PALLAS ATHENA EDITION 3 | 2019

GOODBYE FROM THE

EDITOR

As Minerva's front lawn starts looking less like a sandpit and more like a beautiful green garden and the seasons change from Spring to Summer and from Silly to Study, the year slowly draws to a close.

ELOUISE VAN WYK

What lies ahead is a whirlwind of studying, maybe holiday planning, day dreaming or deciding which of this year's long forgotten new years resolutions you will finally get to... next year. But the end of the year also means it's time for the very last Pallas of 2019

I'm not going to put any emotional quotes here, as this edition is filled with enough motivation and inspirational messages. Being the editor of this publication has been both super fun, challenging and often time-consuming, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've had so much fun doing the layout and editing, so thank you Minerva for providing me and the team with the stories, memories and photos used to fill these pages term after term. I'm so excited to hand it over to the next editor and to see them make the publication even better in the year to come. I wish you all the best of luck with the exam season that lies ahead and hope you make the best of every moment that is left in 2019. Thank you for reading this edition of the Pallas. The editorial team and I have compiled a fun selection of articles on everything from news, eco and games to fashion - sure to cure any case of boredom. I hope you enjoy reading the Pallas as much as the editorial team and I enjoyed compiling it.

DRINKING: HOW TO PARTY SAFELY ON CAMPUS BY: TARA GROBBELAAR Going out with friends on Klein Saterdag or attending one of Minerva’s many events is fun…very fun. However, it is important to remember to stay safe especially when drinking and partying.Safety is something we often take for granted and don’t think twice about.

IThere have been problems regarding safety on campus especially while we are out having a good time. Thus, it is important to remember to make your safety and the safety of those around you your first priority. There is also something to be said about the drinking culture in Stellenbosch. There is a lot of pressure to party and drink. It is important to remember not to let anyone pressure you into doing something that you don’t want to. Surround yourself with trustworthy, loyal friends who have your best interests at heart and who won’t take offence if you say no to a drink.

With all that being said, here are a few tips on how to stay safe, specifically when drinking: 1. Go out with friends you trust and make sure that you have all of their numbers. 2. Don’t walk around alone after a night out, always stick in groups. 3. Make sure you eat before drinking to slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream. 4. Drink water and lots of it! Alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. 5. Know your tolerance levels and stick to it. 6. Don’t accept drinks from people you don’t know. When ordering your own drink, be sure to keep your eyes on it and don’t leave it unattended anywhere. 7. Help your friends if you can see that they are in need of it. If they are unconscious, always turn them on their side and stack pillows or some other form of support behind their back.

If you are ever in need of help on campus, contact campus security (082 808 2333), the police (10111) or medical services. Your safety is of cardinal importance and you should never hesitate to put it first!

COMM-itment issues BY: AURELIA MOUTON Minerva is a pretty big residence. It’s very easy to feel lost or unseen. The size of Minerva can be overwhelming, but don’t despair! There is good news: Minerva is made up of little units of efficiency, creativity and friendship… COMMITTEES! For those of you who don’t know, a committee, in the context of our residence, is a group of people who sign up to volunteer to make everything from Vensters to safety to House Dance to fines (the list truly does go on) run smoothly. If you are snoring at this point… THERE IS A GEES COMMITTEE! If you really take a look you’ll find that there is a space for anyone and everyone to become a part of what makes our residence home. You might at this point ask yourself “Sounds like work! What do I get out of committees?” Valid question. Well, one of the most significant things you can get out of a committee is friendship. SO cheesy, but true. There’s something about being in a pickle looking for cups and storeroom keys with other people that really just makes you bond. If that experience doesn’t help you gain some friends, I promise you, cleaning the Thom Hall floor at 23:00 will! On a serious note, you learn how to work with people and deadlines, you gain organizational skills and if all else fails… room points (but that really isn’t what serving the house is about!). The skills you learn from committees are skills that help build and shape you as a person and can be carried into the next phase of your life, whatever that looks like. No one has ever been worse off after learning how to think on their feet, budget and come up with ideas.

MINERVA COMMITTEES INCLUDE: Events, Leadership and Development, Campus Engagement, Pride, Social Impact, Gees, Merchandise, Spirituality and Diversity, Womxn Empowerment, Safety, Pallas, IT and Sound, Senior’s Comm, Sustainability, Fines, Garden and all the dance committees.

ANTI-GBV MOVEMENT BY: GRACE MNGADI

Anti-Gender-based Violence (Anti-GBV) Movements across the country are rising up. The brutal death Uyinene Mrwetyana shook the nation, and an outcry for justice, safety and dignity resonated everywhere. Because Uyinene was unfortunately not the only womxn who has been a victim of GBV. The statistics in South Africa are nauseatingly high. And they seem to be climbing up every year. Right now, most of us in the movement are no longer just hurt. We are angry. We are angry that it has had to come to a point where thousands of people had to miss work and academics to ask the government to fulfil their mandate of giving us our basic human rights, by marching to parliament in Cape Town on 5 September 2019.

#ANTIGBVMOVEMENT

There have been hundreds of other marches in the name of Anti-GBV in South Africa, across the world. At Stellenbosch University, a movement of students have banned together to combat Anti-GBV on campus. Memorandums have been given out to management structures to hold them accountable for their failure to fully protect womxn, members of the queer community, and disabled individuals. Men’s residences and PSOs have been called out for the toxic masculinity culture that has manifested into complacency towards GBV.

THE ROAD TO

BECOMING A MINERVIANER BY: SHANE' SWART On the 23rd of January a new beginning and Journey started for the newcomers. Scared, anxious and shy they started the journey of becoming a Matie and a Minervianer. FYS (First Year Syndrome) is hectic! As first years you come in and experience a variety of cultures, lifestyles and people and of course, University life. This is probably one of the most terrifying but amazing experience and period of growth one can experience. The first few weeks were filled with socials, meeting people and unforeseen challenges one has to face. From waking up every morning to Fergilicious and dropping everything when you here Simply the Best was where the journey started. Like any other journey, this one had its challenges too and the first years went through a period of learning and growth. Some of the newcomers were asked to reflect upon their journey thus far and asked to tell us about what they had learned and experienced. Here are a few of their reflections:

ZANELLE VOSTER “This journey helped me to grow emotionally and as a person. This journey has taught me that time management and planning is super important as I initially expected that balancing my studying with my social and relaxation time was not going to be that difficult. I quickly experienced that it was difficult to have a balance as I find myself studying most of the time because I still wanted a social life spending time with my significant others and still living healthily and being able to rest in between. This was a difficult time for me but I soon realized that we are so much more capable than we think.

DEBORAH PASCOE What this journey has taught me was have an open mind and go into things with an open mind and not being so fixed on my opinions but also allowing others to have an input and say and allowing them to have an impact in my life.”

SISANDA ZONDI "This journey was a rich experience for me as I got to learn all about the different cultures and the diverse communities on campus and at res and the fact that I got to meet so much new and different people. This journey taught me growth and to be open minded as it is sometimes so easy to assume something about someone, but once you approach that person and start talking to them and learning about them, you start to learn what makes them so special and who they really are.”

KARA VAN ZYL “This journey has taught me a lot about personal growth, being independent and gaining life experience. My time at Minerva has been so amazing and I quickly fell in love with Minerva and the things I learned here. One thing I expected was that my dishes were going to be up to date and always clean when I wanted to use it….. uhm … that certainly did not happen! You also quickly learn to live without essentials since student budget is no joke!”

HOUSE COMMITTEE 2018/19

THEIR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE BY: JEANNE' RABIE

This is a tribute to the 2018/2019 House Committee! They have led and inspired us for the past year and now we want to know what the future holds for them next year and the years to come. Each of the members received the following questions: 1. Are you staying in Minerva next year, if not- where? 2. What are your plans for 2020? (Will you continue studying in Stellenbosch, will you be working, doing articles etc.) 3. Where will we be able to see you in 5 years’time? 4. Name your fondest memory of Minerva 5. Please mention any “last words”/quote you would want to leave the house with.

JANA

1. I’m moving out of Minerva. I’m planning on moving into a flat, the struggle of finding a place is real. But will be sharing a flat with Lydia’s outgoing Prim- Dannielle. We met during our term as Prims and been inseparable ever since! 2. Plans for 2020 is to do my BAcc Honours at Stellenbosch and PASS

3. As a qualified CA(SA), somewhere on a Greek Island with a Greek god #Minerva 4. Sitting at lunch tables hearing all the gossip, banter, laughter, listening how people try and figure out what is today’s pudding and knowing that we can all come to a consensus that fish bake is the worst. Most of all seeing the strong friendships formed with strangers who become family! 5. Ships don’t sink because of the water around them. Ships sink because of the water that gets in them. Don’t let what is happening around you get inside you and weigh you down.

MICHELLE: 1. No, I won't be staying in Minerva next year. I am not sure where I will be staying though, I am still busy flat hunting. 2.  I will (hopefully) be doing my BAcc Honours next year. 3. This is pretty much dependent on whether or not I do my Honours next year... only time will tell. 4. Vensters 2017... it was a night I will never forget! 5. Self-care is not being selfish.

NATASHA: 1.I will unfortunately not be staying in Minerva next year. I am moving into a house across from the Engineering Building, so in other words, close enough to pop into Minerva every now and then! 2.I have a 4 year degree, so I will be in my final year in 2020. 3.In 5 years' time, I will hopefully be traveling between countries for work, living my best life & earning enough money to help fund renovations for Minerva đ&#x;˜‰ #alumni

4.EVERY SINGLE "SIMPLY THE BEST" & of course Welcoming 2019. "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change, NEVER stop learning, NEVER stop growing & just go for it, no matter how it ends, it was an experience." Thank you Minerva, for giving me the space to change, to learn and to grow into the woman that I am today, I will forever be grateful.

MEGAN: 1.   I will not be staying in Minerva next year. I'll be moving back home, but still trying to twist my parents arm for a flat! 2.   I will be working next year, what exactly and where I'm not sure yet. 3.   You will definitely see me in the corporate world trying to make a difference there in firms and making sure everyone has a smile on their face at work. #industrialpshycologist

4. My favourite memory of Minerva is in the beginning of this year seeing the first years on stage doing Vensters regardless of everything else falling apart. 5. Be seed-minded, not need minded.Â

NICOLA: 1.I will be residing one more year in Minerva for my final year of studies. That means I will be joining the 'old tannies" club đ&#x;˜‰. I am grateful that I can be here for one more year! 2. I will be finishing my BEd degree while taking Psychology as an extra subject at Unisa. Furthermore I will just be doing whatever this new season has in store for me. 3.I hope to be a registered Educational Psychologist in 5 years time hopefully settled with a family. I would also love to maybe travel or do my honours overseas. 4.To me it isn't really about the memories that I have made, but rather the feelings I have experienced and the friends I have met. I have truly met those "bridesmaid" type of friends they always tell you about. And this is probably the most special memory I have, together with all the cherished times we have spent in and outside Minerva together. 5."in a world you can be anything, be kind".

ANE: 1.   No, I believe there is a time and place for everything. Minerva has been so good to me but after 3 years I feel that it’s my time to say goodbye. I will be moving into a flat with two of my fellow Minervianers, Micke Oosthuizen and Jana van Rooyen. 2.   I hope to do my honours in BCom Management Accounting. 3.   Sjoe. A lot can happen in 5 years. I am a very impulsive person and don’t always plan so far ahead. For now I hope to see myself with a BCom ManAcc degree, Honours and hopefully a CIMA qualification.   I am a Christian and live by the verse Psalm 143:10 “ Teach me to do Your will for you are my God, may your good Spirit lead me on level groundâ€?

4.   I think by now everyone knows it was Housewarming (haha) 5.   I would like to leave Minerva with something I have learned the past 3 years, ( which is now my motto in life) "There is no growth in your comfort zone and no comfort in your growth zone. Never stop challenging yourself. Carpe Diem. Seize the day.â€?

COMINE:

1. I wish i had an answer to this question, but unfortunately I am not sure yet. One thing I am sure about is that I am going to miss all my friends leaving Minervs a hectic lot though. 2. My degree is a four year course so next year I am definitely still going to be running around campus in between classes. 3. In 5 years I am going to be 26 travelling on the sea with a boat that

Vlam build, with mad fishing and diving skills and looking for new adventures and opportunities on the coast of South America haha. Can’t wait!. 4. Every lunch and dinner time since first years has been a good memory. Jinne, it brings you close to people that lives on the other side of res and you hear stories and have conversations about things you never knew could even be a topic to have conversations about. 5. "Don't ask the world what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive, cause what this world needs most is people that come alive" - wild at heart. Stay curious and positive and always thankful, especially for being a Minervianer

THANDEKA:

1. Sadly, my time in Minerva is up, so next year I will not be living in Minerva. Where exactly, isn’t finalized yet. But I will be in Stellenbosch. 2. In 2020 I will still be studying here, postgraduate studies. So, I am still going to be seen on campus. 3. You will see me on social media firstly because I have a presence there now that I aim to maintain. So, you will easily find me there @missfeisty. And what I will be doing? A number of things. But I am studying entrepreneurship and innovation management, so you will more than likely find me dabbling in entrepreneurship..

4. The various events that I attended over the period of time I have lived here, I learnt so much and even unlearned other things too, and I also had so much fun! 5. I live by this: If I through my actions inspire others to do more, become more, dream more, learn more, then, not only have I led, but I’ve lived. Thank you Minerva, for being my home.

NEECKE: 1. I’m not staying in Minerva next year! I am planning on going into a flat with a few friends but not sure where yet! 2. I changed my course in the beginning of second year so I still have one year left before I get my degree (hopefully)! 3. In 5 years I hope to be working in the field of HR! I see myself taking on new and exciting challenges in an enjoyable environment! I also hope to have a side job of doing what I also love and that’s hair and makeup! By that time I will hopefully have a man in my life and I wouldn’t mind to be settled down! 4. There’s a lot of memories I will remember for ever! Things like borrowing milk from someone, every dance and prep for dances when everyone ran to each other’s rooms for dresses and hairspray!

5. Your mind is a powerful thing. When you fill it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change. Minerva will always be my home away from home and I will forever be thankful for everything I learned the past 3 years!

KELSEA: 1.No. I will be staying in Stellenbosch still but I’m not sure where yet! (professional last minute planner) 2.As much as I would loooove to go and live in the jungle - I am hoping to do my BAcc honours at Stellenbosch. 3.Hopefully I will be a qualified CA(SA) working in funding conservation projects or sustainability reporting. If I could choose one place in the world to live it would be South America, somewhere around Bolivia or Peru. 4. That’s so tough to answer because I’ve spent the last 3 years saying yes to every possible experience I could. 2019 welcoming is definitely a top memory and I wish I could do it all over again next year, as well as all the spontaneous missions, seeing the Pride flag go up this year and doing laundry. 5. If you walk through the Thom hall and the lights are on in broad daylight, please switch them off ❤ also you can retake a class, but you can’t relive an adventure!

KARA: 1. Sadly, I’m moving out of Minerva next year. However, I’m still going to be in the Stellenbosch area. I’m thinking of moving into a students’ house with close friends. 2. I’m planning on doing my Masters in Industrial Psychology. 3. Within the next five years I want to have learned and grown within my work, to have increased my responsibilities and skills. I went to school in London for a year when I was younger and since then I always had this dream of moving back there. I hope this childhood dream becomes a reality!..

4."Stoep koffies" 5. “You never know when an opportunity is gonna come knocking but it’s important to be prepared for when it does.” - J.Venter.

STEPH: 1. I’m so excited that I will be staying in Minerva again. 2. I will still be in Stellenbosch, doing my third year of my degree. 3. Hopefully working somewhere in Europe, probably Switzerland or Ge rmany. 4. Singing ‘Simply The Best’ and Minerva’s house song. 5. “She does not know what the future holds, but she is grateful for slow and steady growth” – Morgan Harper Nichols

LESLEY:

1. I am of course staying in Minerva next year and I am unbelievably lucky enough to say that I will also be on the new HK for 2020 so Minerva isn't getting rid of me that easily! 2. I will be completing my third year of my BEd Foundation Phase Teaching degree at Stellenbosch 3. My goal would be to have finished my degree in the next 2 years, teach in South African schools for 2 years and finally in my 5th year from now, I would love to teach in Dubai or Canada.

1. It's so hard to pick just 1, but probably my first time in the HK circle singing Simply The Best, shouting so much until I couldn't breathe and just seeing all of Minerva supporting me and knowing they chose me to serve them. 2. Be passionate, be genuine and dare to try no matter how scared

ELOUISE: 1. I’m so happy to be staying in Minerva and I’m so excited for the year to come! 2. My BA (law) degree is a three year course, so I hope to finish it so that I can do my post graduate LLB or a honours degree in one of my BA courses in 2021. 1. I know I want to go travel the world, especially Asia and Africa, do photography for Nat Geo, get involved with a non-profit organization or just do something creative for a year or two after I finish my studies. But if I decide to be very career focused, hopefully on my way to becoming either a state prosecutor or a politician.

4. My favourite memories from this year was freaking out with the sêr and the moment we stepped off the stage because – we did THAT and felt proud regardless of the results. Every time we sing simply the best and the house song – the unity and pride for Minerva I feel in that moment is unreal. 5. “Seek Discomfort” - it’s a reminder to consistently challenge yourself, to step out of your comfort zone, say yes to more things and to use every opportunity given to you to grow and learn.

STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU STAND ON BY: CASSANDRA VELLEMA

Single-use plastics are one of the most, if not the most, offending causes of our global pollution problem that we are faced with every day. As university students, we see these plastics come into use nearly every day – whether it be the plastic coffee cup lid on your MyBrew chai latte, the plastic bag holding purchased textbooks or groceries, or the plastic bottle containing the water you just bought. The threat of single-use plastics on our environment is ever present, especially in our modern society. Despite the recent increase in recycling awareness, single-use plastics frequently do not make it to a landfill or are recycled. A full 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced annually is left to flow into our oceans; the equivalent of pouring one garbage truck of plastic into the ocean every minute. However, us students can each incorporate new habits into our daily lives, habits that can collectively, as a campus, reduce the growing threat of pollution on our environment. Plastic bags are a major danger as a pollutant, often ending up in natural habitats and harming animal life. Investigate buying a reusable cloth shopping bag that you can take with you when shopping, instead of taking a plastic one at the cashier. Alternatively, Minerva students can use one of the boomerang bags available at the foyer, returning it when you come back to res. Humans buy about 1,000,000 plastic bottles per minute in total. With the effort of recycling, plastic bottles can become reused, but this counts on ensuring that these bottles reach recycling plants. Ensure to place any recyclable items you have in the correct bins marked “Recyclable” on campus. Coffee lids and cups also play a part in the increasing danger of pollution and harm to the environment. With 500 billion disposable cups being consumed every year, finding ways to reduce the use of them can really make a difference. Invest in purchasing a reusable mug or tumbler, which can be given to a barista at coffee shops for them to use as your drink holder, instead of the standard plastic coffee cup. DCM sells reusable mugs for R40. Plastic straws are one of the primary plastic pollutants found in oceans, landfills, and ecosystems. They are difficult to recycle, as straws are most commonly made from type 5 plastic, or polypropylene, not accepted by many recycling plants. Due to the narrow width of the straw, it can also easily be ingested by animals or lodge themselves into the animals body on accident. With America alone using 390 million plastic straws each day, this danger to our ecosystem is one we cannot ignore. Students can investigate purchasing metal straws, which are reusable and washable, to use in place of plastic straws. Find out which restaurants and cafes hand out paper straws instead of plastic, and those who serve the latter, try to request no straw with your meal, or to receive a spoon, or a paper straw instead. These tips may seem like insignificant acts, but with collective incorporation of these habits, and adapting a more eco-conscious frame of mind, students can make a significant impact on the environment, for the better.
