it was time well spent. I want to thank each of you for the time you’ve given, and I hope that in the years ahead we can all say it was time well spent.

This evening, we will honor just a few who truly embody that idea. Congratulations to them, and thank you to the Chamber of Commerce for 75 years of dedication. And thank you for sharing your time with me.”

– Trent Murphy, Murphy Enterprizes Presenting Sponsor and 2025 Interim Chamber CEO

“I just want to say thank you. To our chamber staff, our Board, and most importantly, to you, our members, for believing in this organization and in each other.

This past year hasn’t been easy. There were challenges, uncertainties, and moments when showing up took more effort than usual. And yet, you showed up anyway.

Our staff showed up every day with professionalism, creativity, and heart, even when plans had to change, resources were stretched, and the path forward wasn’t always clear. You leaned in, adapted, and kept this chamber moving forward.

To our board and to Mr. Trent Murphy, thank you for your leadership and your belief in this mission. You asked hard questions, made thoughtful decisions, and never lost sight of the businesses we serve.

To every single one of our members, thank you for believing in the Ankeny Area Chamber. Thank you for investing your time, energy, money, and trust. You didn’t just show up this year, you showed up in a big way. You attended, you participated, you collaborated, and you supported one another in ways that truly define what a chamber should be.

This chamber is people, relationships, and shared commitment. Because of you, it will continue to grow, lead, and thrive. Thank you.”

-Tony Mills, 2025 Chamber Board Chairman, Apex Sway

“As Chairman of the Board, I have the honor of representing a Board of Directors whose primary role is not recognition, but service. We exist to serve as a liaison for our members, to advocate for growth, and to help ensure that Ankeny remains a place where businesses don’t just open, but thrive. At its core, the Chamber is about connection. And connection is powerful.”

– Dr. Aaron Rickelman, 2026 Chamber Board Chairman

“This truly means a lot to me, especially with my kids here tonight. No one goes into local government for the attention, so to be recognized like this is very meaningful.

About 20 years ago, I chose economic development over a fast track to corporate America because I wanted to help make communities better places to live, visit, and do business. That is still what drives me every day.

Thank you to the Chamber and staff for all you do, and to the small business owners in this room. You are the ones creating jobs, making investments, and taking risks. Your work does not go unnoticed. We are a great community today, but there is even more potential to come. That is because of the people in this room and across this city.

I am only as successful as the city team around me. It takes many departments working together, and I am grateful for their support, as well as for our city council and leadership. There is still so much opportunity ahead.

Most of all, thank you to my family, and my wife Katie. This community still has so much opportunity ahead, and I am grateful to be part of it. Thank you.”

– Derek Lord 2025 Employee of the Year, City of Ankeny

“Truly, thank you. My family is here, and I’m grateful for all of you.

My journey began years ago, when I came to the United States with one suitcase and a dream of a better life. I wanted to build something that mattered, create a family, and find a place to call home. I found that here, because of this community.

You supported me, not just in business, but as a person. You welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like family. That means everything to someone who came here with a dream of building a business, raising a family, and leaving a legacy.

People ask why I stay so involved. It’s simple, I want it to matter. It’s our job to build a legacy in our community. So I encourage you to do a little better every day. Lean on one another. Build this community. Volunteer. Help people you don’t even know. Because that’s what you all did for me.

And here I am today, standing in front of you, beyond grateful. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

– Sue Hudson 2025 Small Business Person of the Year, IV Nutrition

TABLE BEVERAGE SPONSOR

“I’m super excited to be part of this community, and I’m so thankful for the connections I’ve made. Through the Ankeny Young Professionals, I’ve met some truly great friends. I’m excited for everything Ankeny has to offer and grateful to be here. Thank you!”

“First, thank you to my wife Linda—my partner, my everything—and to my incredible team. I learned early from my dad that success comes from your team. Individual success is fleeting, but when you build a strong team, everything else flows naturally. Please join me in recognizing them tonight.

I also want to thank my parents, Dolly and Charlene, and my daughter Meredith. To even be mentioned alongside the giants of this community is a true honor. Ankeny has been my home since 1965, a small town with huge potential. It’s where I’ve raised my family, built a business, and had the privilege to serve in the Iowa legislature.

As I watched others receive awards tonight, I was inspired by the young, ambitious people stepping up for the future of this city. Community involvement doesn’t require wealth, it requires giving your time and talent. When we do that, we build something far greater than ourselves.

Ankeny is not a suburb. We’re a community that stands on our own, with a spirit all our own. Keep that spirit alive, keep serving, and keep building. I hope to continue contributing for a few more years, and I am deeply honored by this recognition. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

– Jeffrey Lamberti 2025 Lifetime Impact Award Lamberti, Murphy & Strong, P.C.

“Thank you so much, everyone. I had no idea this was coming, and I’m very honored to be up here tonight. My kids and parents are here, and that means a lot to me.

Honestly, I don’t know what to say other than how much I appreciate this. There are so many people in this community who are just as deserving, if not more. I recently attended the police department’s awards banquet, and it was incredible. Even during a short tour of the fire station, I saw firsthand how busy and dedicated these first responders are. People who step up in remarkable ways, rescuing others and serving our community.

So my one ask is this: over the next year, think about the people who inspire you, the ones who go above and beyond, and take the time to nominate them. There are a lot of people who deserve to be on this stage.

Thank you again. I truly appreciate it.”

– Matt Davis, 2025 Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Neumann Brothers, Inc, & Ankeny City Council Member

“What an honor it is to be up here. I’m so grateful to be part of the Chamber Ambassadors. We often say we’re the welcoming arm of the chamber, and I truly love getting to celebrate milestones with our businesses. Hearing their stories, being part of ribbon cuttings and grand openings, and everything that comes with being an ambassador has meant a lot to me.

The ambassador committee is amazing, and I’m constantly inspired by the other ambassadors. I’m just really honored to be part of this team.

The chamber has played a huge role in my growth and development over the last few years. My husband, Gabriel, is the owner of ActionCOACH, and as the chamber’s education sponsor, it’s been a wonderful partnership. It has helped us grow, and we hope we’ve helped other members grow as well.

The chamber staff is incredible, and it’s been great getting to know everyone. Thank you again. It’s truly an honor to serve as an ambassador.”
