HELLO! My name is Anita Hu and I am a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I see architecture as a vessel for history, a way of storytelling through the people that have experienced and lived it. It is a combination of many lives under one roof. I am a motivated and focused individual through my years of work and volunteer experience. Aside from architecture, I love discovering music, photography, and meeting new people. I hope you enjoy my selection of works!

This library in Toronto aims to inspire the community to interact and seek recognition through its production rooms and theatre for independent films and performances.

The site is easily accessible with the bus stations located next to the building and a pedestrian bridge that leads to a GO station.

The west facade is a curtain wall with rotating louvres acting as a shading device to keep heat out and to protect books from UV rays.

HOLOCENE. BUILDING CONSTRUCTION APRIL 2019.

Supervised by Terri Boake and Cam Parkin.

In collaboration with Madeline Engen.

Located in the gorge of Watkins Glen State Park, New York, the Holocene seeks to emphasize the juxtaposition between the water and the jagged rocks. Through using the space between the fractured land, each level of the pavilion offers a unique experience.

The Holocene serves as a ramp from the top of the fracture, spiralling downwards to showcase the hundreds of layers of sediment formed in the last thousands of years, ending at the rushing water, where the gorge will continue to erode.

APUTTUPIK. ᐃ ᒡ ᓗ ᕕ ᔭ ᖅ ENVIRONMENTAL BUILDING DESIGN APRIL 2019.

Supervised by Terri Boake.

In collaboration with Glenn Lu.

Located in the Quttinirpaaq National Park in Nunavut, this off-grid research station analyzes the effects of climate change. The occupants are a botanist and an environmental researcher.

By better understanding the melting permafrost and its capacity to be utilized as a nutrient filled watering source, occupants are investigating a way to maximize efficiency during the short growing seasons of Nunavut.

In collaboration with Lauren Chalmers, Glenn Lu, Isaac Walsh, Lauren Mok, and Silas Clusiau.

In the near future, external sources of light have been depleted and the human race is in a desperate search for what has been taken from them. Just as resources are dwindling, a soft glow emerges from beyond the ridge of the mountain igniting a sense of hope for those who remain. Curiosity and necessity drive them to follow the light into the mountainside. The light’s grasp becomes stronger the deeper they venture until all knowledge of their past life fades and their only thought is to preserve the Source. With this sole purpose, they pass through the threshold that brings them into their new life.

The city is governed by the source of light called “The Swarm”. Citizens are provided with the bare necessities to live and are expected to spend their days working on expanding The Hive to bring light to the rest of the world. The everpresent glow is a reminder of the worker’s purpose as they can never escape its reach even in their “private” cells. The Swarm, impervious to The Workers, house the elite who prosper in the light.

A small group of The Workers starts to doubt the beliefs forced upon them and seek refuge from the light. The Aware gather in the shadow of The Swarm, unknown to the elite and out of reach of the light. Questioning the beliefs of The Workers, The Aware think that the light should not be used as a source of hierarchy but rather as a resource to be shared by all. They meet under The Swarm to plan their uprising as it is the only place where they can have the freedom to think for themselves.
