About the project The planned partnership has looked at how schools can increase sustainability in their schools and communities, and how energy costs could be reduced. Our final website includes helpful teaching resources to work sustainability through a cross-curricular approach by different subject teachers. Thus, each school analysed their curriculum to work out resources taking into account the diversity and different abilities among the students to fit the project interdisciplinary and sustainably. This included environmental, economic, social and cultural dimensions of sustainability. Themes like Natural Disasters, Ecological Footprints, Green Buildings, Renewable Energy, Waste & Recycling, Healthy Eating and growing, Environmental Problems and Loss of Biodiversity, and Consumerism and Lifestyles (Fair Trade, Organic, Free Range, Made Locally, Bio, Food Miles) were included to create and share WebQuests, quizzes, surveys, digital presentations, essays, and an environmental calendar which includes pictures selected after research, sharing and discussing finds, a logo (chosen by a competition), and photos of local environmental problems. European seeds were planted at school allotments to work on food miles and being organic leading to recipes. A weather station was used in each school to share data. Students exchanged opinions through e-mails, essays, blogs and projects set on e-twinning and digital platforms. World Cafes evaluated the process in the mobilities. During the second year students designed sustainable brochures, videos with tips to save costs at school, home and the wider community. Their future commitments were recorded in videos and joint in a presentation. Students designed a dress, a table and a chair with recycling products. The final products include a web page and an e-magazine. This is the second part: Year 2.

GOOD NEWS!! WINNERS OF THE FIRST CONSUMER CLASSROOM COMPETITION

September 2013

Coming back to schoosl in with such good new September September was going to be a very hard month. We had to get ready to host more than 40 partners in the Basque Country. We had to check that all the visits we had chosen were fully planned and that all members were ready to go on working. However, the beginning of the school year was different. When teachers told their students that we would go to Brussels, they couldn’t believe it. Those who had read it on Twitter or Facebook kept the secret and it was a real surprise for the oldest students in Agurain. The products they had produced for the Comenius project had won the Fist Consumer Classroom Competition

Interactive poster including opinion essays and videos

We won a trip to brussels Students from Aniturri BHI School (Agurain, The Basque Country) won the first edition of the Inter-School Competition on Consumer Classroom, an interactive website with useful materials on consumer topics, launched by the EU in March 2013. The winning team designed the project “Environmental problems the Earth is facing, a digital poster focused on sustainable consumption. The prize included a trip to Brussels!!!

Aniturri used the products designed for the Comenius project and spread the work of their partnership at the European Commission.

During the visit to the European Commission on 25th November, students had the chance to ask the European Commissioner some questions. This is Neven Mimica, Member of the EC in charge of Consumer Policy.

More s n questio d an s answer e r he

The first question we posed was related to our Comenius project: 1. We are working on a Comenius project and researching about reducing energy costs at school and at home. We have held a meeting with our partners from France, N. Ireland, UK and Germany, and we have seen that there are differences among us when we talk about implementing Directive 2009/72/EC. There is a big concerned in our country due to the high cost of electricity. The consumers in the Spanish State pay the most expensive energy in Europe. We have undergone several reforms, but it seems competitiveness never arrives. Is there a way not to dismantle the renewable energy sector? We learn at school that renewable energy should be promoted and used, but then, the sector is at risk. How can we understand this? How are we going to meet the target 20-20-20 if renewables cannot be implemented in our country because of the reforms in the sector?

About the video Students speak about sustainable consumption and the prize they won. It was explained that the poster had been designed as a result of our work for Comenius project. It is a pity the video doesn’t include all the clips the ‘paparazzis’ recorded for three days non-stop. Still, we got to highlight how to important it is to work connecting subjects and cross curricularly. This is the results of two subjects working together: MGZ (Science in Society) and English and two school years: 1 Batx and Year 4

New warriors meetings. Getting to know each other. Exchanging personal information before the mobility to the Basque Country Students got to know each other exchanging emails and on social networks before the mobility. They sent their profiles with a letter to match each other, and then they exchanged their accounts. The communication was very fluent before coming to the Basque Country. Several meetings including parents and students were held to plan the week for our partners. The youngest students set the boards for the displays we had organized and decorated the school to welcome our hosts. The press was called and a description of our Comenius partnership was published on our school blog to explained them what we were doing.

At the same time, we also desseminated our work and informed the institutions we were going to visit about the partnership

Pasaia: at the heart of the bay We thought that a video would help our partners understand the complex arrangement of a town around a port. As most of our partners live inland, the fresh air of the bay and the richness of this natural location would be interesting for the project. Researching on a degraded area and urban economic development inspire us for the new Erasmus+ project.

Azti-Tecnalia

Pasaia is the second most important harbour in the Basque Country and one of the most important ones in Spain. It is located in the Oiartzun estuary (SouthEastern Bay of Biscay). The recovery of the water quality has been a strong aim. That’s why we contacted Azti-Tecnalia and arranged a visit. Azti-Tecnalia works on stopping the negative impacts of future changes along the coast and in the marine environment. They contribute to the development of the economic and social environment using and promoting Technological Innovation. Azti-Tecnalia transforms science into business, and finds solutions for institutional managers and agents, the fishery sector, sea users, food sector and consumers, and the scientific community. Although technicians were really busy and they couldn’t afford opening the centre to every body every day, they were very kind with us. They found the Comenius project very interesting and we were welcome to do some measuring with two of the technicians. We even saw a yellow submarine!!!

ad e e R or m web on

Last year, just a month previous to our visit, AZTITecnalia explored for the first time the inside of ocean eddies located off the Basque-Cantabrian coast. READ MORE on their web page. The data gathered will provide more knowledge about this type of oceanic structures and the effect on the marine ecosystem, including larvae of the species in the area. The big group split into two to go on a trip boat and attend the civic reception. The press covered the event and the article was published in the main newpaper of the territory of Gipuzkoa. The previous day we had covered how green energy is produced. Now we were going to see how it could be supplied in a cooperative way. We were going to meet Goiener and exchange our European views on the topic.

FROM ANITURRI TO PASAIA. A port of call!

The major greeted us before the visit.

The members of the council welcomed us and we projected the video we had created about their town. Afterwads, Goiener (non profit energy supplier cooperative) explained us their project and we had a very interesting discussion about renewable energy generation and purchase. Although their is a European law about renewables, it is not applied the same way

in

each coutry.

It is more difficult to buy green energy and to start up projects which generate renewable energy in the Basque Country and Spain than in the countries within our partnership because of the oligopoly companies and the tariff deficit it is said Spain owes. More information about Goiener in English. Their web page.. We told them that we would ask the European Commissioner in charge of Consumer Policy about the tariff deficit on our visit to the European Commission, and so we did: QUESTION 2: On the other hand, when we check our bills, we see that we are paying for a tariff deficit which seems to have no end. We are told that we owe 28.000 million euros to five energy suppliers. However, these energy companies seemed to have earned 40.000 million euros in the last 10 years. Is there a way to audit these 5 big energy firms? An audit would let us see if we are really paying such big amounts of money because of

The press These three articles were published on the main regional newspapers. Although our school is located in the territory of Araba, on of the articles about the Comenius partnership was published on one of the papers with largest readerships in Gipuzkoa historical territory. The article published in Basque language could be read in the only Basque language circulating paper edited in the Basque region. The third article was published in the territory of Araba, on the newspaper with large readerships.

Online editions As the articles had their digital edition, they were also published on the school blog and linked on Twitter, as well as on the project web site. After the visits, we sent the link to the institutions which helped us with the visits, and they linked the articles on their web pages, too. Students shared the articles via Twitter and Facebook, but the social network they used most was Whatsapp.

The pdf documents can be downloaded from the project website and online editions can be read clicking on the pictures above.

About Elos

Download Elos flier for schools and students

Elos seeks to promote the European and International dimension in education. The Elos concept defines the learning outcomes for students, describing the various dimensions for students participating in a European and international context. These outcomes are stated in the Common Framework for Europe Competence (CFEC). The CFEC offers a comprehensive and unique set of developmental competences that students gain by studying at an Elos school and which prepares them to study, work, live and thrive in an international environment. The Elos school standard describes the requirements for a school to call itself an ‘Elos school’.

Twenty two teachers from Elos schools in ten different countries attended the training course at the Global Language Immersion Centre in Gloucester. It was a very productive week developing understanding of the Elos concept and resources, strengthening the Elos network of schools across Europe and making lasting friendships. Elos Newletter Aniturri has been part of the Elos project for seven years and we have fully contributed to the net. This is the article we wrote for the Elos 10 years anniversary and that will be published in a booklet.

We set new eew21 teams at schools and although some of them got to know each other during the visit to the Basque Country, we recycled our English lessons (foreign language) assignments and shared them with our partners. What’s more, we used Edomodo platform to disseminate the project and used the letters back again to meet new friends, many of them from the United States.

Schools organized regular meetings with warriors and work was done transversally. Subjects involved: Citizenship, Civic Education, Technology, Science and English (and foreign languages). This work involved interdepartamental meetings and assessment.

We had to exchange profiles to start planning the mobility to Germany. A lot of students used social networks for communication, kept in contact and exchanged project work. Everybody was willing to

Parents meeting were held regularly too. Each school had acquired a regular system to inform parents about the project. Open Days, Parents’ Day, School Council and School Boards, depending on the schools, as well as written communications and face-to-face meetings before and after mobilities.

At the same time, Aniturri had organized a visit to KontsumoBIDE with Year 3 to work on Fair Trade, consumerism and lifestyles. What is a balanced diet? What do you do you to reduce waste? How do we manage waste? What can we compost? How can we reuse everyday items? But first, we shared the recipe of a paella, which was professionally cooked by our partners.

Online shopping Collaborative project ion icat s l b Pu ssay e i t al Dig inion Op AS ANV ject C INE pro ONL itted m Sub

What do you think about online shopping? First we shared the collection of opinion essays with our partners. Students found out what changes the EU was going to pass at the beginning of the summer concerning online shopping and recorded some videos with some questions that were answers with more videos. Read more on Aniturri’s blog. The writings were added onto the canvas where we published the videos about online shopping.

We used the products we created for the Comenius project to meet other students in Europe. We shared the work with another school in Germany and we made up new friends with another Elos school. Therefore, we disseminated the work the partnershop was doing another school and worked together for the Consumer Classroom Competition from February to April. We got to be finalist, but the voting system didn’t help us. We cannot use facebook at school and that was how it had to be voted. ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTS DO YOU KNOW YOUR ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT?

What is a Carbon Footprint? This is how students from Kingfisher explained us what Carbon Footprints are. Read their essay. Students in the partnership decided that the best way to measure the average of planets that our schools need to support their lifestyle would be this resource: a footprint calculator. At Aniturri they also used other games and resources. Read on blog.

ABOUT ÖHRINGEN Recylcing an article to rewrite the information we had about Öhringen. We also used previous presentations we had created a year before to tell the parents and school mates where we were going and what we were going to do. Students researched on the German Educational System to find differences and find out what they would like to bring back to their schools form that system. During the mobility students had to write a diary and at the end of the experience they had to create a collaborative picture canvas to share their memories.

Oehringen is the biggest city in the Hohenlohekreis district, in the north eastern part of Baden-Württemberg. The city’s history goes back to the Roman times and the settlement of “Vicus Aurelianus. Located in the land of Hohenlohe, the valleys are sur-

First hours...

WE ARRIVE IN ÖHRINGEN The first hours were appealling. Interest, curiosity and desire evoked early in the morning when we woke up at three in the morning. During the trip, we had time to review the presentations and tasks each one was committed to fulfill. We met some of our hosting partners in October, but we were going to meet all those partners with whom we had exchanged emails, pictures and shared work, as well as Skype meetings. Snack, lunch and brunch are not the same in our country because our timetable is different. Questions in the morning: ‘What time did you get up?’ Was it 5:45, 6:00, 6:30 or 6:45? ‘How long did it take you to get to school?’ The Principal and the school engineer were ready to meet us to tour around the school.

DAY 4 VISITING A ‘BIOENERGY VILLAGE During the mobility to the Basque Country, we saw how an energy cooperative can supply energy to a community. We also that Asparrena, one of our local towns, has planned to be energetically self-sufficient. After these two steps, we visited a village very close to Öhringen, which is energetically autonomous. The village has a community biogas plant that heats the houses there. In case the plant cannot supply energy for any reasons, they have plan B, which is a pallets community heating. Last year, they didn’t use it at all. The energy the biogas plant produced was enough to heat Untermassholderbasch. There is a big concerned in the region, so the Hohenlohe-Odenwald-Tauber works hard to achieve renewable energy and to fight climate change as well as to reduce costs.
