Model #1 The first model created reminds me of a small part of a shanty town. It is compressed and compacted and seems enclosed. There is one main frontage for light to overtake the space, and the remaining three walls seem to protect the exposed side. Even looking from the front view, the view is restricted by a piece of card, alluding to the point of secrets within the structure. As it is represented as a shack of a shanty town, this could be interpreted as a way of privacy for people living inside. The roof is stacked with ‘pieces’ that in reality would be a very basic material that provides shelter.

Model #2 My second model focused on the effects of shadows. I wanted to show how building structures can shadow the ground and cover certain surface areas. Taking inspiration from a Jewish museum in Berlin (next page), I wanted to portray a jagged effect of lines ‘out of control.’ As all the lines are straight, this gives off a sharp and intimidating look, almost dangerous. Along with the shadows, this model could potentially work on a set in a horror movie. I further explored the cardboard by etching a pattern into the vertical surface. This is like an instilled art within the structure of the model. For the photographs, I experimented with using flash and without it, to see what the effect would be; just like the grey museum changes to a darker saturation when you walk closer.

Model #3 This model is more abstract and random. I found creativity in sticking pieces of cardboard in random orders to create different elements within one model. The fun in creating alternating layers was then the solution to find equilibrium. Balancing the model brought more opportunities to change its’ face upright or with all its weight on one piece of card. Although, realistically, this would be difficult to do, this model was to push the boundaries, and taking away the complexities of gravity in the real world.

Model #4 The fourth model was my favourite due to the three curved pieces that step below each other. I imagined this would be glass curves for a building, where the highest level is a restaurant. The likeable feature is the different angles that are formed. This would be important for sustainability to use the sun as a source of natural light entering the building at specifically positioned angles.

The front view is the most aesthetic in comparison to the other views due to the curves formed.

Model #5 This is the model I have chosen to further explore as I love the open space, I have created all throughout the model. It makes a connection with the entrance and exit allowing you to circulate around. The model also looks like it could be converted into a roof top garden. If I was to decorate it, I would hang a string of lights all around the inside edges. Also I would add furniture such as garden chairs and a firepit. I also made a small statue with remaining pieces of card. This resembles a waterfall that would be in place to accessorize the garden. This space would also act as a reflection area for workers/colleagues to go and take their break.

My first time using Fusion 360, I wanted to challenge myself so went about constructing the most abstract model.

I really enjoyed using the software to recreate my model.

Using the default material, I really began to see my model come to life. Adding depth and shadow further made the model bring out its’ flaws. As I explained with model 3, this was more of a fun experiment. When putting it into a realistic context, the balance of the model is not stable to become a building.

I really could visualize this using the 360 degrees cube that software has. With that, I could see the horizon line along the plane, which allowed me to see layers which fall underground.

Rendering

Exploring different options, I played around with the idea of a mirror image below, which caused a reflection. Along with this, I stretched the shadow to see what the outcome would produce.

Then I began to experiment with backgrounds.

Rendering with materials

When adding materials, it gives a level of excitement as there is a large option. Fusion allowed me to see what contrasts as well as what does not work well together. In the end I stuck with three materials: wood, glass and stone. Combining such important materials meant also to have the correct colours to satisfy the look. I stuck with four: marble white, blue-tinted glass, mahogany, and the default wood from previously.

This gives the model a sense of colour and belonging to the environment it would be surrounded in.

Micro Studio

DigiMap (Site Plan) My idea of a micro studio was to create a personalized space for myself to escape from ‘reality.’ I wanted topick a location that has an amazing view and was close to water.This is because i enjoy the attributes this brings, such as calmness. The location in this instance,is more important that the build, as i have chosen a quiet space that seems hidden from the busy city.

My location is in Manchester, Deansgate, Castlefield. I have shown this clearly (bottom right) in red, by learning on Photoshop.

User Requirements: For myself, I need to insert a large desk where everything is accessable from. This desk should have a window in front so it can also be a place to think and reflect. The desk would fold in so i can get closer to the window, and feel as though I am closer to the outside environment as much as possible.

A cover roof where I can see visually outside, however, people cannot see inside my microstudio.

Precedent 1 Project Name: Microsoft Envisioning Center Location: Office Interiors, Redmond, USA Architect: Olson Kundig Date: 2016

This project shows a space that has been manipitulated into a creative form for small groups of people. It connects with the rest of the room, yet still has a breakage and exists perfectly on its’ own.

I really love the use of geometry being used here. Isoceles triangles have been used to construct a hexagonal area, where employees can discuss hve meetings.

“Designed for advanced video conferencing, it allows multi-dimensional interaction between in-person participants, off-site participants and live tech info walls. Colored light cues indicate the status of the space—green for available, red for in use, blue for open and on display.” (Castro, F 2016) The geometrical aspect has inspired me as it reminds me of origami. The structure seems very light and almost like paper, which further resembles origami models. I like how the materials are very simplistic and do not over-power the nature of the space.

Furthermore, the use of intelligent programming, allows the space to change colour in correspondence to its’ occupation. Perfect for offices and firms!

Precedent 2 Project Name: Owl Creek House / Skylab Location: Snowmass, USA Architect: Jeff Kovel, Nathan Cox Date: 2015

This project is one which fascinated me when I saw the materials used in order for the appearance. The slender slabs that run across the body of the building is what makes this building particularly interesting.

The contrast between the sharp edges and warm tones contradict the building, adding mystery and wonder. As quoted it “was built on the idea that a physical place can deepen the connections between friends, families and the natural world.” (Castro, F 2018).

The crispness and end product of the building also fit in the context of the environment it is built. It is a building that can hibernate within its’ environment as it gladly mirrors the nature of the edgy ground it sits on.

The decking adds a homely vibe to the building and alost invites you in from the cold.

The inspiration I have taken is the use of black, sleak planks that are propped up against an earthy tone. I would want to also add this element to my microstudio in terms of exterior.

Precedent 3 Project Name: Look! Look! Look!

Location: Herefordshire, United Kingdom Architect: Ivan Morison Date: 2017

Particularly, what striked an inspiration from this structure, was the level of intricacy in all the joints of the structure. The edges and inverted sides really show a complex side of the design, yet also allow you to appreciate the symmetry of the ‘folds,’ The artists first designed the structure in paper using origami, then worked with structural engineers, Artura, to bring the designs to life. The pavilion is built using a sunked metal foundation frame, held with screw anchors, with a timber structure over-laid with a special woven fabric which can withstand all weathers – in a pink colour chosen from a traditionally Georgian palette.(Morison, i 2017) From this design, i would take the geometrical aspects and embedd them within my own design. I would like to simply stick to lines and straight edges to see wat i can achieve.

Itrative Sketch Process

Model 1 Iteration

Taking inspiration from my precedent studies, I created a model that heavily resembles origami. This was my intended purpose as I wanted the focus to be on the lines and geometry that is created.

Further Exploration Taking this model further, I exploited every side of the shape and came up with a concept for a microspace. I have drawn out the shape and shown how I would transform it within the context.

Model 2 Iteration My second model is a replica of my precedent.

Though this is a shape of a pineapple, I have tried to create a pumpkin shape.. Again, i have stuck with the geometrical theme of straight lines.

Model 3 Iteration

From my first precedent study, I was inspired by the hexagonal shape that is formed by triangles. I wanted to reverse this process by strarting with a hexagon, and creating triangles from it.

Early Sketches

For my microstudio, I decided to look back at my sketches and take an idea from there. I have taken certain aspects from all my precedents. From precedent 1, i really wanted to involve a hexagon shape. From my second precedent, I have included the sleek geometrical lines that really stood out for me. My main focus is on geometry as i love the sharpness it brings.

Bringing in Context I have drawn out a part of the site and also where i would like my microstudio. I have split it into two levels. This is for personal reasons - when I would be in the studio, I would most likely tend to overwork and not know when to stop. With the difference in layers, I can subconciously section my space into zones. For example, the bottom level is for studying and the above layer is a relaxation zone.

Axonometric Drawing

Connection between levels Adding stairs was the biggest challenge I faced. I did not want them to take up too much space, therefore I made the decision, that I would dig up part of the ground curb. This would result in the stairs fitting neatly within the stone, and wont take up space in the studio.

Also, as I made the decision to have the lower level to lift up, I needed to take into consideration any friction caused.

Desk The desk is the most fundamental part of my microstudio. It is a place for me to draw, reflect, watch, or sit. I have made the desk interactive as the middle part can split. This is so I can ‘fold’ the desk when i just want to lookk outside and think.

The space is big enough for me to stand in or even put my chair in for a moment swith nature.

Washroom Area As this is a bathroom area, I needed to ensure privacy. The way I have portrayed this on my model, is by using tissue paper on the windows, so you cannot clearly see inside. i have further experimented with light to see how tranparent thr ‘windows’ would look, Imside, I have added a divider door that folds when you need more space. This can be drawn when needed and can then be put away to allow more light to flood through the area.

For Cine Space, I chose to expore a scene within one of my favourite TV shows. I really enjoyed Season 1, and knew I was to chose a scene from there. Watching it back, I picked out a 6-minute scene from Episode 2. In the scene, the main character (Tommy) has agitatedly returned from a traumatic experience in the scene before and comes to the pub for a drink. The barmaid (Grace) is inside smoking and hears a knock at the door. She moves to check who it is, when the Tommy invites himself in - as it is his own pub. He takes his hat off as he has just been soaked in the rain and helps himself to a bottle of whiskey and a glass at the bar. Grace attends back ti the bar, when Tommy tells her that he came for company and she should join him.

Tommy pulls up a chair at the middle circle table and Grace soon joins. The pair as seen to face each other and talk about the event that previously occured. Tommy moves his upper body forward, to offer Grace a cigerette. She politely refuses and they continue talking. They began discussing whether singing should be allowed in the pub so Tommy asks Grace rto sing for him. She gets off her chair and walks towards the back of the pub. She pulls a chair from the middle hub and stands on top of it, in the centre. Now, the film scenes show us the difference in level bwtween the two charaters, whilst Grace is ready to sing. She asks Tommy “Happy or Sad?” to which there is a close up on his face whilst he croakly replies with “Sad.”.

Grace then replies with “Okay, but ill warn you, it’ll break your heart..”We see a quick change to Tommy who is shaking is head and replies with “already broken”. This is the que for Grace to begin singing which she does. The clips alternate between the expressions of the two characters. Coming to the end of the song, the scene ends with a slow motion of the two characters from the left of the pub, slowly making them distant and silent.
