| SEMESTER 9

As a student of the built environment, I believe that architecture serves as a tangible index of wider societal phenomena. Through my academic journey, I have come to understand the politics of representation and the many ways in which buildings can contribute to space/identity/dream building.

This portfolio contains a selection of works that show my exploration in design through various scales. It showcases my experience in working on the scale of the human hand to the scale of the city.

I am passionate about the human experience that architecture can provide and I wish to produce work that challenges the status quo.

ARCHITECTURAL PROJECTS

CASAMANCE COMMUNITY SCHOOL, SENEGAL

PROJECT TYPE: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN ATELIER | GROUPWORK

TERM: SEM 6 | 2023

Located in the Casamance region of Senegal, Africa, this project was part of our studio coursework. It was also part of the Kaira Looro International Competition, 2023. The requirements of the space were to accommodate 125 students, serve as a community space and be buildable by the local community using local materials. Further, there was no fixed site for the school hence the design had to be one that could be adapted to any site condition in the Casamance region.

Since this project was based in a context that is far from our ‘normal’, an in-depth research on Senegal’s history/culture/materials was first conducted. We zeroed down on compressed earth blocks (prepared on site) for walls, and local bamboo for the roof structure. Further, retractable rattan screens were incorporated to provide additional flexibility to spaces. We also created a modular system of spaces that could be expanded/contracted to form different spaces and serve different functions

8

MODULE DEVELOPMENT

Since ease of construction was a primary concern, we adopted a modular approach towards space building. By manipulating the configuration of the modules, we were able to achieve unique functionality each time.

Dimensionally, this was achieved by using a square base that could further be built on. This base module would primarily serve as a classroom.

Placing two of these modules sideways would result in a space that could serve as a fully functional lab.

Placing four of the modules in a square arrangement would create a large space that would could accommodate large gatherings. This would primarily serve as the school canteen, however opening it up would allow it to become a pavilion for community gatherings, events etc.

K.N. KATJU MARG RENEWAL, NEW DELHI

PROJECT TYPE: URBAN DESIGN ATELIER | GROUPWORK

TERM: SEM 7 | 2023

K.N. Katju Marg is a sub-arterial road located in Rohini, New Delhi.

As part of an urban design studio, our task was to conduct fieldwork and redesign a 500m section of the road. The first requirement was to understand the existing site conditions and concerns. Post this, we had to propose a design solution that would address the identified concerns along with improve the overall safety for all users.

Considering the scale of the site, extensive photographs, interviews & audits were conducted through weekly site visits over 8 weeks. To come up with the proposal, we closely referred to IRC (Indian Road Congress) guidelines to understand and implement existing standards in the current site conditions. Further, we used several projects from various cities in India/abroad as references to translate their ideas onto our site.

1. DEMARCATING SPACE FOR ALL USERS

Once we identified all users of the road, we inferred that pedestrians/cyclists were the most vulnerable group. Thus, a universally accessible footpath was demarcated to for all pedestrians/ disabled users. A cycle track was added to ensure a safe and smooth passage for cyclists. Finally, the carriageway was divided into three lanes including a designated bus lane to ensure smooth traffic flow.

2. DESIGNATING PARKING SPOTS | 3. INCORPORATING TSR PARKING

To combat haphazard parking on the road, designated parking spots were provided for 4wheelers and 2-wheelers. Further, a TSR (Three-wheeler scooter rickshaw) parking was provided to ensure safe boarding and drop-offs for this heavily used but severely neglected mode of transport.

4. PRIORITISING THE PEDESTRIANS/CYCLISTS | 5. DESIGNATING MULTI-UTILITY ZONES

Lastly, pedestrians and vendors were given priority by providing multi-utility zones which included vendors, seating and green spaces. This would ensure that pedestrians have a pleasurable and safe walking experience throughout the stretch.

CAFE DELHI HEIGHTS, BANGALORE

PROJECT TYPE: INTERNSHIP PROJECT

SUPERVISION: AR.

TERM: WINTER | 2021

Cafe Delhi Heights (CDH) is a restaurant franchise originally based in New Delhi. They set to expand and tap into the lively food culture of Bangalore with a new outlet in 2022.

My task was to design the space for CDH’s new outlet. My scope of work included working on the interior layouts as well as the facade design. Considering this was CDH’s first outlet in Bangalore, the design had to be novel yet evocative of the existing brand.

The structure for the existing site was constructed using only steel which in turn paved the way for an industrial approach to the aesthetic. Using elements such as exposed bricks and steel beams helped build on this and achieve a new visual language. To add a touch of familiarity in this new outlet, pop colours and decorative pipes were borrowed from the interiors of existing CDH outlets’

SCHEMATIC FLOOR PLANS

GROUND FLOOR

The ground floor layout was done in a way that it accommodated 44 covers. A cut-out on the mezzanine floor above enhanced the openness of the ground floor making it feel more inviting.

The terrace was the largest area of the CDH outlet. Therefore, boasting a 15 feet long bar that would cater to the 78 covers such as wood & grass (flooring) and vegetation that serves

22
TERRACE

The mezzanine served as a pit stop to the terrace with a mixture of booth and balcony type seating. Since the mezzanine also serves as the floor with the main kitchen, it would be buzzing with service activity, hence the seating was arranged to accommodate 18 covers only.

TERRACE

Therefore, It was designed to be the hub of the establishment, covers on the terrace. There is abundant usage of natural elements serves as a material and visual relief from the industrial look.

FACADE DEVELOPMENT & VIEWS

The approach to developing the facade and exterior was dictated by the existing structure. Considering that it was steel, it already imbued an industrial style.

This was further developed into a cohesive visual language by incorporating more industrial materials such as glass and exposed brick for the exterior walls.

Certain areas of the facade were exaggerated by creating an external skin using the same Ibeams as the structure. This also helped visually tie the facade to the structure.

The industrial look of the exterior was contrasted with a warmer feel in the interiors. This also translated into the furniture, which was made of softer and more natural materials such as jute and wicker.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROJECTS

THE SANDWICH SANDWICHER

PROJECT TYPE: PRODUCT DESIGN

TERM: SUMMER SCHOOL 2023 | AA, LONDON

The theme of the 2023 Summer School at the Architectural Association, London was ‘London’s Belly’. It aimed to explore the intersection of design and the food of London.

The objective of my unit titled, ‘Unforgettable Noon’ was to design and build a product that enhances the making/eating/packaging of a dish of our choice. I decided to choose the Sandwich for how banal yet versatile it is. The Sandwich Sandwicher is a rebellion to the endless rows of pre-curated supermarket sandwiches so prevalent in London. It aims to bring excitement and the agency of choice (in terms of ingredients) back to its user.

THE LITTLE STINT - GRAPHICS & ILLUSTRATIONS

PROJECT TYPE: EXTERNSHIP PROJECT

SUPERVISION: ANIRBAN GHOSH

TERM: SEM 7 | 2023

The Little Stint is a recurring art & cultural event organised by Delhi-based WIP Labs. In 2023, the Little Stint showcased and promoted female artists from various disciplines. This event was organised in Dhanmill, New Delhi from 4th - 8th October, 2023.

My scope of work for this event was to develop a visual theme using graphics and illustrations that could be used in print and digital media. I set out by researching prominent as well as unrecognised women artists from India, and illustrating icons that represented their works/ideas. I then refined and arranged these icons to form a 4x4 pattern that could serve as a background to flyers, postcards, etc.

The background for this spread is an example of how these illustrations/pattern can be used. The postcards on the right, also designed by me, contain the pattern along with larger individual illustrations. These postcards were printed and distributed during the event.

ART PROJECTS

PROJECT TYPE: PERSONAL PROJECTS

TERM: 2018 - 23

These are selected works from my dabbles in the world of visual arts. This section includes paintings, collages and diagrams made by me through my undergraduate program as well as high school.

The painted canvases explore themes of animals, human figures, and the built environment for which I use varied mediums such as charcoal, acrylic paints and oil paints (displayed on the right & spreads below).

I later studied the Dadaist & Surrealist art movements which challenged my existing notions of art and its aesthetics. Understanding the spirit of Dadaism also drove me to create some of my own Dadaist works such as collages and paintings (diplayed on the right).
