PALLAS 2018 T H E E D I T O R I A L T E A M

HELLO FROM THE

EDITOR ELOUISE VAN WYK

Congratulations! We successfully made it to the fourth term! It feels like yesterday that I was moving in to Minerva for the very first time. Excited and nervous about what lies ahead in the year to come. It seems crazy to think that now we have already completed an entire semester and that the last exams and the summer holidays are right around the corner.Â

But instead of boring you with more cheesy quotes or exam motivation (we have interesting and far better written articles in the Pallas on that topic) I'd like to take this movement to thank you, the person reading this, and all of Minerva for the privilege of being the editor of the Pallas this year. It has been so fun to not only participate in the "Inblynaweek" activities, dance the night away at "Huis Dans" and Summer Dance, scream "Mineeeerva!", proudly wear my merch at derby week or sing my heart out at SU Acapella, but to be able to capture these special moments and, together with an amazing team of talented writers, compile the Pallas. Thank you to the amazing team of writers and creative thinkers for make the Pallas such a success and fun project to work on Every year has it's highs and lows, but I sincerely hope that the good memories we have made together as Minervianers outweighed the lows. I wish every single one you the best of luck with the last little bit of the year. As I have said in my previous Pallas letters: time flies. So make the most of what is left of 2018 and use every moment to get a step closer to achieving your goals. You can do it. Although this is my last "letter form the editor" for a while, it is not the end of my journey with the Pallas. In my position as a House Committee member for 2018/2019 I will be in charge of publications and I cannot wait to see the Pallas flourish and grow in the year to come. I hope that you will continue to read and grow with us! Thank you for reading the Last Pallas of 2018. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as the editorial team and I enjoyed writing, editing and compiling it.

FOOD & HEALTH BY: JEANNÉ RABIE

Guess what!? It’s September! That means that it’s time to kiss the hot chocolate and comfort food of winter good bye. Now is the time to get that summer body ready by eating healthy and simultaneously feeling rejuvenated for the new season! The top 3 diets, in my opinion, are currently: the Low Carb/ Ketogenic-, Mediterranean- and Vegetarian Diets. Each of above is now going to be analyzed by explaining the basic guidelines for following the specific diet and the different health benefits which can be reaped by each.

FOOD & HEALTH

The Low Carb/ Ketogenic Diet What you can eat in abundance: All meat, fish, eggs, vegetables growing above ground and healthy fats which includes olive oil, coconut oil, avocados and butter. When your meal consists out of the above, you can eat until you are satisfied. The best thing is that you don’t have to count your calories or weigh you’re food. What to avoid: Sugar and all starchy foods. The most obvious being: bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, chips, cake, cookies, rusks, sweets, and soft drinks. As fruit contains natural sugar in the form of fructose, it must be eaten in moderation. The best fruit options are blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries with the darker coloured berries containing the most antioxidants and health benefits. The following are a list of foods commonly mistaken for low carb, but which should be avoided: Corn, sweet potato, beetroot, sweetened yogurt, juice, gluten-free baked goods and most fruits (especially bananas, raisins, dates, mangoes and pears).

Although fruits are high in anti oxidants, it’s also high in sugar- but by eating a lot of vegetables you would still get all your vitamins. A common mistake that people make when following this diet, is to include low fat products (for example low fat yogurt) into the diet, thinking that it would compliment the low carb aspect of the diet. This is a big mistake. When you don’t consume a lot of carbs, you must consume healthy fats to compensate. If you don’t, you will get hungry! There is no scientific reason to fear fat- as long as it is healthy fats and not trans fats (typically found in margarines which is hydrogenated fats) or refined vegetable- or seed oils which causes inflammation in the intestines which actually hinders weight loss. The benefits of going on this diet includes: Weight loss. Low-Carb Diets kills your appetite- in a good way! In other words you never feel deprived or yeaarning for food. Increased levels of HDL (the “good”) cholesterol Drastic reduction in blood sugar spikes and insulin levels

FOOD & HEALTH

The Mediterranean diet

Vegetarian

Numerous studies have now shown that the Mediterranean diet can cause weight loss and help prevent heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes, premature death and maybe the best - it encourages relaxation! This diet is based on foods that people traditionally ate in countries like Italy and Greece in 1960.

One of the most popular trends now are also vegetarianism. Studies have shown that a vegetarian diet’s benefits includes that it may improve your mood, reduce symptoms of diabetes, reduces symptoms of cardio vascular disease and that vegetarians usually have low cholesterol. Now to state the obvious, to reap these benefits you will have to give up all meat.

Eat: Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, potatoes, whole grains, breads, herbs, spices, fish, seafood and lots and lots of extra virgin olive oil. Eat in moderation: Poultry, eggs, cheese and yogurt. Eat only rarely: Red meat. For those only interested in eating more healthy, feeling more healthy and shedding a few extra kilo’s, the Mediterranean diet would be a great way to start, but because of the higher carbohydrate intake due to the included grains, fruits and pasta, the Mediterranean diet can be considered as being used as a springboard to ultimately move to a low carb diet which would bring the ultimate results (from my personal research).

Now, one of the biggest myths about vegetarianism is that you don’t consume enough protein. But actually, meat eaters consume more protein than totally necessary- so if you eat a varied diet which include eggs, cheese, beans and nuts, you will be fine! By choosing one of these healthy eating programs that suits your personal preference, you’ll be able to follow a more healthy lifestyle to ensure that you look and feel at your best!

GET TO KNOW MINERVA'S HEAD MENTOR BY: ANJA BESTER

• First, middle and last name? Ane Wolhuter • Milk or dark choclatte Milk Chocolate • Who do you call when you are upset? My mom, obviously! • TV or Book Book! • What was the last thing you ate? Burger King. • Spender or saver? Saver for the win. • Fearfull or fearless? Definitely working on being more fearless. • Salty or sweet? Sweet. • Details or big picture? Details. • Kill bugs or try to save them? Kill them! Wow, not even a question. • Is the glass halve full or halve empty? Its as full as you make it.

Favourite leadership quote? Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It's about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work. -Robin S. Sharma

What is your vision for the mentors of 2018/2019? My vision for Minerva and the mentoring system is to by the end of 2019, to have had the most well integrated group of newcomers that Minerva has ever had. The diversity of girl’s that enter Minerva every year is exponential. They do not all fall into the same category, context or frame of reference and therefore, for many, the prospect of Stellenbosch and residence life is totally foreign and unknown. People get lost through the cracks every year and therefore it is necessary to set up systems to ensure the smoothest transition possible. I have the greatest passion for the group of girls that enters Minerva as newcomers every year. I want to settle their fears and make them feel welcome and at peace the moment that they enter our doors. I also want to continue to strive towards achieving my vision for not just Minerva but on campus and in other men and women’s residences, providing the opportunity for sufferers of mental illness to voice hurts in a safe and encouraging environment, to receive practical help on overcoming the challenges they face as a result of mental illness and to ultimately realise that they are not alone and that there is help available. What is the most important quality a mentor has to have? Her most important quality would be her own internal strength. This is what gives her the ability to push through difficult situations and deal with conflict like the mature adult that she is. This is also what allows her to work diligently for the betterment of her mentees and allows her to admit when she is wrong. Her internal strength is what others rely on in times when it seems like a hopeless situation and pushes her to stand out from the crowd in her own unparalleled way.

MINERVA WATCHES Have seen or are watching at the moment (case of 50 ladies):

MINERVA'S MEMORY LANE The Minervaners of today still feel the presence of the Minervaners of the past in the little things, like the traditions we hold, our house song and the little signatures and messages scribbled into our cupboards. For me personally, when I signed my name in that thick book by candle light and I received my toga and Klingel, I felt like a part of history. I was privileged enough to have the opportunity to talk to some past Minervaners about their times in these hallowed halls. I present to you, fellow Minervaner, histories of women who were in exactly your position right now many years ago. If these stories don’t make you feel the sorority inside of you, I don’t know what will.

BENETTE GOEDHART (BA HONOURS SOCIAL WORK 1977-1980) “I was one of the first students -only around 30 students at that time - to complete BA Honours in Social Work. 1980 was first year for 4-year degree. We had a fantastic time. Rules were hectic. We had to be in by 8 pm. Voordeur, and klokkie were a Dennebol (pinecone) on a rope hanging from your window. Many a guy serenaded me. A few tokkelokke predikant (Theology students/ preacher). They loved to sokkie. Like me. I was a good dancer. Back then, all my boyfriends tended to be engineers. As First-years, we were orientated by packing all of our stuff and going to Jan S Marais Park in the middle of the night. That was fun. Seniors also made us go on a blind date. I had so many I had to give let some of them down. I was "skaam eintlik ‘n introvert." Social Work kept us busy as well! All that practical work! I had: Private Law 1, Afrikaans 1, Psychology 2, Sociology 3 and Social Work 4 I completed my master’s degree in Social Work Supervision in 1993. Then I met Paul Goedhart, who I eventually married. He was a high school romance. He walked me to Church every Sunday in University. He proposed but I only said “yes’ after a year. I am a former Director of Child and Family Welfare in George. I am still doing Trauma Counselling as a volunteer and I’m on Neighbourhood watch committee member George North Paul Goedhart is a Civil Engineer in George at Tuiniqua. We have 4 daughters. Jeani (19) who is first year at Stellenbosch now doing a BA Humanities and she’s in Aristea. Salome (29) is a Chartered Accountant, past Minervaner, as well as past HK. She’s marrying a preacher from Tuks (so it runs in the family). Tanja-Mari died age (28) of Malaria. She was in Minerva and on the HK and even received a medal for top student in Bsc Agriculture – a Dean’s Medal. We are truly blessed.”

KARIN VAN WYK (BEDUACTION 1987-1989) “What I remember of our times in Minerva are the late-night chats around a cup of Milo, a box of rusks and wonderful friends!”

BACK THEN: 1989

MRS AFRICA GLOBE CLASSIC 2016

RONEL VAN HEERDEN (B. HUISHOUDKUNDE ED 1982-1985) Ek het in Februarie 1982 by Minerva aangekom. Dit was my gunsteling. Ek dink die lewe toe was minder gekompliseerd as vandag. Studente lewe is net soos skool.

SECTION 7 IN 1982

RONEL NOW

y t e f a S s p Ti ROOM:

Keep your rooms locked (or you can fake lock them, nobody knows whenever its really locked or not.) If you live on the ground floor, never leave you windows open if you’re not awake inside the room. If there is a new cleaning lady, with normal clothes, let your section HK know.

IN RES: Set a timer when you put your washing in the machine, then right before it finishes you can be there and no one can touch your clothes. . Keep you bicycle locked, under the thom hall stairs or in the bicycle shed by die washing room. It’s a great idea to have a small plastic basket with all you shower items, so that you do not forget something in the bathroom. Never leave small change, something looking like a laptop bag or anything of value in an unoccupied car.

"PINK TAX" WHAT IT IS AND WHY YOU SHOULD CARE

"DO YOU MAYBE HAVE A TAMPON?" Many of us ladies have probably asked a fellow womxn this question at one point in our lives, in fact if you haven’t, you are seriously prepared for whatever life may throw at you. Aunt Flo, Satan’s Waterfall, the Curse of Dracula – menstruation has its many names and it can be a real pain in the butt when it’s ‘that time of the month”. With having a period comes the added ‘bonus’ of having to buy sanitary products, and in quite a few countries tampons, pads and other sanitary products are taxed as “Luxury Items” and not seen as a necessity for those who experience periods. Kenya, became one of the very first countries to scrap ‘Tampon Tax’ or ‘Pink Tax’, as its affectionately known. The USA, as of June 2017 only has 9 states that have officially exempted sanitary products from taxation. And South Africa? Well, we’re still paying, in fact we’re paying the full 15% VAT.

PINK TAX

Why is this an issue? Well, firstly sanitary products are a need for all womxn, it’s not like one can just decide not to menstruate for a month. Secondly, the tax on sanitary products makes them more expensive than they should be, this means that a lot of womxn that don’t have the means to buy sanitary products often go without them.

What is being done about this? From Stellenbosch University’s very own Law Clinic, Monja Posthumus-Meyjes, an attorney, two candidate attorneys, Danielle Louw and Erika Wright, and two SU law faculty academics, Dr Lize Mills and Silke de Lange, have conducted research on VAT charged on feminine hygiene products and the impact high prices have on womxn who can’t afford it. Posthumus-Meyjes said: “The fact that many girls and womxn cannot afford proper sanitary hygiene products has serious consequences in other aspects of their lives. About 30% of female learners in South African schools do not attend school when they menstruate because they cannot afford sanitary hygiene products. This means that a girl could effectively lose about 90 days of schooling a year as a direct result of issues relating to menstruation. This places her at a huge disadvantage because she’s effectively losing out on 30% of her education, every year.”The researchers believe it’s a constitutional issue because human rights to education, freedom, security and human dignity are being infringed upon. They have also recently put forth that sanitary products be a part of the submissions to the National Treasury on which products that should be VAT free.

What can you do? Sign a petition! It will literally take you 2 minutes and it’s for a really good cause that will probably help every womxn in South Africa and move this country forward in terms of equality! https://www.change.org /p/tampontaxmustfalljoin-cosmopolitan-southafrica-s-petition

" For being a Matie, is just not enough" PALLAS comes from the Greek word meaning “maiden”. In Greek mythology this was the name of a friend of the goddess Athena. Athena accidentally killed her and subsequently took the name Pallas in honour of her friend.
