POCKET PARK DESIGN

LOCATION: Kumaripati, Kathmandu AREA: 187.628 sq.m.

This is the ongoing project done by Vriksha Foundation under Lalitpur municipality with me being in the design team. Vriksha foundation is a non-profit organization which has been doing works such as pocket park design on the spaces which are neglected for long time with the major goal of uplifting community by providing green communal spaces. The works are carried by various architects, environmentalist and professionals on the voluntarily basis.

CONCEPT : PHYSICAL REALM TO DIVINITY The concept was solely developed through site. The historical background of the site gave various stories related to it. One of the story is about “7 STEPS” which carries significant cultural value. 7 steps is one of the ritual carried in a ceremony called bratabandha which is done by brahmin, chettris and newar community of nepal. In this particular site, Rajopadhyaya Group ( Desantar) belonging to newar community are still practicing 7 steps ritual. Through the detail study of this rituals, the conceptual conclusion was to symbolize seven steps to seven chakras of our body which help connects human to the divine realm. Another main conceptual guide was the existing ekta book store near the site which has been there for more than 25 years. This particular book store gave the axis of positive energy (knowledge and wisdom) to the site as a design guideline.

CONCEPT : BREAKING THE PATTERN

This is the ongoing project which was designed under Arniko Designers and planners pvt. Ltd. The brief was to develop a commercial cum residence with the full usage of spaces. As the land is situated in the major city area, the site has high commercial value. All the existing row buildings besides the sites are commercial buildings which are designed as a simple straight rectangular boxes. Having the tight space for exterior façade design, I have tried a simple but effective way to break that rectangular pattern by running inclined lines in building facades and use of different materials. This building is designed as a modern commercial building with the use of aluminium, steels, glass and reinforced concrete as a main building materials.

RESIDENCE DESIGN

This is the ongoing project of a residence for a family of 7 members. The brief was to create a modern 3d design with the most effective planning for smooth functioning of that families daily lives. The building consists of 6 bedrooms, 2 master bedrooms with attached bathroom, 3 children's bedrooms, 1 guest bedroom, Living room, family room. Kitchen room, dining room, stores, puja room and toilet/bathroom in each floor. The 3d is designed as a modern house with the balanced play of lines, planes and volumes with modern lights and soothing colors of same palettes.

MEMORIAL PARK: THE MEMORY OF 2015

On 25th April 2015, 7.6 magnitude EQ hits barpak, On 12th May, 6.8 magnitude EQ hits dolakha. According to seismological Nepal, there were 8,790 casualties and 22,300 injuries. Also, 8 million people and 600,000 houses were affected. This prime disastrous event led me to pursue my thesis research on earthquake memorials and various types and typologies of a memorial and finally design a memorial park to incorporate history, events, experience and memories of earthquake 2015.

HARIHARPUR FORT CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT The project on Hariharpur Fort was an extensive design studio project where research on various Conservation methods, International Charters, UNESCO guidelines, National Bye-laws and Ancient Monument Act etc. was carried out in group. The field work started with documentation of Fort structure, residences, community buildings etc. and Public interaction which gave an insight to the requirement in general and thus conservation and development proposal was presented.

The planning was proposed in phases with infrastructure development, conservation and development of Fort area, Community buildings, School, Hotels, Information center, Museum etc. with an intension to attract tourists, Preserve the history of war, authenticity, culture and tradition of that place.

The concept for the planning was to maintain the architectural essence of that place. Hence, the prevailing style and material was used in the construction and the community spaces were planned centrally for easy access. With the concept of Space for all Chautara spaces for elderly people, working areas, market , training center for youth and play area, recreational spaces for children were established.

View tower and hariharpur gate was designed through inspiration of star-shaped hariharpur fort. Community centre was designed taking inspiration from existing green hills. School, hotels and other construction was designed as per existing architectural styles and materials.

Gumba designed as as significant unique structure to represent Buddhist culture of majority Tamang community.

After the study of settlement area, through careful analysis of each house various functions were introduced to some of the suitable houses in developing the area into tourism attraction place. Also, Four 2storied prototypes were developed according to the existing architectural style of ekra construction i.e. stone in ground floor and wood in upper floor in upper home-stay and lower-homestay.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN

The brief was to rethink the landscape design of architecture department of pulchowk campus. The assignment was provided as a group project with the challenge to tackle existing built structure and negligence of the space with a positive output.

SIGNAGE

Various elements of landscape was studied followed by case studies. The first approach was to understand the existing problems and find solutions to them without hampering historical buildings in the area. Thus, came the concept of creating a loop and to create a stress-free environment for architecture students.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT : REDEFINING HOUSING CULTURE The brief was to develop a housing project within kirtipur from site selection to final housing design. The site was selected at charghare panga through land-use suitability analysis. Housing Development at Kirtipur was an Urban Renewal Project designed in group. It was designed with the concept to maintain the essence of the surrounding core area through traditional architecture features (Courtyards, Chowks, Temples, Verandah etc.) yet redefining through no fence concept, introduction of green and communal spaces and mixing row housing ,courtyard housing and apartment to balance the density and development of basic infrastructure within. The farmer’s market and retail store area was also developed to carry economic activities of inhabitants.

Himalayan General Insurance Project was the competition project carried out in group during the internship under Prajwal Hada N’ Associates. It was designed with the fusion of traditional and modern style mimicking the form of Himalayas prominent in the vicinity incorporating various sustainable features (Green roof, Solar energy, Natural daylight and ventilation, Rain water harvesting etc.).

BINDABASINI ASHRAM

CONCEPT: SACRED ASHRAM: SACRED GEOMETRY: SACRED ARCHITECTURE

The brief was to create an ashram in the plot consisting of Bindabasini temple for guruji and his followers and students.

Ahram is a sacred place of knowledge where guru’s provide knowledge to their shishya’s.

Also, the site consists of Bindabasini temple which represents the presence of three Goddess Maha Lakshmi, Maha Saraswati, Maha kali showing feminine power. Thus, Sri Yantra (a mandala form: Sacred Geometry) was used to perceive the design of this ashram.

SRI- YANTRA

The Sri Yantra also called Sri Chakra is a beautiful and complex sacred geometry used for worship, devotion and meditation.

The middle point of this yantra is called “Bindu” which is believe to be the point which creates a lot of energy and the point where union of all beings takes place. Thus, a significant tree was placed at the middle of the site as a symbol of life radiating positive energy and all other buildings of ashram including existing temple aligns around the middle space with tree.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING

The brief was to design a commercial complex in existing RNAC plot. The concept was to create a unique and modern commercial building guided by design principles. The main factor was to break the monotony of rectangular blocks of existing cityscape thus, the angular forms were designed to create interesting scenario. The forms were developed across the axis towards existing stupa.
